Genetic Ascension

Chapter 1665 Void

There were too many things Sylas didnʼt recognize. He could see Time, he could see Space, but what were the other colors? What of the things he couldnʼt fathom at all?

That was what was really ripping him apart.

The colors he could see werenʼt the problem. It was the ones that werenʼt there, the ones that were present and yet not observable, that were shredding his Will apart.

As though infuriated that an ant like him was even trying to see through them, they pressured his Will and pulled on it harder, and harder, and harder than even that.

It was like an endless, unfathomable abyss, one so deep he couldnʼt see to the end of it.

But Sylas could faintly tell that unless he could grasp these things, maybe he would never truly perfect Archon Casting.

This was the first time he realized that Time and Space alone wouldnʼt be enough to grasp the secrets of the universe he was after. He had considered this to be a possibility in the past, but what he hadnʼt considered was the chance that he could have them right in front of him and yet be entirely unable to grasp them.

This wasnʼt a feeling that he was used to.

It wasnʼt as though he had no connection with these things at all. He still had Spacetime on his side. Others didnʼt even have this. How unfathomable could the other things possibly be to hide from him so perfectly?

Every time he tried to grasp them, they slipped away, almost like they didnʼt exist at all, like they were intangible, like they were- ʼVoid.ʼ

BOOM.

A splitting ax descended onto Sylasʼ skull and he coughed up a mouthful of blood.

He was suddenly thrust out and onto a teleportation platform, his eyes bloodshot.

Just as he was about to collapse to the ground, he stomped a foot-hard and violent.

If he were back in his Milky Way Horizon, this one action alone would have caused the entire platform to quake, the surrounding town shuddering on impact.

But this time, it felt like he was a child stomping a foot onto solid granite.

Even so, the sound itself was another matter.

It clapped like thunder, and he forcefully stabilized himself, his Will snapping back together in a surging torrent.

A small pulse of Will surged into the surroundings as Sylasʼ vision finally cleared.

He looked around to find an old man standing at the base of the vast teleportation platform. He was staring at Sylas curiously, his ears strong and pointed like a certain other member of the Jade Race Sylas had met in the past.

He didnʼt expect to see the Jade Race here, but they were probably the one Race you shouldnʼt be surprised to find anywhere.

Even in his old age, the old man had handsome and delicate features. He was a bit short, but it didnʼt seem to dim his confidence. If he wore a smile instead of that hard look, he might have even looked like someone Sylas would find amiable.

Sylas looked up to find a high ceiling above him. There was a dome of glass, but it was so far up that by the time the light distorted to him, even the skies werenʼt all that clear.

It seemed that the glass was curved and was concentrating light in a way that distorted the image beyond as well.

ʼItʼs not for light. Itʼs to center the teleportation.ʼ

Sylas realized the crux of the matter quite quickly. This place was underground and highly regulated and controlled. Despite the skylight, it was quite dark and almost dreary.

It felt more like the place you would teleport criminals into, but this was probably the only place the old woman could send him through for such a long-distance teleportation.

However, this old man didnʼt seem aware that this was going to be happening.

Before he could say anything, though, he froze. His gaze flickered, and then he looked at Sylas again. Then his expression became weird.

It wouldnʼt be until tomorrow that Sylas understood why that gaze was like that.

”Here.” The old man flicked a finger forward, and Sylas caught a badge. ”This will be your citizenʼs token for the time being. The competition you would like to join will be held tomorrow and take place at the tallest building in the city. Good luck.”

Sylasʼ eyes seemed to still be a bit glazed over at this moment, but he still nodded and then slowly stepped forward.

However, as he left the region, the back of the old man becoming distant, he realized that he had faced another problem.

He was extremely deep underground. The height of that skylight had been at least a few dozen kilometers above his head.

Yet, there didnʼt seem to be an obvious exit; there were just endless pillars holding these tall ceilings up. And the further he got from the skylight, the dimmer and darker everything became.

From a bit dark and dreary, it was slowly getting to the point Sylas couldnʼt even see his own hand in front of his face anymore. And without his Runeweaver Eyes, his vision was no longer nearly as sharp as it had once been.

Sylas had no choice but to rely on his Visualization, but the moment he tried, he realized something else...

His Visualization range was only six inches in this place.

A familiar old woman stood to her feet, her eyes glowing with a peculiar light.

”He actually survived. Odd, though... I sense something peculiar...”

Part of her wanted to sweep forward to understand it more thoroughly, but she decided to restrain herself.

A brat like this one was too unruly. She had quite a bit of experience and had met people of all sorts. Although she had never met someone exactly like Sylas, that experience still allowed her a deeper understanding of him than most would have upon first meeting.

Because of that, she knew that she didnʼt actually want to have too many ties to Sylas until she understood him better. And for that purpose... It seemed she was going to have to contact her granddaughter.
