Genetic Ascension

Chapter 1191: ’Ol Pal [Bonus]

[Thanks chrono, may all coffee table corners find your little toes]

Sylas’ eyes shot open. But the first thing he saw wasn’t the sky, or the moon, nor was it even the ground — it was a pair of blue eyes that might as well have shone as bright as any one of them. And then his eyes swung down, a curious verb considering the breasts swaying in front of them.

Cassarae seemed to have woken up. Yet, instead of clothing herself, she was kneeling on top of him, staring down as though she was waiting for him to wake up to this specific moment.

She had to have been there for a while, just staring at him for who knew how long.

”Is this a new fetish of yours or something?” Sylas asked.

Cassarae blinked. ”...Don’t you know how to speak in anything other than annoying?”

”You? Policing the way someone speaks?”

Cassarae reached a hand up and forced Sylas’ eyelids closed.

”You were better when you were asleep and not talking to my tits like they have my mouth on them.”

”It wasn’t my choice to leave them hanging out like that.”

Cassarae snorted, keeping Sylas’ eyes closed with one palm as she awkwardly put clothes on.

”Well now you don’t get to see anything at all, asshole.”

...

In the far-off distance, Olivia and Nyssa sat with their legs dangling off the side of a building. They weren’t on the roof, but instead on a middle floor. It was just that the previous battle had cut it in half, likely due to one of Cassarae’s wild swings, so they were half on the verge of falling with the rest of the building, and half able to use the floor as a table for what little food they had managed to scrounge up.

Olivia reached over and patted Nyssa’s shoulder.

”It’s hard to make up a gap between you and a childhood friend. I’d advise you give up.”

Nyssa frowned and shrugged her shoulder.

Olivia put her hands up in mock surrender before taking a bite out of the leg of beast meat she had.

Though she didn’t say anything, Nyssa wasn’t very happy either. She had never seen Sylas in any mode but serious. Although his face still looked almost entirely indifferent, there was still just the slightest curl of his lip and a hint of... sarcasm in his tone?

”Well, I guess there’s a chance. Who knows. I heard that people in this world live for hundreds of years sometimes. More than that? That’s kind of cool. In our world, living to 70 was already a good life.”

Nyssa’s frown deepened and she looked toward Olivia. This was maybe one of the oddest things she had ever heard, but then she recalled that they were from a Summoned World.

”Their relationship is a very weird one, though. Can you believe that before a year ago, they hadn’t seen each other for like ten years? Well, maybe not seen, but they literally didn’t speak. Then the moment they started talking again, it was like they picked right up where they left off.

”Ten years to you might be a blink. Well, I don’t really know how old you are, so maybe not. But to us, ten years is like 15% of our life. They make no sense to me at all.

”They’re obsessed with each other in a way that’s probably a little bit unhealthy, and yet oddly healthy in their own unique way. I guess if you spend ten years and can’t find someone else that meets your fancy the same way, you have the right to be a little obsessed with each other.”

”Can you stop talking now?”

”No.” Olivia pouted. ”I’ve been the third wheel for too long. I need a fourth wheel around here so that I can actually have some fun. I can only make so many jokes about being dicknotized, you know? A girl needs something more in her life! It’s not as though Sylas is ever going to get any friends that I can hook up with—”

BOOM!

Olivia had only just said the words when their building was suddenly rocked.

”Shit.”

They both jumped at the same time.

In the distance, Sylas pulled Cassarae’s palm from his face. He only had half a beat to be disappointed that she was dressed now before he paid attention to the distance, frowning.

He stood to his feet, noticing the Scorned Wraps were back in place. It seemed that if he wasn’t actively keeping them gone, they’d reappear. Or maybe he could train that.

There wasn’t much time to think about it because two figures came out in steaming piles of what looked like coal and black soot. They coughed, staggering out of the debris.

When Sylas saw who they were, he couldn’t help but frown. Although their faces were obscured, his Will was too powerful now, and his Milky Way Progeny Title was far too strong as well.

At least in the bounds of this galaxy, not only was his Luck off the charts, but his perception... well, it too was on another level.

That was why when they appeared, he knew instantly that these two were Jala and Alex.

Alex coughed and looked up. First he noticed Olivia, and his expression became weird. Well, his eyes became weird, hidden behind a mask of foggy black.

But then he looked into the distance and saw the carnage, then Cassarae and Sylas.

”...Son of a bitch... you’ve got to be...”

Alex coughed again, masking his voice.

”Listen, J... we’re going to back away slowly... very slowly... they say that predators aren’t very good at picking up targets that are hardly moving... when we’re far enough away... we run for our lives. Got it? Got it...”

Alex’s hushed whisper really was meant to only be heard by Jala, but to Sylas’ ears, it might as well have been right next to him.

Jala nodded a bit stiffly, happy Alex had made him wear a mask.

Slowly, they both took a single step back until suddenly Alex became a blur of black, hightailing it out of there.

Jala’s eyes widened, but when he looked toward Sylas, he was already gone.

BANG!

Alex slammed into Sylas.

”Um, pal, buddy ol’ chad, how’ve you been? Still as handsome as I remember...”
