Chapter 1983: Meeting with the President

One of the first people Ning went to see early the next morning was President Helen Morstell.

He arrived in the capital city early enough and asked for an appointment with the president. Even if her calendar was full, given who had asked to meet her, there was no doubt that the president would clear her schedule to meet him.

He walked into her office and found it empty of everyone but her.

It had been a while since they had spoken privately, and judging by the amount of paperwork spread across her office, the aftermath of the summit had created far more political work than Ning had imagined. Morstell looked tired when he arrived, though she immediately put aside the document in her hand once she saw him.

”You finally decided to show up,” she said, leaning back in her chair. ”Do you have any idea how many reports I’ve received about things you were apparently involved in without anyone being able to tell me what actually happened?”

Ning pulled out a chair and sat across from her. ”Probably a lot, I imagine. I’ve been busy.”

”No shit!” the president said.

Ning raised an eyebrow and chuckled slightly at her cursing. ”I knew you were confused about a lot of different things. So, I came to explain. If you are free, I can start.”

Morstell gave him a tired look before sighing. ”Fine. Start from the beginning, and this time I want all the details. You told me Tritus was dead, disappeared again, and left half the people at that summit wondering whether another attack was coming.”

Ning nodded and began explaining.

He told her what Tritus truly was, at least enough for her to understand that he had never been an ordinary awakened person. He explained that Tritus had been manipulating the Numbers from behind the scenes, that the so-called promised day had involved Jun’Tal in Bronveria, and that the boy’s ability had been used to create enough energy to sustain something much worse than another attack on the summit.

Morstell’s expression became increasingly serious.

Then Ning told her about the portal.

”A portal to another world?” she asked, her voice dropping.

”Yes,” Ning answered.

”Like an actual portal? One you can go through and arrive at a different place?” she asked for confirmation.

Ning chuckled. ”That is how it would lead to another world. That is how they were going to come over.”

”They?” Morstell asked. ”There were other people who were going to come through there? Did we avoid a war?”

”War would’ve been the last of your worries at that point,” Ning explained. ”What was coming through were demons. Imagine Infernals and the like, but all hellbent on destroying everything. Each one with different, unique powers that you could not suppress. War? No. It would’ve been an apocalypse.”

Morstell stared at him in awe.

Ning continued as calmly as before. ”They had already started crossing over by the time I arrived. Their leader came through as well, but I sent him back and closed the portal before it became a larger problem.”

For several seconds, Morstell said nothing.

Then she leaned back and slowly rubbed her temples.

”You are telling me that while we were trying to keep the summit from collapsing completely, a portal to a demonic world was being opened in Bronveria by Tritus.”

Ning nodded.

”And you dealt with it completely on your own, without telling anyone else?” she asked.

”I have told a few other people by now, but no more than 5,” Ning said.

Morstell let out a long breath.

”Yes. We can’t tell anyone this. This information should never find its way to the common people.”

Ning agreed.

”What exactly am I even supposed to say?” she asked. ”That there are other worlds? That demons nearly invaded one of our neighboring countries? And that the only reason any of us are still sitting here comfortably is because Blackfang happened to arrive in time and killed the biggest known criminal out there? Who, mind you, was also an alien or something. God, it’s annoying to even think about.”

She gestured toward the documents covering her desk.

”The summit already caused enough panic. My approval ratings are down, several opposition groups are blaming my administration for failing to keep Conjora’s delegation out of danger, and now you bring me this news on top of all of it. How am I supposed to handle it? Do I tell the masses the truth, or do I hide it?”

Ning thought about that.

”Just don’t tell them anything.”

Morstell stared at him for a second. ”Thank you for the brilliant political advice.”

”You’re welcome.”

She ignored that.

Ning glanced toward the papers on her desk before remembering something else. ”What happened with the awakening serum? We were interrupted just then, weren’t we?”

Morstell’s expression shifted, but not for the better.

”It still hasn’t been revealed. That’s another issue I have to deal with right now.”

Ning frowned slightly. ”Why?”

”We missed the opportunity at the summit,” she explained. ”The entire presentation collapsed before we could properly reach that part, and something as significant as an awakening serum cannot simply be announced through a press release the next morning.”

She picked up one of the folders beside her.

”We need preparation, demonstrations, security, scientific representatives, legal review, and enough political coordination that people don’t immediately assume Conjora is trying to monopolize awakened powers.”

Ning nodded. He supposed a president had to think a lot about everything. Compared to him, who could do whatever he wanted, it was a lot.

Ning could certainly help them deal with this, but in a few years, he would leave this world, and it would be the people who stayed behind who would have to deal with the aftermath. As such, he wanted to pull himself away from as many major decisions as possible.

There were only two that he was going to involve himself in now.

The first was the creation of the Academy for newly awakened individuals with dangerous powers.

And the second was Minhya’s ascension to the throne of Faedria.

Besides that, he truly didn’t want to involve himself in anything major.
