I AM A MAGE BUT WITH MILF SYSTEM

Chapter 866: Not a escape, but rather an acknowledgement

“Remember this, Vanessa. Everyone suffers. But not everyone is blessed in the same way, and even among those who suffer, weight of those suffering is never identical.”

He rested his hands lightly on the stone railing.

“You are the daughter of a noble house. You live a life that is already countless times easier than what most people will ever know. Can you or I ever truly imagine working from sunrise to nightfall in the fields just to earn a few silver coins?”

…

“No. We cannot. Nor can people like us, raised among luxury and protection, understand what it means to carry those same hard earned coins to a weathered house and still wonder whether they will be enough to keep a family alive.”

Vanessa remained silent beside him.

“There are people in this kingdom who have lost someone they loved simply cause they could not afford a healing mage. There are people who cannot afford proper food. People who cannot afford rest. People for whom tomorrow is not just politics, but a question of survival. Compared to that, the burdens we carry can look almost comical. And yet that does not mean our burdens are not real.”

He glanced at her again.

“Everyone is suffering in some form. Yours is not identical to theirs, but it is still real. Duty presses on you. Expectation presses on you. The future that has already been arranged for you presses on you. None of that becomes lighter simply because someone else is starving in a village you will never visit.”

“There is only one thing that we can do,” Julian said.

“We move forward. We have responsibilities, whether we chose all of them or not, and we fulfill them as best we can. That is the price of the position we were born into. But if the weight ever becomes too much, then come find me. Share those burdens with me. Even if it is only for a moment, it will lessen its hold on you.”

He looked at her fully then.

“You do not have to carry every expectation alone. Not when I am here.”

**

The words settled over Vanessa more heavily than she expected.

For a moment she could only stare at him. The sudden change in his tone left her more surprised than the kiss had.

One instant he was close enough to steal the breath from her lips, and the next he was speaking with such wisdom that she was confused who he really was.

But, most importantly, she felt taken aback by how much those words mattered.

Over the past few days, everything had begun to feel tighter around her.

On one hand, she was glad for her family. The alliance with the Crown Prince was no small achievement.

If they succeeded, it could secure the Astran bloodline for generations and lift the duchy into a position that only a few houses would dare challenge.

That knowledge brought pride with it, and a sense of duty.

She was raised for this kind of future.

In many ways, she had already accepted it.

But acceptance never fully silenced the other voice inside her.

Late at night, that voice would ask what her own life would look like, when all of this was over.

Not the duchy’s future and certainly not the family’s standing.

But hers.

The question never meant harm or rebellion. She did not dream of running away from responsibility or tearing apart the path laid out before her.

She never truly wanted to escape.

What she had wanted, more than freedom, was simpler and harder to admit.

She wanted acknowledgment.

She wanted someone to look at her and see not only the daughter who would bind houses together, but a person she was beneath all that.

Someone who might one day say that she did not have to hold every burden alone.

And now Kraven had said it.

And he did not sugarcoat anything. He said it plainly, as if it were obvious. As if her struggle were allowed to exist. And just like she had done the day before, she would move onto the next day.

Vanessa’s throat tightened.

She turned her eyes toward the darkened courtyard so that he would not see whatever expression was trying to form there.

..

…

…..

Seconds passed and finally –

Vanessa drew a slow breath and let it out through her nose.

“…You make it sound simple.”

She did not look at him right away.

“I never thought I could run from any of this,” she continued. “I know what this alliance means for the family. I know what is expected of me. I even know that, in many ways, I am fortunate. But knowing all of that never stopped the days from feeling heavy. What I wanted was never an escape. I only wanted to believe that if the weight became too much, there would still be somewhere I could turn without being told to endure it more gracefully.”

At last she glanced back at him. The blush had not fully left her face, but joined with it was something softer and calmer.

“So when you say that,” she whispered, “it means more than you probably intended.”

Julian smiled at her.

Even under the faint light of the balcony lamps, he could see the changes in her. Her tense shoulder had eased by a lot and the weight that clung to her posture seemed to have lessen its hold, even if it was by a little.

Vanessa held his gaze for a moment longer. Then, as if gathering her courage, she spoke again.

“And I am glad,” she said, “that you have such feelings for me.”

She paused, choosing the next word carefully.

“Otherwise… I would never dare to do something like this.”

Before Julian could answer, she closed the distance herself, tipped her chin upward, and rose onto her toes.

For a brief second she seemed to doubt whether she should go through with it or not.

…

Then she leaned forward and pressed her lips to his.
