Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 745: First Objective (2/2)

The island, it turned out, had been holding things back.

Lily found the first of the hidden stores in the fourth hour, and she found it because of a sound that was not there. The Unheard Absolute let her hear the note at the core of everything now, the low quiet hum that all existing things carried, and as she moved through the island’s high caves she caught a patch of ground where the hum simply stopped.

”Nothing is silent,” she said to the empty cave, crouching over the dead patch. ”Not naturally. Silence this clean is a lid.”

Under the lid, once she peeled the concealment working apart, was a cache. Sealed clay vessels of golden sap, stacked in the dark by hands long gone, and when she brought a sample down to Almond, his eyes went sharp the moment he read it.

”Stonewax,” he said. ”Or close enough. It’s a sealant. It carries the ocean’s signature stronger than anything we’ve pulled yet, and it sets hard as rock. This is what you caulk a hull with if you want the water to treat the whole ship as one native thing instead of a thousand seams to pry at.”

”There’s more,” Lily said. ”The cache wasn’t natural, and it wasn’t the only quiet spot on this island. I count at least four more lids. Someone stocked this place for exactly the situation we’re standing in.”

”Previous participants?” Marcus asked.

”Or the event itself, rewarding anyone thorough enough to look.” Lily’s expression did not change, but her voice cooled a shade. ”The third quiet spot is the one you’ll want to hear about. It’s not a cache. It’s a wreck.”

The wreck lay in a drowned cove on the island’s west side, and it was the most valuable and most sobering thing the island had. A ship, or two thirds of one, native-built and old, driven up into the rocks and hidden under the same silence-lid as the caches. Its hull planks were a dense red timber none of the island’s living trees matched, and its keel was a single beam of something dark that Almond read and then read again.

”This wood is ocean-proven,” he said quietly. ”Decades of it. The signature has soaked all the way through. Whoever built this knew this water better than we’ve had time to.” He rested a hand on the broken keel, and the whole salvage team felt the weight of the obvious question.

Silvester asked it anyway. ”So where are they?”

Nobody answered, because the cove answered for them. High on the wreck’s surviving stern, half worn away, someone had carved a line of characters, and the Hub’s translation drifted faint over the old wood.

*The ocean keeps what it catches. Do not be caught. Twenty-two of us. Remember.*

The salvage team stood in silence for a moment. Then Rudra, who had put more sailors in the ground than anyone alive on that beach, gave the wreck a single slow nod, the nod one crew gives another across any distance.

”We remember,” he said. ”Strip her respectfully. Everything she has, she gives to a ship that makes it.”

---

By the fourteenth hour, the water had eaten the entire beach where they had first landed, and the build had moved uphill twice.

The ship coming together on the high ground was unlike anything the family had ever made, because it was everything the island had, all at once. Ocean-proven red timber from the wreck for the keel and the lowest strakes. Glassy blue crabshell plate armoring the hull below the waterline. Palewood above, light and high, deck over deck of it, enough to carry four hundred people and everything a kingdom refuses to leave behind.

And through every seam of it, golden stonewax, laid in by hands and by Ashkryon, who Almond had summoned into the build in the ninth hour and who had turned out to be the finest caulking instrument in existence, its molten lattice warming the sap to a perfect working temper and pressing it into joints no human tool could reach.

Saffa froze braces where Gopu needed structures held. Clovelle folded space around the largest beams so that six of them could be moved by two people. Fraisea stood at the new waterline hour after hour, reading the rising ocean, calling its rate up the slope so the whole site always knew exactly how much island was left.

There was not much left. That was the truth nobody was saying out loud by the eighteenth hour. The island had gone from six miles across to four, and the curve Fraisea had predicted was arriving, the sinking picking up speed as the water found less and less land to swallow.

”Mast problem,” Gopu reported at the nineteenth hour, wings tucked, snout streaked with sap and soot. ”Palewood is too soft to take a full sail’s pull, and we burned the wreck’s spare spars into the hull frame. I need one tall tree with real strength in it, and this forest doesn’t grow one.”

”Yes it does,” Lily said.

She had spent her spare hours on the island’s peak, following the last and largest of the silent lids, and what lay under that one was not a cache and not a wreck. It was a tree, a single tree growing in a hidden fold of the summit crater, black-barked and dead straight and eighty feet tall, humming under its silence with the strongest signature Almond had read on the entire island.

”It was hidden deliberately,” Lily said, as the mast team climbed. ”Better than everything else was hidden. Whoever stocked this island saved the best of it for whoever searched hardest.”

Almond read the black tree from root to crown, and for a moment he simply stood there with his hand on the bark, and the craftsman in him and the ocean’s mark in the wood held a brief, wordless conversation.

”It wants to be a mast,” he said finally. ”I mean that exactly. Somewhere at its core, that is what this tree is for. Cut it clean, Gopu. It’s been waiting.”

Gopu cut it clean, and carried it down the mountain whole, flying low and slow through the failing light with an eighty-foot mast in his claws, and four hundred people on the shrinking high ground stopped work for one full minute to watch their dragon bring the last piece home.

---

The final hours were the worst, because the ocean stopped being patient.

The water came up the slopes in surges now, and the island groaned under the family’s feet as drowned rock shifted somewhere far below. The build site had become the launch site, the great hull standing chocked and ready on rollers of palewood at the edge of a sea that rose to meet it a little faster every time Fraisea called the rate.

They loaded through the twenty-second hour in a hard, quiet rhythm, stores and people and everything Ainen’s fires and Lily’s caches had produced, and Marcus walked the manifest twice, because a kingdom does not leave pieces of itself on a dying island.

At the twenty-third hour, the water took the forest where the palewood had grown, and the island that had been six miles across at their arrival was a bare dark hill barely a thousand paces wide.

”Everyone aboard,” Rudra said, and it was not loud, and every soul on that hill heard it.

Big D was the last one up the boarding ramp, because of course he was. He stopped at the top of it and turned, and looked back down at the drowning hill, at the launch rollers, at the cove somewhere under the water where twenty-two strangers’ ship was keeping its long watch, and his cracked old voice carried in the dark.

”She needs a name before she touches that water,” he said. ”A ship without a name is just wood.”

For a moment there was quiet on the crowded deck. Then Almond, standing at the rail with the counter falling past thirty minutes in the corner of every eye, said the only name the ship had ever really had.

”Chainbreaker.”

Nobody voted, because nobody needed to. Four hundred people who had climbed out of slavery together looked at the great hull under their feet, built in a single day out of a dying island’s every gift, and the name settled over the ship the way the ocean’s mark had settled into her every joint and seam.

”Chainbreaker,” Big D agreed, and thumped the rail once with his old fist, and that was her christening.

The water reached the rollers at twenty-three hours and forty-one minutes. The family did not wait for it to finish the job. Gopu and Ashkryon put their strength against the stern together, Clovelle folded the last stretch of slope a little shorter than it had any right to be, and the Chainbreaker slid down her dying island into the violet sea.

Every person aboard held their breath as the hull touched the water that had swallowed everything else all day.

The ocean took her weight, and held it.

She settled deep and true, crabshell armor gleaming under the waterline, black mast standing against the steel sky, and the violet water that killed everything foreign moved along her flanks with something that was almost acceptance, reading the island’s signature soaked through every plank and finding her native.

Behind them, with a long, low sound like a held breath finally let go, the last thousand paces of the island went under. The hill, the launch site, the silent cove, all of it slid beneath the surface, and the water closed over the place without a ripple, and where a kingdom had landed twenty-four hours ago there was only open ocean from horizon to horizon.

The Hub wrote its verdict across the dark.

[First Objective Complete: Vessel achieved. Island submersion survived.]

[Casualties: 0]

[Kingdoms remaining in event: 294 of 312]

The deck of the Chainbreaker went very quiet as four hundred people read the last line and did the arithmetic no one wanted to do out loud. More than twelve hundred kingdoms had failed the first objective. The event was one day old.

”One day,” Marcus said softly, ”and it’s already buried over a thousand flags.”

”Then we know what kind of war this is,” Rudra said. He stood at the helm of the first ship the kingdom had ever built, his hands settling onto the wheel like they had been waiting years for it, and looked out at the endless violet dark ahead. ”Sound off the watches. Lights low. We learn this ocean before it learns us.”

The Chainbreaker came around slowly under her new mast, four hundred souls and every hope the family had carried up from the bottom of the world, and sailed out alone onto the Thurmugin Ocean.
