Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 743: [Event: Conquest of Thurmugin Ocean]

The days that followed had no single dramatic shape to them, which was its own kind of relief. Twenty days passed in the pocket world, and the shape of them was work, steady and unglamorous and exactly what the kingdom needed.

Almond spent the first three days doing almost nothing but sitting in the Spiritual Weaving Room with the Essence of All Things settled into him, relearning his own arsenal from the ground up. Every Grimblade he had ever forged came apart and went back together sharper, and Ashkryon’s molten lattice grew three new channels once its maker understood essence the way a native speaker understands a language instead of a phrasebook.

Lily rebuilt her Dreadling core around the Unheard Absolute, and for the first time since anyone had known her, her Dreadgate stopped making any sound at all when it opened, which unsettled even Benedict the first time he watched it happen beside her.

Rudra folded the Unmoved Current into the Fortification techniques he had spent a lifetime perfecting, and the change showed first in small ways, a step that landed without a footfall, a formation that held its shape a half-second longer than it should have under pressure, before it showed in the enormous way, when he stilled an entire practice bout mid-motion just to prove to Marcus that he could.

Ainen simply cooked, for days at a stretch, and what came off his fires afterward did more for the family’s combat power in an afternoon than a month of training normally managed, because the Grand Table did not know the difference between a meal and a weapon anymore, and neither, increasingly, did he.

Around the four of them, the rest of the kingdom used the same twenty days the same way. Natalia and Kayla rebuilt the ranged lines around lessons pulled hard-won from the rim. Silvester and Hiroshi drilled the vanguard until the interlocking patterns Maya had folded herself into stopped being a trick and became simply how the front line moved. Saffa, Clovelle, and Fraisea worked with Gopu on the claimed blueprints, and something enormous and half-finished began taking shape in the far end of the pocket world that nobody was allowed to look at yet.

Big D held the center of it all, the way he always had, an old rock letting the river reshape itself around him.

On the twentieth evening, the Hub lit up over the gathering ground, and every conversation in the pocket world stopped at once.

Marcus pulled the notice wide so the whole family could see it, and John, who had wandered over from his own portion of the layer sometime in the last week and simply never quite left, leaned in over Big D’s shoulder to read it with them.

”Thurmugin,” John said, and something flickered behind his easy smile. ”Now that’s an old one. Every few months some ambitious set of kingdoms tries to claim it, and every few months the ocean reminds them why it’s still unclaimed.”

”Walk us through it,” Big D said.

John did, and the family listened the way they listened to anything that might get them killed if they misheard it.

Every participating kingdom would be dropped onto a random island somewhere across the Thurmugin Ocean, scattered without warning and without say in the matter. From there, the war was simple to describe and brutal to survive. Islands held resources, relics, and territory. Kingdoms fought for them, against monsters native to the ocean and against each other, and whoever held the most when the event closed took the largest share of its rewards.

”And the ocean itself,” John said, ”has one rule that makes this event what it is. Nothing floats on Thurmugin unless it’s built from materials pulled out of Thurmugin itself. Bring a ship from home, drop it in that water, and it sinks like a stone, and takes whoever’s standing on it down with it. The only vessels that hold are the ones you build there, out of what that ocean actually gives you.”

”So the first fight in every campaign,” Rudra said slowly, already turning the shape of it over, ”is the fight to get off your own island at all.”

”Exactly.” John’s expression sobered. ”And the ocean doesn’t forgive mistakes. Anything that goes under the surface, anyone, has five seconds. If you’re still under water when that fifth second passes, you don’t come back up. You’re simply gone. Permanently, the first time it happens to you.”

The gathering ground went quiet at that.

”Every participant gets one revival,” John continued. ”Exactly one, and it has to come from your own kingdom’s own method, whatever that looks like for you. Use it, and you’re back in the fight. Die a second time, from the water or from anything else out there, and there is no coming back from it. That death is final, no matter whose hands are holding the method.”

”And because of that,” John added, quieter now, ”the event gives everyone an out. Once your one revival is spent, you’re offered the choice to withdraw. Nobody thinks less of the kingdoms that take it. Better a live soldier at home than a dead hero on a leaderboard nobody remembers by next month.”

Almond looked around the fire at the family that had climbed out of chains together, that had just spent three hundred days apart and come back stronger for it, and felt the four of them, without a word passing between them, arrive at the same answer at the same time.

”One life to lose,” Lily said, testing the shape of the rule the way she tested everything, ”and one chance to walk away after we lose it.”

”Sounds fair,” Ainen said, with the particular dry calm he reserved for things that were absolutely not fair at all. ”An ocean that kills you for showing up in the wrong boat, and offers you a polite door out after the first funeral.”

”We’ve fought worse odds for less,” Rudra said.

”We’ve fought worse odds for nothing at all,” Almond said, and there was no bravado in it, only the same flat honesty he brought to everything. ”This time there’s an ocean, some islands, and a leaderboard. I like our chances.”

Big D looked out at the gathered family, young and scarred and steady, and around the fire he saw no hesitation anywhere, only the particular readiness of people who had already survived the worst version of being afraid.

”Then we register,” he said. ”All of us who are able. Marcus, work the assignments. Everyone else, get what sleep you can, because the moment we accept, that ocean doesn’t wait for anyone to finish packing.”

Marcus’s hand moved through the Hub’s light, and the notice above the fire pulsed once, gold, and resolved into a final line.

The gathering ground held its breath together, four hundred strong, the way it had held its breath before every wall it had ever climbed.

Then the light took them, and the pocket world under the Virion Iridant Tree stood empty and quiet under its ancient branches, and somewhere far across a layer none of them had fully mapped yet, an ocean that answered to no one began, one by one, to open its islands to receive them.
