Chapter 927: The Hidden Hand

The name landed on the conference table with a weight Yuna felt in her own chest. Everyone in the awakened world knew it. ChronosX. The mana cameras. The women who turned out to have been inventory. The name had outgrown the man and become a category, the worst rapist and slaver the new era had produced, and its owner was currently rotting on death row for qualifying.

Mercer sat back down without appearing to notice he was doing it.

”We told her we did not know,” Ms. Rook continued. ”She told us to ’find’ evidence. So understand it, Mr. Mercer. Miss Ashborn has no interest in your ledger. Ledgers are our department. Hers is a simpler one, and it does not convene quarterly.”

”You’re threatening me.” It came out low, and it wanted to be angrier than it was. ”In my own conference room.”

”No one has threatened you. You were asked a question.” Ms. Rook laid her folded hands on top of the closed tablet. ”Men who are not like Maximilian have nothing to fear.”

The conference room clock ticked through the silence, and Yuna, three feet to the side of it all, understood two things at once. She was watching the Shadow Monarch conduct a negotiation without ever entering the room. And Doug, whom she’d spent the whole afternoon thinking of as the dangerous one, had been the mercy.

Doug leaned forward, and the warmth came back on like office lighting.

”And for everyone’s sake, I would dearly like to carry home the answer no. ’No, we did not find any evidence, Miss Ashborn, and I don’t think looking into this more will bear any fruit’ is what I hope to tell her. You’re just an ordinary guild who conducted a hard but ordinary negotiation that closed cleanly at a fair figure, today.”

He slid a single fresh sheet across the table and set his pen on top of it. ”Help me reach that conclusion, Mr. Mercer.”

Mercer looked at the sheet, and somewhere between the sheet and the pen resting on top of it, he finally understood which meeting he was in.

He had walked into this room prepared to negotiate with the Anomaly and his up-and-coming gang of hopefuls. A tent for a headquarters, a kaiju for a mascot, a stack of streaming and competition prize money, a leader the government had been forced to invent a letter for.

Formidable, yes, and young, playing its first corporate hand. Mercer had spent twenty years taking money off people who mistook fame for leverage.

He had not planned for the woman standing behind it.

Vespera Ashborn had taken New Dawn apart on her way out of a marriage.

A high-tier guild that had looked down on Skyline from the ceiling of the industry, stripped of its best assets and gutted by its own first lady, and the industry still argued about that divorce the way nations argue about old wars.

Half the analysts called it the cleanest corporate kill of the awakened era. The other half were convinced that every blow her son had since landed on New Dawn carried her insider knowledge behind it, and that she belonged in front of a judge for all of it. Nobody had ever tested the question in court, because testing it meant suing the Shadow Monarch.

New Dawn was still bleeding where she’d cut it. She had never answered for a single drop. The conference room had grown colder in the last few minutes, and Mercer caught himself blaming the air conditioning.

And then there was Ashbound. Stronger than Skyline by every metric that mattered, right up until it mattered. No lawsuit there either. Just one broadcast: that blonde bitch of theirs on camera, gently holding the hands of two crying girls, and the internet had done the rest of the demolition free of charge. Sponsors gone, contracts gone in a quarter, economic ruin administered warmly, in high definition.

He could already storyboard Yuna Park’s version of it with the blonde cunt holding her hands while they both cried those big, fake, crocodile tears the audience lapped up.

’Find’ evidence, the Rook woman had said, and Mercer had been in business long enough to hear the quotation marks. Whether the evidence existed or not made no difference to the outcome.

The question of whether he was another Maximilian was never going to be settled in a courtroom. Courtrooms belonged to the world of ledgers and committees, and the woman asking it had stopped living in that world when her husband declared war on their son.

That was the trick of Eclipse, he realized, with cold sweat gluing his shirt to his back. The memes, the tent, the streams, the puppy the size of a cathedral. A guild you laughed along with, led by the greatest rising stars of the world.

But underneath the laughter and the anticipation of the young leadership, steered from the shadows by the Monarch herself, a war machine was rolling toward the top of the world over the ruins of everyone who had stood on its road: New Dawn, Ashbound, and whoever wanted to be next. Even the Association itself had to show favoritism over and over again, for that psychopath would not stop until her son ruled the greatest guild in history.

If Skyline volunteered itself as a lesson along the way, she would not slow her stride long enough to watch it burn.

He had seen her exactly once, across an Association ballroom, back before anyone had heard of Kaiden Grey. The air had felt colder in a ring around her, and every powerful man in that room had quietly arranged himself to keep her in view, like herd animals unwilling to show their backs to the grass. He remembered his own relief, that evening, that Skyline was too small for her to ever look at.

That memory sat across his conference table now, wearing a pleasant HR smile, offering to help him with its phrasing.

The cold reached his throat first, closing around it with the patience of a hand deciding where to grip. Then the shadows moved. The seam of dark under the door stretched, the shade beneath the conference table crawled toward his chair, and the pressure on his windpipe clamped down.

The Shadow Monarch had come for him.

”Awakened violence!” The scream ripped out of Mercer on the way to his feet, his chair skidding back, one hand tearing his collar loose. ”Awakened violence against a civilian! There are witnesses in this room- you can’t-”

The shout rang off the glass and died.

His head snapped from corner to corner, hunting the attack, and the conference room gave him nothing back. The gray suit sat petrified over his legal pad, Yuna was staring at him with her lips parted, and neither Doug’s mild smile nor Ms. Rook’s folded hands had shifted a millimeter.

And the shadows lay exactly where the ceiling lights had cast them, under the door and beneath the table, gray and mundane and perfectly still. Nothing in the conference room had moved except him.

”Mr. Mercer?” Doug asked, mildly, the way he might have asked about parking validation.

His chest heaved against his open collar while the silence stretched. There was no mana in the air and no monarch in the room, and Vespera Ashborn had closed a hand around his windpipe anyway, from miles away, using nothing but her name and shadows he paid the electric bill on.

He lowered himself back into his chair one joint at a time, and across the table, Doug nudged the pen an inch closer to him.

His mouth had gone dry around the taste of the room’s old coffee. He looked, last, at Yuna, his gem, his cornerstone, two more years of scheduled leverage sitting there in a navy blouse, and found nothing in her face that still belonged to him.

Then he did the oldest arithmetic in corporate history, survival divided by pride, and reached his answer where everyone could watch him reach it.

”Get the committee on a video call,” he told the gray suit. ”They can convene today.”

The next hour was red ink. Line by line, Ms. Rook walked the ledger down while Doug handled the committee members’ objections with unhurried patience, repeating each point as many times as it took. By the time the final draft printed, the figure at the bottom had shed the premium and a healthy slice of the principal behind it. The final agreement was nearly half of what stood in her buyout statement.
