Nie Qingru knew they had called her over for this matter, so she was not flustered.

As the other party spoke, she lowered her head and sipped the coffee. Then, she slowly put down the cup and said disdainfully, “Does the Privy Council have nothing to do? You’re so free that you even have to care about such a small matter!”

Her attitude was extremely unyielding!

Under normal circumstances, with her status, no one would dare to offend her if she intended to protect Nie Qixing.

But it was different this time!

The person who spoke did not care about her domineering question at all. Instead, he frowned and said with a serious expression, “You once said that you wanted him to be the successor. If he’s just a Nie family member, the Privy Council certainly wouldn’t care about such things, but if he wants to inherit your position, then we certainly have to.”

Nie Qingru slammed the table with a dark face. “How dare you!”

She looked around the round table. Her gaze paused on the archbishop and the others before landing on the speaker. It was as sharp as a knife. “Don’t forget that the imperial power is above all power! Even the Privy Council has no right to question my decision!”

She took a deep breath and calmed down, then coldly said, “Besides, apart from Qixing, who else is suitable to take over my position?”

The parliament hall was silent.

At this moment…

“Heh.” Someone chuckled casually.

Then, Nie Qingru’s pupils constricted. A middle-aged man in a red robe stood up and faced her.

“Empress, have you forgotten someone?”

Nie Qingru seemed to realize who he was referring to.

Her face immediately fell.

Quentin wouldn’t take her pressure as a threat. He smiled and said, “If I remember correctly, the Ji family has a direct descendant related to you by blood. Qiao Nian. She’s also qualified to inherit your position.”

The parliament hall was in an uproar.

“Qiao Nian is the Empress’s granddaughter?”

“That’s right. Someone’s already said she’s a direct descendant of the Ji family— If she’s a direct descendant, doesn’t that mean she’s the Empress’s—”

Everyone knew Nie Qingru had a sore spot that could not be mentioned. That was the past of her marriage with the Ji family of the independent continent when she was young.

All of this was replayed. Those discussions were like steel knives stabbing into her heart, forcing her to face the past again.

“Enough.”

She had just spoken when an unexpected person stood up for her. “Archbishop, I’m afraid Qiao Nian isn’t suitable, right?”

Elder Xue suddenly spoke up for Nie Qingru, and the discussions in the parliament hall gradually stopped. Everyone looked at him in disbelief.

Even the conservative faction he belonged to looked at him strangely.

Everyone knew that Elder Xue and the Empress did not get along.

However, on this matter, Elder Xue stood on Nie Qingru’s side. “Although she’s qualified to inherit the Empress’s position, she has been wandering outside all this time and has yet to be truly recognized by the Ji family. She has yet to be recorded in the family tree. Under such circumstances, she can’t be considered to have truly inherited the Ji family’s bloodline, so she’s not the Empress’s granddaughter.”

They were clearly related by blood, but he easily erased this connection by citing she was not officially in the family tree.

Nie Qingru’s expression softened and she added, “She’s not suitable to take over the reclusive families.”

Quentin did not expect them to stand together and sneered. He did not give Nie Qingru much face and asked, “Then is Young Master Nie suitable?”
