Reborn in the Eighties as a Housewife with a Space

Chapter 1728: Chapter 1722: Nangong Shulan’s Self-Blame

“Mom, are you alright?” Qin Xue looked at her mother and asked.

“I’m fine. Now that the child is back, that’s all that matters.” Nangong Shulan let out a sigh of relief, releasing the gloom she’d been holding in for two days.

“Mom, you’re overthinking this. I’ve told you already, it was an accident—it wasn’t your fault.” Qin Xue knew her mother would place all the blame on herself.

No one wanted this incident to happen, so Qin Xue felt it wasn’t her mother’s fault. But that’s how elders are—thinking that once something goes wrong, it’s their own fault, their own responsibility for not doing well enough. Yet isn’t that so unfair to them?

Qin Xue had seen similar cases in her past life. In her hometown, a couple had gone out to work and left their child in the care of the grandparents. Later, due to a moment of negligence, the child was killed in a car accident.

When the child’s parents returned, they kept blaming the grandparents for not watching the child carefully. From that point on, the couple never dared to let the grandparents help with childcare again. And since then, the relationship between the couple and the grandparents turned into one of hostility, where they couldn’t stand each other and constantly found fault.

This turned the entire family into enemies. Originally, the child’s accident was something everyone wished hadn’t happened and something no one wanted to see. But after it happened, the adults in the family kept blaming each other, and that was hard to accept.

Later, the family had two more children, yet the mother always raised the children on her own afterward. Meanwhile, the relationship with the grandparents remained as strained as if they were enemies.

The grandparents were deeply hurt. Years passed, and she still blamed herself, saying that if she’d just held the child’s hand tightly and not let her run around, the accident wouldn’t have happened. But she hadn’t anticipated that among so many kids playing, it would be her grandchild who met with tragedy. This incident haunted her for the rest of her life, and she lived with guilt for the rest of her days.

Qin Xue was now afraid her own mother might end up like that elder from the village—that was something Qin Xue could never bear to see.

“Qin Xue, Mom is fine. You don’t need to worry.” Nangong Shulan said she understood it wasn’t her fault, but it was her moment of negligence. Otherwise, this wouldn’t have happened, and that was where her guilt stemmed from.

Her daughter had asked her to help with childcare, but she had nearly caused an irreversible mistake. No one would be able to approve of or move past such a thing in their hearts.

“Alright then.” Qin Xue didn’t know how to comfort her further. Forget it, let her come to terms with it herself. The more Qin Xue said, the more guilty her mother would feel. Thinking of this, she said no more but instead focused on preparing the meal—there were still people waiting outside, and she couldn’t afford to drag this out too long.

Meanwhile, outside, Ji Dong finished taking statements from the Qins. By the time he was done, Qin Xue had finished cooking. After the meal, Ji Dong went straight to Qin Su’e’s house.

“What’re you people doing here?” Mr. Qin stared at the people in his house. Had something happened again?

“Are you Mr. Qin?” Ji Dong asked.

“Yes, that’s me.” Mr. Qin couldn’t exactly deny it.

“Your daughter is suspected of kidnapping. We need to take her in for questioning. Please cooperate with our investigation.” Ji Dong hadn’t initially thought a madwoman would be involved.

But after hearing what Yu Ze said and seeing Jingtao’s composite sketch, Ji Dong had no choice but to acknowledge the truth—people really couldn’t be judged by appearances.

The things you’re least likely to believe always somehow end up happening, and they happen in ways that catch you completely off guard.

“She’s been home the whole time. How could she be suspected of kidnapping?” Mr. Qin looked at Ji Dong incredulously. His daughter had lost her mind; how could she possibly go outside and hurt people?
