Chapter 165: Chapter 95: Entering the Commandery City, Meeting the Prefect!

After all, those rich landlords from the countryside loved this kind of ostentation the most.

Watching the soldiers swarm around them, Zheng Jun merely lifted the curtain slightly. His gaze was cold and sinister, scanning the surroundings like a hawk.

Meeting Zheng Jun’s dark, fierce stare, the soldiers who had intended to inspect the carriage froze in their tracks, breaking out in a cold sweat.

Zheng Jun gave a cold snort. Cai Liu, who was driving the carriage, unceremoniously presented a Token. ”You dare to block the Cai Family’s carriage? Sitting inside is the newly appointed Squad Commander of the Black Mountain Stronghold, Lord Zheng Jun, who has been personally summoned by the Lord Governor! Now, get out of the way!”

Hearing the words ”Cai Family” and ”Squad Commander,” the city gate guards were given quite a fright. However, they still braced themselves and said, ”My lord, Lord Tang has personally issued an order. The bandits are about to raid our borders, so we must check how many people are in your carriage...”

”Take a look.”

Zheng Jun pulled the curtain back. Only after the soldier took a quick peek did he look relieved, hurriedly stepping aside to clear the way so Zheng Jun’s carriage could enter the city.

Without any hesitation, Cai Liu drove the carriage straight into the city. As the carriage advanced, the residents made way.

Seeing this, Zheng Jun couldn’t help but sigh. ”The Cai Family is far too ostentatious.”

For a family planning a rebellion, they were surprisingly flashy within the commandery city. Were they not worried about inviting disaster?

”Sixth Master Cai, please drive the carriage to Nixiang Pavilion.”

At this moment, Qingdai suddenly spoke up, her crisp voice directed at Cai Liu outside. ”The Young Master’s residence for the next few days in the city has been arranged at Nixiang Pavilion.”

”Nixiang Pavilion?”

Cai Liu drew in a sharp breath of cold air. That was the most expensive establishment in the entire city, where every inch of land was worth its weight in gold!

Zheng Jun didn’t know anything about this Nixiang Pavilion, but as long as he had a place to stay, it was fine. Avoiding a regular inn would also save some silver.

However, he immediately called for the carriage to stop. ”You guys go and drop off the luggage first. I will head to the Governor’s Mansion alone. Arriving in a carriage would be too ostentatious and inappropriate.

”You can just come pick me up at the Governor’s Mansion later.”

Hearing Zheng Jun’s words, Cai Liu wanted to say something, but after a moment of thought, he realized it made sense. He promptly nodded in agreement, dropped Zheng Jun off, and continued on toward Nixiang Pavilion.

After getting out, Zheng Jun found a random street stall and spent a little silver to buy two pears. He casually asked for directions to the Governor’s Mansion and then strolled over, munching on his pears along the way.

Zheng Jun was dressed in his Official Robe with his Token tied to his waist. He arrived at the Governor’s Mansion smoothly, only to be stopped by the guards stationed at the entrance. ”Who goes there?”

The guards at the Governor’s Mansion were truly elite soldiers. Even the regular foot soldiers were Blood Refining Martial Artists.

Seeing this, Zheng Jun replied very politely, ”I am Zheng Jun, former Captain of the Black Mountain Guard and current Squad Commander of the Pingzhang Camp at the Black Mountain Fortress. The Prefect summoned me previously, and having arrived in the city today, I have come specifically to pay my respects to the Prefect.”

”So it is General Zheng.”

Upon hearing this, the soldiers immediately cupped their fists and said, ”Please wait a moment, General Zheng. We must announce your arrival before we can let you in.”

A Squad Commander was a military post. According to popular folk tales, it was equivalent to a Deputy General. Therefore, as a matter of professional courtesy and mutual flattery, addressing him as a General wasn’t an issue.

Hearing this, Zheng Jun cupped his fists in thanks. He preferred to maintain a low profile. He, Zheng Jun, had never been fond of fighting; peace was his highest priority.

Zheng Jun waited patiently in front of the Governor’s Mansion. He originally thought it would take some time, but unexpectedly, after only the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, he saw a figure hurrying out of the mansion.

The newcomer wore a scarlet Official Robe embroidered with a mandarin duck pattern on the chest. He approached with great enthusiasm, and upon seeing Zheng Jun, he looked overjoyed. Stepping forward immediately, he said with deep sincerity, ”Zheng San has finally arrived! I have been longing for you, Zheng San, just as a severe drought longs for rain!”

His sincere words caught Zheng Jun somewhat off guard. Looking at the scarlet Official Robe and the mandarin duck pattern, he knew exactly who this person was.

It was none other than the magistrate of Pingzhang Commandery—Governor Tang Yu, Lord Tang!

But soon, Zheng Jun noticed one detail. Governor Tang Yu had actually come out barefoot. He was only wearing silk socks.

For a moment, Zheng Jun struggled to maintain his composure. He thought, ”You’re pulling this old trick too?”
