Chapter 77: Extra Chapter. [Their not so normal daily life in a Xianxia world.]

The morning bell of Baiyun Sect rang through the mountain valley as the first light of dawn touched the jade tiles, the stone bridges, and the rows of cloud white halls. Mist still drifted between the peaks, curling like silk around the outer gates and the sword practice grounds. Far below, the mortal road was only a thin silver line, hidden in the early fog, while above, the sect’s great protective array shimmered faintly like a clear sky made of light. Bai Li stood on the highest terrace of the main hall with her hands behind her back, her black robe moving slightly in the wind. She looked down at the whole sect with calm eyes, her face as still as polished jade. From this place, she could see the medicine garden, the beast hall, the scripture pavilion, the disciple lodgings, and the long line of outer disciples already waiting for morning lessons. Baiyun Sect had once been only a small and quiet place she and Yan Cijin had built together with their own hands, but now it had become one of the strongest sects on the whole continent. The name of Bai Li and Yan Cijin was spoken with respect everywhere. Both of them had already reached the Tribulation Realm, and in the world of cultivation, that meant they stood at the very top. Yet Bai Li still liked to rise early, just to look at the sect they had made together. The sight of it always made her chest feel warm.

Behind her, the door of the main hall opened with a soft sound. Yan Cijin walked out, carrying a cup of warm spirit tea in one hand and a small plate of steamed spirit cakes in the other. She wore a pale blue robe today, with her long hair only half tied, giving her a gentle look that made even the cold morning feel softer. ”You are still standing here,” she said with a smile, coming to Bai Li’s side. ”If you keep watching the mountain like this, will it grow more disciple slots for you?” Bai Li turned her head and looked at her wife. The serious expression on her face changed at once. ”If you came out sooner, I would not have had to wait alone.” Yan Cijin laughed softly and held out the tea. ”You waited only a short while. The tea is still warm.” Bai Li took it, brushed her fingers lightly over Yan Cijin’s hand, and took a sip. The spirit tea had a light sweet scent, and there was a little honey leaf mixed in the water, which she knew Yan Cijin had added on purpose because she liked it that way. Bai Li’s lips softened. ”You spoiled me again.” ”Yes,” Yan Cijin said, not even trying to deny it. ”I married you for that reason.” Bai Li gave her a small look, and Yan Cijin only smiled more, as if she had won a great battle. Then she lifted the plate. ”Eat. You have not had breakfast.” Bai Li let her guide her back inside without resistance. The whole sect feared the sect master when she frowned, but Yan Cijin alone could make her step down from the terrace and come eat like an ordinary person.

The two of them ate breakfast in the small side room connected to the main hall, where the windows looked out over the floating sword field. The room was plain compared with the grand halls outside, but it was the place they liked best. Bai Li sat at the table, while Yan Cijin placed several dishes in front of her with practiced care, as if feeding her was the most natural thing in the world. There were spirit eggs, mountain mushroom dumplings, and a bowl of porridge made from white jade rice. Bai Li took the chopsticks but did not start at once. Instead, she looked at Yan Cijin, who was sitting across from her and only pretending to eat. ”Why are you watching me?” Bai Li asked. Yan Cijin rested her chin on one hand. ”Because you look good when you eat.” Bai Li was silent for a moment, then lowered her head and ate a dumpling. Yan Cijin watched her with bright eyes. ”Also because you were busy all yesterday. You had three meetings, reviewed the new sword array, and went to the ancestral hall to check the seal on the eastern ridge. You should eat more.” Bai Li swallowed the food and asked, ”You remember all of that?” ”Of course. I am your wife and the sect’s second master. If I do not remember, who will?” Bai Li’s gaze grew soft. The sect was large now. There were elders, hall masters, and tens of thousands of disciples. There were endless matters to handle every day. But no matter how much work piled up, Yan Cijin always remembered the small things Bai Li forgot to care for in herself. Bai Li reached across the table and lightly held her hand for a moment. ”Then I will eat more,” she said. Yan Cijin’s smile deepened. ”Good.” Outside the window, sword light passed like silver rain as the morning class began. Inside, the world was quiet and warm.

After breakfast, they went their separate ways for a while, though in truth they were never far apart for long. Bai Li spent the next few hours in the main hall reviewing reports from the elders. The spirit herb fields in the south had grown well this year. The forging hall had made a new batch of long swords for the inner disciples. The guard formation around the third peak still held, but one of the outer spirit veins had been damaged by a recent storm, so it needed repair. Several elders stood below her steps, speaking in careful voices, while Bai Li listened with a calm face and asked only the right questions. She had always been good at this. Her mind was clear, her judgment sharp, and when she spoke, people listened. That was part of why Baiyun Sect had risen so fast in only a few short years. Yet even while she sat there looking like a cold and fearless sect master, she still kept one hand near the small jade pendant at her waist. It was shaped like a cloud and a cinnabar flower, a gift from Yan Cijin. When she touched it, she could almost feel Yan Cijin’s warmth in the stone. On the other side of the mountain, Yan Cijin was in the medicine hall checking spirit pills, speaking with alchemists, and helping two nervous young disciples who had made a small mistake in the refining process. She did not scold them. She only explained in a soft voice, showed them what had gone wrong, and then gave them another chance. The disciples looked at her with deep respect. Their sect wife was kind, but no one thought she was weak. Everyone knew she had once crossed a thunder sea alone to save Bai Li during a fatal tribulation. That story had become part of the sect’s legend, though Yan Cijin herself only laughed when people brought it up. ”It was not that grand,” she would say. ”I was just going to fetch my wife home.”

At noon, Bai Li stepped out of the main hall and found Yan Cijin waiting under the willow bridge with two bowls of noodles in hand. The bridge hung over a clear spirit river, and the breeze carried the smell of herbs from the garden below. Bai Li stopped when she saw her. Yan Cijin smiled and lifted one bowl slightly. ”I had someone cook this just now. You missed lunch because you were arguing with Elder Lu about the west gate array.” Bai Li walked over, a little helpless. ”It was not an argument.” Yan Cijin raised her brows. ”He almost shouted.” Bai Li took the bowl anyway. ”That is still not an argument.” ”Then you were both very serious at each other.” Bai Li could not help the small smile on her face. ”You are always on his side when it comes to word games.” Yan Cijin sat beside her on the stone bench and began to eat. ”I am on your side. I just know when you are stubborn.” Bai Li took a bite of the noodles. The soup was light, with spirit mushrooms and a little smoked meat from the snow valley. She tasted the familiar seasoning and knew Yan Cijin had chosen the shop herself. ”This is good,” she said. ”Of course it is,” Yan Cijin replied. ”I chose it after hearing that you skipped lunch twice this week.” Bai Li glanced at her. ”You are watching me too much.” ”That is impossible. I am your wife.” Bai Li lowered her eyes and ate more. The two sat together for a while, the water below them moving slowly, while disciples passed at a distance and did not dare disturb them. When Yan Cijin finished first, she did not rise. Instead, she leaned her shoulder gently against Bai Li’s arm and looked out at the garden. ”Do you remember when we first founded the sect?” she asked softly. Bai Li paused, then nodded. ”We had three halls, one broken spirit vein, and an old crow living on the roof.” Yan Cijin laughed. ”And you said we would make it the strongest sect in the continent.” Bai Li looked at the distant peaks. ”I said we would build a place no one could take from us.” Yan Cijin turned her head to look at her. The wind moved a few strands of hair across Bai Li’s cheek, and Yan Cijin reached up to brush them away. ”And we did,” she said. ”We really did.”

The afternoon was for training. Baiyun Sect’s inner disciples gathered on the sword field to watch Bai Li and Yan Cijin give guidance. This was one of the greatest days for any disciple, because seeing two Tribulation Realm powerhouses use their own methods was like seeing the path ahead in bright light. Bai Li stood at the center of the field and showed a sword stance. It looked simple at first glance, but when she moved, the whole sky seemed to change with it. Her sword light was clean and sharp, cutting through the wind with such ease that even the clouds above seemed to split. The disciples all stared in awe. Yan Cijin watched from the side with her arms folded. After Bai Li finished, she turned to her wife. ”What do you think?” Yan Cijin did not answer right away. She walked up, studied Bai Li’s posture, then reached out and pressed two fingers gently against Bai Li’s wrist. ”You were slightly too fast at the last turn.” Bai Li looked at her. ”You noticed that?” ”Of course. Your left shoulder lifted half a breath early.” Bai Li gave her a long look, then sighed. ”You notice everything about me.” Yan Cijin smiled with clear pride. ”That is because I am your wife.” Then she stepped onto the field herself. Her weapon was a soft silver whip that could turn into a ribbon of light. She moved it once, and the air in front of her curved gently, as if even the wind did not wish to resist her. Bai Li watched from the side now, her eyes fixed on every move. Yan Cijin’s style was not as cold as hers. It was smooth and flowing, but beneath that softness was deep power. The two of them had often fought side by side in the past, when their sect was still weak and enemies came from many directions. Now that their sect was strong, they used their power less often for war and more often to teach, guard, and protect. But the memory of past battles still lived between them, and perhaps that was part of why they trusted each other so completely. After the lessons ended, the disciples bowed and went away in great excitement. Some whispered that the sect master and sect wife were even more beautiful when they stood together in the afternoon light. Yan Cijin heard this and only smiled. Bai Li heard it too and gave a cold glance in that direction, which made the young disciples scatter even faster. Once the field was empty, Yan Cijin walked to Bai Li and said, ”You scared them.” Bai Li replied, ”They were staring too much.” ”You were staring too.” Bai Li was silent for a second. Then she said very seriously, ”I was allowed.” Yan Cijin blinked, then laughed so hard she had to lean against her wife’s shoulder. Bai Li held her steady with one hand at her back, and the two stood there in the open field while the sun moved toward evening.

That night, the two of them did not return to the main hall for work. Yan Cijin had already cleared their schedule and told the elders that anything unimportant could wait until tomorrow. Since the sect was now strong enough, there were times when the two leaders could finally give themselves one evening alone. Bai Li found Yan Cijin in the bamboo garden behind their private residence, where the moonlight fell through thin leaves and silvered the stone path. Yan Cijin had changed into a simple inner robe, and she was sitting on a low table with a small jar of spirit wine and two cups. ”You set this up?” Bai Li asked as she stepped closer. Yan Cijin lifted the jar with one hand. ”A date. Just the two of us.” Bai Li’s expression softened at once. She walked over and sat beside her wife. The bamboo leaves swayed gently overhead. Somewhere in the distance, a night bird called once and then was silent. Yan Cijin poured the wine and handed one cup to Bai Li. ”You worked so hard today.” Bai Li accepted it. ”So did you.” Yan Cijin tilted her head. ”I know. That is why we deserve this.” Bai Li took a sip and found the wine sweet, with a faint flower taste. Yan Cijin smiled when she saw her reaction. ”I asked the cook to add peach spirit.” Bai Li looked at her. ”You remembered I like that.” ”Of course I did.” Yan Cijin leaned in a little. ”I remember everything about you.” Bai Li reached out and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Yan Cijin’s ear. ”Then you know I like this kind of night most.” ”Quiet?” ”No.” Bai Li’s thumb brushed Yan Cijin’s cheek. ”A quiet night with you.” Yan Cijin’s eyes went soft. She set down her cup and moved closer until their shoulders touched. Bai Li turned slightly and kissed her. It was a slow kiss, warm and full of all the things they did not need to say out loud. Years of love sat between them like a deep river, steady and clear. Yan Cijin answered the kiss without hesitation, one hand resting on Bai Li’s sleeve, the other sliding to her waist. When they finally pulled apart, both of them were smiling a little. Yan Cijin rested her forehead against Bai Li’s. ”You always look calmer after kissing me.” Bai Li gave a low hum. ”You always make me calm.” Yan Cijin laughed softly. ”Then I should be charged more spirit stones.” Bai Li gave her a helpless look. ”You already have my whole heart.” Yan Cijin stopped smiling for a moment, then hugged her very tightly. Bai Li held her back without a word. Under the bamboo, with moonlight on their hair and the wind moving around them, they simply stayed that way for a long time, drinking slowly, kissing now and then, and speaking of small things. They talked about the eldest elder’s strange new beard braid, about a young disciple who had fallen asleep during class, about the west gate array, and about the spirit peaches that would soon be ready on the third peak. Everything felt ordinary, yet nothing was ordinary at all, because every simple moment was shared.

Later, after the jar of wine was half empty and the moon had moved farther across the sky, they returned to their room. Their private chamber was not large, but it was quiet and comfortable, with a soft bed, clean curtains, and a warm spirit lamp by the table. Bai Li closed the door behind them while Yan Cijin took off her outer robe and placed it neatly over a chair. Then she turned and saw Bai Li standing there watching her with that calm, thoughtful face she had always loved. ”What are you looking at?” Yan Cijin asked. Bai Li stepped closer. ”My wife.” Yan Cijin’s lips curved. ”That is too broad. Look more carefully.” Bai Li took her hand and brought it to her lips. ”My home.” Yan Cijin went still for a second, then looked away, her ears turning slightly red. Bai Li’s eyes softened. ”You blush too easily.” Yan Cijin raised her chin. ”That is because you keep saying strange things.” Bai Li only smiled and lifted Yan Cijin into her arms with easy care, as if she weighed no more than a feather. Yan Cijin made a small sound of surprise, then laughed and looped her arms around Bai Li’s neck. ”You still carry me like this.” ”You like it.” ”I do,” Yan Cijin admitted openly. Bai Li carried her to the bed and sat down with her still in her arms. For a little while they only looked at each other. There was so much love in that silence that neither of them needed to rush. Bai Li brushed her fingers over Yan Cijin’s face, her brow, her nose, her lips, as if she were memorizing her all over again. Yan Cijin caught her hand and kissed the palm. ”You have been working too hard lately,” she whispered. ”You should rest.” Bai Li lowered her head to rest against her wife’s shoulder. ”I am resting now.” Yan Cijin laughed softly and stroked her hair. The room grew quieter. Outside, the sect was asleep. The grand arrays glowed at a distance like a field of stars, guarding every peak. Inside, Bai Li and Yan Cijin lay together under soft blankets, their bodies close, their breathing slowly matching. Bai Li held Yan Cijin against her chest, one hand drawing slow circles at her back. Yan Cijin’s fingers slipped into Bai Li’s hair, then down to her neck, gentle and familiar. They kissed again, longer this time, until the world outside felt far away and unneeded. What happened after that belonged only to them, hidden behind the curtain and the soft light, full of warmth, trust, and the kind of love that only grows deeper with time. Their voices grew quiet, their laughter soft, and the night folded around them like a private dream.

Long after the lamp was dimmed, they still did not sleep right away. Yan Cijin lay with her head on Bai Li’s shoulder and traced small lines over her wife’s hand. ”Tomorrow,” she said sleepily, ”there are still three old reports, two minor disputes, and a hall meeting after noon.” Bai Li sighed in mock sadness. ”You ruined the night by remembering that.” Yan Cijin smiled without opening her eyes. ”I did not ruin it. I am simply reminding you that you are a powerful sect master and cannot be lazy forever.” Bai Li bent her head and kissed her forehead. ”Then what should I do now?” Yan Cijin’s smile deepened, soft and loving. ”Hold me tighter.” Bai Li did exactly that. Yan Cijin let out a content little sound and tucked herself even closer. The room was dark now, but not lonely. It was full of the warmth they had made together over many years, through storms, through tribulation, through long workdays and short nights, through all the little meals and all the little kisses and all the many ordinary days that had slowly become a lifetime. Bai Li looked down at the face in her arms and thought that no matter how high the sky was, no matter how strong the sect became, no matter how many people called her by title with fear or respect, the one place she always returned to was Yan Cijin’s arms. Yan Cijin, half asleep, mumbled something soft and held her tighter in return. Bai Li kissed her once more on the brow and closed her eyes. Outside, the wind moved across the peaks. Inside, the two Tribulation Realm powerhouses slept side by side like any ordinary married couple, safe, warm, and deeply in love.
