Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

Dante shook his hand but didn’t smile.

”Walk with me,” Dante said.

They moved through the club, past the bar, past the gaming tables, past the private VIP sections, toward the back office. Nobody tried to stop them. Nobody even looked directly at them. This was the way of the underworld: when a man like Dante Romano walked through your business, you pretended you didn’t notice, and you hoped he was walking through toward someone else’s problem.

In Chen’s office, Dante settled into a leather chair. Chen closed the door and sat behind his desk, his posture perfect, his expression controlled.

”How long have you been running this operation?” Dante asked.

”Five years,” Chen said. His hands were steady. That meant something. Fear made hands shake, but control, actual professional control...kept them still.

”Profitable?” Dante asked.

”Very,” Chen said. ”Dimitri’s been happy with the numbers.”

”Dimitri won’t be running Brooklyn much longer,” Dante said without preamble. ”I’m taking over. Systematically. Territory by territory. Dealer by dealer. This club, these operations, everything Valentino built here is about to become mine.”

Chen was quiet, processing this information.

”I’m offering you an opportunity,” Dante continued. ”You can maintain this operation. Same club, same setup, same profitable numbers. All you have to do is switch your loyalty. All you have to do is work for me instead of working for a man who’s about to lose everything.”

”And if I refuse?” Chen asked.

”Then someone else runs this club,” Dante said. ”And you lose everything you’ve built here.”

Chen leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled together, thinking.

”My daughter has a medical condition,” Chen said finally. ”Type 1 diabetes. Her insulin costs are high. My insurance doesn’t cover everything. I have to make up the difference out of pocket.”

Dante understood immediately. This wasn’t about money for luxury. This was about money for survival.

”How much?” Dante asked.

”Four thousand a month,” Chen said. ”Beyond what insurance covers.”

”I’ll double it,” Dante said. ”Eight thousand a month, automatically transferred. You run my operation, and your daughter’s medical costs are handled completely. No more money out of pocket. No more choosing between insulin and rent.”

Chen’s expression shifted...not gratitude, exactly, but the recognition of a man who’d just been offered a way out of a financial trap that had been squeezing him for years.

”And if Valentino retaliated?” Chen asked. ”If he came after me?”

”He won’t,” Dante said. ”Because by the time he understands what’s happening, he’ll have bigger problems. And because I protect what’s mine. Your daughter’s security would be part of my responsibility.”

Chen was quiet for a long moment, and Dante could see the calculation happening behind his eyes, the cost of loyalty versus the cost of his daughter’s wellbeing. The weight of family versus the weight of honor.

”Okay,” Chen said finally. ”Okay, I’m in.”

”Good,” Dante said. ”You’ll have the first medical payment transfer authorization within forty-eight hours. In the meantime, you stop reporting to Valentino and start reporting to me. Anyone asks, you tell them you switched because Valentino’s declining power made the operation unstable.”

Dante stood.

”Keep running this place the way you’ve been running it,” Dante said. ”Nothing changes except who you answer to. Clear?”

”Clear,” Chen said.

The next stop was to a warehouse in Sunset Park which was neutral territory, not technically belonging to anyone, but understood by everyone in the underworld to be a place where deals happened and violence was secondary to negotiation.

Dante arrived at 1:00 AM with Paolo and Giancarlo.

Inside, seven of Dimitri’s secondary dealers were waiting. They’d been summoned, one by one, over the previous three days. They had no idea what the meeting was about, but they knew that when Dante Romano asked you to be somewhere, you were there or you were making a very serious mistake.

The seven men stood in a rough circle in the center of the warehouse. Industrial lights hung from the ceiling, casting harsh shadows. The air smelled like concrete and diesel fuel.

Dante walked into the center of the circle, slow and deliberate, making his presence known without needing to say anything.

”Thank you for coming,” Dante said, his voice echoing slightly off the concrete walls. ”I know you weren’t expecting this meeting. But I think you’re all smart enough to understand why you’re here.”

One of the dealers, a man named Ric who’d been running operations in Bay Ridge, stepped forward.

”We’re here because you called us,” Ric said, and there was a challenge in his voice, the kind of bravado that came from not understanding yet what was about to happen to him. ”But I don’t appreciate being summoned like I’m your lapdog. I run my own operation. I answer to Dimitri Valentino.”

”Dimitri Valentino doesn’t control Brooklyn anymore,” Dante said, and his voice was absolutely calm. ”I do. As of this morning, three of your fellow operators have already switched loyalty. Two more are in the middle of negotiations. By the end of this week, every single dealer in Brooklyn will be working for me.”

”Not me,” Ric said. ”I’ve been with Valentino for seven years. I’m not switching because you show up and make demands.”

Dante nodded to Paolo.

Paolo pulled out a tablet and showed the screen to Ricco. On it was a photograph of Ric’s wife leaving their apartment. Then a photograph of his daughter arriving at school. Then a photograph of his mother at the grocery store.

The photographs had timestamps. All from the past two days.

Ric’s face went pale.

”You understand now,” Dante said quietly. ”Your family isn’t yours to protect. Not when you’re a dealer in a territory being contested. They’re just assets that can be used for leverage. And I have the resources to make their lives very uncomfortable if you decide to be stubborn.”

Ric’s hands were shaking now.

”I’m not going to hurt them,” Dante continued. ”But that’s only because you’re going to be smart. You’re going to understand that loyalty to Valentino is a liability now. You’re going to understand that the wind has changed direction, and you need to change with it.”
