And so, Chen Jie sat from the afternoon until the evening.

After finishing dinner, Chen Jie returned to the study, picking up a book and browsing through it at random. Su Yunjin glanced in from the doorway, then left with Yin Hongmei.

”Don’t disturb the husband, he must have important things to do.”

Without realizing it, it was already around eight o’clock in the evening when another wave of drowsiness hit Chen Jie. At that moment, the door suddenly opened. Chen Jie looked up and saw it was the maid Cuiju.

Cuiju, for some reason, had put on makeup and dressed herself up very attractively today. She now came to Chen Jie with a bowl of lotus seed soup and said, ”Old Master, it’s late, have something to eat to warm up your body.”

”Oh, just put it there.”

Chen Jie casually responded.

Then he continued to look at the book in his hand.

Upon hearing this, Cuiju did not leave but said instead, ”Old Master, your shoulders must be sore, let me give you a massage.”

Chen Jie glanced at her and said, ”It’s late, go back and rest.”

”It’s fine, I’m not tired!”

Saying so, Cuiju came behind Chen Jie and her soft hands gently pressed on his shoulders.

It has to be said, it felt quite comfortable.

This was also a trick Cuiju had learned from her mother.

Her mother managed to go from being a maid to a favored concubine, naturally, she had some special techniques.

Like this shoulder massage technique, that was truly unique.

The massage began quite ordinarily, but gradually, Chen Jie felt something was amiss. It was as if there were two balls of water vapor moving up and down on his shoulders and neck, and he began to feel a different kind of sensation.

”Hmm.”

Chen Jie felt that this was different.

At the same time, Cuiju’s voice was heard beside his ear: ”Old Master, ah~ does it feel good?”

”This is my unique skill, Old Master, do you want to take off your clothes? It will feel even better.”

Chen Jie was well aware of how Cuiju was massaging.

This wasn’t a maid, this was more like a professional masseuse.

The young maids nowadays sure are bold, daring to try anything. Chen Jie found it amusing. Did he have such talent in his mansion?

Just as Chen Jie was hesitating about whether to take it further,

suddenly, a voice came from outside the door: ”Husband, it’s getting late, you should sleep...”

The voice stopped abruptly, as Su Yunjin, accompanied by the maid Yin Hongmei, stood frozen at the door.

They saw Chen Jie seated, his back to the maid Cuiju, while Cuiju had already undressed, her chest bare.

”Ah, wife!”

Cuiju was also startled. She had inquired clearly earlier; the wife was teaching the young miss how to write, she shouldn’t have been able to come for a while.

But how did she come?

And indeed, Su Yunjin had been teaching Su Yunrui how to write, but looking at the time and thinking of Chen Jie still in the study, she came to tell him to rest more,

never expecting to encounter such a scene.

She was at a loss as to how to proceed.

A maid’s affair with the Old Master was, in ordinary households, at the very least subject to a beating and resale, or even beating to death—after all, there was a contract of sale, death was not questioned.

Even Chen Jie felt a bit awkward, like being caught in an illicit massage by his wife.

Cuiju was panicked, unsure of what her mistress’s temper was.

It took a moment for Su Yunjin to recover, speaking in an even tone, ”Husband, have you finished being massaged?”

Chen Jie said, ”It’s finished.”

”Oh, that’s good, Cuiju, you can go now.”

”Ah, yes, wife.”

Upon hearing the dismissal, Cuiju, like receiving a pardon, hastily scuttled out, while Yin Hongmei frowned slightly, wanting to intercept this shameless wretch.

However, Su Yunjin stopped her.

After Cuiju hurriedly left, Chen Jie felt somewhat embarrassed and took a spoonful of the lotus seed soup from the table.

Su Yunjin, on the other hand, entered the room.

”Hong Mei, you don’t need to serve here, you can leave.”

Su Yunjin dismissed Yin Hongmei.

For a moment, only Chen Jie and Su Yunjin were left in the room, the atmosphere somewhat awkward.

Su Yunjin remained silent, slowly approaching behind Chen Jie, her hands gently massaging his shoulders and saying, ”Tired, aren’t you?”

”Not really.”

”That girl has grown up nicely, do you want to take her in as a concubine?”

Su Yunjin said offhandedly.

”What?”

Chen Jie was taken aback and turned to look at Su Yunjin.

”Why are you looking at me? I’m asking if you want to take that maid as a concubine?”

Su Yunjin asked again.

”It’s not about the wife, I haven’t done anything, why would I take her in as a concubine?”

Chen Jie said helplessly.

Su Yunjin said, ”Husband, you don’t have to worry about me, I’ve long understood that with your current status, it’s not possible to have just one woman. Otherwise, people would laugh if it got out.”

”Look at Old Master Feng Xuan, one principal wife, three concubines.”

”Second Master Zheng Chuan: one principal wife, five concubines.”

”Third Master, Fourth Master, they all have multiple wives and concubines too. As the Fifth Master of White Tiger Hall, how can you have only one wife and no concubines? People would laugh.”

”So if you think that girl is good, just take her in as a concubine.”

”Just be careful with your health; don’t overindulge in pleasures. Ruirui and I are still relying on you, after all!”

Su Yunjin spoke calmly. She had anticipated this day long ago. After men gain power, how many of them have only one wife?

Just as Sister Hua had said, the women outside are like moths, willing to fling themselves desperately. They will use all means to snatch a man.

If you’re mad enough to try to stop them, you won’t succeed.

It’s better to outmaneuver than to bar, knowing your own place in his heart is what’s most important.

Moreover, women of this era don’t think like those in the modern world. The female virtues they recite include guidelines on how to be a woman.
