”Saying this, she clambered onto the horseback and spurred the horse into a frantic gallop.”

Chen Jie, seeing this, took hold of the spear in his hands and pursued Zheng Chuan directly; he was determined to avenge Fourth Brother.

”You all capture these people.”

Upon hearing his command, six Eagle Guards immediately responded affirmatively.

At this moment, the steward shouted, ”Brothers, charge!”

However, he stealthily retreated and bolted for it, deliberately choosing paths where horses couldn’t follow.

The combat onslaught initiated by the Eagle Guards began in a flash.

Meanwhile, Chen Jie and Zheng Chuan kicked off a frenzied chase.

The two riders raced violently, and soon, a nunnery appeared ahead of them. Silence reigned within the nunnery, not a sound to be heard.

Several rooms glowed with the light of oil lamps.

As the two horsemen rapidly drew near, Chen Jie gripped the spear in his hand and hurled it towards Zheng Chuan out front.

With an anguished cry...

The spear embedded itself right before Zheng Chuan’s steed, startling the horse into rearing up with its front hooves.

Nearly sent tumbling from the horseback, Zheng Chuan managed to hang on.

And in that crucial moment, Chen Jie caught up, drawing forth the [Autumn Cicada] dagger he had seized from Little Knife and slashed directly at the back of Zheng Chuan’s neck.

Shocked, Zheng Chuan instantly drew his long saber.

With a clang and a shower of sparks, their weapons clashed in the dark of the night.

The horses passed by each other, and the two men took several steps apart. Chen Jie grabbed the spear stuck in the ground.

He sheathed the dagger in its scabbard and wheeled his horse around.

Zheng Chuan also turned his horse, and their eyes met - the atmosphere charged with palpable tension.

At that moment, a commotion arose from Jixiang Temple beside them; a group of nuns scurried to put on their robes and ran out.

In a room graced by a single Green Lamp Ancient Buddha, a woman beside the lamp turned to her maid and asked, ”What’s that noise?”

”It sounds like hostile people have arrived outside!”

Upon hearing this, the woman stood up; her smooth, long hair cascading over her pale blue nun’s robes. Even in monastic attire, her shapely figure could not be concealed—curvaceous and bewitching amidst mortal beings.

”Madam, you?”

”Let’s go outside and have a look.”

The woman said, preparing to leave.

Upon hearing this, the maid replied, ”The petty rogues are nothing Master Jingxiang can’t handle. There’s no need for you to put yourself in danger, Madam.”

The woman retorted, ”Enough said. With Master Jingxiang here, what danger could there be?”

Then, adding, ”Besides, if I were to be killed by some rogue, it might not be such a bad fate after all.”

”Madam.”

The lady raised her hand.

The maid, feeling helpless, pushed open the door. By now, the nuns had already lit lanterns outside, and some were bringing ladders to climb the walls.

A nun in her fifties stood calmly in the courtyard.

She saw the lady and asked, ”Mrs. Huang, why have you come out?”

The lady replied, ”I’m restless and curious about the disturbance.”

Master Jingxiang said, ”That’s because Madam, you haven’t severed your worldly ties and hence have no connection with Buddhism. What’s the point in practicing as a nun with hair?”

The lady sighed, ”The world is full of suffering. If I cannot find joy in the mortal realm, I’d rather spend my days with the Green Lamp Ancient Buddha than associate with the beasts of this world.”

Master Jingxiang, upon hearing this, didn’t dare to reply.

The maid behind her was also frightened into silence.

Ever since Guild Leader Nan’s temperament drastically changed, Madam had become disillusioned and despondent towards life, feeling pitiful indeed.

Once the unparalleled beauty of Mianshui, the precious daughter of the Huang Family, she was the desire of many. Later, she caught Guild Leader Nan’s eye.

The Huang Family, eager for power and prestige, offered her to Guild Leader Nan.

Thus, the belle joined an elderly husband—a pear tree overshadowing the flowering begonias.

If only that were all there was to life—but alas, Guild Leader Nan practiced the ’Mystic Ice Power’ and damaged his kidney meridian, leaving him less than a whole man.

Unable to consummate his marriage, Guild Leader Nan grew twisted over time!

Frequently in fits of madness, his rage would erupt, accusing his wife of infidelity and often beating her. The scars on her back were still fresh, requiring daily treatment, leaving her sleepless with pain each night.

Such torments were of the utmost extremity in this worldly life.

And Mrs. Huang was not permitted to reside here permanently; as soon as she recovered, it signaled Guild Leader Nan bringing her home again.

And not long after, she would return covered in wounds to recuperate once more at the nunnery!

Every time, Guild Leader Nan would assure that he was cured and wouldn’t succumb to his rage easily, but he never once kept his word.

If one pondered the situation, suffering such repetitive torments, one might also nurse a grudge or even commit some transgression.

”You suspect me of infidelity; I’ll give you infidelity to witness,” one might think.

But Mrs. Huang did not act in this way; instead, she chose to practice spiritual discipline here.

Once, Mrs. Huang even fled to the Huang Residence seeking solace, but all she received from her parents were rebukes: ”Be nicer to Guild Leader Nan; our family’s wealth and status depend on him.”

Even her elder brother had bluntly stated, ”What man doesn’t beat his wife? You just can’t handle being beaten a few times; you’re being overly sensitive.”

Henceforth, Mrs. Huang became reticent, like a walking corpse, no longer fearing life or death.

...

The nuns prepared their defenses, mounting ladders to the top of the walls.

Unexpectedly, Mrs. Huang found a ladder and climbed up as well. Witnessing this scene, Master Jingxiang grew restless.

She quickly advised, ”Madam, with rogues fighting outside, it’s not safe. Please come down quickly.”

Huang Wan’er replied, ”No, I want to watch.”

Master Jingxiang tried to have people escort Mrs. Huang down, but Huang Wan’er fiercely glared at the nun, who didn’t dare to force the issue.

The last time she had forcefully escorted Mrs. Huang away, Mrs. Huang had slashed her own hand.

When Nan Batian learned of it afterward, he slapped Master Jingxiang twice and warned her, ”If my wife gets injured again in your Jixiang Temple, I will flatten it and send all your disciples to the lowliest alleys to be prostitutes!”

Since then, Master Jingxiang had never again dared to force Huang Wan’er to do anything against her will.

That woman is sick; she’s not someone you want to mess with.
