Chapter 231: The Trail Beyond the Den · Nov 04, 2026
Chapter List (352)
Iris Hollow returned to Blackwood just after dawn, slept for less than four hours, and was standing over the southern forest map before Kael finished breakfast.
Kael noticed that immediately.
He entered the manor’s smaller planning room carrying a cup of tea and found Iris already dressed for the road. Her dark traveling clothes still carried dried mud from the previous day’s reconnaissance, though someone had cleaned most of the blood from one sleeve. Merric Hale stood near the wall with fresh equipment, while Jessa Cor checked a leather field pack beside the table. Galahad had arrived as well, and Darius occupied his usual position near the window.
Kael stopped in the doorway. ”How much did you sleep?”
Iris looked at him. ”Enough.”
”That is not a number.”
”It was enough.”
Darius glanced toward Kael. ”Do not waste time. She will not answer differently.”
Kael looked between them. ”Everyone in Blackwood has become very comfortable ignoring me.”
Edwin entered behind him carrying another set of documents. ”That usually means the household is functioning properly, Your Highness.”
Kael sat down.
”Good morning to you too.”
Iris turned the map toward him. She had marked yesterday’s route in charcoal, beginning at Eastmere, crossing the original livestock trail, passing the ashmaw territory, and ending at the old charcoal road where the possible human tracks continued east.
”We start here,” she said, tapping the edge of the ridge. ”Not at the den. We already know where the ashmaws are. There is no reason to approach them again unless the trail forces us back.”
Kael nodded. ”And you are certain the tracks were human?”
”As certain as I can be after nine days of weather.”
”Boots?”
”One person. Right foot dragging occasionally.”
”Injury.”
”Likely.”
Iris moved her finger farther east. ”There are three old charcoal sites along this route. Two collapsed years ago. The third has a stone drying shed beside it. If Meya survived the first day, that is the nearest structure where she could have sheltered.”
Galahad leaned over the map. ”Water?”
”Seasonal stream here.”
”Still running?”
”It should be.”
Darius asked, ”Food?”
Iris shook her head. ”That depends on what she carried and whether she could hunt.”
Kael remembered what Rellis had told him.
Best tracker between Blackwood and the southern marshes.
That increased Meya’s chances.
It did not make them good.
”How long to reach the third site?”
”Three hours if we start from Eastmere.”
Kael looked toward the windows. ”Then you should already be leaving.”
Iris waited.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
”What?”
”You are not asking to come.”
”No.”
Merric looked almost disappointed.
Kael noticed. ”You too?”
Merric straightened. ”I said nothing, Your Highness.”
”Your face did.”
Galahad smiled.
Kael pointed toward all of them. ”I learned the lesson. Iris knows the terrain. This is a search, not a royal inspection.”
Darius’s expression remained perfectly calm. ”Good.”
Kael hated how much satisfaction one word could contain.
He looked toward Iris again. ”Who goes?”
”Myself, Merric, Jessa, and the same two local hunters. I want one healer added.”
”Liora?”
”No.”
Kael raised an eyebrow.
Iris continued, ”She has clinic duty and limited field experience. Healer Tessa is gone. Edwin found a retired battlefield medic living near Hollow Creek.”
Edwin nodded. ”Harrek Doss. Fifty-four. Former auxiliary medic. He has treated hunting injuries for years.”
Kael remembered the name from one of the older settlement records. ”Does he want to go?”
”He already agreed.”
That caught Kael.
”Before we asked?”
Edwin looked at Iris.
Iris answered. ”I asked.”
Kael smiled faintly. ”Right. People can make decisions without me.”
”That appears to be today’s lesson,” Darius said.
Kael ignored him.
Iris gathered the map. ”If Meya is alive, we return with her. If she is dead, we recover her if doing so does not endanger the team. Berren’s body is secondary until we know where Meya’s trail ends.”
Kael nodded.
No speeches.
No unnecessary additions.
”Go.”
The search party left Blackwood twenty minutes later.
Kael watched from the manor’s western balcony until the horses disappeared beyond the lower road. He had expected staying behind to become easier the second time.
It had not.
The difference was that now he understood discomfort did not automatically mean he should act.
Darius joined him a few minutes later.
”You are still watching.”
”Yes.”
”You cannot see them.”
”I know.”
”Then why are you standing here?”
Kael rested his forearms against the stone railing. ”Because sitting in the study would not make them return faster either.”
Darius accepted that.
Below them, Blackwood was beginning another workday. Wagons rolled toward the market road. Laborers crossed toward the Guild construction site. Smoke rose from the smithies, and a line of farmers waited near one of the agricultural offices with sacks of seed samples and written requests.
Kael watched them for a while.
”The territory changed while we were gone.”
”Yes.”
”I noticed yesterday.”
”I assumed.”
”No.” Kael shook his head. ”I mean it changed without us.”
Darius looked toward him.
Kael continued. ”The Guild construction advanced. Edwin recruited people. Tessa passed through and treated patients. Galahad interviewed brokers. Iris came home, read the situation, and started a reconnaissance before I even unpacked.”
”That is what competent people do.”
”I know.”
”Then what is bothering you?”
Kael considered the question.
”Nothing.”
Darius waited.
Kael sighed. ”Maybe that is what bothers me.”
The older knight almost smiled.
Kael looked toward him. ”That sounded worse out loud.”
”It sounded accurate.”
Kael turned back toward Blackwood.
”When I started, everything depended on a handful of people. Edwin. Lily. Bram. Me. If one person stopped working, something stalled.”
”And now?”
”Now I can leave for Aurelia and come back to discover problems were solved without asking me.”
”That is called governing.”
Kael glanced toward him.
”I thought governing was meetings.”
”That is the punishment for governing.”
Kael laughed.
Darius continued. ”A House that functions only when its lord is present is not strong. It is dependent.”
Cassian’s word.
Dependency.
Kael nodded slowly.
Perhaps Blackwood’s growth would eventually force him to give up something he had grown accustomed to.
Being necessary everywhere.
He did not like that realization.
Which probably meant it was useful.
By midmorning, Kael had returned to the study.
He managed nearly an hour of agricultural reports before Galahad arrived carrying three contracts.
Kael looked up.
”No.”
Galahad stopped. ”I haven’t said anything.”
”You are carrying paperwork.”
”So are you.”
”That is different.”
”Why?”
”Because mine was already here.”
Galahad sat without invitation and spread the documents across the table.
”These are old contracts Harven Toll arranged during the past six months.”
Kael’s attention sharpened despite himself.
”I thought we were waiting until after Meya was found.”
”We are.”
”Then why are these here?”
”Because I wanted to know whether the Eastmere contract was unusual.”
Kael leaned forward.
”And?”
”Not entirely.”
That was worse than unusual.
Galahad pushed the first contract toward him. A merchant caravan had hired two independent guards for a three-day route through wooded territory. The original document listed one payment. A handwritten note later added a bonus for recovering bandit weapons if fighting occurred.
The second involved a farmer hiring hunters to remove burrowing creatures from irrigation banks. A separate buyer had offered payment for intact venom sacs.
The third concerned an old ruin where a local landowner wanted trespassers removed. A private collector had separately paid workers to retrieve carved stone fragments.
Kael looked up.
”Same buyer?”
”No.”
”Same broker.”
”Yes.”
Kael read the documents again.
”Is this illegal?”
”Not automatically.”
”Then what is it?”
”A habit.”
Galahad tapped the papers.
”Toll finds people already going somewhere and adds another source of money. Sometimes everybody knows. Sometimes the second arrangement is informal.”
Kael frowned. ”Which means the original client may not know the job changed.”
”Exactly.”
”Does Toll receive part of the second payment?”
”Usually.”
There it was.
Incentive again.
Kael sat back.
”So he benefits when a simple job becomes a more profitable one.”
”Yes.”
”That still does not prove he knew ashmaws were there.”
”No.”
Kael looked at him.
”You keep refusing to give me convenient answers.”
”That is why you hired me.”
”I don’t remember hiring you specifically for irritation.”
”It was included.”
Kael smiled despite himself.
He returned to the Eastmere contract. ”What did Toll write?”
”Livestock predator. Probable ridgeback boar. Three-day clearing assignment.”
”Where did probable come from?”
”The farmer’s description.”
”Did Toll inspect the site?”
”No.”
”Did anyone?”
”Not before the hunters arrived.”
Kael ran one finger down the page.
That was another weakness.
The broker had converted a farmer’s guess into contract language.
Not necessarily dishonestly.
But once written, the guess looked more official than it actually was.
Kael reached for a blank sheet.
Galahad immediately said, ”No.”
Kael stopped.
”What?”
”You’re about to write a rule.”
”I am taking notes.”
”You picked up the policy paper.”
Kael looked down.
He had.
Kael put it back.
”Fine.”
Galahad smiled.
Kael took ordinary paper instead. ”The Guild needs a way to distinguish confirmed information from client assumptions.”
”That is worth recording.”
Kael wrote:
Confirmed. Reported. Suspected. Unknown.
He stared at the four words.
Simple.
Useful.
Potentially dangerous if treated as perfect.
”What happens when confirmed information is wrong?”
Galahad nodded approvingly. ”Good question.”
Kael frowned. ”You could answer.”
”I could.”
”But?”
”You’re learning.”
Kael hated everyone again.
Near noon, Elias and Marcus arrived with a man Kael had not met before.
The newcomer was thin, middle-aged, and carried enough books beneath one arm that Kael immediately assumed he was dangerous in a different way.
Elias introduced him.
”Master Halric Senn. Imperial legal scholar attached to the western circuit.”
Kael stood.
”Edwin found you quickly.”
Halric bowed. ”Your steward sent a rider before sunrise.”
Of course he had.
Kael gestured toward the table.
”This is about the knightly oath.”
”Yes, Your Highness.”
Darius entered several minutes later, having apparently decided the conversation deserved supervision.
Halric opened the Church documents and began explaining the clauses Elias and Marcus had questioned.
The first concerned lawful command.
”A knight is expected to obey legitimate authority,” Halric said, ”but legitimacy of authority and legality of an order are not identical questions. A superior may possess lawful command and still issue an unlawful instruction.”
Marcus frowned. ”And the knight must decide in the moment?”
”Sometimes.”
”That seems unreasonable.”
”It often is.”
Kael liked Halric immediately.
Elias leaned forward. ”What protects the knight if he refuses correctly?”
”The law.”
”And if people disagree about whether he was correct?”
”The courts.”
Elias looked toward Kael. ”That does not sound protective.”
Halric smiled faintly. ”Law usually feels more impressive from a distance.”
Darius almost smiled.
Kael asked, ”Has the Church ever refused consecration because someone admitted they could not accept that obligation?”
”Yes.”
”How often?”
”Rarely.”
”Why?”
”Most candidates either accept the principle or never think deeply enough to challenge it.”
The room quieted.
Marcus looked down at the oath.
”That is not reassuring.”
”No,” Halric agreed.
He continued through the responsibilities attached to knightly authority. Knights were not merely skilled fighters with titles. The title could grant social privilege, command authority in specific circumstances, standing in military and civil proceedings, and legal recognition beyond what ordinary soldiers possessed.
That meant misconduct carried additional weight.
”A knight striking a man in anger is not treated exactly like a farmer striking another farmer,” Halric explained.
Elias frowned. ”Because the knight is more dangerous?”
”Partly. Also because the title represents public trust.”
Kael looked toward the Church document.
Public trust.
The phrase connected unexpectedly to Galahad’s Guild principle.
A badge would eventually mean something similar.
Not the same authority.
But trust.
A person seeing the badge should be able to assume certain things about whoever wore it.
Capability.
Accountability.
Identity.
Perhaps conduct.
Kael caught himself.
Different institution.
Different purpose.
He should not force the comparison too quickly.
Augustus’s question appeared again.
What should never be standardized?
Maybe trust itself could not be standardized.
Only the promises surrounding it.
Halric continued. ”The Church’s role is deliberately limited. It records the oath, preserves the ceremonial legitimacy of the title, and may investigate whether a knight has dishonored that title. It does not command Imperial armies.”
Marcus nodded. ”And the Emperor can still strip knighthood.”
”Yes.”
”The Church?”
”Can refuse or suspend ecclesiastical recognition under certain circumstances, but that does not automatically erase an Imperial commission.”
Kael leaned forward.
”So theoretically, the Crown and Church could disagree about whether someone should still be called Sir.”
Halric paused.
”Yes.”
There it was.
Politics.
Not dramatic.
Not necessarily hostile.
But real.
Two institutions could recognize different parts of the same status.
Kael smiled faintly.
Darius noticed.
”What?”
”Nothing.”
”You found a complication interesting.”
”I did.”
”Do not create one.”
”I wasn’t planning to.”
”Good.”
Halric looked between them. ”Does this happen often?”
Elias answered first.
”Yes.”
Kael ignored him.
The discussion lasted another hour. By the end, Elias and Marcus still had questions, but neither looked uncertain about taking the oath itself.
That mattered more.
Kael closed the final book.
”Twelve days.”
Marcus nodded.
Elias looked toward the Church seal. ”Assuming the Archdeacon does not find some reason to delay us.”
Kael looked toward Darius. ”Should they be worried?”
”No.”
”That sounded too easy.”
”They passed Imperial review. Unless either man has concealed serious misconduct, there is little reason for concern.”
Elias looked toward Marcus.
Marcus looked back.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
”Why did both of you do that?”
”Nothing,” Marcus said.
Darius’s expression changed slightly.
Kael sat straighter.
”What?”
Elias sighed. ”There was an incident.”
Kael stared at him.
Marcus immediately said, ”It is not serious.”
”That is never a reassuring opening.”
Elias rubbed one hand across his face. ”Before Blackwood. Three years ago.”
Kael waited.
”I broke a local lord’s son’s nose.”
Kael blinked.
Marcus looked toward the ceiling.
Darius closed his eyes briefly.
Kael asked, ”Why?”
”He struck a stable boy.”
Kael paused.
”And?”
”I told him to stop.”
”And?”
”He didn’t.”
”And?”
”I broke his nose.”
Kael tried not to smile.
Failed slightly.
Darius noticed.
”This is not amusing.”
”It is a little amusing.”
”No.”
Kael looked toward Elias. ”Were you charged?”
”No. His father wanted charges. The local captain refused after witnesses confirmed what happened.”
Halric looked interested.
”Any formal complaint recorded?”
”I don’t know.”
Kael looked toward Marcus.
”Your turn.”
Marcus sighed.
”Mine is less interesting.”
”That depends.”
”I deserted a post.”
The room went silent.
Kael’s amusement vanished.
Marcus continued before anyone interrupted. ”For eleven minutes.”
Kael stared.
”That requires explanation.”
”My unit was guarding a supply bridge during flooding. A wagon overturned upstream. Two children were trapped.”
”You left the assigned position.”
”Yes.”
”Without permission.”
”The sergeant was unconscious after being struck by debris.”
”What happened?”
”I pulled the children out.”
Kael looked toward Darius.
Darius’s expression remained serious.
”And the bridge?”
”Never attacked. No enemy nearby. I returned.”
”Punishment?”
”Two weeks confined duty and loss of pay.”
Halric nodded slowly. ”That will likely exist in the record.”
Marcus looked toward him. ”Could it delay consecration?”
”Possibly long enough for the Archdeacon to review the circumstances.”
Kael watched Marcus.
”Do you regret leaving?”
Marcus thought.
”No.”
”Would you do it again?”
Another pause.
”If the situation were the same.”
Kael nodded.
Darius looked toward him.
Kael met his gaze.
”What?”
”Do not tell him that automatically makes the decision correct.”
”I wasn’t going to.”
Darius waited.
Kael sighed. ”I was thinking it.”
”That is the problem.”
Halric looked increasingly entertained.
Kael turned toward Marcus. ”Darius is right. Saving the children does not automatically make abandoning the post correct.”
Marcus nodded.
”But neither does the order automatically make staying correct.”
Darius accepted that.
That was probably as close to agreement as Kael would get.
The Church examiner suddenly seemed more interesting.
Not because Kael expected conflict.
Because Elias and Marcus’s old decisions sat directly inside the oath they were preparing to take.
Force.
Authority.
Lawful duty.
Judgment.
Maybe the ceremony would mean more because of that.
The search party had still not returned by late afternoon.
Kael noticed every hour.
Nobody commented after Edwin’s earlier lesson.
That might have been worse.
He spent the next several hours moving between the manor and the Guild construction site, reviewing costs with Galahad and inspecting the second-floor rooms. They discussed storage, records, training schedules, and whether healers registered through the Guild should be evaluated by other healers rather than combat officers.
Kael’s answer came quickly.
”Yes.”
Galahad looked surprised.
”What?”
”No argument?”
”Why would a swordsman determine whether a healer is qualified?”
”Good.”
Kael stared.
”You are all enjoying this too much.”
Galahad laughed.
The sun had already begun lowering when bells sounded from the southern gate.
Not alarm bells.
Return signal.
Kael left the Guild hall before Galahad could say anything.
He did not run.
Technically.
By the time he reached the road near the manor, several Black Dragon soldiers were already moving toward the gate with a wagon.
Iris entered first.
She was walking her horse.
Merric followed.
Then Jessa.
The local hunters.
Harrek Doss.
And between them, supported across a makeshift saddle rig, was someone Kael had not seen before.
A woman.
Alive.
Kael stopped.
Meya Hart looked barely conscious.
Her face was pale beneath dirt and dried blood, one leg bound tightly from ankle to thigh. Her left arm rested in a sling fashioned from torn cloth, and someone had wrapped a blanket around her shoulders despite the warm evening.
But she was upright.
Barely.
Iris saw Kael.
”We found her.”
Kael exhaled.
Only then did he realize he had been holding his breath.
”Clinic.”
Harrek nodded. ”Immediately.”
Kael moved aside as the wagon came forward.
No questions yet.
No crowd.
Blackwood’s guards cleared the road while Liora and the second clinic apprentice hurried toward them with a stretcher.
Meya stirred when they lifted her.
Her eyes opened.
Unfocused at first.
Then they found Iris.
”Berren?”
Iris’s expression changed.
Meya understood before anyone answered.
She closed her eyes.
Not dramatically.
Just tired.
Very tired.
They carried her inside.
Kael remained outside with Iris.
”You found her where?”
”Third charcoal site.”
”The drying shed?”
”No. Beneath it.”
Kael frowned.
”There is an old storage cellar. Roof partly collapsed. She crawled inside after following the stream.”
”How long had she been there?”
”Most of the time.”
”Food?”
”Two dried rations. After that, roots, insects, whatever she could reach without moving far.”
Kael’s stomach tightened.
”Water?”
”Stream.”
”How bad?”
Iris looked toward the clinic door.
”Bad enough that another two days might have changed the answer.”
Kael nodded slowly.
”And Berren?”
”We recovered him.”
A second wagon approached the gate.
Covered.
Kael’s expression changed.
”Family?”
”Edwin is locating them.”
Kael looked toward the covered wagon.
Yesterday, Berren had been a name.
Today, he was coming home because people had gone back.
That mattered.
Even if he did not.
Iris continued. ”There’s something else.”
Kael looked toward her.
”Meya wasn’t alone at the charcoal site.”
His attention sharpened.
”Who?”
”No one when we arrived.”
”What did you find?”
”Boot tracks.”
”How many?”
”Two people.”
”Recent?”
”More recent than Meya’s.”
Kael frowned.
”Did they help her?”
”No.”
”Then what were they doing?”
Iris reached into her coat and removed a small piece of wrapped cloth.
She unfolded it.
Inside lay a broken glass vial stained dark red along the interior.
Galahad arrived behind Kael.
He looked at the vial.
”What is that?”
Iris handed it to him.
”Monster preservative.”
Galahad’s expression changed.
Kael looked between them.
”For harvested parts?”
”Yes.”
Iris nodded toward the south.
”The tracks came from the direction of the ashmaw ridge, reached the charcoal road, and turned west.”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
”Someone went to the den after the hunters disappeared.”
”Probably.”
”Did they know Meya was there?”
”I don’t know.”
”Could they have missed her?”
”Yes.”
Kael looked at the vial again.
The private buyer.
Maybe.
Or someone else harvesting from the same area.
He refused to jump ahead.
”What does this prove?”
Iris answered exactly as he hoped.
”Only that someone carrying preservation supplies passed through after the attack.”
Galahad nodded.
Kael looked toward him.
”Harven Toll.”
”We talk to him.”
”Not arrest?”
”We have no evidence he committed a crime.”
Kael nodded.
Good.
That was the right answer.
He looked toward the clinic.
”When Meya can speak, we ask what she remembers.”
”Not tonight,” Iris said.
”Agreed.”
Kael turned toward Galahad.
”And Toll?”
”Tomorrow morning.”
Kael considered.
”No.”
Galahad raised an eyebrow.
”Why?”
”Send someone tonight.”
”To arrest him?”
”To tell him we want to speak tomorrow and that leaving Blackwood before then will make the conversation considerably less pleasant.”
Galahad smiled faintly.
”That sounds almost like a threat.”
”It is information about consequences.”
Darius’s voice came from behind them.
”That is a threat.”
Kael looked back.
”When did you get here?”
”Before you reinvented the word threat.”
Kael sighed.
Darius looked toward the vial, and Iris explained.
He listened without interruption.
When she finished, his expression did not change.
”No assumptions.”
Kael nodded.
”I know.”
”Good.”
”But somebody harvested from that area after the hunters were attacked.”
”Yes.”
”And if the private buyer knew what lived there before Toll sent Rellis’s party—”
”Then you investigate it.”
Kael stopped.
Darius continued. ”Not imagine it.”
Kael smiled faintly.
”I’m learning.”
”Yes.”
They stood quietly while Blackwood received one survivor and one body.
People began gathering farther down the road, but Edwin quickly moved to control the situation. Berren would not be displayed. Meya would not become tonight’s entertainment. Rellis would be told privately that one companion had returned alive and the other had not.
Kael watched the covered wagon turn toward a quieter entrance.
The Guild was still closed.
No badges existed.
No formal missing-party procedure had been approved.
Yet the principle had already become real.
Someone had failed to come home.
Blackwood had noticed.
Blackwood had gone back.
They had not saved everyone.
But one woman was alive because they had refused to let uncertainty become an excuse to do nothing.
Kael looked toward the unfinished Guild headquarters in the distance.
He understood something now that no planning document could have taught him.
A badge could never promise safety.
If he allowed people to believe otherwise, the Guild would eventually kill someone with that lie.
What it could promise was narrower.
And perhaps stronger.
If you accepted work through Blackwood, someone would know where you had gone.
Someone would know when you were late.
And if you disappeared, your absence would belong to someone before it was forgotten by everyone.
Kael looked toward Galahad.
”Do not write the rule tonight.”
Galahad nodded.
”Why?”
Kael watched the clinic door close behind Meya.
”Because tomorrow we ask the person who needed it.”
