Blackie tilted its head as it looked at the person making the request.
Penia Crysinne.
Her expression was rather complicated.
There was a little guilt and embarrassment.
A little hope and a strange desire.
And several other emotions mixed in as well.
Of course, Blackie couldn’t possibly understand such a complicated state of mind.
After all, the only things occupying its thoughts were the beef in her hand and the sweet-potato regime that had begun one day after the journey started.
Therefore—
Nod!
Without much thought, Blackie nodded.
It immediately grabbed the beef from Penia’s hand and began devouring it.
“You really eat well, don’t you...?”
Penia was briefly amazed.
The speed at which Blackie consumed the food was far too fast for a tiny cat.
Before long, Blackie finished every last bite of the beef.
Then it happily swayed its head from side to side.
“Enjoyed it?”
[Meow!]
“Then... I’m counting on you?”
Penia carefully spoke.
Blackie nodded once.
Naturally, it had never transformed into Alon before.
There had never been a reason to.
And nobody had ever ordered it to.
But for Blackie, temporarily turning into its master was an incredibly simple task.
Wooooong—!
Blackie instantly wrapped itself in black shadows.
Its body began swelling larger and larger.
Soon, it became slime-like in form.
Then, the previously shapeless mass slowly began taking shape.
And what appeared was—
Alon.
“Gasp.”
An involuntary breath escaped Penia.
Of course, she knew perfectly well that the being before her was Blackie.
She had practically bribed it with her precious stockpiled beef to make this happen.
And yet—
It looks real?
Blackie’s transformation was far more accurate than she had ever imagined.
The resemblance was almost unsettling.
Covering her slightly open mouth, Penia carefully asked:
“Can you speak?”
[Meow?]
“Let’s just keep your mouth shut.”
Seeing Blackie tilt its head while wearing Alon’s appearance was strangely adorable.
But the voice was still unmistakably Blackie’s.
So Penia immediately shut down that possibility.
“......”
She cautiously stepped closer.
Then she began examining Blackie, now transformed into Alon.
Before long, she started touching various parts of his clothes.
“Mm... Ah... Oh...”
Small exclamations escaped her lips as she poked at Alon’s collar and coat.
How much time passed?
After spending quite a while touching Alon(?)—
Penia awkwardly cleared her throat.
“Hm-hm. You see, I was actually thinking of giving Lord Alon some clothes as a gift.”
[?]
“And that’s why I asked you to transform.”
Blackie offered no response.
Communication wasn’t impossible.
But understanding why she was suddenly saying all these things was entirely beyond it.
More importantly, having accepted Alon as its master, Blackie had inherited some of his tendencies.
Specifically—
It generally complied with requests from its clients.
“Um... Would it be okay if I hugged you?”
And thus the conversation reached its conclusion.
Without suspicion, Blackie nodded.
“Good. This is strictly for taking measurements for the clothes, after all—”
Just as Penia began spreading her arms—
“Hm. So mages need to hug people in order to measure them for clothing gifts?”
”!?!?”
A voice interrupted.
Penia swallowed the scream trying to escape.
Like someone caught doing something they absolutely shouldn’t be doing, she slowly turned her head.
“That’s fascinating.”
“Uh—”
Rine stood there.
Perhaps because of the blue moonlight, she somehow looked even colder than usual.
“N-no, this isn’t—”
The moment she spotted Rine, Penia desperately began searching for excuses.
But Rine merely looked at her with a somewhat chilly expression.
Then she approached Blackie, who was still transformed into Alon.
“W-well, you see, this is just for giving him clothes—”
“If it’s for measurements, wouldn’t magic be sufficient?”
“N-no, well, because this is technically a duplicate, so if something ended up being slightly different—”
“You aren’t seriously saying that, are you? And no matter how interested you are in Godfather, this sort of approach is—”
Click.
Rine clicked her tongue.
Then, while looking at Blackie in Alon’s form—
“This sort of approach is—”
She paused.
Still looking at Blackie.
“This sort of approach...”
As she spoke, Rine casually reached out and grabbed the front edge of Alon’s coat.
Rub rub.
She quietly played with the coat.
“The reproduction is incredible, isn’t it?”
Penia immediately saw through her thoughts.
Without answering, Rine continued rubbing the fabric several more times.
Of course, Penia could easily guess what she was thinking.
She herself had been shocked by Blackie’s accuracy.
And after that, a natural question had arisen.
What would Blackie’s skin feel like?
Thus, while subtly watching Rine’s reaction—
“Hm-hm.”
Rine, who had been rubbing the collar moments ago, cleared her throat.
“It certainly feels somewhat different from the real thing.”
“If someone wanted to give clothing as a gift, unavoidable contact would naturally occur.”
She spoke calmly.
And because Penia was smart, she immediately understood why Rine was saying that.
“Right?”
She nodded.
“Yes. As a matter of fact, I’ve also considered giving Godfather custom-made clothing.”
That brief exchange was enough.
Neither woman said it aloud.
But an alliance had been formed.
[······Meow?]
Naturally, Blackie still had absolutely no idea what was happening.
***
Several more days passed.
Alon’s group was now flying near the edge of the wastelands.
“Lord Alon.”
Suddenly, Evan spoke.
“What is it?”
“Something feels strange.”
”Suddenly?”
Alon looked puzzled.
But Evan continued.
“Yes. Penia and Rine.”
“What about them?”
“No, seriously. Haven’t you noticed anything strange?”
“Both of them seem incredibly happy lately.”
.....?
Alon turned toward them.
Sure enough, Penia and Rine both looked to be in remarkably good moods.
The only slightly concerning thing was that, upon closer inspection, both seemed to have faint dark circles under their eyes.
That alone hardly seems strange.
Alon answered accordingly.
But Evan looked at him as though he was missing the point.
“You really think so?”
“I do. Is there something else?”
“Of course there is.”
“What?”
“Those two have been eating nothing but sweet potatoes lately, and they’re still happy.”
“Wait. Are sweet potatoes really that serious?”
“That’s not all. The other day we ate meat instead of sweet potatoes, and they seemed to be in worse moods the next day.”
“No, my point is that enjoying sweet potatoes isn’t exactly strange.”
“Of course it is. We’ve been eating them every day.”
Certainly, Alon ate a lot of sweet potatoes.
As a result, the group’s meals often ended up revolving around them as well.
But even so, he found it somewhat surprising that anyone would dislike them that much.
Sweet potatoes were delicious.
And as far as he knew, nutritionally balanced as well.
Alon felt unjustly accused.
Yet—
Objectively speaking, it was also true that whenever the group ate meat instead of sweet potatoes, Penia and Rine genuinely seemed to be in worse moods afterward.
What is that about?
While Alon was wondering—
“Ah, Lord Alon. We’re approaching the border. What should we do?”
.......
Evan’s question immediately shifted his attention elsewhere.
Technically, they could simply fly over the border.
But Alon knew better than to treat another nation’s territory like his own backyard.
“We’ll go down.”
At Alon’s answer—
He looked ahead.
And then—
”!”
A look of surprise appeared on his face.
Not because there was something unusual in the sky.
All that could be seen was the blue sky and the distant border.
But that was only outwardly.
To Alon’s eyes, something extraordinary was visible.
”That is—”
A gigantic curtain stretched across the border.
At first glance, it did not appear threatening.
If anything, it looked far too thin and harmless.
The sort of thing that made one wonder whether it could truly stop divine-bloods.
“So that’s what they were talking about.”
“Mm—”
Penia and Rine had clearly noticed it as well.
Each gave their own impressions.
[We’re descending~!]
As the barrier drew closer, Basiliora gradually descended toward the ground.
Before long, the group landed completely.
The first thing they did was examine the faintly visible barrier.
“Mm. This is fascinating.”
At Penia’s mutter, Alon found himself agreeing.
She was right.
The barrier truly was fascinating.
Just as he had suspected earlier, it didn’t appear to be something designed specifically to block intruders.
If he had to describe it—
It looked more like a boundary that separated inside from outside, visible only to mages.
Beyond that, there seemed to be no difference whatsoever.
How exactly is this supposed to stop divine-bloods?
As Alon stared at the barrier—
A strange sense of familiarity suddenly struck him.
A feeling that he had seen this power somewhere before.
“Hmm.”
But they couldn’t stand there observing it forever.
And once they crossed the border, there was someone he could ask directly.
“Let’s move for now.”
“Yes.”
Alon immediately headed across the border.
Not long afterward, they reached the checkpoint.
And there—
“Hmm?”
Alon encountered someone completely unexpected.
Namely—
“......Deus?”
“Lord Alon......?”
Deus.
More specifically—
Deus Mikalian.
Standing alone.
Having absolutely demolished what looked to be several hundred border guards.
What in the world is happening here............?
Alon’s thoughts immediately descended into chaos.
