“Use Blackie?”
“That’s right.”
At Alon’s confused reaction, Lainisius nodded and immediately began explaining.
“Do you remember what I told you before?”
“What?”
“That the powers of Spirit Dragons and Shadow Dragons tend to follow their user.”
“I remember, but... why bring that up now?”
“To put it simply, that’s precisely why Blackie can be used.”
“······Because of that?”
Lainisius nodded and looked at Blackie.
“First, let me tell you something. Strictly speaking, Blackie’s ability is actually your ability.”
“......My ability?”
“Yes. The ability to absorb the powers of divine-bloods. Though it seems the Shadow Dragon exercises its own will when using it.”
“Then you’re saying the absorption of divine-blood abilities wasn’t the Shadow Dragon’s power, but mine?”
“Yes. But that’s not particularly surprising. Weren’t you already suspecting something similar?”
At that question, Alon unconsciously fell silent.
The statement was certainly true.
Alon had already suspected that Blackie’s abilities might somehow be connected to himself.
Even if he couldn’t use them exactly the way Blackie did, every time he granted abilities to divine-bloods, the corresponding abilities vanished from him at the same moment.
On top of that, abilities had occasionally appeared even when Alon himself hadn’t absorbed anything.
If Blackie had secretly absorbed them on his behalf, everything made sense.
“I thought we were sharing abilities rather than them being solely mine.”
“That’s not strange. Whether it’s a Shadow Dragon or a Spirit Dragon, forming a contract is practically the same as linking souls.”
Lainisius added that sharing abilities wasn’t unusual at all.
Then Alon asked:
“But how does Blackie sharing abilities with me relate to automatically distributing blessings?”
[Meow.]
As Alon asked the question, Blackie tilted its head in confusion as well.
Looking at both of them, Lainisius said:
“There is a complicated explanation and a simple explanation. Which would you like?”
“......How complicated is the complicated one?”
“About three days.”
“......What?”
“I estimate it would take three days and five hours to explain properly. There are many things I’d need to start from the beginning.”
“Let’s go with the simple version.”
Alon answered without hesitation.
Lainisius immediately continued.
“You seem to have used it several times already, but Blackie can perform calculations on your behalf. Naturally, however, that’s not the limit of its capabilities.”
“Not the limit?”
“Correct. Assuming it receives sufficient mana, the current Blackie can essentially imitate you almost perfectly. Well, not perfectly. But perhaps around fifty percent.”
“Fifty percent of me?”
“Yes. In terms of appearance, it would probably be nearly one hundred percent.”
“That’s possible?”
Alon stared at Blackie in surprise.
[Meow?]
Blackie simply tilted its head at him.
“Yes, it’s possible. If you gave the command, it could certainly do it.”
Lainisius continued.
“But the important point is that even if you’re nowhere near Blackie, as long as it receives a steady supply of mana, it can continue assisting with calculations exactly as you desire. And that’s not all.”
“?”
“Because Blackie is connected to you, it can freely monitor both the divine power flowing into you and the divine power flowing out.”
At those words, Alon finally understood where Lainisius was going with this.
“......So what you’re saying is that you want Blackie to handle the automation?”
“Exactly. Though it won’t be perfect. My method only works within the range of what Blackie can perceive.”
“......What does that mean?”
“It can detect divine power entering and leaving, but it still needs to directly verify who that divine power came from if you’re going to return blessings to them.”
At Lainisius’s explanation, Alon unconsciously let out a small exclamation.
Then he looked at Blackie.
[Meow?]
Receiving Alon’s gaze, Blackie tilted its head in the opposite direction this time.
After watching Blackie for a while, Alon finally spoke.
“I’ve heard your explanation. If things work the way you described, then it seems possible to achieve what I wanted, even if it isn’t perfect.”
“Exactly. I’d say we’re already halfway there.”
Lainisius nodded.
But after looking at him for a moment, Alon said:
“But I won’t proceed with this plan.”
“Why?”
Lainisius calmly asked.
Alon picked up Blackie and placed it back into his chest pocket.
“I appreciate you finding an efficient solution, but I have no intention of turning Blackie into a machine.”
The proposal Lainisius had offered was certainly good.
Alon was genuinely grateful.
After all, Lainisius was trying to help him.
But regardless of that, Alon had no intention of reducing Blackie to a machine that existed only to work.
Because if one followed Lainisius’s proposal to its conclusion, Blackie would be little different from a component in a machine.
.....
And beyond that, Alon still remembered what it felt like to be worked to the absolute limit at a small company in the distant past.
“Sorry.”
Alon apologized briefly.
At that, Lainisius stroked his chin.
“No, there’s no need to apologize. From the Shadow Dragon’s perspective, the task itself could certainly become burdensome, even with sufficient mana supplied. After all, a Shadow Dragon is still a mental entity.”
“Thank you for understanding.”
“I’ll think of another method.”
Lainisius nodded.
It seemed the discussion was over.
But—
[Meow-!]
Blackie, who had just been placed back into Alon’s pocket, suddenly jumped out again.
“?”
Alon looked at it in confusion.
Blackie tapped Alon’s hand repeatedly.
“...............Do you want mana?”
[Meow?]
Understanding immediately, Alon supplied mana.
And then—
Pop!
“?”
“?”
At the same moment, Blackie’s body split into two.
“...Huh?”
Alon stared blankly at the two Blackies.
But he quickly realized which one was the real Blackie.
One of them was moving around normally.
The other simply stared blankly into space.
“......What is this?”
As Alon stared in bewilderment at the sudden situation—
“Oho~”
Lainisius let out a peculiar sound of admiration, as though he had realized something.
“It appears to have separated itself.”
“Separated?”
“Yes. Though it doesn’t seem like it split its power in half. It feels more like it created something.”
“......Created?”
“Yes. A half that possesses enough sensing and computational ability to function as long as it receives mana.”
After saying that, Lainisius looked at Blackie in amazement.
“It seems this is its answer to what you said.”
“My answer?”
“Yes. You said you wouldn’t use a Shadow Dragon like a machine. It appears to be telling you to use this instead.”
Muttering to himself about whether a Shadow Dragon could really become this intelligent, Lainisius watched.
Alon turned toward Blackie.
[Meow-!]
Blackie cried out proudly, lifting its face high as though saying:
’Did I do well?’
“......Thank you, Blackie.”
[Meow!]
At Alon’s gratitude, Blackie chirped once before climbing back into his chest pocket.
“The Shadow Dragon has gone this far for you.”
“So what will you do?”
At Lainisius’s question—
“I’ll try it.”
Alon answered.
Immediately afterward, during the brief span of a single day, Alon managed to learn several things about Blackie’s duplicate.
First, the duplicate had been created using one of the divine-blood abilities Blackie had recently acquired.
Second, the duplicate possessed sufficient computational and detection capabilities.
And third, as long as the duplicate existed, Blackie’s consciousness could naturally move back and forth between the original body and the duplicate.
There were many more experiments afterward.
But delaying the trip to the Empire was not an option.
“I’ll be off.”
“Very well. By the time you return, the research should be complete, so don’t worry. The experiments should be mostly finished by then.”
“And for those experiments...”
“Contact Sili. She’ll likely be able to help.”
After saying that, Alon climbed onto Basiliora.
“Lord Alon.”
“Go ahead.”
“It seems we won’t need to stop by Teria after all.”
“So they still haven’t returned.”
“Yes.”
Evan nodded.
At that answer, Alon briefly considered visiting the Mage Tower before speaking.
“Evan, how long do you think it will take to reach the Empire?”
“Hmm... If we travel diligently, probably somewhere between one and two months. That’s only a rough estimate, of course.”
“One to two months.”
For a moment, Alon felt satisfied by a speed that would have been unimaginable when traveling by carriage.
.....The Mage Tower can wait until I return.
Having reached that conclusion—
“Let’s head to the Empire.”
To meet the Empire’s Guardian Dragon.
No—
To meet Arculainisis.
’And to verify what Wanderer told me.’
With that thought, Alon rose into the sky.
***
That night.
Within the castle of the Palantio Kingdom—
[Hmm—so if I summarize this correctly, does that mean people will now be able to receive Lord Alon’s blessings simply by offering faith?]
“Yes.”
Lainisius, having completed preparations for the experiment, was contacting Sili exactly as Alon had instructed.
[Do you really think that’s possible...?]
“What part?”
[The part where simply praying in the Divine Land would allow people to receive blessings.]
At Sili’s question, Lainisius thought briefly before answering.
“There is a very high probability that it won’t fail.”
Lainisius’s answer.
At that, Sili—
[Hmm~ Hmm~ Mmm~]
—closed her eyes and seemed to think for a moment.
Then—
[Wonderful.]
A smile spread across her face.
“Thank you.”
Lainisius expressed his gratitude.
But—
[Oh my, there’s no need to thank me. If anything, I’m the one who should be grateful.]
“......Really?”
[Yes. If what you’ve said is true—Then I’ll finally be able to accomplish something I’ve been wanting to do.]
“......Something you’ve wanted to do?”
[Well~ It’s nothing particularly special.]
After saying that, Sili continued.
[Then please come to the Divine Land as quickly as possible.]
“......I’ll head there as soon as day breaks.”
[Understood.]
Soon afterward, the communication orb shut off.
As Lainisius stared at the darkened orb, he slowly stroked his chin.
—Because he felt as though he had seen someone with that exact sort of demeanor somewhere before.
He pondered for a while.
Then—
“Ah.”
A small realization escaped him.
He had finally remembered where he had seen eyes like hers before.
The eyes of a fanatic.
While Lainisius was thinking that—
In the Divine Land.
“Mmm~ This is wonderful news.”
Smiling brightly, clearly in an excellent mood, Sili turned her gaze away from the dark night sky.
Her eyes landed upon the worshippers gathered there.
Countless believers offering prayers to the great Sage God she served.
Among them was a young-looking female mercenary praying with utmost sincerity.
And a male mercenary whose expression was somewhat subtle, yet also filled with strange anticipation.
Watching them, Sili softly murmured:
“Who shall I begin with this time?”
The beginning of sainthood, after all.
Her violet eyes glowed faintly.
