Chapter 136: Chapter 136: What Our Family Will Look Like

The walls of Dr. Evans’ office were painted a soft, meaningless blue. Chloe sat in the uncomfortable guest chair. She traced the edges of the glossy informational packet in her lap. The paper felt heavy.

Dr. Evans sat across from them, her hands folded over a fresh folder. ”I have reviewed your test results.”

Chloe stopped tracing the packet. The silence in the room suddenly felt very loud.

”There is a possibility,” the doctor continued. Her voice was gentle but clinical. ”But I need to be honest with both of you. There is absolutely no guarantee.”

Chloe stared at the blue wall. She knew this. Leo had already been careful when he first brought up the consultation. But hearing it out loud made the air feel thin.

Leo sat next to her. He watched her grip the paper until her knuckles turned white. He leaned in closer.

”You’re thinking too much,” he said softly. ℯℯ𝑙.

Chloe kept her eyes on the wall. ”I’m allowed to.”

”You’re allowed to. You’re just not allowed to decide this is your fault.”

That made her look at him. Her chest felt tight. She was afraid. It was not just the fear of the needles or the medication or the fact that this might fail. It was the fear that she would disappoint him.

Leo met her gaze. He could read the panic right behind her eyes. He reached over and covered her cold hand with his warm one.

”Chloe, I married you,” he said. His voice left no room for argument. ”Not your ability to have children.”

Chloe swallowed hard. The tightness in her chest cracked just a little.

Dr. Evans cleared her throat quietly before moving on to the next steps. She did not talk about miracles. She talked about science.

”We will start with a cycle of ovulation induction,” Dr. Evans explained. ”You will take medication to stimulate follicle growth. We will monitor you closely with ultrasounds. When the time is right, I will give you a very specific window for timed intercourse.”

Chloe listened carefully. The words felt huge and clinical. Follicles. Ultrasounds. Windows.

”I want to manage your expectations,” the doctor added. ”You may need multiple attempts. Success is not guaranteed on the first round. And please, try not to interpret every little symptom as a pregnancy. It will only break your heart if it is just a side effect of the medication. We will schedule follow-up appointments to track everything.”

Leo shifted in his chair. ”What are the side effects of the medication? What should we look out for?”

He asked about the timeline. He asked about the appointment schedules. Chloe sat quietly and realized something that made her breathe a little easier. He was not treating this like it was her problem to solve. He was treating it like a project they were managing together.

Thirty minutes later, they walked out of the clinic. The bright afternoon sun felt blinding after the dim office.

Chloe remained unusually quiet as they walked to the car. She watched the pavement beneath her shoes.

Leo unlocked the doors but did not get in. He looked across the roof of the car at her.

”What are you thinking?” he asked.

She hesitated with her hand on the door handle. ”What if it doesn’t work?”

Leo did not give her a fake, overly optimistic smile. He did not say it would definitely work.

”Then we’ll deal with that,” he said simply.

She looked up at him. ”And if we have to try again?”

”Then we try again.”

”And if it never happens?” Her voice came out smaller than she wanted it to.

Leo walked around the front of the car. He stopped right in front of her and took her hand.

”Then we’ll decide what our family looks like,” he said.

They drove away from the clinic and stopped at a small, casual diner on the way home. The smell of fried potatoes and burnt coffee filled the air. They sat in a corner booth.

While they were eating, Chloe noticed a couple two tables away. They were struggling. The baby in the high chair was screaming, throwing pieces of bread on the floor. The mother looked ready to cry.

Leo watched Chloe watching the chaotic scene.

Then he started laughing.

Chloe snapped her attention back to him. ”What?”

”You.”

”Me?”

”You used to hate children.”

Chloe immediately gave him a deeply offended look. ”I did not hate children.”

Leo raised an eyebrow. He picked up a fry. ”College. Sophomore year. We went to that diner near campus. A baby cried for five minutes. You complained for an hour. You said they were noisy, messy, and exhausting.”

Chloe rolled her eyes, though she could feel her cheeks warming up. She took a sip of her water. ”That was before I married you.”

Leo went entirely quiet. He lowered his fry back to the plate. That sentence hit him harder than she realized. The ambient noise of the diner seemed to fade for a second.

Then a slow, genuine smile spread across his face.

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. He finally admitted something he had kept quiet for a long time.

”I just want to know what it feels like to come home and have a little person running toward me.”

He did not want a massive family. He did not need five kids to prove anything. Even one child would make him the happiest man in the world.

Chloe looked at him. She saw the quiet longing in his eyes.

”But if this doesn’t work,” Leo continued, his tone turning serious, ”it doesn’t mean our family ends there. We can adopt.”

He did not say it like a backup plan. He did not say it like a consolation prize for a broken body. He just offered it as another path.

Chloe searched his face. ”You’d really be okay with that?”

”If that’s how we become a family, yes.”

Chloe put her fork down. The diner around them faded out completely. This was the moment. She needed to tell him the absolute truth.

”I don’t want to do this because I think I owe you one,” she said quietly.

Leo’s expression softened. The teasing edge was gone. ”Then why?”

She took a deep breath. Her chest fluttered. ”Because I want one.”

He stayed quiet. He let her speak.

”I used to think children would ruin everything,” she explained, looking down at her hands. ”I thought they would destroy the life I built. My career, my quiet mornings. But loving you changed me. I can actually picture our home with another person in it now.”

Leo smiled. It was the softest look she had ever seen on him. ”And now?”

She looked up to meet his eyes. ”Now I think maybe they would make everything bigger.”

That evening, the apartment felt different. The air was heavier but warmer.

Chloe sat at the kitchen table. The overhead light buzzed faintly. She had the doctor’s instructions spread out in front of her. She was reading the same paragraph about the fertile window for the fourth time.

Leo walked into the kitchen. He took the papers right out of her hands.

”Stop studying,” he said.

”I’m a grown woman. I can read.”

”You’re trying to memorize the entire treatment plan.”

”Because I’m nervous.”

His teasing expression disappeared. He pulled out the chair next to hers and sat down. The wood scraped lightly against the tile.

”You don’t have to figure out our entire future tonight,” he said.

He reached out and took her hand, his thumb tracing her knuckles.

”We just take the next step.”

Chloe let out a long breath. The tension in her shoulders finally melted. For once, she did not argue.

Later that night, the bedroom was quiet. The cool night breeze pushed past the curtains. The doctor had given them a schedule, a specific window for timed intercourse that would start soon. But right now, the schedule did not matter.

Chloe lay next to Leo in the dark. She turned her head on the pillow. Chloe stared at the ceiling for a moment before finally turning toward him.

”I’m scared,” she whispered.

Leo moved closer. He kissed her forehead. His lips felt warm against her skin.

”Then we’ll be scared together,” he whispered back.

She finally relaxed against him. She let her eyes close. When he kissed her again, it was slow and deliberate. It was not about a baby. It was about them. Chloe melted into his touch, no longer feeling like she was carrying this heavy burden all by herself.

The next morning, the room was painted in pale sunlight.

Chloe woke up before Leo. She turned onto her side and watched him sleep. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm. His face was relaxed, stripped of the usual sharp focus he wore during the day.

She lay there and just let herself imagine it.

She pictured the front door opening. Leo walking in, taking off his coat. A tiny voice calling for him. Little footsteps running across the hardwood floor. Their child.

Without thinking, she rested a hand against her flat stomach.

She caught herself a second later. A tiny smile appeared on her lips. She knew it was far too early. There was no pregnancy sign. There was no sudden miracle overnight.

There was just hope.

Leo shifted next to her. He slowly opened his eyes and blinked against the morning light. He found her looking at him.

”Why are you staring at me?” his voice was thick with sleep.

”I’m thinking.”

”That’s dangerous.”

She glared at him, playfully kicking his leg under the blankets. He laughed, a deep, rumbling sound that filled the quiet room.

Then Chloe became serious. The smile faded into something much softer.

”Leo?”

”Hmm?” he murmured, rubbing his eyes.

”Thank you.”

”For what?”

She hesitated. The sunlight caught the dust motes dancing in the air between them.

”For choosing me even if this doesn’t work.”

Leo’s expression changed immediately. The sleepiness vanished. He reached across the sheets and grabbed her hand, holding it tight.

”There was never another option.”

An hour later, they were getting ready for work together. Chloe stood by the front door, slipping on her shoes. Leo was in the kitchen pouring coffee into travel mugs.

Nothing had magically changed overnight. They were still standing in the middle of uncertainty. They still did not know whether the medical treatment would succeed. They did not know whether they would eventually adopt. They did not even know whether they would become parents at all.

But as Chloe grabbed her purse, she realized something. She was not afraid of the possibility anymore.

Leo handed her a mug. They walked out into the hallway together. Before closing the door, Chloe looked back briefly at their home. The living room looked exactly the same as it had yesterday.

But for the first time, the thought of becoming three did not feel like losing herself.

It felt like adding something to the life she already loved.

Chloe had once believed motherhood would take something away from her.

Now, for the first time, she wondered what it might give her.
