Rumor Has It I'm Dating the Football Captain

Chapter 130: Chapter 130: The Cost of Choosing You

The hospital room was quiet, except for the soft, steady hum of the medical monitors.

Mason was finally awake, though he still looked incredibly exhausted. The heavy pale color hadn’t completely left his face.

Audrey remained perfectly still in the uncomfortable plastic chair beside his bed.

A nurse quietly came into the room to check his vitals. She wrote something on a clipboard and left. When the door clicked shut, Mason turned his head on the thin pillow. He noticed Audrey hadn’t moved an inch.

He looked at her tiredly.

”You should go home,” Mason said quietly.

Audrey immediately shook her head. ”I’m fine.”

Mason gave her a completely flat, exhausted look.

”You’re a terrible liar,” Mason murmured.

Audrey almost smiled, despite the heavy knot in her chest.

Suddenly, her cell phone buzzed loudly against the plastic armrest. She looked down. The screen lit up with several missed notifications from Alexander.

Mason noticed the sudden change in her expression. He watched her carefully.

Her phone buzzed again with a new text.

Alexander: Are you coming home tonight?

Audrey stared at the bright screen for a long time. Her thumb hovered over the keyboard.

Slowly, she typed a reply:

I have some work to finish. I probably won’t come home tonight.

She hit send.

Mason saw just enough of the message and her guilty expression to understand exactly what was happening. He frowned.

”You’re lying to your boyfriend,” Mason said directly.

Audrey immediately locked her phone and shoved it into her pocket.

”I didn’t tell him anything that wasn’t true,” Audrey defended quickly. ”I do have work.”

Mason looked at the investigative files sitting untouched on the small table beside her. Then, he looked down at himself, lying in a hospital bed with an IV in his arm.

”Audrey,” Mason said softly.

She looked up at him.

”Go home,” Mason repeated.

Mason shifted slightly against the pillows.

”I am in a hospital,” Mason reminded her. His voice was calm but entirely firm. ”I have doctors. I have nurses. My family is already on their way. I have people who can take care of me.”

Audrey gripped the edge of her chair.

”You don’t need to sit here because you feel responsible for me,” Mason told her.

Audrey’s eyes immediately hardened. Her guilt vanished, replaced by a sudden, fierce flash of anger.

”I’m not here because I feel responsible,” Audrey argued sharply.

Mason studied her face. He saw the genuine panic still lingering in her eyes.

”Then why are you here?” Mason asked.

She didn’t answer.

He understood anyway. He didn’t need her to say it out loud.

Mason looked away, staring at the blank hospital wall. He spoke incredibly quietly.

”You have someone waiting for you at home,” Mason said.

Audrey looked down at her hands. ”I know.”

”Then go to him,” Mason told her.

Audrey’s voice completely broke. The heavy walls she had built around her heart finally shattered completely.

”I know this isn’t the best decision,” Audrey cried softly.

Mason stayed completely quiet.

She looked at him through her tears.

”But I can’t be away from you even for a second...” Audrey whispered. She swallowed hard, trying to fight the lump in her throat. ”Especially now.”

Mason’s expression changed. He completely understood exactly what she was saying.

But instead of taking advantage of her vulnerable state, instead of pulling her into his arms and demanding she stay, Mason showed exactly the kind of man he had become.

”Audrey,” Mason said gently. ”Don’t make a decision because you’re scared something will happen to me.”

He looked directly into her eyes. He wanted her more than anything in the world, but he absolutely refused to be a choice she made out of trauma. He wanted her to choose him while completely conscious of the heavy consequences.

Audrey wiped her cheeks.

”I know,” she told him.

But she firmly planted her feet on the hospital floor. After watching him collapse on that training field, she just couldn’t pretend anymore.

She had spent seven long years believing there would always be another chance. She thought they had all the time in the world. Now, she finally knew exactly how incredibly fragile that idea actually was.

”I am not leaving you tonight,” Audrey said stubbornly.

Mason let out a long, defeated sigh. He didn’t have the energy to argue with her anymore.

”Then stay tonight,” Mason relented softly.

A heavy beat passed between them.

”But tomorrow,” Mason added firmly, ”you go home.”

Audrey nodded.

The rest of the night passed in complete, comfortable quiet.

There was no sudden kissing. There was no dramatic declaration of love. There were just two exhausted people existing in the same room.

Eventually, Audrey fell asleep in the uncomfortable plastic chair, her head resting awkwardly against the wall.

At some point deep in the middle of the night, Mason woke up.

He turned his head. He saw her sleeping there, shivering slightly in the cold hospital air conditioning.

Mason carefully reached over the metal bedrail. He grabbed the extra thermal blanket from the end of his bed and gently pulled it higher around her shoulders, tucking her in.

He didn’t wake her. He just watched her breathe for a few minutes before closing his own eyes again.

The next morning, Audrey finally went home.

She showered, changed her clothes, and tried to sleep.

She couldn’t.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Mason collapsing on the grass.

By afternoon, she was back at the hospital.

She stayed until visiting hours ended, went home reluctantly, and returned the following morning.

Two days after Mason’s collapse, he was finally cleared to leave the hospital.

His family was completely hovering over him. His assistant had already aggressively reorganized his entire schedule for the next month.

Mason sat on the edge of the bed, buttoning a fresh shirt.

”I still have the international charity meetings on Friday,” Mason complained, looking at his mother.

Victoria Calloway stood near the door, her arms crossed firmly over her chest. She absolutely refused to hear it.

”You nearly collapsed in front of a child, Mason,” Victoria said sharply.

Mason instantly went completely silent. He looked down at the floor.

Audrey stood quietly in the corner, watching them.

She finally realized that this was exactly what Mason’s life had become. He carried absolutely everything. He carried his massive company. He carried the academy kids. He carried his painful, permanent injury. He carried his heavy responsibilities.

And somehow, he still tried to pretend he was perfectly fine.

It was time to leave.

Audrey stood near the door. Mason picked up his overnight bag.

There was no romantic goodbye in front of his family. There was just a quiet, incredibly heavy look passing between them.

”Go home, Audrey,” Mason said quietly.

She nodded. She slung her leather bag over her shoulder.

”I’ll see you,” Audrey said softly.

Mason looked at her. ”You will.”

Audrey turned around and walked out of the hospital. She walked into the bright afternoon sunlight.

She was completely terrified of what she had to do next, but for the very first time in years, she knew exactly where her heart was.

Audrey unlocked the door to her apartment.

Alexander was sitting at the kitchen island, drinking a glass of water.

He looked up when she walked in. He immediately noticed something completely different about her.

It wasn’t guilt. She wasn’t avoiding his eyes. It wasn’t confusion anymore.

It was absolute certainty.

He didn’t yell. He didn’t immediately demand to know exactly where she had been sleeping for the past two nights.

Instead, Alexander just looked at her tired face.

”Are you okay?” Alexander asked softly.

Audrey nodded slowly.

They walked into the living room and sat down together on the couch.

Audrey finally told him the truth.

She didn’t blame Alexander for anything. She didn’t say he wasn’t enough for her. She didn’t say Mason was a better man.

She just looked at him with entirely broken eyes.

”You didn’t do anything wrong, Alexander,” Audrey cried quietly.

Alexander stared down at his hands resting on his knees.

”I know,” Alexander responded softly.

That simple, quiet acceptance somehow made it infinitely harder.

Audrey started crying harder. She couldn’t stop the tears.

”I love you,” Audrey sobbed.

Alexander looked up at her. His eyes were completely hollow.

”But?” Alexander prompted gently.

Audrey closed her eyes. The pain in her chest was completely suffocating.

”But I still love him,” Audrey whispered.

Total silence fell over the apartment.

Alexander looked away. He stared at the blank television screen. He already knew. He had known since the night she came home smelling like wine. He just needed her to finally say the words out loud.

Alexander took a slow, deep breath.

He turned his head back to her. He needed to ask one final, incredibly important question.

”If Mason hadn’t gotten hurt...” Alexander asked quietly, ”would you still have come home?”

Audrey completely froze.

She looked at him.

She answered him with absolute honesty.

”Yes,” Audrey said.

Then, she swallowed hard.

”But I would have kept pretending I didn’t know what I wanted,” Audrey admitted.

Alexander nodded slowly.

The horrible accident on the training field didn’t magically create her feelings for Mason. It simply removed her ability to keep denying them.

”I need you to give me some time,” Alexander finally said. His voice was completely steady, but completely broken.

Audrey wiped her face and nodded. ”I will.”

She stood up from the couch.

”I’ll pack a few things.”

Alexander nodded.

She walked into the bedroom and packed only a small overnight bag.

She walked back into the living room. Alexander was still sitting in the exact same spot on the couch.

He watched her walk toward the front door.

Before she could turn the handle, Alexander spoke one last time.

”I really did love you, Audrey,” Alexander said softly.

Audrey stopped walking. Her hand gripped the cold metal doorknob. Her eyes filled with one last wave of hot tears.

”I know,” Audrey whispered.

And then, she opened the door and left.

Audrey stood alone in the hallway outside the apartment, holding her small overnight bag.

She looked back at the closed wooden door.

She was completely heartbroken. She was drowning in guilt. She was entirely terrified of what her life was going to look like tomorrow morning.

But for the very first time in seven years, she was no longer lying to herself.

Meanwhile, inside the quiet apartment, Alexander sat completely alone on the couch.

The living room looked exactly the same.

The glass on the kitchen island was still sitting where Alexander had left it.

Nothing in the apartment had changed.

Somehow, everything had.

Audrey had spent seven years afraid of losing Mason.

Now she had finally chosen him.

And for the first time, she understood that choosing someone could still break your heart.
