After the Immortal Disappeared

Chapter 94: Chapter 95: Meng Shan

This turned the wagon barricade into a crude fortress.

But no one expected Meng Shan, in a sudden burst of ferocity, to simply grab a wagon stacked on top and hurl it aside.

Of course, his chest was struck a dozen times by the Spear Halberds of the Great Wind Army, but none managed to pierce his Heavy Armor. Then, Meng Shan ripped apart the wagon before him and charged through!

Hee Lingchuan was raising his crossbow to fire and missed this display of unstoppable brute force. Unfortunately, he was directly in Meng Shan’s path and was consequently sent flying like a skyrocket.

What sent him flying was a giant shield.

Shields are typically two to three feet tall, but due to Meng Shan’s size, his custom-made greatshield was over four feet tall. It weighed more than one hundred fifty pounds, was forged from ebony infused with Yellow Essence Copper, and featured a painted Baxia on its face.

This weapon wasn’t just painstakingly forged for defense. Backed by Meng Shan’s immense strength, it served as a heavy weapon in its own right. Now, with a giant axe in one hand and a heavy shield in the other, he was wreaking havoc on the battlefield.

No one dared to challenge him directly.

With this champion clearing the path, the Baling People quickly poured through the breach in the wagon barricade.

”Before you try to shoot Meng Shan, you’d better think twice,” a Warrior a few feet away said suddenly, just as Hee Lingchuan was about to act. ”At least, don’t do it here.”

The man had taken a nasty cut to his thigh, deep enough to hit an artery—luckily, his family jewels were spared. Aluo had already patched him up, but it meant he couldn’t move easily. He was now stuck hiding behind a wagon, taking potshots at the enemy on the riverbank above.

Hee Lingchuan glanced over and thought, ’This guy is one crafty bastard.’ His hiding spot was devious; his entire body was concealed by the wagon, making him a difficult target for the enemies above. He, however, could shoot up at them through a gap between two planks.

His aim was far better than Hee Lingchuan’s. He landed one of every two shots, and with each hit, an enemy would scream and tumble down.

This significantly relieved the pressure on the forces fighting on the riverbed.

A man like that might not have been the strongest fighter, but he had a unique talent for survival. After all, when the battle’s over, the ones still breathing are the only ones who have anything.

So, an idea sparking in his mind, Hee Lingchuan said to the man, ”I’ve made up my mind. Help me with two more crossbows!”

The man had a One-Handed Crossbow at his feet as well. Upon hearing the request, he loaded two of them and tossed them over. ”What’s your name?”

”Hee Lingchuan.”

Hee Lingchuan slung one crossbow over his back, held the other, and forced himself to his feet. ”Time to play our trump card.”

’If it weren’t for that medicine, I doubt I’d be able to move at all. That stuff is amazing. When I wake up from this dream, I’ve got to find a way to get some more.’

”My name is Hu Min.” The man saluted him. ”If you fall, we will carry on the fight.”

Hee Lingchuan rolled his eyes and hurried toward the second line of the wagon barricade, shouting, ”Throw the money! What are you waiting for?”

It was time.

Dozens of men were stationed behind the second line of the barricade, using the wagons as cover and firing arrows from on top of them. At Hee Lingchuan’s shout, several squads decided it was indeed time, grabbing the items they had waiting and hurling them forward.

That’s right. What they threw was gold, silver, and jewels.

With a great CLATTERING and JINGLING, gold coins, silver coins, pearls, and agate spheres bounced and rolled across the ground.

’This scene reminded Hee Lingchuan of a game he used to play. What was that one skill called again?’

Money Rain.

’Wait, who threw a golden toilet out there too?’

The Baling People thought they were being pelted with hidden weapons, but when they looked closely, they saw a dazzling, glittering fortune.

Wealth stirs the hearts of men.

There’s gold on the ground. How do you react?

You bend down and pick it up, of course.

The Baling Army soldiers who had just broken through the barricade instinctively bent down to grab the money.

Let someone else worry about the sky falling. Money in your own pocket is the only thing you can count on.

These grunts had come to the Panlong Wasteland to risk their lives. Ultimately, they were here because they’d committed crimes, been conscripted, or were desperate for money.

Unlike the inhabitants of the Panlong Wasteland, they could eventually return home, and this gold and silver would be incredibly useful to them.

With the Baling People thrown into chaos, the Great Wind Army didn’t hesitate. They swung their blades and began to cut them down.

As for Meng Shan, everyone deliberately gave him a wide berth.

The common soldiers knew a thorny problem like him was beyond them. That was a job for their superiors.

So even though Meng Shan was on a rampage, aside from unlucky souls like Hee Lingchuan, he hadn’t actually taken many men out of the fight.

Of course, he also succeeded in attracting the attention of Commander Xiao. The commander sheathed his saber, took up a Long Spear, and roared, ”Do not panic! The enemy’s fortune wanes! Fight well!”

At his reminder, everyone looked closely and saw that the glow around the Baling Army soldiers had indeed dimmed, nowhere near as bright as before.

There had already been a morale gap between the two sides; this just made it even more pronounced.

What was going on? Why had the enemy’s morale suddenly plummeted? Hee Lingchuan only understood the answer when he took a closer look at Meng Shan:

The green light emanating from the giant warrior had suddenly become intensely brilliant.

In other words, he was using the Society Command to reallocate their fortune, and he’d taken a larger share for himself.

If he takes more, the other soldiers naturally get less.

Such a distribution was understandable. Meng Shan was tasked with breaking the wagon barricade and shattering the Great Wind Army’s defensive line. It made sense for him to be as strong as possible to concentrate his power, and he had, in fact, succeeded.

His next target, then, was the second line of the barricade.

Meng Shan was about to charge forward, but Commander Xiao had already intercepted him, engaging him with a Long Spear to hold him in place.

Meng Shan protected his vital points—his neck and eyes—and unleashed a volley of cuts at Commander Xiao.

Even from a distance, Hee Lingchuan could hear the wind whistle with each swing of the axe.

Even someone like Commander Xiao probably wouldn’t be able to stay on his feet if one of those blows landed.

Of course, facing an opponent with such astonishing strength, Commander Xiao had no intention of meeting force with force. Dodging and deflecting, he let the tip of his spear flash with a cold light, delivering more than a dozen strikes in a furious storm of attacks!

The Martial Art was simply breathtaking. Even staring without blinking, Hee Lingchuan felt his eyes blur, unable to follow the speed of the Commander’s hands.

The Long Spear left afterimages in its wake. Most terrifying of all, every single strike landed on the exact same spot: the joint at the back of Meng Shan’s knee!

Even with a full suit of Heavy Armor, the joints were always a relative weak point.

Meng Shan staggered, crying out in pain. He suddenly raised his heavy shield and slammed it into the ground.

BOOM! A massive shockwave radiated out from him. The ground in a hundred-foot radius trembled as if in a magnitude-eight earthquake. Friend and foe alike were caught off guard and thrown to the ground, while loose objects were sent bouncing into the air.

Commander Xiao, at the epicenter of the shockwave, was unable to keep his footing and was forced back three large steps.

Meng Shan seized the opportunity, swinging his axe. CLANG, CLANG, CLANG! Commander Xiao reacted swiftly, blocking all three blows with his Long Spear, but the force sent him flying back more than twenty feet.

Despite his great height and Heavy Armor, Meng Shan was not the least bit clumsy. In fact, the speed of his axe was astonishing. Hee Lingchuan saw a faint glow on the axe head and guessed the weapon was enchanted with some kind of Light Body or swiftness effect.

A mighty warrior and a powerful weapon, each enhancing the other.

Meng Shan started to give chase, but an arrow went WHOOSHING toward his eye.

The giant raised his axe, and the broad face of the blade easily deflected the arrow.
