Ethan Vale slumped farther into his office chair.

”...Seriously?”

He stared at the analytics page on his monitor.

The graph looked like it had fallen down a staircase.

Views.

Engagement.

Comments.

Shares.

Every number had dipped.

Not catastrophically.

But enough.

Enough to notice.

Enough to annoy him.

Enough to make him feel as though the entire world had decided to move on without asking his permission.

He let out a long sigh.

”It figures.”

Just when he’d managed to make a name for himself...

Reality itself had changed.

Again.

He rubbed both hands down his face.

The First Divergence had been a reporter’s dream.

Impossible creatures.

Government uncertainty.

Public fear.

Political tension.

Endless questions.

Every day brought another story.

Another interview.

Another investigation.

Another exclusive.

He’d worked tirelessly.

Barely slept.

Chased every lead.

Asked every uncomfortable question.

Built an audience that expected him to stay ahead of everyone else.

He’d finally begun making a name for himself.

Then...

The Second Divergence happened.

”...Unbelievable.”

He leaned back.

The ceiling suddenly seemed very interesting.

The world had quite literally become different.

Not metaphorically.

Not politically.

Actually different.

The Earth was larger.

Cities farther apart.

Entire forests had appeared overnight.

Mountain ranges existed where maps insisted there shouldn’t be any.

Roads stopped in the middle of nowhere.

Railways ended at cliffs.

Physics apparently accepted revisions now.

Meanwhile...

Vampires and werewolves had practically vanished from public discussion.

Not literally.

Of course not.

People still talked about them.

Still argued.

Still feared them.

But...

Compared to the impossible scale of the Second Divergence...

They had become...

Background noise.

Ethan clicked through another trending page.

Infrastructure.

Exploration.

Wildlife.

New geography.

Supply chains.

Construction.

Mapping.

Emergency engineering.

The same topics repeated over and over.

Vampires appeared occasionally.

Werewolves less frequently.

Neither remained at the center.

He frowned.

”I’ve tried.”

He really had.

Every article.

Every interview.

Every subjective opinion piece.

He’d attempted to rekindle the discussion.

To remind people that vampires remained dangerous.

That the Second Divergence hadn’t somehow made fangs disappear.

Or claws.

Or blood.

Yet...

Each attempt felt the same.

Like throwing a pebble into a lake.

A few ripples.

Then stillness.

The conversation simply...

Moved elsewhere.

Humanity had become occupied with surviving a larger world.

He opened another social media page.

The comments looked familiar.

”The world literally doubled in size and you’re still talking about vampires?”

”We have bigger problems.”

”Roads don’t even work anymore.”

”I’m more worried about the giant bears.”

”Can we map the new forests before starting another argument?”

Ethan sighed.

He couldn’t even argue with some of them.

That annoyed him more.

People couldn’t hate quite so fiercely anymore.

Not because they’d suddenly embraced coexistence.

Far from it.

Hatred still existed.

Fear still existed.

So did prejudice.

But something had changed.

The First Divergence could be dismissed as impossible.

A once-in-history catastrophe.

Then came the Second.

Reality had established a pattern.

One event.

Then another.

Nobody knew if there would ever be a Third Divergence.

Or a Fourth.

Or a Tenth.

Perhaps there never would.

Perhaps humanity had witnessed the only two that would ever occur.

Nobody knew.

That uncertainty lingered.

People joked about it.

Argued about it.

Insisted it was ridiculous.

Yet...

The possibility remained.

And that possibility had quietly altered public conversation.

People found it more difficult to passionately demand the destruction of an entire species...

When reality had twice demonstrated it was willing to rewrite the rules without asking permission.

No one wanted to become the next surprise.

Not really.

Of course...

The odds seemed unimaginably low.

Low enough that anti-vampire groups still existed.

Low enough that protests continued.

Low enough that accusations still spread online.

Werewolves attracted less attention than vampires.

Always had.

Their appearance simply inspired less immediate fear.

Even so...

The overwhelming majority of discussion had shifted.

After the Second Divergence...

Continuing to insist vampires represented humanity’s greatest problem...

Felt strangely...

Small.

The world itself had become unfamiliar.

Reality had become questionable.

Nonhuman species still mattered.

Just...

Not as exclusively as before.

Ethan minimized another webpage.

Then opened a satellite image.

The city looked ordinary.

Everything beyond it...

Didn’t.

Cities now sat roughly twice as far apart as before.

He still struggled to visualize it.

Not because the mathematics confused him.

Because the reality did.

Everything between cities had expanded.

Forests.

Fields.

Mountains.

Valleys.

Rivers.

Roads simply...

Stopped.

Highways reached the city limits.

Then ended.

Not because they were unfinished.

Because new terrain now occupied the space where asphalt once continued.

Driving beyond civilization had become an exercise in frustration.

Rail transport had fared little better.

Entire sections of track now terminated hundreds of feet from their next segment.

The country had not become disconnected.

Exactly.

Rather...

It had become fragmented.

Cities remained alive.

Towns still functioned.

But each had become increasingly isolated.

The age of effortless overland transportation had ended overnight.

For now.

Engineers would eventually rebuild.

Roads would eventually return.

Bridges would eventually span new rivers.

It would happen.

Someday.

But not today.

Today...

Humanity occupied islands of civilization separated by wilderness.

Ethan opened another folder.

Unpublished.

Dozens of unsent posts appeared.

Speculative questions.

Drafts.

Indistinct photographs.

Uncertain investigations.

Stories.

Stories he’d intended to publish.

Stories alluding to vampire attacks.

Questioning government policy.

Discussing missing persons.

Rumors.

Speculation.

The folder had once felt invaluable.

Now...

He simply stared at it.

”...Maybe.”

He quietly murmured.

”...The time came and went.”

He clicked one article.

Read the opening paragraph.

Closed it again.

Another.

Then another.

Each one still made sense.

None of them were inaccurate.

None of them had suddenly become untrue.

Yet...

They belonged to another conversation.

Another week.

Another world.

One before forests swallowed the horizon.

Before maps became obsolete.

Before humanity collectively realized the laws of nature apparently negotiated with no one.

He rested both elbows on his desk.

His eyes drifted toward the analytics page again.

The numbers continued updating.

Slowly.

Steadily.

Just...

Lower.

He laughed.

The sound held no amusement.

”...Figures.”

Vampires...

He understood.

He could interview them.

Challenge them.

Question them.

Expose them.

Demonize them.

They were people.

Complicated.

Contradictory.

Capable of choosing.

That made stories.

Conflict.

Narrative.

Emotion.

Readers engaged with that.

The world itself...

Was different.

The planet had expanded.

What exactly was he supposed to do?

Interview a forest?

Question a mountain?

Ask reality why it had decided geometry was optional?

The absurdity almost made him laugh again.

Almost.

He looked toward the window.

Night had settled outside.

Streetlights illuminated familiar roads.

Beyond the city...

Darkness.

Somewhere beyond that darkness...

Forests stretched farther than anyone had walked.

Animals larger than yesterday wandered beneath unfamiliar trees.

Old maps had become historical artifacts.

He rubbed one temple.

”...That’s the problem.”

The story had become too large.

Before...

The question had been simple.

Can humanity coexist with vampires?

Now...

The question looked almost childish.

Humanity had become one species among several.

On a world that no longer resembled the one it had known.

Reality itself had become uncertain.

How did anyone prioritize one issue over another?

He honestly didn’t know anymore.

That uncertainty showed everywhere.

Public discussion reflected it.

People still debated vampires.

Certainly.

They still debated werewolves.

Naturally.

But those debates now competed against entirely different questions.

Could there be another Divergence?

Would the world change again?

Were there more undiscovered lands?

Could new species appear tomorrow?

Did the laws of physics mean anything anymore?

No article about vampires could compete with questions like those.

Not consistently.

Not anymore.

Ironically...

His work before the Second Divergence had been remarkably successful. Some of his investigations had gained national attention.

For several days... People seriously debated whether vampires could influence human thoughts.

Whether prolonged exposure changed a person’s behavior.

The discussions had been endless.

Fierce.

Exhausting.

Now...

Those same debates lingered quietly beneath larger conversations.

Not forgotten.

Simply...

Buried.

Vampires.

Werewolves.

For a brief moment in history...

They had become...

Old news.

Ethan slowly closed the folder of unpublished articles.

His fingers rested on the cover for several seconds.

He wasn’t giving up.

Not yet.

Stories still existed.

People still existed.

Questions still existed.

He simply needed to find where the world’s attention had gone.

Because chasing yesterday’s headlines...

Would only leave him behind in tomorrow’s world.

───

President Leland Everson rested both hands on the polished conference table.

The Situation Room had not grown quieter since the Second Divergence.

If anything...

It had become louder.

Not in volume.

In responsibility.

Voices came and went.

Maps updated.

Reports accumulated.

Entire departments continuously revised projections that became obsolete within hours.

Leland hadn’t slept.

Not after the First Divergence.

Certainly not after the Second.

The first had introduced two entirely new intelligent species into the world.

The second...

Had rewritten the world itself.

He rubbed the bridge of his nose.

”...Continue.”

One wall displayed an updated satellite map.

It still looked wrong.

Not because the imaging was inaccurate.

Because it was.

Real.

The Unified Sovereignties sprawled across a continent that had nearly quadrupled in land area.

New forests stretched for hundreds of miles.

Mountain ranges split regions apart.

Rivers carved entirely new paths across the landscape.

The familiar outline of civilization remained.

Everything between cities...

Did not.

The room remained silent for several moments as everyone studied the map.

No one had become accustomed to it.

General Roland Beckett broke the silence.

”The transportation assessment has been updated.”

Leland looked toward him.

”It isn’t encouraging.”

Beckett tapped a remote.

Several highlighted routes appeared.

”Highway infrastructure beyond urban centers has effectively ceased functioning.”

Another image appeared.

A bridge.

Or rather...

Half of one.

The roadway simply ended over a valley that hadn’t existed yesterday.

”Rail transport has suffered comparable disruption.”

Another image.

Steel rails ending abruptly at the edge of a newly formed forest.

”Existing freight schedules are no longer viable.”

The general folded his hands behind his back.

”Even if destinations are only approximately twice as far apart geographically...”

He gestured toward the display.

”The practical distance has increased far beyond that.”

Leland nodded slowly.

He understood.

Twice the distance.

Broken infrastructure.

Untouched wilderness.

None of those problems existed independently anymore.

They compounded.

”We’re estimating...”

Beckett continued.

”...that moving meaningful quantities of equipment over land will remain severely restricted until entirely new transportation corridors are constructed.”

Another advisor spoke.

”Fuel distribution has become significantly more difficult.”

Another.

”Construction equipment cannot reliably reach many affected regions.”

Another.

”Survey teams require aerial support simply to determine where roads can even be rebuilt.”

Leland quietly listened.

One report followed another.

Each larger than the last.

Every solution required another solution before it.

Roads required surveys.

Surveys required aircraft.

Aircraft required fuel.

Fuel required transportation.

Transportation required roads.

The cycle repeated endlessly.

He slowly exhaled.

”This isn’t just our problem.”

Several heads turned toward him.

”It isn’t even this administration’s problem.”

He looked around the table.

”The rebuilding effort...”

His gaze returned to the satellite map.

”...will outlive every person in this room.”

Silence followed.

No one disagreed.

The Second Divergence had occurred only that afternoon.

Already...

Everyone understood.

Entire presidential administrations would come and go before reconstruction truly finished.

Perhaps generations.

The scale simply refused to fit inside ordinary political timelines.

Leland stood.

He walked closer to the wall display.

The new map filled his vision.

”So much land.”

He murmured.

No one answered immediately.

The Unified Sovereignties now possessed territory beyond anything previous governments had managed.

Forests.

Mountains.

Freshwater.

Minerals.

Agricultural potential.

Natural resources beyond easy estimation.

On paper...

It was extraordinary.

In practice...

It was overwhelming.

The amount of manpower required to survey it alone staggered the imagination.

Making use of it?

Roads.

Power.

Communications.

Housing.

Industry.

Every mile demanded people.

Equipment.

Money.

Time.

He almost laughed.

Had someone offered him four times the land a week ago...

He would’ve called it the greatest opportunity in history.

Today...

It looked like the greatest logistical challenge humanity had ever faced.

General Beckett resumed.

”Our military assessment has also been revised.”

Leland looked back toward him.

”The ability to project force across the country has degraded substantially.”

Several officers nodded.

Beckett continued.

”Heavy armored formations remain operational.”

”But relocating them has become significantly more difficult.”

”Rail transport is disrupted.”

”Highways terminate unexpectedly.”

”Fuel convoys cannot reliably maintain schedules.”

He paused.

”The initiative provided by mechanized warfare has been reduced.”

Not eliminated.

Reduced.

Leland appreciated the distinction.

”What about other nations?”

Beckett answered immediately.

”They’re facing the same problems.”

”No one escaped this.”

”Our strategic position relative to other major powers remains broadly similar.”

The general allowed himself a faint smile.

”We all became less mobile together.”

A few quiet chuckles passed around the room.

The humor lasted only a moment.

Leland returned to his seat.

He folded his hands.

”The public response?”

An advisor slid a tablet toward him.

”Confusion.”

Another.

”High engagement with mapping projects.”

Another.

”High concern regarding infrastructure.”

Another.

”Concern regarding wildlife.”

Leland skimmed the summaries.

Vampires appeared.

Werewolves appeared.

Neither dominated.

He looked up.

”It shifted.”

No one questioned what he meant.

”The public.”

He looked around the room.

”Integration still seems uncertain.”

”It probably will remain uncertain for some time.”

He rested one forearm on the table.

”But...”

He glanced once more toward the satellite imagery.

”The Second Divergence has changed the conversation.”

”The focus isn’t solely vampires anymore.”

”Or werewolves.”

He slowly shook his head.

”The world itself has become the crisis.”

Vice President Gideon Rourke sat quietly until now.

He finally spoke.

”Regardless.”

Every eye shifted toward him.

”The immediate priority remains transportation.”

He folded one hand over the other.

”Road reconstruction.”

”Rail.”

”Bridges.”

”Power infrastructure.”

”Our resources will naturally shift toward those objectives.”

He paused briefly.

”Conveniently.”

His voice remained measured.

”The Second Divergence has also provided political cover for vampires.”

Several expressions around the table remained neutral.

Gideon continued.

”They’ve largely disappeared from public attention.”

”They haven’t become less dangerous.”

”They’ve simply become less discussed.”

General Beckett looked toward him.

”I don’t entirely agree.”

Gideon’s eyebrow lifted.

”No?”

Beckett shook his head.

”They were never the principal threat.”

A brief silence settled across the room.

Gideon’s dissatisfaction appeared immediately.

”They’re a predatory species.”

”They require human blood.”

”They possess superior physical capabilities.”

Beckett nodded once.

”All true.”

He remained perfectly calm.

”But those facts don’t automatically make them the greatest threat facing civilization.”

He gestured toward the enormous map.

”This does.”

The display dominated the room.

Forests.

Mountains.

Broken transportation.

Entire regions disconnected.

”Our ability to feed cities.”

”Move medicine.”

”Repair infrastructure.”

”Respond to disasters.”

He looked directly at Gideon.

”Those concerns presently affect every citizen.”

”Vampires do not.”

Gideon’s jaw tightened slightly.

”They will.”

”Perhaps.”

Beckett replied.

”But not tonight.”

Leland watched the exchange quietly.

Both men had valid concerns.

Just...

Different priorities.

The Vice President focused on what vampires might become.

The Chairman focused on what the Second Divergence already was.

Neither perspective could simply be dismissed.

Leland finally spoke.

”We’re dealing with two separate issues.”

The room became still.

”The emergence of vampires and werewolves remains significant.”

”No one here is forgetting that.”

He looked toward Gideon.

”But General Beckett is correct.”

He turned toward the map again.

”The immediate crisis isn’t political.”

”It isn’t biological.”

”It isn’t military.”

His eyes settled on the fractured transportation network.

”It’s logistical.”

He let that word linger.

”Civilization depends upon movement.”

”Food.”

”Medicine.”

”Fuel.”

”Construction materials.”

”Emergency responders.”

”Everything depends upon movement.”

He lightly tapped the table.

”The Second Divergence attacked movement itself.”

No one interrupted.

”It didn’t destroy our cities.”

”It separated them.”

That distinction mattered.

Greatly.

One advisor quietly spoke.

”Mr. President.”

”If reconstruction takes decades...”

Leland looked toward him.

”...what becomes of the regions between cities?”

Silence.

An honest question.

One without an immediate answer.

Leland considered it.

”We learn.”

Several people looked surprised.

He continued.

”We survey.”

”We map.”

”We establish routes.”

”We adapt.”

He managed a faint smile.

”Humanity has spent its entire history adapting.”

”This won’t be the exception.”

General Beckett nodded once.

”I agree.”

Leland leaned back slightly.

”The world became larger.”

”So must our thinking.”

He looked around the table.

”We’ve all spent ten days discussing coexistence.”

He paused.

”Perhaps...”

He looked once more toward the vast satellite image.

”...the Second Divergence has reminded us that coexistence isn’t only about humans, vampires, and werewolves.”

”It is.”

He gestured toward the entire world.

”...about learning how to exist in a place that has become fundamentally different.”

No one spoke.

There wasn’t much left to add.

Outside the Situation Room...

Thousands of officials continued working through the night.

Military planners.

Engineers.

Scientists.

Emergency coordinators.

Governors.

Mayors.

Police.

Surveyors.

Every one of them faced the same impossible reality.

The world they had gone to sleep in yesterday...

No longer existed.

And tomorrow morning...

They would begin learning how to govern the one that had replaced it.
