The hours before sunset passed quietly.

For the first time in days, the manor felt... peaceful.

Outside, clouds drifted lazily across a pale afternoon sky, sunlight spilling over the surrounding woodland while birds sang somewhere beyond the windows.

Inside...

The television murmured softly in the background.

Every channel still discussed the previous day’s attack.

Analysts debated self-defense.

Legal experts argued over the hunters’ actions.

Commentators replayed the livestream once again.

None of the vampires paid it much attention anymore.

They had already watched enough.

Rosaline lounged across an armchair, idly tossing a small rubber ball into the air before catching it again.

Cordelia had somehow convinced Adelaide to play chess.

Adelaide maintained the same calm expression she’d worn for nearly ten minutes.

Cordelia looked increasingly suspicious.

”...You’re planning something.”

Adelaide looked up.

”I am.”

”I knew it.”

”You’ve known for eight moves.”

Cordelia sighed dramatically.

”I don’t appreciate honesty.”

Nearby, Celestine quietly read through another news article while Evelyn sat beside her, humming softly to herself as she absentmindedly braided a loose strand of blonde hair.

Gwendolyn smiled while watching videos on her phone, occasionally giggling beneath her breath.

Violetta remained seated near the windows, reading through government statements as they appeared.

Valerie lay comfortably across another couch.

Doing absolutely nothing.

She seemed perfectly content.

Only Lavinia and Evangeline had become... competitive.

They sat opposite one another.

Knees almost touching.

One hand resting between them.

The game itself couldn’t have been simpler.

Each would attempt to touch the other’s hand.

The other only needed to catch it first.

To humans...

It would’ve been impossible.

To vampires...

It was just difficult enough to be entertaining.

Lavinia darted forward.

Evangeline’s fingers closed around her wrist.

”...Again.”

They reset.

Lavinia tried a different angle.

Evangeline intercepted her effortlessly.

”...Again.”

Rosaline looked over.

”How many attempts has that been?”

”Thirty-two,” Gwendolyn answered without looking up.

Lavinia frowned.

”...You’ve been counting?”

”I got bored.”

”I feel attacked.”

”You are.”

Lavinia ignored her.

She narrowed her crimson eyes.

”This time.”

Evangeline smiled pleasantly.

”I’m ready.”

Lavinia lunged.

For the briefest instant...

She thought she’d won.

Then Evangeline’s hand caught hers once again.

”...No.”

”Yes.”

”No.”

”Yes.”

Lavinia folded her arms.

”You’re cheating.”

A tiny giggle escaped Evangeline.

”I am not.”

”You are.”

”I simply have complete confidence in my abilities.”

She puffed out her chest proudly.

Lavinia stared at her.

”...You’re so annoying.”

She reached forward and shoved Evangeline’s shoulder.

The other vampire barely moved.

Evangeline only smiled wider.

”Thank you.”

”...That wasn’t a compliment.”

”I accepted it as one.”

Lavinia groaned dramatically.

”I liked you better five minutes ago.”

”You said the same thing five minutes ago.”

”I meant it then, too.”

More laughter spread throughout the room.

Even Adelaide smiled faintly.

Lavinia opened her mouth to continue complaining.

She never spoke.

Everything vanished.

The room disappeared.

The warmth.

The laughter.

The scent of old wood.

The crackling fireplace.

The television.

Even her own body.

Nothing remained.

Darkness.

Not the darkness of closed eyes.

Not the darkness of an unlit room.

The absence...

Of everything.

She couldn’t feel herself breathing.

Couldn’t move.

Couldn’t even tell whether she still possessed a body.

For one impossible instant...

Panic gripped her.

Had she...

Died?

No.

No...

She knew this.

Somehow...

She knew this.

A memory surfaced.

A sensation impossible to describe.

Time had stopped.

No...

Time raced forward so quickly that it no longer seemed to move at all.

Both felt equally true.

The contradiction made no sense.

It never had.

The feeling...

The silence...

The isolation...

Recognition struck her all at once.

The Divergence.

It was exactly the same.

She wasn’t dreaming.

She wasn’t unconscious.

She wasn’t dead.

This was...

The Divergence.

Again.

The realization had barely formed...

When the world returned.

Air rushed into her lungs.

The scent of polished wood filled her nose.

The warmth of the room settled against her skin.

The crackling fireplace.

The distant television.

Every sound returned simultaneously.

Lavinia blinked.

Across the room...

Everyone else stared around with identical expressions.

Rosaline’s rubber ball rolled quietly across the floor.

Cordelia still held a chess piece halfway above the board.

Adelaide hadn’t moved.

Gwendolyn’s phone rested forgotten in her lap.

Valerie slowly sat upright.

Nobody spoke.

For several long seconds...

Silence consumed the room.

Violetta stood first.

Her composure remained mostly intact.

Only the surprise visible in her crimson eyes betrayed her.

”...This...”

She looked around the room.

”...is the second time.”

Nobody argued.

Nobody could.

Gwendolyn swallowed.

Her voice came quietly.

”...The Second Divergence.”

The words settled heavily over the room.

Second.

Not first.

Not unique.

Whatever had changed reality once...

Had done so again.

Lavinia slowly looked toward the windows.

Everything outside appeared...

Normal.

The trees still stood.

Clouds drifted overhead.

Birds continued flying.

”...What...”

She frowned.

”...what changes this time?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Her thoughts raced.

The first Divergence had changed everything.

Vampires.

Werewolves.

The entire world transformed overnight.

Her eyes widened slightly.

”...Do we have more company now?”

Another species?

Something stranger?

Something worse?

No one knew.

Violetta reached instinctively for her phone.

The screen illuminated.

Notifications flooded downward so rapidly they became impossible to read.

Emergency alerts.

Government announcements.

News updates.

Scientific bulletins.

Her expression remained composed.

Until...

It didn’t.

A sharp gasp escaped her.

Every head turned.

For perhaps the first time since anyone had known her...

Violetta looked genuinely shocked.

”...No...”

Rosaline immediately stood.

”What?”

Violetta continued staring.

”...It’s too soon to know if...”

She swallowed.

”...if there are more species.”

Her finger trembled slightly as she scrolled.

”But...”

She slowly looked toward the others.

”...the world...”

Another pause.

”...changed.”

Nobody spoke.

She connected her phone to the television.

The news vanished.

A satellite image replaced it.

At first...

Lavinia didn’t understand what she was seeing.

Then...

Recognition dawned.

”...That’s...”

The continent.

Only...

It wasn’t.

The familiar outline remained.

Yet enormous expanses of green surrounded every city.

Forests.

Plains.

Mountain ranges.

Rivers.

Entire regions none of them recognized.

Cities appeared...

Smaller.

Not physically.

Relatively.

Almost swallowed by endless wilderness.

A stunned silence settled over the room.

Violetta enlarged the image.

”...These are only preliminary estimates.”

She continued reading.

”It’s only been minutes.”

Scientists.

Government agencies.

Satellite operators.

Everyone was still trying to verify the data.

”But...”

She looked back toward the screen.

”...every observation agrees.”

She zoomed farther outward.

”The planet...”

Another silence.

”...appears to have nearly doubled in size.”

Nobody breathed.

Maps shifted across the display.

Countries.

Coastlines.

New forests stretching for hundreds of miles.

Towering mountain ranges where none had existed.

Vast river systems.

Lakes.

Rolling plains.

Dense woodland without roads.

Without towns.

Without any indication people had ever lived there.

Lavinia watched as Violetta dragged a finger across the screen.

The image glided effortlessly.

New terrain continued appearing.

Again.

And again.

It seemed endless.

”...I don’t recognize any of this.”

Neither did anyone else.

Rosaline stared.

”...Where did it come from?”

No answer existed.

Not yet.

Perhaps never.

Adelaide quietly observed another region.

”No roads.”

Cordelia leaned closer.

”...No farms either.”

”Nothing.”

Just...

Nature.

Untouched.

Primeval.

Celestine spoke softly.

”...It’s beautiful.”

Evelyn nodded.

”It is.”

Gwendolyn looked toward another article.

”They’re already saying maps will have to be redrawn.”

”They’ll have to.”

Violetta agreed.

”The existing ones...”

She glanced back toward the television.

”...are no longer accurate.”

Silence settled once more.

Not fearful.

Simply...

Overwhelmed.

The first Divergence had introduced two new species.

The second...

Had rewritten the world itself.

Lavinia leaned back against the couch.

A quiet hum escaped her.

”...Apparently...”

She smiled faintly.

”...anything can change.”

Around the room...

One by one...

The others nodded.

No one could disagree.

If reality itself could simply decide that the world was twice as large as it had been only moments before...

Then perhaps there had never truly been rules to begin with.

Only the comforting illusion that there had been.

───

The studio lights shone brightly across the newsroom.

Behind the anchor’s desk, enormous displays had replaced their usual graphics with constantly updating satellite imagery, maps, emergency notices, and photographs arriving from around the world.

The atmosphere remained unusually subdued.

Everyone understood they were reporting history.

Again.

The anchor folded her hands neatly atop the desk before looking directly into the camera.

”Good evening.”

Her expression remained composed despite the scale of the events unfolding around the globe.

”Approximately five hours ago, humanity experienced what officials are now formally referring to as the Second Divergence.”

Behind her, a timeline appeared.

Day 0 - The First Divergence

Day 10 - The Second Divergence

”The event itself was identical to the first.”

Images of citizens standing motionless, security footage freezing as people suddenly collapsed or stood perfectly still before abruptly recovering, and countless phone recordings filled the displays.

”Millions of people have independently reported experiencing the same phenomenon witnessed during the First Divergence.”

The footage changed.

”An overwhelming sensation that all perception ceased.”

Another clip appeared.

”Many described feeling as though time had simultaneously stopped...”

Another.

”...and passed almost instantly.”

The anchor nodded slightly.

”Authorities have confirmed these reports are consistent across every inhabited continent.”

The screen behind her shifted again.

A rotating image of Earth slowly filled the display.

It looked...

Wrong.

Familiar.

Yet unmistakably different.

”The most significant discovery made since the Second Divergence concerns our planet itself.”

The image enlarged.

Continents drifted slowly beneath the camera.

New coastlines stretched for incredible distances.

Immense forests surrounded familiar cities.

Mountain chains rose where no mountains had existed that morning.

”According to current satellite observations and aerial surveys...”

She paused briefly.

”...the Earth’s surface area has increased to approximately four times what it was just five hours ago.”

Silence lingered for a moment.

”The implications of this cannot yet be fully understood.”

More images appeared.

Researchers.

Military satellites.

Weather agencies.

Air traffic controllers.

Teams around the world hurriedly compared pre-Divergence maps with the reality now visible from orbit.

”Governments across the globe are currently attempting to produce entirely new maps.”

The display zoomed into North America.

Cities remained.

Roads still threaded through them.

Highways still circled metropolitan areas.

Yet beyond them...

Green.

Almost endless green.

”The challenge has proven enormous.”

The image slowly drifted westward.

Dense forests stretched toward the horizon.

Towering mountain ranges interrupted vast plains.

Massive river systems cut through untouched wilderness.

Entire lakes reflected the afternoon sunlight.

None of them had existed five hours earlier.

”There are currently no indications that these regions were previously inhabited.”

The camera shifted again.

This time...

Stone.

Dark towers pierced the clouds.

Another image appeared.

A sprawling gothic manor nestled deep within an ancient forest.

Another.

A towering castle overlooking jagged mountains.

Another.

Elegant black stone architecture rising proudly from mist-covered hills.

Another.

A manor standing alone beside an enormous lake.

Every structure shared remarkably similar architecture.

Steep roofs.

Towering windows.

Dark stone.

Ornate gothic detailing.

The anchor smiled faintly.

”It appears...”

She glanced toward the images.

”...the vampires’ housing has finally arrived.”

A quiet laugh escaped someone off-camera.

She smiled a little wider before continuing.

”Joking aside...”

The images remained onscreen.

”These castles and manors are currently the only artificial structures discovered within the newly formed territories.”

Another aerial photograph appeared.

An enormous estate sat peacefully within miles upon miles of untouched woodland.

”No surrounding villages.”

”No roads leading to them.”

”No visible signs of recent human activity.”

Only the structures themselves.

Standing as though they had always belonged there.

The broadcast shifted again.

A transportation map appeared.

Large sections flashed red.

”The expansion of the planet has also severely disrupted transportation.”

Animated lines spread across the display.

Interstate highways.

Railroads.

Shipping routes.

Flight corridors.

”The infrastructure within cities appears largely unchanged.”

The map zoomed farther outward.

”However...”

Roads simply...

Stopped.

Railways terminated abruptly.

Bridges no longer reached the opposite side.

”What was previously a two-hour drive between neighboring communities may now involve hundreds of miles of newly formed wilderness.”

Another graphic illustrated the same phenomenon.

Cities remained connected internally.

Between cities...

Entire landscapes now existed.

Dense forests.

Mountain ranges.

Wetlands.

Rolling plains.

”We are also receiving reports that commercial aviation and freight transportation are being rerouted worldwide while new navigation data is produced.”

The anchor nodded toward another display.

”Authorities are urging patience as transportation networks are reassessed.”

Another image appeared.

Aerial footage captured an enormous highway.

Perfectly intact.

Then...

It simply ended.

Beyond the pavement stretched miles upon miles of untouched forest.

The footage lingered.

No construction.

No damage.

Just...

The road ending.

The anchor continued.

”Emergency restrictions have also begun taking effect.”

A government notice appeared onscreen.

AVOID ENTERING NEWLY FORMED TERRITORIES

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

”Federal, state, and local authorities are strongly advising the public to remain within established towns and cities until further notice.”

Another collection of photographs replaced the notice.

An elk.

Massive.

Standing nearly shoulder-high to a pickup truck.

A bear.

Its tracks measured almost twice the size of those typically recorded.

A wolf photographed beside a park ranger’s vehicle.

It dwarfed the hood.

”Biologists report that wildlife inhabiting these newly formed regions appears substantially larger and physically stronger than familiar species.”

She emphasized the next sentence carefully.

”These are not believed to be new species.”

Images continued cycling.

”They appear to be significantly larger variants of existing animals.”

More reports appeared.

”Authorities have also received isolated reports regarding unusual environmental conditions.”

The images changed once again.

A forest covered in thick mist despite clear skies overhead.

Another.

A mountain whose summit remained surrounded by dark clouds while nearby valleys basked in sunshine.

Another.

A valley where rain appeared confined to an unusually precise area.

”Scientists have not yet determined whether these observations represent genuine environmental phenomena...”

She glanced toward her notes.

”...or temporary atmospheric instability following the Second Divergence.”

The next sentence came slowly.

”Nevertheless...”

She looked directly into the camera.

”...some of these reports describe weather patterns and persistent environmental effects that currently defy conventional scientific explanation.”

The newsroom remained silent.

Another government advisory appeared.

DO NOT ENTER NEWLY FORFORMED REGIONS

REPORT UNUSUAL PHENOMENA TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES

WAIT FOR OFFICIAL SURVEYS

The anchor folded her hands once more.

”The public is strongly encouraged to remain within established communities.”

She spoke calmly.

”There is currently no indication that cities or towns themselves have undergone significant structural changes.”

Images of bustling streets appeared.

Traffic continued.

Restaurants remained open.

People walked sidewalks while staring upward at news broadcasts playing through storefront windows.

”At this time...”

She continued.

”...civilization remains safe.”

She allowed that reassurance to settle.

”But the world beyond it...”

Satellite imagery slowly filled the screens once more.

Vast.

Untouched.

Almost impossibly beautiful.

”...is largely unknown.”

The Earth rotated silently behind her.

Four times the surface area.

Millions of square miles that humanity had never seen.

Mountains without names.

Forests no map had ever recorded.

Rivers that had never before existed.

And castles...

Waiting quietly within them.

She offered one final reassuring smile.

”Emergency crews, scientists, survey teams, and governments around the world continue working together to understand the consequences of today’s Second Divergence.”

”As further information becomes available...”

She inclined her head slightly.

”...we will continue bringing you verified updates.”

The camera slowly pulled back.

Behind her, the enormous image of the transformed world continued turning in silence.

Larger than it had been that morning.

Beautiful.

Unfamiliar.

And, for the second time in only ten days...

Entirely changed.
