Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man

”Meimei.” Fearing she might get hurt, Jie Jingchen could only do as she wished, parking the bicycle to one side and resignedly following behind her.

The salesclerk watched the furtive Qin Mei, utterly confused. Jie Jingchen, on the other hand, looked mortified. ’Qin Mei really has no potential as a scout.’

”Miss, what are you looking to buy?” the salesclerk asked, stepping forward to block Qin Mei’s path.

Her view obstructed, Qin Mei, who had been crouching, immediately straightened up, her almond-shaped eyes narrowing slightly. ”I’m not buying anything.”

”Miss, if you’re not buying anything, please leave. Otherwise, I’ll call security,” the salesclerk threatened. She treated Qin Mei like a criminal, her gaze filled with undisguised contempt.

It finally dawned on Qin Mei what was happening, and she looked over at Jie Jingchen.

Jie Jingchen stepped forward to smooth things over. ”We’re buying.”

The salesclerk froze for a few seconds. ’This man is so handsome.’ Her cheeks instantly flushed red. She shyly watched Jie Jingchen and slowly approached him. ”Excuse me... excuse me, are you seeing anyone?”

Whoa! Qin Mei was dumbfounded. ’Women are supposed to be so conservative in this day and age, but this salesclerk is pretty forward-thinking!’

’Swooning over my man right in front of me is one thing, but to just come out and ask if he’s single? What is this salesclerk trying to do? Steal him from me?’

Qin Mei walked over and stood between the two of them, smiling sweetly at the salesclerk. ”He doesn’t have a girlfriend, but he does have a wife.”

”Huh?” The salesclerk’s shoulders slumped in disappointment. ’They came in together. If they weren’t a couple, they could have been siblings. I shamelessly asked if he was single just on the off chance they were brother and sister. But alas, it turns out I was wrong. They’re a married couple.’

Jie Jingchen’s mood lifted, a smile gracing his face as he looked at Qin Mei with eyes full of deep affection.

”Ma’am, being bold is a good thing, but being audacious isn’t always for the best.” Qin Mei took a step back, affectionately linking her arm with Jie Jingchen’s.

”What did you call me?” The salesclerk bristled, her eyes wide as she stared at Qin Mei.

’Ma’am! She actually called me ma’am, and I’m only in my early twenties.’

”Is something wrong, ma’am?” Qin Mei’s expression was harmless, but she deliberately emphasized the word ”ma’am,” making the salesclerk fume. As if that wasn’t enough, Qin Mei added, ”Ma’am, how many kids do you have?”

Asking how many kids she had was undoubtedly adding fuel to the fire. The salesclerk, now furious and embarrassed, was about to let loose a string of curses when the department store manager happened to walk by. Seeing the fuming salesclerk arguing with a customer, he hurried over to inquire. ”What’s going on?”

The moment the salesclerk saw the manager, she immediately started complaining. ”Manager, you’re just in time. This woman insulted me.”

The manager was a snob. The fabric of Qin Mei’s clothes and pants was high-quality, not something an ordinary person would buy. The material of the man’s clothes, whose arm she was holding, surprised him even more. That kind of fabric was only available in Xiangjiang, and they didn’t have it here yet. ’Could it be...’

”You’re the manager?” Jie Jingchen narrowed his eyes, his tone deep, cold, and amused.

”Yes, yes, I’m the manager of the department store. And you are...?” The manager forced a smile, bowing and scraping. He couldn’t figure out Jie Jingchen’s identity, so he decided that following the principle of receiving a superior would be the safest bet.

”Manager, this salesclerk was hitting on my man. How do you think this should be handled?” Qin Mei’s expression was unreadable, her tone lukewarm.

’She really hated the way the salesclerk looked down on people, especially since she was also coveting Jie Jingchen’s good looks.’

The manager swallowed hard a few times, then shot a sharp glare at the salesclerk, who was so frightened she immediately denied it. ”Manager, she’s framing me! I didn’t do it.”

’I just asked the man if he was seeing anyone. Seduction is too serious of an accusation.’

”Did she hit on you or not?” Qin Mei asked Jie Jingchen, holding back a laugh and feigning seriousness.

Jie Jingchen looked at her with eyes full of adoration. Whatever his wife said, goes. He uttered three words without a hint of guilt. ”Yes, she did.”

”You’re lying!” the salesclerk shrieked hysterically, causing a commotion. People started casting curious glances their way. With the manager present, the other salesclerks were curious but didn’t dare approach. The customers, however, had no such qualms and began to close in.

Seeing the commotion they were causing, Qin Mei worried it would attract Shen Qing’s attention, which would make the situation awkward.

”Let’s go, quick,” Qin Mei whispered to Jie Jingchen, pulling on him to leave.

”Wait a second,” Jie Jingchen said, patting the small hand that was linked through his arm. He looked at the manager, his gaze darkening and radiating an intimidating chill. ”She isn’t suited to work here.”

The manager, quick on the uptake, immediately said, ”I understand.”

Before the customers could get too close, Jie Jingchen led Qin Mei away.
