Within the ACG industry, the announcement of a new project by a creator of Haruto’s caliber was an earthquake. For his die-hard fans, the news that a new series was coming so soon after the conclusion of his previous hit was met with huge support.

Across every major forum, social media platform, and fan forum, enthusiasts were celebrating, spontaneously organizing massive promotional campaigns. However, among Haruto’s peers, the seasoned veterans and rising stars within the competitive world of manga, the reaction was far more nuanced and tinged with skepticism.

Typically, when a mangaka of Haruto’s elite status finishes a long-running masterpiece, they take a significant hiatus. It is standard practice to step away for a year or two of reflection to let the creative well refill.

”Even if you’re a literal monster of productivity like Haruto,” one veteran artist remarked during a private gathering, ”and even if your drafting speed is legendary, you still need time to breathe. If you want to produce a work that maintains a high standard of quality, a few months of rest is the bare minimum. How is it possible that the ink on the final Chapter of Initial D is barely dry, and he’s already announcing a brand-new series?”

The pacing seemed frantic.

It begged the question: what was really going on behind the scenes?

”Do you think he’s being coerced by the editorial department at Prime Manga?” a young assistant asked.

”That doesn’t make sense. Haruto is famous for not signing long-term exclusive contracts. Prime Manga shouldn’t have any leverage to force his hand like that.”

”Maybe it’s just a case of a young man being too soft-hearted?” someone else suggested. ”Perhaps he couldn’t say no to the desperate pleas of a publishing house he’s worked with for so long, and he made a rash decision?”

This theory gained traction quickly. Everyone in the industry knew just how vital Initial D had become to Prime Manga’s bottom line. Since its debut, the series had single-handedly boosted the circulation of their flagship weekly magazine by millions of copies. But everyone knew that a massive portion of those readers were buying the magazine only for Haruto’s work. If Initial D ended without a massive successor, the magazine’s sales would likely plummet.

Under that kind of pressure, it wasn’t hard to imagine a young creator cracking and agreeing to start a new series far too early.

”If that’s the case, then this new project is on very shaky ground. If he rushes and the story flops, he’s going to damage his reputation. It’s a classic case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.”

”Honestly, who cares? I’ve been tired of him for a while now. He dips his toes into animation, then manga, then light novels, and he acts like he’s a god in all of them. Maybe this is the reality check he needs. Let him fail for once.”

”I think you guys are just indulging in some pathetic wishful thinking. This ’he’s rushing and he’s going to fail’ narrative is something I’ve heard several times over the last few years. Every single time Haruto starts something new, the same bitter crowd says he’s overextended. Can’t you guys come up with a new script?”

”Exactly. On the surface, this looks like a serious analysis of industry trends, but all I see is a bunch of people who are dying of jealousy. You’re fantasizing about his failure because you can’t handle his talent.”

”You ’Haruto stans’ need to pipe down. I’ve been in this business for decades. I refuse to believe that someone can wrap up a massive hit and jump immediately into a new series without the quality suffering. I’ve seen countless mangaka try that, and it never ends well. Not once.”

Similar scenes were playing out across countless professional networking groups. Success naturally breeds envy, and there was a vocal contingent of the industry that desperately wanted to see Haruto’s new work crash and burn.

The source of their resentment wasn’t just his success; it was his attitude toward it. What hurt them more than the fact that Haruto could earn hundreds of millions of yen a year was the ease with which he walked away from it. To these struggling creators, Initial D was a golden goose that they would have milked for decades.

”The kid is only twenty years old. Does he even understand the value of what he’s throwing away? Most people wouldn’t earn in ten lifetimes what that series makes in a single year. And he just ends it? He claims he ’can’t create a plot that satisfies him anymore’ and just moves on? Even if the story was getting stale, he could have just dragged it out for another year or two. He’s just throwing it all away.”

To these ”adults,” Haruto’s commitment to artistic integrity and his refusal to ”pad” his work felt like a insult. They viewed his high-minded approach as a waste of resources. While the professionals bickered, the promotional engine at Prime Manga was firing on all cylinders. Over several days, news that Haruto’s new work would be unveiled in the upcoming issue saturated the entire ACG industry.

Fans of his anime and light novels were drawn in as well. Not everyone who followed Haruto was a fan of street racing; many had skipped Initial D simply because the subject matter didn’t appeal to them. As long as the theme was engaging and the plot was fresh, they were more than willing to become dedicated manga fans.

Finally, the wait ended in mid-October when the latest issue of the Prime Manga magazine hit the shelves. The final Chapter of Initial D contained several subtle changes. Being the grand finale, Haruto felt an obligation to provide a sense of closure.

For instance, he checked in on Natsuki, who had broken up with the protagonist, Takumi.

In this final Chapter, it was made clear that she had turned her life around, working a legitimate part-time job as a high school student with firm plans to enter a good university. As for Iketani and Mako, the original had teased an ambiguous connection. However, Haruto decided to be more decisive. He knew the original author’s penchant for bittersweet endings, and he chose to provide a more definitive break. In this version of the finale, he used a brief bit of narration to outline their separate paths, effectively cutting off the fans’ lingering hopes for a romantic reunion.

The final panels of the manga focused on the legendary Mt. Akina. Takumi, who had become effectively invincible on his home turf, finally accepted Ryosuke’s invitation. He joined the elite racing team, and the two most talented drivers of the younger generation officially combined their skills to begin ”Project D.”

It wasn’t so much an ending as it was a new beginning, a finale that left the fans with infinite room for imagination. Overall, while it might not have been a fairytale ending, it was a solid, respectful conclusion.

As many readers reached the last page and saw those final words, Initial D: The End, they felt a sense of loss. A certain emptiness settled in their chests.

Then, almost reflexively, they turned the page.

What met their eyes was a stunning, full-color spread. The composition was exquisite, featuring a cast of characters that practically leaped off the page.

Hunter x Hunter.

The fans were instantly jolted into a state of high alert.

This was it, the promotional poster for Haruto’s new masterpiece. The poster featured seventeen distinct characters. Some were shown only in profile, others were mere silhouettes looking back over their shoulders, and some didn’t appear to be human at all.

Despite being just a single promotional poster, the veteran otaku didn’t need a written explanation to identify the genre.

By noon that same day, the internet was ablaze with speculation.

”A battle shonen? Seriously?”

”Holy crap! Haruto is actually tackling a action series?”

”Wait, so he’s completely moving away from the racing genre? I was really hoping for more of that style!”

”Honestly, even for a genius like him, trying to do another racing manga right now would be suicide. It would never live up to Initial D. But a battle manga? That’s a whole different beast. That market is incredibly crowded.”

”You’re not kidding. Right now, nearly forty percent of the titles on the market fall into that category. This is the most cutthroat genre in the entire industry.”

”Wait, are you guys actually worried that he’s going to fail?”

”It’s not that we don’t have faith in him. It’s just that the history of manga is littered with absolute legends in this genre. Given Haruto’s current status, his new work is going to be measured against the greatest masterpieces in history. The pressure must be astronomical.”

”Exactly. Initial D is undisputed as the number one racing manga ever made, but there aren’t that many racing manga to begin with. Battle manga? That’s where the real monsters live.”

”Look, let’s just stop doubting him. He’s just starting a new series. You guys are talking as if it’s a failure if he doesn’t immediately dethrone the ’Greatest of All Time.’ Isn’t that being a little too harsh on him?”

”Harsh? Let’s look at the facts. Haruto is the creator of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which holds the record for average BD sales per volume. He also created Rebellion. In the light novel world, Sword Art Online is currently sitting at eighth place on the all-time sales-per-volume list. And in manga, Initial D is currently ninth.”

”When you put it that way... it’s actually kind of terrifying.”

”In the animation field, his work is already in a league of its own. In manga, once the final volumes of Initial D are released, it’s expected to become the seventh highest-selling manga in history. And Sword Art Online is just a juggernaut. At this point, if his new manga doesn’t break into the top five of all time, people are going to view it as a disappointment. We don’t just expect him to maintain his level; we expect him to transcend it.”

”Are you guys joking? The top five? The gatekeeper for fifth place is The Flame King, a battle shonen that ended twelve years ago with an average of 24.7 million copies per volume! You’re saying if he doesn’t beat The Flame King, he’s a failure?”

”That’s just the reality of his position. With the fan base he’s built across three different mediums, that’s the bar he has to clear.”

”I’ve been a fan since Ao Haru Ride four years ago. I always knew he was famous, but seeing the numbers laid out like that... it’s insane. He’s already conquered the anime world. He’s within striking distance in the manga world. And SAO still has a chance to take the top spot in light novels. Think about it: what if Hunter x Hunter is actually a masterpiece? What if it reaches number one in manga, and SAO eventually reaches number one in novels?”

”I didn’t even dare to think it, but you’re right. It’s not just possible, it’s actually plausible. We see how he works now. If he keeps his creative edge and maintains the quality, SAO has a real shot at the top. And if Hunter x Hunter explodes...”

”If that happens, he will be the undisputed greatest creator in the history. If those three fields are all topped by Haruto’s works, I’d call him the greatest of all time.”

”Don’t jinx it! Don’t hype it up so much that we kill it! If SAO falls off or if the Hunter x Hunter debut is a dud, we’re all going to look like idiots.”

The fan base was buzzing with intensity. From a single promotional poster, they had extrapolated an entire career trajectory, debating whether Haruto could achieve a ”Triple Crown” of industry dominance. This was the level of expectation he now carried.

At the Prime Manga offices, everyone felt that same pressure. They knew that if Hunter x Hunter was a hit of that magnitude, Prime Manga would finally ascend to the top of the publishing world. But they also knew that if it failed, the millions of fans who had come for Initial D would vanish almost overnight. The following day, Prime Manga officially announced the serialization date on their website. At the end of October, in the final issue of the month, the first Chapter of Haruto’s Hunter x Hunter would debut with a massive, full-color lead feature.

The news spread like wildfire.

Major news outlets and entertainment blogs didn’t even wait for Prime Manga to pay for promotion; they scrambled to cover the story because they knew ”Haruto” was a guaranteed traffic driver. He had reached a point where he didn’t need the media; the media needed him.

Meanwhile, back at his company, Haruto sat quietly, scrolling through the comments.

”So, are you feeling the heat?” Yukino asked, walking up behind him with a playful smile. ”The entire industry is saying that if your new manga doesn’t crack the top five of all time, it’s a flop. They’re basically demanding that you become the number one mangaka in history.”

She leaned in closer, looking at his calm expression. ”Does that actually put any pressure on you?”

”Pressure? Why would it?” Haruto looked up at her, reaching out to gently pinch her soft, pale cheek.

”I don’t need the fans to guess for me. Before I even decided to serialize Hunter x Hunter, that was exactly what I was aiming for.”
