Shinrabansho: Myriad Souls

We eventually looped back toward the park entrance, the path narrowing again as the trees thinned and the sound of traffic crept back in. The air felt warmer here, the quiet romance of the deeper paths giving way to the ordinary hum of the city, but the feeling between us didn’t fade with it.

My bike waited where we’d left it, still locked neatly at the rack. I reached for my keys automatically, then paused when Aoi stepped closer.

“I’ll pedal this time,” Aoi said.

I blinked. “Are you sure?”

She grinned. “You pedal all the time and I always take it easy. It’s my turn to do the work.”

Something in her tone, confident and playful, made my chest flutter. I unlocked the bike and stepped aside, watching her swing a leg over. When she straightened, she glanced back at me, expectant.

“Well?” she teased. “Are you coming, or am I riding off alone?”

“I just like watching you as you move.” I flushed as I hurried, stepping onto the rear bolts without hesitation, the motion feeling natural now, almost like using muscle memory, trusting my body. I placed my hands where they made the most sense, resting them on her shoulders, then sliding around her upper chest for balance. Close enough to feel her warmth. Close enough to feel the steady rise and fall of her breathing beneath my palms.

“I see!” She shifted slightly, settling us both, and then pushed off.

The city unfolded around us as we pedaled away from the park. Intersections came and went with a steady rhythm, a medley of traffic lights, musical crosswalks, the low rumble of buses, the chatter of pedestrians. Each time we stopped, I hopped down easily, then climbed back up when the light changed, my hands returning to her without a second thought.

I couldn’t resist leaning against her. I didn’t have to, but I wanted to. I wanted to press against her as much as I could.

I didn’t hesitate anymore.

The old me would have flustered at expressing myself like this. I would have second-guessed every movement.

At one stop, as we waited for the signal to change, she glanced back at me.

“How are you doing, Sumire-chan?”

“I’m fine just like this,” I said softly. “I like riding like this too.”

Her lips curved, just a little. “I like riding your bike this way too.” She winked. “Make sure you hold on tightly.”

She took the hand I had resting against her upper chest and guided it down… directly onto her breast.

Soft.

My vision went hazy. My brain short-circuited.

“O-okay… I-I… if you say so…”

My skinship lessons hadn’t prepared me for this. My face was too pink.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” Aoi said gently, her voice musical.

“I… I… I… do,” I stammered.

I’d hoped that I would get even closer to her, but I hadn’t truly been prepared.

When we started moving again, I leaned in closer, my chest pressed firmly against her back. The wind tugged at my skirt and I didn’t care if anyone got a peek. I needed Aoi-chan to anchor me, otherwise I might float off. My cheek rested against her shoulder.

The contact sent a quiet thrill through me—

DOKI-DOKI

She was so steady. So warm. Like this, it wasn’t overwhelming.

I was alive.

Is this how she feels too?

My thoughts drifted to what she’d said the night before, her gaze lifted to the sky, her voice strangely soft.

Living.

She must be worried about the future.

I hadn’t started worrying yet. We still had two more years of high school, finishing the current and then our third.

What would I do someday?

Becoming an idol like Mom suggested? Maybe…

…a detective?

Where did that even come from? I frowned and shook my head.

It was still a bit too early for questions like that. I needed to stay here in this moment… with Aoi-chan.

She mattered more than anything else.

I could feel the strength in her shoulders under my hands, and the softness too. Soft or not, she was a rock I could cling to. The subtle adjustments of her body as she pedaled kept us balanced.

She noticed everything.

“You’ve started holding me tighter,” she murmured, half-smiling, her cheeks faintly flushed.

“Is that bad?”

“No.” Her voice dropped just a fraction. “It’s exactly what I want right now.”

DOKI-DOKI… BADUMP

I swallowed and tightened my grip just a little more.

Because she told me to.

…Because I wanted to.

The shopping center came into view after a while, a wide building of glass and pale stone, banners fluttering near the entrance advertising seasonal sales and limited-time exhibits. We rolled into the bike parking area near the front, locking up among rows of other bikes, the front tire clicking softly into place.

Inside, the mall was cool and bright, air-conditioned and bustling. The scent of popcorn drifted from somewhere deeper in, mingling with perfume from a nearby cosmetics kiosk. Escalators hummed. Laughter echoed faintly from above.

We walked side by side, close enough that our arms brushed with every step.

The theater sat tucked into one corner of the mall, understated compared to the flashy multiplexes, posters in glass cases, a simple marquee advertising rotating anime features and revival screenings. The kind of place that felt lovingly maintained, like it was someone’s passion project.

My heart skipped a little as I saw the poster for the movie we’d planned to see.

We stepped up to the counter.

“I’ll pay,” I said quickly. “It was my idea.”

Aoi turned to me, surprised. “Are you sure? You don’t work yet. Your money’s probably precious.”

I met her eyes, heat blooming in my cheeks, but I didn’t look away. “You’re more precious to me.”

For a second, she just stared at me.

Then she sighed, smiling helplessly. “Fine. But I’m buying the ramen later. And our drinks for the movie.”

“Okay,” I said, relieved, and excited. “I’ll still have enough to buy you a present later.”

Her ears turned faintly pink.

We took our tickets and stepped inside, the lobby dimmer and quieter. Posters lined the walls, faded just enough to feel nostalgic. The carpet muffled our footsteps as we moved toward our screen.

Inside the theater, the lights were low and the room was small, cozy. We chose seats near the middle. When we sat, our arms touched immediately, neither of us shifting away.

As the lights dimmed further and the opening music began, Aoi leaned in slightly. Our shoulders pressed together, heat pooling where we touched. I could feel her presence at my side.

I sipped my drink as the movie started and smiled at Aoi, rubbing my shoulder against her right back.

Ocean water crashed against rocks in the surf as the commercials ended with the studio name flashing on the screen.

Then the movie started.

The screen flashed pink, then white—an explosive wash of color that snapped the theater into silence. A dramatic swell of music filled the room, all soaring strings and pounding rhythm, the kind that made your chest tighten before you even knew why.

Onscreen, the city shattered into motion.

Two girls crossed paths in the halls of their middle school.

They were nothing alike.

One was usually on the tennis courts, her movements skillful, every swing accurate, every step she took measured. Even when she wasn’t holding a racket, that same focus clung to her, with a tight posture, her eyes always forward.

The other was the student council president. She moved through the school with supreme grace, her expression usually composed, her uniform immaculate. Teachers straightened whenever she passed. Students parted instinctively for her, whispers following in her wake.

The two weren’t enemies, not exactly.

But whenever they passed each other in the hallways, something in the air shifted.

Their gazes slid away too quickly. Their shoulders stiffened. There was a faint tension between them, subtle but unmistakable, like a thread pulled too tight was vibrating between them.

I couldn’t help wondering why it was like that.

Why did the sight of each other seem to irritate them so much?

Why it looked less like dislike… and more like something unresolved between them, pressing just beneath the surface.

You could feel it in every exchange, their clipped dialogue, their narrowed eyes.

One fateful night their mascots came to them separately, telling them that they were magical girls. They finally appeared in a burst of sparkles and noise, floating, shrieking encouragement and about their destiny in equal measure. Naturally, both girls recoiled in horror.

“No way!”

“Absolutely not!”

But they inevitably accepted their mantles. They were forced into it by a monster attack, bound by a sense of duty and responsibility.

Their outfits flared into existence in ribbons of light… sleek, modern, more combat-ready than frilly. Bare legs braced wide. Gloves clenched. Their first fight wasn’t elegant.

Their dislike for each other never stopped. They recognized each other at a glance, as though whatever protected magical girls from being recognized didn’t apply when they looked at each other.

Their blows were thrown a little harder than necessary when they faced the first monster.

The anime was surprisingly physical. I was shocked. How could something so cute be as physical as sentai?

They punched. They kicked. Shockwaves rippled across the ground with every impact. One launched herself forward in a flying heel drop that cracked concrete. The other countered with a spinning backfist that sent the monster skidding across the street in a spray of sparks.

I felt my pulse pick up.

They fought like martial artists… like fighters who trusted their bodies more than their magic. The choreography was tight and vicious and beautiful in that way only motion could be.

But as strong as they were, there was a problem… they just couldn’t work together.

They collided mid-air and missed cues and even interrupted each other’s attacks. At one point, they outright argued in the middle of a fight, their backs turned to their enemy as they faced off against each other, shouting accusations while the monster loomed behind them.

I shifted in my seat, sucked in despite myself.

“Idiot!” one shouted.

“Stop getting in my way, clumsy!”

“Surely you can think better than that!”

“Can’t you run without tripping on your own feet?!”

What?!

They naturally beat the monster, despite their lack of an ability to work together, but then the general appeared and mocked and overwhelmed them. A building burned and people screamed.

The general escaped, laughing, promising to steal dreams one by one.

“You are no threat to our plans.”

Beside me, Aoi let out a soft, amused breath. I felt something warm brush my ear.

She had leaned her head over, resting it lightly against my shoulder as she watched the screen, feeling close enough that I felt her warmth against my side. The theatre was cool enough that I needed that contact. Her hair tickled my ear each time she shifted.

I blushed, suddenly very aware of how little space there was between us.

As the movie unfolded, the friction changed, not just on the screen, but between us too. The quiet tension deepened, settling into what felt heavier, slower and more charged in a way that had nothing to do with the plot.

Training scenes followed their failure. They were reluctant, tense and full of sparks. The two were forced to fight side by side and it showed how much it grated on them. Whenever one put a hand on the other’s shoulder, the hands were slapped away. As they trained, glances lingered too long. Accidental touches that had been slapped away lingered a second longer than if normal.

The fanservice crept in naturally. A stumble. A sharp intake of breath. One girl catching the other too late… too close… landing straddled over her giving the other a view of what was under her skirt, their faces ending up inches apart when they tripped into each other, both flushed, both breathing hard.

I swallowed, heat rushing to my cheeks despite myself. I couldn’t stop smiling.

Then came the moment when they went into battle after their intense training.

One of them hesitated before the fight, her voice cracking. She admitted, quietly and fiercely, that she was terrified of losing everything. That she didn’t want to fight alone anymore.

The other looked at her like she’d been struck.

The music softened.

I felt my throat tighten and I sniffled.

That was when I realized my vision had gone blurry.

Aoi’s hand slid over mine, warm and solid, her fingers clasping gently around my knuckles. She didn’t say anything at first. Just stayed there.

“…Don’t cry,” she whispered, smiling faintly without looking away from the screen. “It’s not that great, the twist I mean. Most everyone carries these kinds of fears.”

I sniffled anyway, pressing my lips together, embarrassed and unashamed at the same time.

“Yeah… there are things that I don’t want to lose too,” I mumbled, wiping the tears from my cheeks.

Then the fall came.

A misunderstanding… The breakup. Harsh words were thrown at each other in the aftermath of another failed fight. One girl walked away, her shoulders rigid, refusing to turn back.

I couldn’t stop more tears from falling then. They slipped down quietly, hot and sudden.

Aoi squeezed my hand once, firmly.

“They’ll figure it out,” she murmured.

Some time later, they did.

The final act hit like a storm.

The dream-stealing villain rose over a field of sleeping people, shadows pouring from his hands like smoke. The city fell silent. The girls reunited in a wordless exchange… just exchanging a look, breathing and nodding with determination.

They fought together.

And at this point, surprisingly well!

Every kick flowed into the other’s punch. They launched each other into the air, caught each other mid-fall. One shouted the other’s name as she leapt into danger without hesitation.

The final blow came as they clasped hands, light flaring between them, their combined power tearing through the darkness in a roar of color and sound.

When it was over, the mascots drifted upward, waving tearful goodbyes before shooting into the sky like falling stars.

The girls stood alone in a field of grass, their powers gone, their hands still clasped.

They looked at each other.

And leaned in towards each other…

And then the screen cut to white.

The credits rolled.

When the lights slowly came back up, my emotions felt turbulent and tender, like something had been loosened inside my chest. I exhaled softly, blinking, my hand still warm where Aoi’s held it and my shoulder feeling just as warm.

Halfway through that moment, I realized Aoi wasn’t watching the screen anymore.

She was watching me.

“…What?” I whispered.

“Nothing,” she murmured. “Just… you’re really touched.”

I smiled, my gaze still fixed on the fading credits. “The movie was very good.” I wiped at my eyes with both hands, embarrassed by how moist they felt.

She nodded, but she didn’t look away right away.

Instead, she leaned in and licked my cheek.

I sucked in a sharp breath.

“If you don’t stop crying,” Aoi said quietly, an impish warmth in her voice, “I’ll have to keep licking until they’re all gone.”

She did it again!

I gasped, my face burning, the last of the tears evaporating in an instant as I melted down completely.

What she did was… extremely effective.

DOKI-DOKI

After a little while when the lights came on, Aoi stretched, then glanced at me.

“You hungry?”

“Yeah,” I said. “But… weren’t we going to shop first?”

She chuckled. “Okay. I’m feeling kind of hungry after all those tear appetizers.” She winked at me. “But if you want, we can wait a little longer.”

I blushed and leaned against her for an extra few minutes.

We stood, our fingers touching and clasping as we gathered ourselves, then walked back out into the mall together, heading through the mall, with me looking for what I needed. We spotted a ramen bar with a big line on the way, which meant it was probably very good. I spotted a bookstore and assorted stores.

I looked forward to the next part of our special day, my heart still humming softly from the warmth of her beside me and the knowledge that somewhere among all those stores was the ribbon that I wanted to give her.

A gift that meant us.
