Shinrabansho: Myriad Souls

We climbed onto my bike like we always did, me pedalling, my hands on the grips, Aoi-chan stepping onto the back bolts, her weight settling in behind me.

As I pushed off, I glanced back once.

Riko managed to smile but gazed at Aoi consideringly.

Yuna’s was softer, thoughtful.

Haru stared like he was trying to burn the image of us into his brain.

Then the street carried us away, the morning air cool against my cheeks, and Aoi-chan leaned in close enough that her breath warmed my ear.

“Don’t overthink it,” she murmured.

I laughed shakily. “I can’t promise that I’ll be able to calm down.”

Aoi-chan’s arms tightened around my chest, just a little.

“Then I’ll remind you,” she said.

And we rode into our date. It felt like the day had always been waiting for us.

The park opened up around us like a held breath finally let go.

The air was warm without being heavy, brushing against my skin in a way that made me suddenly acutely aware of my body. And of her presence behind me, riding the bolts.

This wasn’t training. Nor was it the school rooftop.

We wheeled my bike up to the rack near the entrance. I locked it in place, double-checking out of habit, then turned back just in time to see Aoi stretching her arms overhead like she was loosening up before a match.

Her shirt lifted just enough with the motion to show her toned stomach, smooth and sun warmed. The stretch pulled her frame taut, confident, athletic and unguarded in the way she always was when she forgot there were others around to see her.

Wide lawns stretched beneath a bright summer sky, the grass worn by many picnics and footsteps. Tall trees arched overhead, their leaves layered in greens and golds, sunlight breaking through in shifting patches that dappled the paths. Somewhere deeper in the park, water babbled… Maybe fountains, or a stream trickling lazily through stones.

She caught me looking and smirked.

“What?”

“N-nothing,” I said quickly, heat blooming in my cheeks.

DOKI

My heart kicked hard against my ribs, like it wanted her to know exactly where my attention had gone.

She laughed softly and stepped closer, feeling relaxed. Today she felt… different. Not guarded like at school. Not focused like during training me.

Just the real and raw Aoi.

Relaxed and bright.

She was close enough that I could smell her rose bodywash again.

She slipped her arm through mine and pressed in, lacing her fingers between my own. When she shifted her weight, the warmth of her body brushed faintly against my side. Casual, unselfconscious and devastating.

People moved through the park all around us. Couples walking hand in hand. Families corralling their kids toward shaded benches. Joggers threading past with steady breathing and quiet determination. A cluster of elderly women lingered near the gate, their wide hats and parasols bobbing as they chatted.

The park felt alive.

And somehow, that made every small touch feel more poignant.

More dangerous.

More wanted.

We started down the main path together, our shoulders brushing. For a while, neither of us spoke. The sound of our footsteps and the low murmur of the park filled the space instead.

Each time our arms grazed, it sent a spark straight up my spine.

It wasn’t an accident.

Not for either of us.

“I keep thinking about Shirasuna,” I said finally.

Aoi glanced at me. “Yeah? Which parts?” she asked easily. “The bath? The beach? That grotto?”

“Ah… well…” I blushed. “The futons mostly. The way the ocean sounded at night when we lay together. You surprised me.”

I couldn’t help thinking about waking up and realizing she’d crawled into bed with me while I slept… how close she’d been, how the heat between us had felt in that narrow space.

“I do love to surprise you,” Aoi said, winking.

I thought of the Garigari-kuns we had at the store on the way from school that evening a week ago, my face heating again.

And then I thought of how she’d disappeared so quickly Tuesday night when I brought her home.

“Your surprises are hard to keep up with.”

“Good,” Aoi grinned.

“Um… that night that you showed me where you live…” I hesitated. “You left so fast. I saved the spot on my phone, but I wanted to ask what your apartment number was.”

She looked at me for a long moment, smiling.

“I suppose you’re planning to visit me,” she said, amused.

“Sort of,” I admitted, my cheeks warm. “It’s only fair. You’ve seen my house now.”

“True,” she said lightly. “But I haven’t seen your bedroom yet.”

She giggled.

I very nearly short-circuited.

It took a moment for me to remember how to breathe.

“So… what’s the apartment number?” I pressed, licking my dry lips. “...Just in case.”

“I’ll tell you,” Aoi said, clasping her hands behind her back as she walked, smiling at me sideways.

“When I’m ready.”

No fair…

Her ears pinked just a little.

“I wonder what you’re thinking about…”

I blushed and looked away. “I just… felt the closest to you at Shirasuna.”

She slowed, just a fraction. “Mm. It was almost like we were newlyweds, right?”

I nodded, heat blooming in my cheeks.

It really did feel like that.

We passed beneath a long row of trees where the light shifted cooler, greener. Leaves rustling overhead, overlapping in soft whispers. Somewhere nearby, a wind chime rang, sounding light, distant, almost shy.

“I didn’t think about dating at all,” Aoi said after a moment.

I glanced at her. “You didn’t? Shouldn’t every girl dream about going on a date with the one they love someday?”

“... Good point… But back then,” she said, smiling faintly, “I had other priorities.”

“Why?” I asked.

She scratched the back of her neck, her gaze fixed ahead. “I was mostly focused on training you. Making you stronger. Making sure you’d be okay… That’s still my primary goal…” She looked away.

Her honesty settled in my chest, feeling warm, but heavy, not painful, but deep.

“If that’s true,” I said softly, “then why did you kiss me on the rooftop that day…?”

I swallowed. “You flipped my world upside down.”

She stopped.

I took one more step before realizing she hadn’t followed, then turned back. For a heartbeat, she just looked at me… her eyes steady, her expression unreadable.

The silence stretched between us, feeling thick and intimate.

Like the breath right before a touch finally lands.

Then she shrugged, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Who knows?”

I laughed under my breath. “That’s not an acceptable answer, Aoi.”

“...Maybe not,” she said lightly. “But it’s the only honest one I have right now.”

I hesitated, then asked, “Does that mean… it could’ve been anyone that day? Even though we were always together? Would you have kissed Riko-chan? Or Yuna-chan?”

Aoi shook her head, more firmly this time. “Maybe… But no.”

She met my eyes. “You’re special. Very special.”

DOKI—DOKI…

Her gaze dipped, just briefly, to my lips before she turned away again.

We started walking once more, closer now. Our arms brushed again.

The path curved, opening into a wide clearing where ducks clustered at the water’s edge. Children laughed as they tossed pieces of bread, ignoring the sign warning them not to. The ducks, unsurprisingly, didn’t care about rules that deprived them of bread morsels.

“Oh—!” Aoi’s eyes lit up. “Ducks.”

Before I could say anything, she jogged ahead and dropped into a crouch near the water, her energy bright and unguarded again.

The movement made her cut-off shorts cling to her hips and thighs as she bent, the fabric stretching over the curves of her bottom in a way that made my breath hitch.

BADUMP

One of the ducks waddled closer, bold as anything. Aoi froze, then slowly reached out.

The duck allowed it, just for a second. A light brush of her fingers against its soft feathers.

Aoi’s face lit up, unguarded and bright.

Sunlight caught along her legs, her shoulders, the easy confidence in her posture. I realized, dimly, that I was staring again.

Not at the duck.

Then the duck quacked indignantly and hustled away.

Aoi glanced back at me over her shoulder, amusement dancing in her eyes.

She’d noticed my expression.

My cheeks were already burning.

“I wish I had some bread,” she said lightly. “Then they might come closer and longer.”

“Then you’d get mobbed,” I replied.

“Worth it.” Aoi giggled.

She smiled at me then, slow and knowing, just a little teasing. like she was daring me to keep looking. Her back was still turned.

Is she…

DOKI—DOKI… BADUMP.

The sight of her made me feel faint, my lips feeling dry.

So beautiful…

She laughed and stood, turning back toward me, breaking the spell.

When she rejoined me, her eyes were bright, and there was energy buzzing between us. We walked along the water together, our reflections rippling across the surface… trees, sky, broken pieces of cloud.

After a moment, without looking at me, Aoi reached out.

Her fingers brushed mine.

Electricity shot straight through me, feeling sharp and urgent.

I hesitated for just a heartbeat.

Then I laced my fingers with hers.

Her grip tightened slightly warm and sure in my hand, her thumb pressing once against my knuckles.

We walked like that for a while, our hands joined, neither of us commenting on it. The world felt narrower and sharper at the same time. Every sensation landed deeper. The warmth of her palm, the sound of her breathing, the soft rhythm we’d fallen into together.

“I don’t regret waiting,” she said suddenly.

I squeezed her hand. “For what?”

“The right moment.” She winked.

I smiled, unsure what she meant by that, but I was fine with her not explaining.

We passed beneath a canopy of flowering trees where pale blossoms drifted down like soft snow. A few caught in Aoi’s hair, adorning it better than any ribbon I’d thought about buying her later. For a fleeting second, she looked unreal, like some fair elven maiden who’d wandered into our world.

I was acutely aware of how close she was. Her presence at my side felt natural. Inevitable. Like this was how things were supposed to be forever.

I reached up and caught a blossom before it fell, holding it between my fingers.

Without any hesitation, I gently tucked it into her hair.

She leaned in without thinking, her forehead brushing mine.

Her breath ghosted across my lips. She was so close it made my pulse stutter.

Every time she kissed me felt spontaneous. Unplanned. I’d come to crave these moments, the way she escalated without warning, without doubt. I was hopelessly addicted to her.

That was all the invitation either of us needed.

We kissed, and the world fell away.

It might have been quicker than the one on the school rooftop, but it was gentler. Unhurried. Not hidden from anyone’s eyes. We weren’t hiding from the world, and we weren’t proving anything to it. It felt like something stolen and precious, suspended among falling petals and birdsong.

Her lips were warm. They fit mine like they always had, like they always would. The contact sent a slow, spreading heat through me that lingered even after we finally pulled back.

When we parted, she rested her forehead against mine.

My vision swam. I couldn’t stop my hands from tracing along her curves.

“You okay?” Aoi-chan asked softly, her breathing still uneven.

“More than okay,” I whispered. “I love you.”

She stiffened… and then softened in the same breath.

“I’ve been desperate before,” she said quietly. “I’ve done things I hated. Things that hurt in ways I don’t even know how to explain…”

My heart slammed hard enough to steal my breath.

“What do you mean?”

…

“Do… do you not—” I faltered.

“Baka.” Aoi lifted her gaze to mine, steady and fierce. “This isn’t one of those times. I have no regrets.” Her hand pressed to my cheek. “Your presence… your love—they heal me.” Her voice wavered just slightly and her eyes moistened. “I love you.”

She pulled me forward into another kiss—deeper, more insistent than ever.

I melted.

The world spun, petals blurring into color and light as everything inside me lifted, weightless.

When the kiss finally broke, my voice came out softer than I meant to. Breathless.

We lingered like that for another second, aware now of the murmur of voices around us, of footsteps and laughter and life resuming. None of it mattered. But as the moment thinned, we stepped apart—still holding hands, still smiling, still close.

Even though we were both girls, I wanted to spend my life with Aoi-chan. I thought about the beach again. The hostel. That narrow futon. The way she’d breathed beside me in the dark. How everything back then had felt terrifying and right all at once.

This felt just like that.

Aoi squeezed my hand again, and I squeezed back, matching her step for step as the path carried us deeper into the park.

It wouldn’t generate Sumire riding on the bolts so I went with this!

I love this one the most!
