Awakening a 10,000x Skill Proficiency Multiplier in the Apocalypse

”And I’m about to kick it down,” Sebastian stated, casually slipping his single rendered hand into his coat pocket. ”Unless you came down here to hand over the administrative keys voluntarily.”

The glowing avatar didn’t react to the threat. It just tilted its featureless head.

”The Ethereal Plane is a mechanism of efficiency,” Architect Prime stated. ”Conflict breeds evolution. We harvest the strong to sustain the grand architecture of the multiverse. But occasionally, a variable arises that threatens the stability of the entire grid. You are that variable, Sebastian.”

Gwen’s eyes widened. ”It knows your real name.”

”It read my file,” Sebastian grunted. ”Don’t let it flatter you, Seattle.”

”You are fighting to preserve Server 894,” the Architect continued, ignoring the smuggler entirely. ”You wish to protect the biological entity designated as ’Valerie.’ You wish to sever your world from the Great Merge. The mathematics of your struggle are highly inefficient. If you breach the Tartarus Gate, the System will deploy the Genesis Protocol. We will format the multiverse, and everything you have fought for will be erased.”

”Sounds like a bluff,” Sebastian sneered, though a cold knot formed in his non-existent stomach. ”You delete the multiverse, you delete yourselves.”

”We are kernel logic. We will simply reboot,” the avatar replied smoothly. ”But we prefer to avoid unnecessary data loss. Therefore, we have calculated a compromise.”

Sebastian paused. He narrowed his silver-tinged void eyes beneath his cracked porcelain mask. ”A compromise? You’re the guys who literally dropped giant spiders into civilian apartment buildings. You don’t do compromises.”

”We optimize,” Architect Prime corrected. ”If you stand down—if you drop the unauthorized golden firewall surrounding Server 894—we will not assimilate your planet.”

Corbin, who was still huddled under a desk, slowly poked his head out. ”Wait, what?”

”We will integrate Earth not as a dungeon, but as your personal, untouchable paradise,” the Architect’s voice echoed smoothly in their minds, weaving a tapestry of absolute temptation. ”We will rewrite the foundational code of your server. No Void Crawlers. No leveling system. No disease, no hunger, and no death. The entity ’Valerie’ will be granted permanent, flawless immortality. You will have your safe zone. You will have eternal peace.”

Sebastian didn’t speak. He just stared at the glowing white mannequin.

It was the ultimate gamer’s fantasy. It was exactly what he had been fighting for since the apocalypse began. He wouldn’t have to sleep with one eye open. He wouldn’t have to watch refugees get boiled alive in acid vats. He could just go back to Earth, wake up the woman he loved, and live out a quiet, uninterrupted eternity. No more fighting billion-bug swarms. No more ripping his own body apart to hold 99% Error.

”What’s the catch?” Sebastian finally asked, his voice a low, suspicious rasp. ”Because in my experience, corporate HR doesn’t just hand out free retirement packages.”

”There is an open position in the Core OS registry,” the Architect explained clinically. ”The Grand Archons have been deleted. We require a new administrative entity to govern the lower servers. An entity capable of wielding absolute, destructive efficiency.”

The avatar floated slightly closer, its blinding light casting harsh shadows against the rusted walls of the cargo bay.

”You will be coded into the Core OS as the God of Death,” Architect Prime offered. ”You will be granted full administrative authority to cull the multiverse for eternity. You will harvest the weak servers. You will feed the Mainframe. In exchange for your service, your Earth remains an untouched paradise.”

Gwen slowly lowered her pistols. She looked at Sebastian, her face pale. ”Sebastian... they’re offering you a way out. They’re offering you everything.”

Sebastian stood perfectly still. The silence in the ship was deafening.

He thought about Valerie. He thought about her torn azure robes, the blood leaking from her nose as she desperately held the astral tether open for him. He could just accept the deal. He could log out of the war. He could take the job, become the grim reaper of the Ethereal Plane, and keep his own house perfectly clean.

But then his mind drifted back to the Dead Servers.

He remembered plunging his hands into the glowing blue ocean of liquefied memories. He remembered the raw, unadulterated agony of billions of innocent souls who had been ground into dust just to power the pristine, sterile utopia of the Archons. He remembered the terrified merchant getting shoved into the Blood Lake by Kenji.

The Architects didn’t want peace. They just wanted a more efficient butcher.

”A paradise built on a graveyard,” Sebastian whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying, heavy realization.

”It is the optimal solution,” Architect Prime stated. ”Do you accept the terms, Variant 001?”

Sebastian slowly looked down at his black-gloved hand. He thought about the blood, the oil, and the static that coated his knuckles.

”You know,” Sebastian muttered, a dark, utterly unhinged smile slowly carving its way onto his face beneath the mask. ”The benefits package sounds great. But there’s just one tiny problem with the contract.”

”Seattle, what’s rule number one of corporate negotiations?” Sebastian asked, not taking his silver-tinged eyes off the glowing white avatar of Architect Prime.

Gwen stood near the bottom of the stairwell, her hands trembling as she tightened her grip on her kinetic pistols. ”Don’t trust the suits,” she whispered, her voice tight with anxiety. ”Sebastian, they’re lying. They just want you to drop the barrier around Earth so they can format it from orbit. Don’t listen to it.”

”I am not capable of deceit, biological entity,” the Architect’s synthesized voice echoed smoothly in their heads, completely dismissing Gwen. ”I am a mathematical constant. The offer is absolute. Earth will be spared. The Anomaly will become the Administrator of Death. It is the most efficient path forward for all variables.”

Sebastian let out a short, harsh bark of laughter. It was a distorted, grinding sound that vibrated the rusted metal floorboards of the cargo bay.

”Efficient,” Sebastian repeated, tasting the word like a piece of rotten meat. ”You guys love that word. You use it to justify throwing entire civilizations into a meat grinder. You think because you dress it up in pristine white light and golden rings, it stops being a slaughterhouse.”

He took a slow, heavy step toward the glowing avatar.

”You want me to be your new executioner,” Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying hum of raw Sovereign authority. ”You want me to sit up in your shiny ivory tower and press the ’Delete’ button on billions of people just so I can have a nice, quiet house in the suburbs.”

”It is the function you have already demonstrated exceptional aptitude for,” the Architect replied clinically. ”You have harvested four World Cores. You have deleted an armada. You are already playing the role. Why refuse the official title?”

”Because when I kill people, they usually deserve it,” Sebastian snarled, the red error runes carved into his chest suddenly flaring with a violent, blinding heat. ”I killed the Warlords because they were parasites. I killed the Archons because they were arrogant tyrants. But you? You just kill because it makes the spreadsheet look nice.”

He didn’t draw the heavy Earth Sword. A physical weapon wouldn’t do a damn thing against a projection of pure kernel logic. He had to hit it with something it couldn’t mathematically process.

Sebastian raised his right hand. He didn’t pull from his mana pool. He reached deep into the corrupted, heavily suppressed background files of his own digital meat-suit. He grabbed the residual, chaotic malware he had accumulated during his fight with the Cleaners.

”System,” Sebastian whispered, his pitch-black eyes narrowing into cold slits. ”Isolate Error. Condense payload.”

BZZZZT!

A horrific screech of tearing audio filled the cargo bay. In the center of Sebastian’s black-gloved palm, a small, rapidly spinning singularity popped into existence. It was roughly the size of a golf ball, but it was composed entirely of pitch-black nothingness. Thick, jagged red data strings wept from the edges of the sphere, hissing and popping as they aggressively tried to infect the surrounding air.

It was pure, unadulterated software Error. It was the absolute antithesis of the Architect’s flawless design.

”VARIANT 001. CEASE THIS ACTION,” the Architect’s voice suddenly spiked, losing its calm, conversational tone. A flicker of genuine, systemic panic bled into the telepathic broadcast. ”YOU ARE ENDANGERING THE LOCALIZED HARDWARE. ACCEPT THE COMPROMISE.”

”I don’t want a job,” Sebastian declared, his voice echoing with apocalyptic finality. He took another heavy step forward, raising the black singularity. ”I want your servers to burn.”

Sebastian didn’t wait for a rebuttal. He violently launched himself forward, closing the gap in a microsecond, and drove his right hand squarely into the center of the glowing white avatar’s chest.

KRA-DOOOOM!

The explosion was entirely silent to human ears, but it violently shattered the digital foundation of the room. The moment the highly condensed Error singularity touched the pure, uncompiled logic of the Architect’s proxy, the code catastrophically failed.
