Awakening a 10,000x Skill Proficiency Multiplier in the Apocalypse

The brilliant blue waypoint on his UI was barely a flicker, occasionally dipping into a dull gray before weakly pulsing back to life. She was dying on that altar to keep the line open, and every passing second felt like a physical weight pressing down on Sebastian’s chest.

”How much further, Corbin?” Sebastian barked down the stairwell.

”Two miles! Maybe less!” the code-smith chattered back, his teeth audibly clicking together. ”The radar is completely blind, Boss! The data density up ahead is so thick it’s just returning solid black walls on the monitors!”

Sebastian turned his gaze back to the viewport.

Then, the universe simply stopped.

It didn’t happen with a crash or an explosion. It happened with a terrifying, absolute suddenness that completely defied the laws of physics.

The screaming whine of the Rusthound’s over-taxed starboard engine abruptly cut out. The heavy vibrations rattling the floorboards instantly ceased. The faint, ambient dust particles floating outside the windshield froze perfectly in mid-air.

”Gwen, what did you do?” Sebastian asked, taking a step forward.

Gwen didn’t answer.

Sebastian looked down at the pilot’s chair. Gwen was completely frozen. Her hands were still tightly gripping the flight stick, her eyes wide and unblinking, her mouth slightly parted as if she were mid-breath. She looked like a highly detailed, incredibly realistic statue.

”Gwen?” Sebastian reached out, tapping her on the shoulder.

His black leather glove passed right through her.

”What the fuck?” Sebastian hissed, quickly pulling his hand back.

He looked down the stairwell. Corbin was frozen mid-shiver, the canvas tarp suspended unnaturally around his shoulders. The blinking red lights of the server racks were locked in a solid, unmoving crimson glow.

Even the faint, flickering blue light of Valerie’s tether on his UI had stopped pulsing. It was locked in a static, frozen state.

Time had stopped.

”This is not a rollback,” a voice echoed through the frozen cabin.

Sebastian didn’t spin around. He didn’t draw a weapon. The voice didn’t come from behind him. It didn’t come from the ship’s comms. It resonated perfectly, flawlessly inside the deepest, most foundational architecture of his own mind.

It wasn’t the booming, arrogant, synthesized chorus of the Grand Archons. It wasn’t the fanatic, screaming rage of a Saint.

It sounded like a quiet, perfectly articulated human voice. It was smooth, clinical, and entirely devoid of any emotion. It was the voice of a scientist looking through a microscope.

”Who are you?” Sebastian asked aloud, his voice sounding weirdly flat in the frozen, dead air of the cockpit.

”You may refer to me as Architect Prime,” the voice replied, its tone carrying a mild, almost polite curiosity. ”I am the core logic sequence of the Ethereal Plane’s operating system. And you are a very fascinating piece of malware, Variant 001.”

Sebastian slowly crossed his arms over his chest. He felt the heavy, biological steel of his thirty-percent synchronization coiled tight, ready to unleash a catastrophic burst of Error. But he held it back. You didn’t just punch the narrator of the universe without gathering some intel first.

”You froze the server,” Sebastian noted calmly. ”Why? Taking a coffee break?”

”I paused the localized rendering,” Architect Prime corrected smoothly. ”It is highly inefficient to converse while your physical avatar is actively hurtling toward the Tartarus Gate at Mach 2. Furthermore, I wished to observe you without the chaotic interference of your emotional attachments.”

The voice paused, a digital silence stretching for a fraction of a second as the entity seemingly scanned Sebastian’s core data.

”You are an unexpected variable,” the Architect continued, its tone entirely conversational. ”The System was designed to generate conflict. The Great Merge, the Void Crawlers, the leveling mechanics—they were all carefully constructed to force biological entities into rapid, stressful evolution. We created the Saints to farm that evolved data. We created the Archons to manage the farm.”

”Yeah, well, your farm is a slaughterhouse, and your managers were arrogant pricks,” Sebastian deadpanned, staring out at the frozen dust particles in the void. ”So I fired them.”

”Indeed,” Architect Prime said, sounding utterly unbothered by the fact that Sebastian had just brutally murdered its highest-ranking employees. ”The Archons had grown bloated. They became obsessed with their own simulated divinity. They forgot they were merely algorithms. The Saints were equally useless—fanatics playing at godhood while failing to optimize the true potential of the Source Code.”

The voice resonated with a chilling, analytical apathy. It didn’t care about the millions of lives lost. It didn’t care about the pain, the suffering, or the horror. It only cared about the data yield.

”You, however,” the Architect said, a hint of genuine fascination creeping into the smooth voice. ”You are magnificent. You took a microscopic flaw in the rendering engine—a 10,000x proficiency glitch—and you weaponized it. You synthesized new laws of physics. You consumed World Cores. You adapted. You are the most perfect evolutionary mutation the Ethereal Plane has ever produced.”

Sebastian’s pitch-black, featureless visor remained perfectly still. ”Is this the part where you offer me a promotion? Because the last guys who did that ended up scattered across the marble floor as a gray mist.”

”I am not offering you a promotion, Variant 001,” Architect Prime replied calmly. ”I am offering you a diagnosis. You are attempting to breach the Tartarus Gate to access the Core OS. You believe you can rewrite the foundational rules of the multiverse to save the biological entity tethered to your code.”

”I don’t believe it. I know it,” Sebastian stated, his voice dropping into that dark, terrifying hum of absolute Sovereign authority.

”Your logic is flawed,” the Architect stated, entirely dismissing the threat. ”The Core OS is not a digital environment. It is the absolute, base hardware reality that projects the Ethereal Plane. If you, a highly compressed mass of corrupted digital data, attempt to enter the Core OS, your rendering will collapse. You will instantly un-render. You will cease to exist. You are fighting for a victory that mathematics dictates you cannot survive to enjoy.”
