Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

”Pull it out. Then put it back in,” Darwin suggested.

The Old Boys Club exchanged knowing glances across the table. Ashfang. Duskwin. Redmoon. Grimscar. They had seen the map light for her. They had seen it light for him. It wasn’t that fucking complicated.

Nicholas lifted one hand.

The room went silent so fast it produced a vacuum. Forty-nine Alphas, their Betas, their Gammas, and every officer in the upper stands closed their mouths at the same exact second.

”The map answered my blood the way it answered my Luna’s. Draw your own conclusions. I’m moving to the agenda.”

One sentence. The entire map debate, the sabotage accusation, the matebond interference theory, the hokey pokey, and Darwin’s blade angle all got buried in a single, unmarked grave and nobody was bringing flowers.

Renwick opened his eyes.

✦✦✦

Forty-five minutes. That’s all it took.

Nicholas ran the table the way tables were supposed to be run and every Alpha in the chamber felt the difference.

Brennan was introduced as the Master Mage of Shadowfell.

”There’s a limitation. The anchors are infrastructure. You still need a mage to activate a portal,” Brennan explained. ”But the anchors make it possible. That is step one.”

Nicholas gave a nod to him. ”Thank you, Brennan.”

Brennan’s chest puffed so hard Damon had to put a hand on his shoulder to keep him from floating out of his seat.

”There we have it,” Nicholas continued. ”Step one. We get those up. No pack fights alone. No pack dies isolated because help was eight hundred miles away and running on foot.”

Every small-territory Alpha in the room sat straighter.

Defense coordination followed. Intelligence sharing. Resource pooling. The relay network with Shadowfell wolves holding the spine. Every item Renwick had failed to close in two sessions, Nicholas closed in under an hour.

The agenda lived. Renwick stared at its breathing, functioning body like a man watching someone resuscitate the corpse he had pronounced dead and buried with full honors.

The chamber exhaled. The business was done. The agenda that had survived two assassination attempts and a hostage crisis was complete. Signed. Sealed. Delivered. Every Alpha had committed resources, intelligence, and territory access to a unified defense structure that hadn’t existed twelve hours ago.

The crown-wearing, continent-commanding competence on display made Renwick’s sessions look like a daycare dispute adjudicated by the dumbest parent in the carriage-pool lane.

Then Nicholas’s voice changed register.

”One more thing.”

The room tightened. They had just spent forty-five minutes watching competence operate and the shift in tone communicated that competence was about to get ugly.

”Bring him in.”

The words were calm because the man delivering them had moved past rage into something colder and more permanent, the quiet, structural certainty that justice was not optional and the man who had harmed his mate was going to understand that with his whole body before this session ended.

None of Shadowfell’s men reacted except for Brennan, whose eyes went about as wide as saucers.

The doors opened. Four Shadowfell wolves escorted Tharos Stonehowl into the council chamber in chains.

Every conversation died.

Tharos Stonehowl strutted through that chamber like a scorched, self-sabotaging shit-stirrer who had set his own legacy on fire. He looked like a man who had been burned by gold flame, locked in a cell, tortured by the Dragon King, met some psychopath named Kael right after, followed by some fuck named Ryker, and then an emotionless sociopath named Sterling, and was now being dragged in front of every person he had spent two days trying to outmaneuver.

His skin was raw, slow to regenerate from being cuffed in silver. His wrists were raw from the chains. His nose was set wrong from where Guinevere had headbutted it. He looked like a man who had been passed through every circle of hell and each one had taken a souvenir.

Every head in the chamber tracked him the way heads track a lit fuse. The upper stands went rigid. Betas who had been relaxed for the first time in hours locked back into combat posture.

Darwin tracked him hardest because Darwin had backed this man two days ago and that investment was currently on fire in public.

The room had been functioning like adults for forty-five minutes and the entry of Tharos Stonehowl reminded every wolf present that adulthood needed to continue.

The guards positioned him at the center of the round table. The man who had walked into this summit demanding respect was now standing in front of every wolf he had tried to intimidate.

Tharos scanned the room.

His eyes found Nicholas and stopped.

Three seconds of staring. Then his mouth curled into something that looked like a grin if grins were forged in spite and set on fire.

”I saw you dead, Shadowfell.”

The chamber held its breath. Forty-nine Alphas, every Beta, every Gamma in the stands, all of them heard the word dead and the silence that followed had the texture of a room recalculating something it thought it already knew.

Nicholas didn’t flinch. He heard it and felt nothing, because the man who had died in that corridor had come back carrying something that the man in chains couldn’t kill with dark magic or take with silver: the knowledge that the woman who brought him back was worth every second of the twelve minutes he lost.

”I’m alive. So you’re mistaken.”

The understatement of the century delivered with the warmth of a glacier.

Tharos’s grin didn’t waver. The man had been beaten, burned, chained, and was now standing in a room full of enemies, and his grin was the only weapon he had left. He was going to use it until someone ripped it off his face because he had nothing left to lose and found the freedom refreshing.

”Mistaken. Sure.” Tharos looked around the chamber.”Good turnout. I see the whole family showed up. Even the B-team got seats.”

Reed: B-Team.

Damon: Yes, he called us the B-team from inside chains.

Reed: I found his B-Team was shoved in a closet.

”You’re here because I chose to let you speak,” Nicholas said. ”That generosity has a shelf life. I’d recommend using it wisely.”

Tharos was not going to use it wisely. Every person in the room knew that. Tharos knew that. Nicholas knew that. The recommendation was a formality extended to a man who had never once in his life taken good advice.

”Generous,” Tharos repeated. ”Generous is what you call it when the host drags a man in chains in front of a room he used to sit in as an equal.”

’Used to’ hung in the air between them and every wolf felt the gravity of it. A man who had commanded a pack, held a seat, carried a name that meant something, was standing in chains in front of every Alpha he had ever shaken hands with, and the distance between who he was and who he had become could be measured in two words and one woman he should never have touched.
