Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

A woman walked in like she owned the place. Black hair. Gold eyes. The same gold eyes as Maddox, which meant either sibling or family and the resemblance was too strong for coincidence.

”You’re welcome,” she said to Maddox without looking at him.

”You did this.” Maddox gestured at the room like a crime scene.

Her eyes were already on Guinevere and her entire face changed.

”There she is.”

She crossed the room in four steps, pulled Guinevere out of Maddox’s arms like separating a child from a toy, and wrapped her in a hug so committed it squished the breath from Guinevere’s lungs.

She was hugging Guinevere like they’d known each other for years.

The woman pulled back. Held Guinevere at arm’s length. Looked her dead in the eyes with a certainty that left zero room for debate.

”We’re best friends.”

Guinevere’s mouth opened. Nothing came out.

”Blair. Stop scaring her.” Maddox pulled Guinevere back against his chest with the possessiveness of a man whose wife kept being removed from his arms by people he was related to.

”I’m not scaring her. I’m informing her.”

”You’ve known her for four seconds.”

”Quality over quantity, brother.”

”That’s not how friendship works.”

”It’s exactly how friendship works. You wouldn’t know. You don’t have any.”

Ryker raised his hand. ”I’m standing right here.”

”I said what I said.”

”Blair. Did you do this? Answer me.” Maddox was using the full draconic register.

”Obviously.”

”WHAT DO YOU MEAN OBVIOUSLY?”

”It’s better.”

”I didn’t want better. I wanted MINE.”

Blair looked at Kael. Kael looked at Blair. An alliance formed in the span of one glance.

”The pillows are great,” Kael offered from the bed.

”Thank you, Kael,” Blair said.

”You changed my goddamn bed,” Maddox said.

”I did.”

”Why?”

”Because yours was ugly and uncomfortable. Next.”

”You moved my stuff.”

”I organized your stuff. There’s a difference. You’re welcome.”

”I don’t WANT it organized. I had a system.”

”You had a pile, Maddox.”

”It was MY pile.”

Blair turned to Guinevere. ”He’s always like this. You’ll get used to it.”

An argument erupted.

Guinevere zoned out, catching fragments.

”Blair, you can’t just—” and ”I redecorated for HER, not for you—” and ”The pillows are staying, Maddox, I will die on this hill—” and Ryker’s voice saying ”I actually like the navy” and Sterling saying ”The previous color scheme was adequate” and Lux saying something about the bathing chamber that made Blair gasp and launch into a rebuttal that involved the phrase ”bath salt curation” with a passion that suggested it was a discipline she had studied.

Jaxon said nothing. Jaxon was examining a brass fixture on the wall like it contained the answers to questions more important than interior design.

The argument swelled. Voices layered over voices. Maddox’s chest vibrated against her back with a frequency that was half dragon rumble and half frustration and the combination was like leaning against a warm engine that was idling too high.

Her eyes found Kael. He was lying back on Maddox’s bed watching her. She trusted him. The thought arrived whole and certain. She trusted Kael. The way you trust a person who has seen you at the bottom of a well and climbed down instead of throwing a rope.

He would know the right thing to do. He would tell her the truth. He wouldn’t soften it and he wouldn’t weaponize it. He would just say it, the way he said everything, with the specific directness of a man who respected her enough to skip the cushioning.

She opened her mouth.

”Could I have a quick word with you, Kael?”

The argument stopped.

Every voice. Every sentence. Every half-formed opinion about bath salts and navy walls and pillow gradients died simultaneously like someone had pulled the plug on the room’s audio.

Maddox’s dragon rumbled in his chest. The vibration traveled through her back and into her ribs and she felt it the way you feel thunder through a window. His arm stayed around her. His breathing stayed even. But the dragon underneath the breathing was doing something that the breathing was trying very hard to pretend wasn’t happening.

Eyes moved. Kael to Maddox. Maddox to Kael. Sterling to Lux. Ryker to the ceiling. Blair to the pillows.

A mindlink conversation was happening. She could see it firing. See the micro-adjustments in posture and jaw and eye contact that meant six people were having a discussion she couldn’t hear about a request she had just made out loud.

She didn’t know what was being said. She could feel the tension radiating off Maddox like heat from a furnace that had been asked to share its fire with another furnace and was having feelings about the request.

Maddox’s voice came out level, in a tone that didn’t match the tension bleeding off of him like a fever.

”Of course.” He loosened his arm. Stepped back. ”You stay here. I’ll be back in fifteen minutes.”

He said fifteen minutes the way a man says ’fifteen minutes’ when he means ’I am going to count every single one of them.’

They filed out. Blair first, squeezing Guinevere’s hand on the way past with a look that said ’I’ll be back and we WILL discuss the bath salts.’ Ryker. Sterling. Lux. Jaxon. Maddox last, pausing in the doorway for one second that carried the weight of a man who kept losing his wife and he didn’t want her to vanish again.

The door closed.

Kael didn’t wait.

He crossed the room in three strides and pulled her into a hug that made every other hug she’d received tonight feel like a handshake. His arms wrapped around her and her face pressed into his chest and the light moved immediately.

She felt it leave her body and pour into his like water finding a drain. Warmth flooded from her chest through her arms through every point of contact and into Kael with a force that was both relief and release. The pressure that had been building behind her ribs, the runes, the flashes, the constant low hum of something too big for her body, eased for the first time in hours.

Kael felt it too. She could tell by the way his arms tightened and his breathing changed and his chin found the top of her head.

He had access. Whatever had been blocked or stuttering or misfiring all night was open now. Her light was pouring into him with the steady, uninterrupted flow of a channel that had been cleared by the runes or the pool or the venom or all three.

He could feel her. All of her. The exhaustion and the guilt and the grief and the fear and underneath all of it, buried deep, a trust so complete it made his chest ache.

She trusted him.

He held her tighter.
