Reborn As Super Heiress

As a municipal Party secretary, you can’t say Du Wenfeng’s rank isn’t respectable—there’s no way you could say that. Otherwise the governor of Yun Province wouldn’t have appointed him to handle Huo Sining’s case, which shows he really values this subordinate and thinks his rank is more than sufficient.

But to Huo Sining, he was really nothing special.

Mainly because over these years, Huo Sining has met plenty of people far above Du Wenfeng’s level.

When she got married, the lowest-ranking guests were at vice-ministerial level; even one of Chief Lu’s secretaries was a full department-level official. She’d seen so many of them that Huo Sining had long since gotten used to it.

Still, with Du Wenfeng putting on such a humble posture in front of her, Huo Sining wasn’t the kind of person who didn’t know how to read the room; naturally she wasn’t going to really stomp him into the mud.

There’s a saying: you don’t slap a smiling face. Even if the Gu Family and the people backing her now are high-ranking, that’s not capital she should use to belittle others.

So after thinking it over, Huo Sining decided to give this Du Wenfeng a few pointers.

He’s someone Governor Wu thinks highly of; he shouldn’t be stupid enough to be this dense, right?

”Secretary Du, don’t let today’s incident weigh on you psychologically. As long as you focus on doing your current work well with no distractions, that’s enough.”

”It’s just that, coming to Luohua County this time, I’ve found the problems in your local area really aren’t small.”

”A tiny Xiakan Village has exposed problems this big—so what does that say about your whole Dali?”

”As ’parents of the people’, you shouldn’t sit up in your ivory tower. You ought to go down to the grassroots more and listen to what ordinary people are saying.”

”Don’t let capital take control of the government and turn you into enforcers for criminal forces. That does huge damage to the government’s credibility, and it harms your own reputation as Secretary Du, doesn’t it?”

Being prodded like this by Huo Sining, Du Wenfeng couldn’t help but stiffen; he nodded in agreement almost instinctively.

If he still couldn’t understand what Huo Sining meant by these words, then he really would be an idiot.

After so many years in officialdom, Du Wenfeng at least had that bit of insight. And the fact that Huo Sining was willing to say these things just now showed she still wanted to wake him up; she hadn’t completely given up on him.

That made Du Wenfeng feel as if, in the dead of winter, he’d just downed a glass of iced sour plum juice like it was the dog days of summer—his whole body felt refreshed, and joy flashed across his face as he said:

”Please rest assured, the follow-up work will definitely be handled properly. We will ensure these thugs are brought to justice, and we’ll strictly crack down on public security management issues, purge the city’s overall atmosphere, and make sure the people’s interests are no longer harmed.”

Huo Sining smiled and nodded. ”All right then, Secretary Du, I’ll leave this matter to you.”

She hoped this man would do as he said, and not just spout empty words.

For the moment, Huo Sining still couldn’t render a definitive judgment, so she only spoke casually for a bit, then left with Yu Fei and the others.

On Du Wenfeng’s side, he wielded the knife boldly; work efficiency shot up. In no time at all, more than a hundred hooligans and gangsters were all cuffed and loaded onto military trucks, each truck guarded by a dozen elite SWAT officers armed to the teeth.

The whole unit drove straight toward the county seat, while the remaining SWAT officers quickly assembled and marched back to the county on foot.

This place was only ten to twenty kilometers from the county seat—this distance was just their usual training mileage. It was naturally very easy for them.

The public security officers Tan Minghui had brought also got into their vehicles. Before leaving, they still reported briefly to Du Wenfeng over there, then drove off, following the SWAT convoy all the way back to the county.

In that other car, Xu Zehua sat without saying a word, hunched in the middle of the seat, utterly silent.

The few county-level police officers left in the car saw this and didn’t even dare breathe loudly; none of them dared to risk provoking the bureau chief at a time like this.

Xu Zehua’s expression was extremely ugly. He already knew that this time he was in for serious trouble.

They’d poked such a huge hornets’ nest—even if that Huo Sining were willing to let him off, would the municipal bureau leaders and provincial department leaders, all rattled by this incident, let him off?

Something this serious had happened, and it turned out his own deputy had colluded with local thugs to pull it off, while he remained completely in the dark. That was the very definition of failing to manage his subordinates. Since he didn’t have the capability, someone capable would be put in his place; the higher-ups would definitely tell him to pack up and get out.

Xu Zehua’s eyes were a bit vacant; his mind went blank, and for a moment he didn’t even know how to deal with himself.

The police officers in the car were all jittery too, each one at a loss.

They were just small fry working at the grassroots level, with no right to have a say. When it came to orders from their leaders, all they could do was obey.

So if blame was to be assigned for what happened today, it really wouldn’t land on their heads.

They hadn’t known anything; it had all been stirred up by that Ye Yuhai behind the scenes.

But they couldn’t cry injustice either. When gods fight, it’s the little devils that suffer. What’s more, they really had botched the job today. If the higher-ups pursued accountability, the first ones to be disciplined would be these low-ranking cops.

So not just Xu Zehua—the other police officers all understood they were likely going to suffer along with him this time.

At this moment, no one remembered that earlier they’d done this muddle-headed thing only because they were cowed by Ye Yuhai’s power.

Now, they hated Ye Yuhai so much their teeth itched. Each of them was cursing him in their hearts, wishing that once Ye Yuhai was arrested this time, he’d just rot in prison for the rest of his life—best if he ended up in front of a firing squad. It was as if only that could vent the anger in their hearts.

Of course, it wasn’t just these police officers. For this mess today, everyone who got dragged into it was probably cursing that damned Ye Yuhai in their hearts.

Even Tan Minghui had a huge ball of fire burning inside. So after hauling Ye Yuhai back to the County Public Security Bureau, Tan Minghui got out of the car and didn’t bother with anything else—he rushed straight in and, seeing Ye Yuhai in handcuffs, went at him with a flurry of vicious kicks.

The few on-duty police officers at the County Public Security Bureau still had no idea what had happened in Xiakan Village. When they saw Xu Zehua and his people return, they were about to ask what was going on, but then they saw Ye Yuhai being brought in in handcuffs and were instantly stunned.

Before they had a chance to ask what the hell was going on, a dark figure flew in and laid into their Deputy Director with a savage beating.

They heard Ye Yuhai howling like a ghost, and then saw who was doing the beating—it was their superior leader, the Municipal Public Security Bureau Director, Tan Minghui.

Now those on-duty officers were so shocked their jaws nearly hit the floor. They looked at each other, faces full of disbelief and confusion, completely at a loss as to what was happening.

”Fuck your mother, Ye Yuhai. If you don’t want to live, you can go die on your own—don’t drag me down with you. You’re nothing but a shit-stirring stick, you know that?”
