Unexpected Second Chance at Love

Lu Tian and Park Min Lee were waiting downstairs in the living room.

The moment Yue Ling appeared, Lu Tian looked up.

His eyes moved over her face. He noticed the faint redness around her eyes.

The softness in her expression.

The quiet sadness she hadn’t entirely managed to conceal.

His gaze lingered, silently asking whether she was alright.

Yue Ling understood.

She gave him a reassuring smile.

Lu Tian’s expression softened. He rose from the couch.

”Ready?”

She nodded.

”Ready.”

He approached and gently took her hand.

Yue Ling turned toward her friends.

”Hana, Min Lee, we should be on our way.”

Lee Hana’s smile faltered.

”You just got here and you’re leaving already.”

Yue Ling nodded apologetically.

”We only have today to see everyone.”

Hana sighed and walked the couple out with her husband.

However, she couldn’t help sighing in sadness every few seconds.

She understood but it was hard.

She had a hard time coping with Yue Ling’s sudden decision to move to Imperial, but she accepted it.

Now that Hana had finally reunited with her dear friend, a part of her wished Yue Ling could stay a little longer. Their time together was always too brief, and she couldn’t help longing for the days when they could see each other without wondering when they would meet again.

Watching Yue Ling step out the door, she took a step forward with unshed tears.

”I wish you could stay longer.”

”I know.”

Yue Ling turned to her with a faint smile.

”Next time, I’ll plan a longer visit.”

Hana immediately pulled her into a hug.

”You’d better.”

Yue Ling laughed softly and returned the embrace.

”I promise.”

Hana held her tightly for several seconds then reluctantly stepped back.

Her eyes shifted toward Lu Tian.

The warmth in her expression slowly gave way to seriousness.

”Lu Tian.”

He looked at her.

”Take care of her.”

His gaze remained steady.

Hana folded her arms.

”And I mean it.”

Park Min Lee glanced at his wife. He knew that expression.

There was no stopping her now.

Hana turned into a mother protecting her child.

”If you so much as make her sad or treat her badly, I’ll come after you myself.”

Yue Ling blinked.

”Hana!”

Her friend ignored her.

”I don’t care how powerful you are or how frightening people say you can be.”

She pointed a finger at him.

”Yue Ling is precious to us. To me.”

Lu Tian listened without interrupting.

He was well aware of his reputation.

In both the business world and the underworld, his name was spoken with caution, often in hushed voices behind closed doors. Cold, ruthless, and frighteningly unpredictable, he was a man whose silence inspired more fear than another man’s threats.

Those who dared challenge him often learned too late that his mercy was nonexistent and his patience dangerously thin.

He rarely raised his voice, for he had never needed to. A single glance from his dark, unreadable eyes was enough to silence an entire room.

And when he decided someone was no longer worthy of his tolerance, their downfall was not a possibility.

It was a certainty.

Few people dared speak to him so directly.

Those who knew him understood that even the slightest disrespect could come at a devastating price. Most chose their words carefully, weighing every syllable before allowing it to leave their lips.

Yet the person standing before him seemed utterly unconcerned by the danger of provoking him.

And perhaps that was what made the situation so unusual.

For a man accustomed to making others tremble with a single glance, being confronted without the slightest trace of fear was a rare occurrence indeed.

He understood exactly where Hana’s warning came from.

Love.

The same fierce protectiveness he felt toward the woman standing beside him.

Lu Tian turned toward Yue Ling.

The coldness in his expression disappeared.

His gaze softened and reached for her hand.

”She’s my heart.”

Yue Ling froze.

He gently lifted her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.

Then looked back at Hana.

”The day I treat her wrongfully...”

His voice remained calm.

”...is the day I go after myself.”

Silence.

Lee Hana stared at him.

Park Min Lee blinked.

Even Yue Ling was speechless.

Her cheeks slowly turned red.

She hadn’t expected him to answer so bluntly.

Especially in front of her friends.

Lu Tian, however, appeared entirely unbothered.

He continued holding her hand as though he had said nothing unusual.

Hana opened her mouth. Then closed it.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed to have run out of words.

Park Min Lee cleared his throat.

A smile threatened to spread across his face.

Yue Ling quickly looked away.

”We should get going before the sun sets.”

Her voice sounded a little too hurried.

Hana blinked.

Then a grin slowly appeared.

”Oh?”

Yue Ling shot her a warning look.

”Hana.”

Her friend laughed.

”Nothing! I didn’t say anything!”

Park Min Lee finally chuckled.

Lu Tian merely smiled.

Yue Ling wished the floor would open beneath her feet.

After another round of farewells, the four walked out the door onto the porch.

The afternoon air was cooler now.

Long shadows stretched across the driveway as the sun began its gradual descent.

Hana held Yue Ling’s hands one last time.

”Call me when you get back.”

”I will.”

”And don’t forget to send me the wedding details.”

”I won’t.”

Hana smiled.

Then leaned forward and hugged her again.

”Take care of yourself.”

Yue Ling closed her eyes briefly.

”You too.”

They separated and Yue Ling walked toward the car with Lu Tian.

He opened the passenger door for his wife.

Once she was seated inside, he closed the door gently before walking around to the driver’s side.

As the engine started, Yue Ling lowered her window.

”Bye, Hana!”

Hana waved.

”Bye!”

Park Min Lee raised a hand.

”Have a safe trip!”

Yue Ling smiled.

”We will!”

The car slowly rolled down the driveway.

Hana continued waving until it disappeared beyond the gates.

Only then did she lower her hand.

The smile on her face softened.

Beside her, Park Min Lee slipped an arm around her shoulders.

”Do you believe me now?”

Hana glanced at him.

He smiled.

”About Lu Tian.”

She remained quiet for a moment.

Then leaned her head against her husband’s shoulder.

”I know he isn’t a bad person.”

Park Min Lee raised an eyebrow.

”Then why did you threaten him?”

”Because I wanted to.”

He laughed.

”Hana.”

She sighed.

”I just wanted to see it for myself.”

Her gaze remained on the empty driveway.

”I’ve heard about him. About how cold he is. How ruthless he can be.”

She paused.

”But hearing something and seeing it are two different things.”

Park Min Lee nodded.

He understood.

Hana had always been protective of Yue Ling.

They were friends before Shin came into Yue Ling’s life.

And especially after everything that had happened.

She wasn’t someone who would easily trust another person with her friend’s happiness.

But today, she had seen something no rumor could have shown her.

The way Lu Tian looked at Yue Ling.

The way he reached for her hand without thinking.

How his expression softened whenever she smiled.

And how he quietly watched over her without making her feel as though she needed protecting.

Hana smiled.

”They’re good together.”

Park Min Lee looked down at her.

”I told you.”

She nodded then sighed.

”I just didn’t think he’d be so...”

She hesitated.

Her husband waited.

”So what?”

Hana pursed her lips.

”...Shameless.”

Park Min Lee burst into laughter.

Hana looked at him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

He continued laughing.

”That’s certainly one way to describe him.”

She shook her head.

”Did you hear what he said?”

”Every word.”

”’She’s my heart.’”

Hana imitated Lu Tian’s deep voice.

Then pressed a hand dramatically against her chest.

”’The day I treat her wrongfully is the day I go after myself.’”

Park Min Lee laughed harder.

”Hana!”

”What? That’s what he said!”

”You’re making fun of the poor man.”

”I’m not making fun of him.”

She paused then smiled.

”Well... maybe a little.”

Park Min Lee shook his head affectionately.

”What can we say?”

He leaned down and kissed the top of her head.

”The man is in love with her.”

Hana’s laughter slowly faded. She looked toward the gate again.

”Yes.”

Her voice softened.

”He really is.”

Park Min Lee tightened his arm around her.

”She’s in good hands.”

For a moment, they stood together in comfortable silence.

Then Park Min Lee lifted his gaze toward the pale afternoon sky.

”Shin would be happy.”

Hana went still.

The words settled deep within her heart.

She slowly raised her eyes.

Above the mountains, thin clouds drifted across the cold winter sky.

Her throat tightened.

”He would be.”

Lee Hana remembered her brother clearly.

Not only the man he had become.

But the little boy he had once been.

The boy who had learned far too early that his heart was different from everyone else’s.

From a young age, doctors had warned their family about his condition.

His heart was weak.

He couldn’t overexert himself.

He had to be careful.

While other children ran freely through playgrounds, Lee Shin often watched from the sidelines.

He would smile and wave.

Pretend he didn’t mind.

But Hana had seen the disappointment in his eyes.

She remembered the hospital rooms.

The long nights.

The frightening sound of machines monitoring his heartbeat.

She remembered their parents trying to remain strong.

And the way Shin would smile at everyone, even when he was the one lying in the hospital bed.

He underwent two heart surgeries.

Both gave him more time.

But neither could guarantee that his condition would remain stable.

His future had always been shrouded in uncertainty.

Yet somehow, he had never allowed that uncertainty to make him bitter.

Then, before either of them had reached their teenage years, tragedy struck once again.

Their parents passed away, leaving the two siblings alone in the world.

Despite his own fragile health and the grief of losing their parents, Lee Shin took it upon himself to care for her.

He was still a child himself, yet he shouldered responsibilities far beyond his years. He was determined to ensure his little sister never felt abandoned or went without anything she needed.

Never once did he consider her a burden.

Even on days when his weak heart left him exhausted, he would smile and reassure her that everything would be alright.

Accepting the limited time he had, he never pursued a romantic relationship, knowing that the uncertainty surrounding his fragile health made his future unpredictable.

He felt it would be unfair to ask someone to love him when he couldn’t promise how much time they would have together.

He lived carefully.

But he loved wholeheartedly.

And then he met Han Yue Ling.

Hana could still remember the day she first introduced Yue Ling to her older brother.

At the time, Shin had appeared completely indifferent. He had greeted her friend politely, exchanged a few words, and carried on as though their meeting had been nothing out of the ordinary.

But Hana had known her brother too well to be fooled.

Whenever she mentioned Yue Ling’s name, his attention would immediately shift toward her. He would pretend to be occupied with something else, yet somehow, he never missed a word.

And whenever Hana shared something amusing about her friend, a faint smile would tug at his lips.

A smile he always tried to hide.

Hana had found his behavior rather amusing.

Because of his weak heart and uncertain future, Shin had never dated, nor had he shown any interest in finding someone to love.

So when he unexpectedly confessed one day that he liked someone, she was stunned.

Her brother?

The same brother who had spent years avoiding the very thought of romance?

Naturally, she had bombarded him with questions.

Who was the girl? Where had they met? How long had he liked her?

But Shin had merely smiled and skillfully dodged every question.

No matter how much she pestered him, he refused to reveal who the girl was.

It wasn’t until one particular evening that Hana finally discovered the truth.

Yue Ling had come over to their house, just as she had done countless times before.

Shin had been sitting in the living room when they entered.

He looked up at the sound of their voices.

And the moment his eyes landed on Yue Ling, something in his expression changed.

His gaze softened.

A warmth spread across his features, and a smile appeared on his lips before he could conceal it.

It was such a simple reaction.

Yet Hana had never seen her brother look at anyone that way.

For a boy who had spent most of his life preparing himself for an uncertain future, he suddenly looked as though he had found something worth looking forward to.

Hana stood beside her friend, watching him with growing realization.

’So that’s why he wouldn’t tell me.’

The mysterious girl who had captured her brother’s heart had been right beside her all along.

When Shin noticed Hana staring at him, he quickly looked away, pretending to be interested in something on the table.

But it was too late.

She had already seen the unmistakable affection in his eyes.

And in that moment, Hana understood something that made her heart ache with both happiness and worry.

Her brother, who had always been so careful about letting anyone into his heart, had fallen in love with her dearest friend.

He had spent years refusing to love because he feared leaving someone behind.

Yet somehow, without even realizing it, Yue Ling had become the one person he couldn’t bear to keep at a distance.

The girl he was in love with.

Completely.

Hopelessly.

Hana remembered teasing him.

’Does she even know you exist?’

Shin had laughed.

’She will.’

There had been something different about him after that.

A brightness.

A determination.

For someone who had spent much of his life being told what he couldn’t do, he had finally found something he wanted badly enough to take a chance.

So he gathered his courage.

And asked Yue Ling out.

Hana remembered how nervous he had been.

He had changed his clothes three times.

Practiced what he wanted to say.

Then abandoned every rehearsed word the moment he stood in front of her.

Somehow, it worked.

Yue Ling said yes.

And from that day forward, Hana watched her brother fall harder in love.

He wanted to make Yue Ling smile.

Whenever she was troubled, he found ways to cheer her up.

Whenever she was exhausted, he reminded her to rest.

Whenever she doubted herself, he stood beside her.

He knew his heart was fragile.

He knew his future was uncertain.

But he refused to let fear dictate every choice he made.

Especially when it came to loving her.

Hana remembered asking him once whether he was afraid.

They had been sitting together on the balcony of their old home.

Shin had looked toward the evening sky.

’Of course I am.’

She had frowned.

’Then why are you doing this?’

He had smiled.

’Because I don’t want to spend my life regretting the things I was too afraid to do.’

Hana had looked at him for a long time.

Then he said something she never forgot.

’I don’t know how much time I’ll have, Hana. But while I’m here, I want to make her happy.’

And he did.

For ten years, he loved Yue Ling.

Through good days.

Through difficult ones.

Through the uncertainty that always lingered over his health.

Then one day, he gathered his courage again.

This time, he asked her to marry him.

She said yes.

Hana remembered the happiness on his face.

The way he had called her afterward, barely able to contain his excitement.

They began planning a future.

A wedding.

A home.

A life together.

Shin had spoken about growing old with Yue Ling.

About traveling with her.

About the little things they would do when they finally had a home of their own.

He knew nothing was guaranteed.

But he dared to dream anyway.

And for a while, everyone around him dared to dream with him.

Then came the day of their wedding.

A day that should have been filled with happiness, laughter, and the beginning of a beautiful future.

Instead, it became the day their world shattered.

The phone call.

The frantic rush to the hospital.

The suffocating silence as she waited for someone to tell her that everything would be alright.

And then came the words she would spend the rest of her life wishing she had never heard.

Words so cruel that, for a moment, she couldn’t comprehend their meaning.

She remembered shaking her head, refusing to believe what the doctors were telling her.

It had to be a mistake.

A terrible misunderstanding.

Perhaps she would wake up and discover it had all been a nightmare.

Because her brother had been happy.

He had finally allowed himself to love, to dream of a future he had once been too afraid to imagine.

He was supposed to get married that day.

He was supposed to grow old with the woman he loved.

But none of that would ever happen.

And no matter how desperately Hana wished otherwise, he was never coming home.

Her brother was gone.

Just like that, the future he had dreamed of vanished.

The wedding never happened.

The home they had imagined was never built.

And Yue Ling was left carrying the weight of a love that had ended far too soon.

Hana closed her eyes.

Even after three years, the memory still hurt.

She missed him.

His laughter.

His teasing.

The way he used to ruffle her hair whenever she was upset, deliberately messing it up until she swatted his hand away in annoyance. He would laugh, and no matter how determined she was to stay angry, she always ended up laughing with him.

The way he noticed when something was bothering her, even when she insisted she was fine. He never forced her to talk. Instead, he would sit beside her, sometimes bringing her favorite snack, and patiently wait until she was ready to tell him what was wrong.

The way he always asked whether Yue Ling had eaten, even when he was the one who needed someone looking after him.

And above all, the comfort of knowing she had an older brother who would always protect her.

But now, no matter how desperately she wished to hear his voice or feel his hand gently ruffle her hair one more time, there was no one left to answer when she called him.

Her hand unconsciously moved toward her chest.

Park Min Lee noticed. He gently rubbed her shoulder.

”Hana.”

She opened her eyes. A tear slipped down her cheek. She quickly wiped it away.

”I’m alright.”

Her husband didn’t argue. He simply held her closer.

Hana looked toward the sky again.

Somewhere beyond those drifting clouds was the brother she wished she could see one more time.

’Shin...’

Her lips trembled.

’Are you watching?’

She remembered Yue Ling’s smile.

The way her eyes brightened whenever Lu Tian approached.

The quiet trust between them.

And the way Lu Tian had declared his love without the slightest hesitation.

A bittersweet smile touched Hana’s lips.

’She’s happy.’

For so long, Hana had worried that Yue Ling would never allow herself to love again.

That she would remain trapped between beautiful memories and unbearable grief.

But today, she had seen the answer for herself.

Yue Ling hadn’t forgotten Shin.

She never would.

But she had found the courage to keep living.

To open her heart.

To dream of a future again.

And Hana knew her brother would never have wanted anything less for her.

”He would have liked Lu Tian,” she whispered.

Park Min Lee looked down at her.

”You think so?”

Hana nodded.

”Maybe he’d have been a little jealous at first.”

Her husband smiled.

”Probably.”

She laughed softly through her tears.

”But once he saw how much Lu Tian loves her...”

Her voice faded.

She swallowed.

”He would’ve been relieved.”

Park Min Lee gently kissed her temple.

”I think so too.”

Hana rested her head against his shoulder.

For several moments, they watched the sky in silence.

Then she drew a deep breath.

”I’ll always wish for her happiness.”

Her voice was quiet, but certain.

”No matter who stands beside her, or where life takes her...”

She smiled through her tears.

”I just want her to be happy.”

Park Min Lee held her closer.

And beneath the fading afternoon sunlight, Lee Hana silently offered the same wish to the brother she had lost.

’Don’t worry about her anymore.’

’Someone is holding her hand now.’

’And this time, I hope she’ll never have to let go.’
