Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 540: Chapter 535: What She Came For

Location:Zhū’kethara — Kael’thoren Fortress

Date/Time:23 Ashwhisper, 9942 AZI — late afternoon

Realm:Upper Realm

Ren heard her before he saw the city.

Zhū’kethara is cut into stone and gives everything back, which is why nobody has ever managed to arrive there quietly and why the fortress has never needed a bell. Sound comes off the upper terraces and down the cut in long flat sheets, and a man on the approach road learns to read the city by what it returns to him: carts, water, the forge quarter, the ragged clatter of the eastern market at the hour it closes.

What came down the cut at him now was none of those.

It was wingbeat. High up, unhurried, and enormous, and it had the slow doubled sound that a very large body makes when it is holding position over one point of ground instead of going anywhere — the sound of something circling because it has been circling for some time and has nothing better to do.

The column behind him did not react, because they had been four days on the road at the pace of two men who should not have been riding at all, and because the rider had come out from the fortress to meet them at the last waymark and everyone with ears had already had the whole of it there.

Kaelen came up alongside without being called.

”Two days,” he said.

”Whose?”

”Black. Female. Came in two mornings ago and asked the wards for guest-right by the correct form, which nobody in the fortress has heard spoken aloud in a very long time and which the wards accepted, because it is the correct form.” Kaelen was looking straight ahead. ”She gave her name as Cangwei. She gave her house as Heiteng’s. She has taken nothing but water, has not once asked to be shown anything, and has spent two days in the upper court sitting where she can see the gate.”

”Sitting.”

”Waiting, Da’Ren. She has been waiting for you specifically, and she has done it correctly, and she has not made one single mistake in two days, which is the part I do not like.”

***

Ren did not receive her for an hour and a quarter.

The gate opens on the lower court, and the lower court smells of stone dust and the iron the forge quarter puts in the air, and that afternoon it also smelled of four days of road and of two men who had been carried the last of it.

Dovan got himself off his own horse, which he had spent four days announcing he was going to do, and made it three steps, and Ilvaren had him before his knee finished going. Nobody said anything about it. Dovan looked more insulted by the three steps than by anything the chamber had done to him, which Ren took as the best report he was going to get.

Theron did not get off his horse at all. They lifted him down.

That was the part the fortress saw, and Ren watched it be seen: a Kael’shira of the king’s own blood kin coming through the gate under somebody else’s hands, in daylight, in front of the yard.

Maelith met them at the wing door and did not ask a single question until she had both men inside and flat, which is why she had outlived everyone who ever tried to hurry her.

”The soldier will keep. He has been mended already and mended properly, and what he needs now is time and somebody sitting on him.” She was already turning. ”This one has nothing left in him at all. What did he spend it on?”

”A crush injury a thousand feet down, and he did all of it himself, and he would not stop.”

”For how long?”

”Long.”

Maelith said something in the old register that Ren did not catch and had not heard used seriously in a very long time, and went in.

Ren stayed.

There was nothing for him to do in that room, and everybody in it knew it, and nobody suggested he leave. He stood against the wall for the better part of an hour and a quarter with his hands empty, in a healing wing, while a woman older than his house worked on a half-human who had emptied himself into a Kael’thoren on a floor under the eastern margin.

Two hundred paces above him, a black dragon watched the whole of it from the upper terrace and did not once call down.

Theron opened his eyes eventually and said something to Maelith that made her make a noise, and Ren went up.

***

Cangwei had chosen the shallow end of the upper court, where the wall drops away and the whole cut is visible down to the eastern gate, and she had chosen it because from there she could see everything he had just done.

Standing when he came in was not something she had to do, and it was correct, and Kaelen was right that the correctness was the worrying part.

Human form, and tall in it — taller than Ren, which is uncommon and which she made no attempt to soften. Black hair worn back off a hard-boned face, a long dark coat of no house’s cut. And mercury eyes, bright as spilled metal, and no dragon of her house has ever had any other kind, which meant that everything Ren was about to refuse to tell her was written into the front of her skull where she had to carry it around.

”Da’Ren.”

”Cangwei.”

”I have taken your water for two days and given you nothing for it,” she said. ”I would like to correct that first. My house has no claim on yours. I am not here as an embassy and I have not come to ask you for anything that costs you. Whatever I say after this, that stays true.”

”Understood.” He heard it come out of his own mouth, flat and administrative, and disliked it. ”Sit, if you want to sit.”

”I have been sitting.”

The first time, she asked it as a guest.

”Where is Heiteng?”

Ren let the silence run its natural length, which is a skill a man acquires early among people who will not lie their way out of anything, and then said: ”That is his to tell you.”

There was no flinch and no blink, and nothing put into the gap. She waited it all the way through, until it was clear that the waiting itself was the second question, and then she asked the second question out loud anyway.

”Is he alive?”

And there it was, and he walked straight into it, because it was the one thing he could give her, and he wanted to give her something.

”He is alive.”

Cangwei nodded once, slowly.

He understood what he had done about half a heartbeat after he had done it, and it was too late, and there was nothing to be gained by trying to take it back, and she was already somewhere else.

”Thank you,” Cangwei said, and she meant it, and it was worse than if she had not. ”That is more than his own elders have had out of him since he went. May I have the third one?”

”Ask it.”

”Is he held?”

”He is not held.”

”You answer that one quickly.”

”Because it is true.”

”So is he is alive,” she said, ”and you did not answer that one quickly at all. You answered it like a man deciding how much of a thing he is permitted to say.” She had not raised her voice by any measure he could find. ”Da’Ren, I have been in this fortress two days, and I have watched your people for all of them, and an hour ago I watched two of your men come through that gate under other people’s hands, and you did not send either of them ahead of you, and you did not come back out of that wing until somebody inside it let you. One of them is not even a demon. That is not a small thing to have seen. I would like you to understand that whatever I decide about all of this, I am not going to decide it about you.”

”Then decide nothing.”

”That is not one of the things available to me.”

***

The cloth was in the lower storehouse because there was nowhere else to put that much of anything, and she asked to see the yard on the way down, and he let her, because there was nothing in the yard and he had stopped being able to think of a reason to say no to a woman who had asked for nothing in two days.

That was the mistake. Not the sentence in the upper court. This.

The storehouse doors stood open for the count that had been running since the last consignment came up. Bolts down the left-hand side — three consignments in, and nothing like the last of it — and on the right the few hundred coats the cutting shop had got finished out of them so far, hung in rows against an order of nine thousand that was going to eat the winter. A quartermaster with a slate was working his way along the third rack and did not look up, because a quartermaster with a count in his head does not look up for anybody.

Cangwei stopped in the doorway.

Then she walked past the finished rows entirely, went to the bolts, turned back a corner of the top one with two fingers, and looked at the wrong side of it.

The face of it she did not look at once.

”Where did this come from?”

”It came in through that gate,” Ren said.

”That is not what I asked.”

”It is what I am going to say.”

Cangwei held the fold up to the light of the door and ran her thumbnail across the reverse, and her face did a thing that Ren had never in all his years seen a dragon’s face do, which was to go entirely still while the rest of her stayed exactly as it had been.

”How much more of it is coming?”

”That is not a thing I discuss in a yard.”

”No.” She turned the fold over and looked at the reverse again, and then a second time, which she had not needed to do the first time and did anyway. ”What are you paying for it?”

Nothing.

The word arrived before he had gone looking for it, which was how he learned he had been holding the answer for a year without once putting it in a sentence. A prefect had come to him twice about a consignment that arrived up the long way with no bill on it, wanting to know what to enter in the roll, and Ren had told him to write a courtesy and stop asking, and had been pleased with the phrasing.

”What my house pays for its cloth is my house’s business.”

”Cangwei.”

”I am going to ask you one more, and then I will stop.” She did stop, for a moment, and Ren watched her choose the smallest version of whatever she had. ”Have you ever met the weaver?”

”No.”

Cangwei put the fold down.

And that was the whole of it, and she did it the way a person puts a lid back on something, and Ren stood in his own storehouse and understood two things at once — that she had arrived at the end of a road while she was standing at that rack, and that she had decided in the same second not to walk him down it.

Ren waited her out. She was better at it than he was, and she still spoke first, and he understood afterward that she had chosen to.

”I have seen this finish twice in my life.” She was already moving her hand off the bolt. ”Once in the room where it was being done. It is not a common cloth, Da’Ren. It does not travel, and a house that makes it does not make it in pieces for anybody. Whatever you are being sent, you are being sent a great deal of care.”

Ren said nothing, because the thing that had just happened inside his chest needed his whole attention and none of it could be allowed to reach his face.

He had not asked. That was the thing worth looking at, and he made himself look at it, standing there, with a quartermaster counting behind him. A king does not fail to notice where a year of anything came from. Somewhere in the first month he had decided not to find out, and had put the decision in a roll in one word.

In a year of it he had never once come down these stairs and put his hand on the cloth. It was the first thing she had done, inside four minutes of being shown the room.

”Whose is it?” he asked.

And she looked at him — for the first time in the entire conversation actually looked at him, mercury and all, with her hand still on the bolt — and he watched her decide that the question was a real one, and he watched her file that under something, and he watched her not care.

”You do not know,” Cangwei said.

”No.”

”You are asking me.” She let that stand where he could look at it. ”I have been here two days, and nobody in this fortress has been able to tell me either.” She put both hands behind her, which somehow made it worse. ”Heiteng went somewhere he did not name to the council, and has not written to any of them since. His sworn brother knows he is alive and will not say where. And a house that does not sell to strangers is sending its work to somebody, in pieces, through your gate.”

”You have arranged those in the order that suits you.”

”I have arranged them in the order they happened.”

”That is not the same as—”

”Da’Ren.” She said it without heat at all. ”My eyes are this color because of what silver queens are to my house. Every one of us carries that on the front of the skull for the whole of a life, and there is exactly one reason for it. And Juteng was Xueteng’s mate, and the elders took him and held him over her to make her go on being what they had made her, and when she found the one way out that was hers to take, she could not take it without taking him. Heiteng was a youngling. He had spent decades around her before any of it. His house has called it an execution ever since, and he has never once corrected them.” A pause, and she let the whole length of it run, and she did not look away. ”Tell me I am wrong about one single link and I will get in the air and go home. You are a demon. You will not say a false thing to be rid of me. That is the entire reason I have asked it in that shape.”

There were eleven things he could have said, and he went through the whole of them standing there while she waited for one.

Nine were false. A demon does not say a false thing. Not because he is prevented — Ren had watched other races do it easily all his life and had never once envied them the facility — but because his people had settled it before there was a realm to settle it in: a mouth that will say anything is worth nothing, and they had held that line through the programme and the war and every stretch since of having very little else left to hold. He had not lied since he was a youngling. He was not going to start now, in a storehouse, to be rid of her.

The tenth would have satisfied her completely and was the worst of the eleven, because it was true and it was not his to spend.

And the eleventh was: there is a silver queen, and I have known it longer than my brother has been gone, and I do not know her name, and I have never once been able to make the count come out at one.

Ren said: ”I will not.”

”No,” Cangwei said. ”I did not think you would.”

And she took one of the finished coats off the rack behind her, folded it once, precisely, and walked toward the door.

***

Ren got in front of her at the threshold and put a hand flat on the frame.

”That stays.”

”It is a piece of cloth.”

”It stays.”

”It is the cloth and the cut, on one object, and small enough to carry,” Cangwei said. ”Then take it.”

He took it.

Her hand stayed on it, and for perhaps two seconds it was only two people holding opposite ends of a folded coat in a doorway, and then the Vor’kalth moved in him — further than it had moved in a very long time and nowhere near as far as it wanted to, because it had not slept since she landed and had spent two days facing a door in a house it had no business watching — and she felt the edge of it, and answered that much, and the doorway stopped being a doorway.

There was no room to shift, and both of them knew it. What she did instead was set her feet and refuse to be moved out of a threshold by a man who had never once in his life failed to move something, and the storehouse frame — old, dressed stone, cut before the eastern wall — took the whole of that between them and came down.

It came down in three pieces, and the lintel went through the top of the third rack, and four hundred coats went across the floor of the yard in a gray slide, and the quartermaster got clear and kept hold of his slate, because a man with a count in his head does not drop it for a wall.

Ren had the coat.

He had it because he was always going to have it, because nothing on this world had ever been able to keep hold of the other end of a thing he had decided to take, and there was no version of the last four seconds in which that had been in question, and both of them had known it before either of them touched it.

Cangwei stood in the wreck of his storehouse door with dust on her shoulders and looked at the coat in his hands.

”You did that,” she said, ”for a piece of cloth.”

Ren did not answer.

”You did not do it for your brother’s name. You did not do it when I said the word held in your own upper court. You did it for the one object in this fortress that can be carried out of it and shown to somebody.” She brushed the dust off, once, without hurry. ”I do not need the coat, Da’Ren. I needed to know whether you would let it leave. Thank you.”

***

She was in the air before the sun was off the upper terrace, and she went east, which was neither the way she had come nor the way home.

Ren stood in the wreck of his own storehouse door and watched her until the shape of her was off the cut.

Then he did the thing she had done.

He turned the coat inside out. The reverse was gray, and it was smooth, and there was nothing else about it. He ran his thumb across it the way she had run hers, slowly, along the grain and then against it, and it told him nothing at all. He did it again and pressed harder, and it went on telling him nothing.

Twice in my life, she had said, and had stood in the room where it was done, and had put it down without finishing the sentence.

Behind him the quartermaster started the count again from the top, because there was no other way to do it now.

Ren stayed where he was with a piece of cloth in his hands that a stranger could read across a yard, and he could not read with both hands on it, and he thought about a prefect who had come to him twice and been sent away, and about a word he had chosen himself and been pleased with.
