Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 498: Chapter 493: Walking Out

Location:Vel’thari Containment → Obsidian Academy Grounds

Date/Time:1 Frostforge,9942 AZI — Day 365

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The seal cracked at dawn.

Jayde felt it through the mantis first — every sensory pit flaring at once, all of them locking upward. The ambient corruption that had been the constant background of three hundred and sixty-five days thinned. The formation work holding the sealed dimension closed was cycling down, the year complete, the mechanism doing what it had done every fifty years since before the Academy had a name.

The bracelets woke.

Across all six bases, in every corridor and firing position and stripped-down pocket, the students who had one felt the pull start. The safe-point insertion that had put them into the containment a year ago running in reverse — the formation reaching down through each bracelet’s anchor, finding the wearer, preparing to take them back to the staging ground.

Jayde had no bracelet. She had been pushed in without one. No landing point, no merit tracking, no extraction anchor. The formation that was about to move fourteen hundred people to the surface had no record that she was down here at all.

”Commander.” Meifen. Steady, the way she was steady about everything now. ”It’s starting.”

”How long?”

”Minutes. When they finish cycling, everyone wearing one goes.”

”And anyone not wearing one stays.”

Nobody said anything for a moment, because there were three of them without bracelets, and one of them was a Charling.

”There’s a window.” Eden’s voice. The blue eyes level, Zhi wound tight enough at her throat that the scales had gone gray. ”The formation has to unseal the upper boundary to cycle the anchors. While it’s open, the passage is physically open. We walk through it.”

”How long is the window?”

”I don’t know. Minutes. Possibly less.”

Jayde looked at her army. Fourteen hundred and three soldiers in formation, bracelets humming, about to be gone between one breath and the next. And she was about to lose every one of them unless she found a hole in a mountain and got through it first.

”Companies. Listen.” The Commander’s voice, pitched to carry without shouting, the way it had carried across six fronts. ”Your bracelets are going to extract you. You’ll come out at the Academy staging ground. Form up there. Hold. I’m coming through on foot.”

Meifen’s eyes narrowed. ”And if the window closes?”

”Then you tell the Academy that Commander Ashford sends her regards and will see them in fifty years.” A beat. ”It won’t close. Move.”

The bracelets fired.

The army went out like a tide. One moment the tunnels held fourteen hundred people; the next they held the shape of where those people had been standing. Company by company, anchor by anchor, gone.

The containment was empty. Jayde. Eden. Zhi. The mantis.

”Up,” Jayde said. ”Now.”

***

The mantis ran.

Eden gripped the wing-casing ridge behind Jayde. Zhi flattened himself against her neck. The passage climbed, and the stone changed as it climbed — formation-cut architecture giving way to natural rock, the corruption dropping off, the bioluminescence dying back and being replaced by something else.

Something warmer.

The passage angled up. The mantis climbed. Light came through cracks that were widening as the seal peeled back, and then the cracks were a gap and the gap was an opening and the opening was not glowing.

It was lit.

The mantis came out onto flat ground and stopped, and Jayde did not give it any order to move.

***

Sunlight.

The mantis’s chitin caught it and came apart into color — translucent plates refracting, throwing blues and golds and greens across the stone in patterns the creature had never once worn underground. It made a sound Jayde had never heard from it. Not the low hum. Something resonant and full and startled, a note pulled out of a being encountering the exact thing it had been built and starved and set free to see.

Behind her, Eden made no sound at all.

Jayde turned. The doctor had slid down off the mantis and was standing on wet earth with her face tipped up and her eyes shut, and she was not looking at the sun, because she couldn’t. She was just standing in it.

Two lives. A woman who had spent fifty years mourning a commander she hadn’t been able to reach, who had built a machine to steal her back out of the last second before the blast and died when it failed, who had woken up in a dead girl’s body on a world she had never heard the name of — and who had spent the last year underground in a stone tube killing insects and stitching soldiers shut with her hands red to the wrist.

”It’s cold,” Eden said. Her voice cracked in the middle of it. ”Jayde. It’s cold.”

There was wind. That was the part Jayde had not braced for. Wind, carrying pine and snowmelt and the specific nothing-taste of air that had not been filtered through a mountain, and the ground under the mantis’s feet was damp, and there was a horizon.

And then both bonds hit her at once.

They had been wire for a year. Thinned to almost nothing by a dimensional seal built to let nothing through, present only as two faint stubborn facts she had checked on the way other people check a pulse. Crossing the boundary did not restore them gently.

They came back like a struck bell.

Reiko. Somewhere impossibly far east, at Oceanus, a shadowbeast came up off the ground mid-stride with a mercury rune blazing and every instinct he possessed pointed at a single direction. She felt him find her. She felt the exact instant he understood, and the sound he made was not something the bond could carry, so what came through instead was pure and wordless and shaped like coming.

Yinxin. Nearer. A silver dragon in a merchant’s house on the outskirts of Obsidian City, and the contract between them snapping taut so hard that Jayde’s breath went out of her.

She reached for the third thing out of habit, the way she had reached for it every day for a year.

The Pavilion was dark.

Isha was still in cessation. He had shut himself down and handed her the sequence to bring him back, and he was not going to wake up because the seal had opened. He was going to wake up when she did it. And she was standing on a mountainside in the sun with a year of war behind her and an army waiting on a plateau, and she could not do it here.

[Later,] Kazren said, from the soul-space, dry as sand and entirely without sympathy, which was the only reason it helped. [You do not get to do everything today. Pick the thing that is on fire.]

Jayde put her palm on the mantis’s head-plate.

”Come on,” she said. ”Let’s go get our people.”

***

On the ridge above the Academy, something moved.

Amaya had held position for a year. Mottled grey-and-silver fur against grey-and-silver stone, cycling the Flicker against the terrain in shifts, one eye silver and one gold and both of them on the portal since the day her charge went through it.

The portal cycled. The staging ground below filled with people between one heartbeat and the next.

Then, on the eastern slope, a shape came out of the mountain that had no business coming out of the mountain, and there was a woman on its back, and the essence signature was masked by an artifact but Amaya did not need essence-sight.

She needed eyes. She had those.

The Panthera rose. Twelve months of holding a technique and a position, and the body came up off the stone with the stiff, painful, entirely unhurried grace of something ancient and stubborn and devoted past any reasonable measure. Golden runic markings caught the morning light across her nose.

She sent one thought down the link to Canirr, who would carry it to Suki and Prota.

She’s out. She’s alive. She brought friends.

A pause. Then, from two hundred kilometers east:

How many friends?

All of them.

***

The staging ground was a wide plateau on the mountain’s eastern face — the same stone they had all stood on a year ago, when they had been students.

Fourteen hundred and three people had just appeared on it in the space of thirty seconds.

Nobody screamed. That was the first thing the Academy noticed and could not process. In every returning cycle anyone could remember, the survivors came back scattered and staggering and half of them went straight to the ground. These ones arrived in company formation, armed, armored, silent, and did not move.

And then, one by one, they looked up.

Meifen was the first, because Meifen was always first. Head back. Hazel eyes wide open into a sky she had not seen in twelve months, and she did not blink, and the water ran down the sides of her face without her doing anything about it.

Ruifen didn’t look up at all. Third Company’s commander stood with her eyes closed and her face tilted just slightly, taking it on the skin instead, the way a person eats slowly when they have been hungry for a long time.

Deng Hao sat down. Not collapsed. Sat, the way you sit when your legs have stopped participating, palms flat on sun-warm stone, breathing.

Feng Lian laughed. One short surprised sound, and then she clapped her hand over her mouth like she had cursed in a temple.

Bai Shu found the two people from her shield wall who were still alive and did not say anything to either of them, and the three of them stood in the light together with their shoulders touching.

Someone in Second Company started crying and did not stop, and nobody, in fourteen hundred people, told them to.

The Academy watched an army stand in the sun and come apart quietly, and had no procedure for that either.

***

Then Jayde rode in.

The mantis walked onto the plateau from the eastern slope — up out of a passage that bracelet-holders never used and had never been told existed. It stepped onto flat stone and stopped, sensory pits sweeping the crowd with the flat curiosity of a predator taking inventory of a new environment.

Every sound on the plateau stopped at once.

Then someone screamed. A student in the observation crowd, a girl who had never been inside the Harrowing and knew only what the lectures said: the sealed dimension holds insects. Dangerous insects. Insects we go down and cull. One of them was standing on the staging ground in the morning light, it was the size of a horse, and there was a person on its back.

The scream started a cascade. Instructors at the perimeter dropped into stances, Inferno-grade essence flaring in their palms. Officials went backward off their processing stations. A medical team dropped two stretchers and ran.

The soldiers didn’t move.

They stood in their companies with their crossbows at rest and watched the Academy lose its mind about a creature they had walked past every day for months, with the tired patience of people who had genuinely forgotten it was supposed to be frightening.

The mantis didn’t react either. The pits read the blazing cultivation signatures and the running and the noise, and dismissed all of it. None of these organisms were Charlings. Nothing here registered.

It was magnificent. That was the part the crowd would remember afterward, once the fear wore off and the story started getting told in the dining halls. The mantis in sunlight was not the dull translucent thing it had been underground. The chitin took the morning apart — prismatic, shifting, blues and golds rippling across the plates like oil on water. The blade-arms, folded against the thorax, gleamed like polished steel. The sensory pits glowed amber-warm.

Terrifying and beautiful in the same object, and a woman sitting on top of it with one hand on the head-plate, watching a hundred cultivators panic with the specific calm of someone who had ridden this animal through a sixty-day war and considered a shouting crowd to be a substantial downgrade.

”Hold your fire.” Not shouted. The Commander’s projection, calibrated over months to cut through corridor noise without strain. ”This creature is under my command. It is not a threat. Lower your stances.”

The instructors hesitated. Essence crackling. The mantis three meters from the nearest one, blade-arms folded, tracking his signature with interest and no alarm whatsoever.

Meifen’s hand rested on her crossbow. Not drawing. Present. Hazel eyes moving between the instructors and her Commander, waiting to find out whether the people who were supposed to be welcoming them home were going to open on her mount.

It was Zheng Wei who ended it. From First Company, third rank, the woman who had fumbled a reload on the opening night and been saved at two meters by a man whose name she had finally learned off a wall. Not loud. Conversational. Pitched to carry.

”It killed more Charlings than the rest of us combined. I’d lower the stances.”

Something went through the formations that was not laughter but stood very close to it. The shared understanding of people who knew exactly how this looked from outside and had stopped caring some months ago.

The nearest instructor lowered his hands. Then the next. Then the rest — not because Jayde had ordered it, but because fourteen hundred exhausted soldiers standing casually beside the thing the Academy was afraid of made the fear look absurd.

***

Two Grade 2 students came through the crowd against the flow of it.

Ryo got there first. Grey eyes, bronze skin, the controlled silence he wore like armor — and it was gone off him entirely, stripped away by the sight of her, and what was underneath was a boy who had spent a year not being able to do anything.

Kiran was half a step behind, sea-green eyes, the braided cord still at his wrist.

Neither of them had left the portal site the day she went in. Jayde had not known that. She learned it in about a second and a half, from the state of them, from the fact that they were standing at the front of a crowd that had been pushed back forty meters, from Ryo’s face.

He stopped a meter short of the mantis, which was a meter closer than any instructor on the plateau had managed.

”You were gone a year,” he said.

”I know.”

”We waited.”

”I know,” Jayde said. ”Thank you.”

Kiran looked past her at fourteen hundred armed soldiers in company formation and then back at the girl on the insect, and said, with the flat bewilderment of a person who had rehearsed a very different reunion: ”What did you do down there?”

”Held a line.”

***

An Academy official worked up the nerve to approach. An older man in administrative robes with a clipboard and the specific expression of a bureaucrat facing a thing his forms had no column for.

”Student — Ashford?”

”Commander Ashford,” Meifen said from First Company. Quiet. Not negotiable.

The official looked at Meifen. At the crossbow. At the mantis. At fourteen hundred and three soldiers standing in formation behind a Grade 2 student sitting on a Charling.

”I — the bracelets. We have to process the bracelets.”

”You’ll process them.” Jayde swung down off the mantis. Her boots hit Academy stone for the first time in a year, and she noticed, distantly, that it did not feel like anything. ”First, there’s something else.”

She opened her ring.

Forty-three alloy caskets came out onto the plateau in four rows, laid down in the sunlight with the sound of metal settling on stone.

Behind her, without any order being given, the companies began doing the same. Meifen. Ruifen. Squad leaders, shooters, medics, clearance crews — every soldier who had a ring with space in it stepping forward and setting down what they carried.

It took a long time. Nobody hurried it.

One hundred and ninety-seven sealed caskets, laid out in rows on a plateau in the morning light, in front of an Academy that had never in its history had a single body come back out of that mountain.

The plateau went completely silent. Even the crowd.

”One hundred and ninety-seven,” Jayde said. ”Every one of them died holding the seal. Every one of them is going home to their family. I need a receiving area, a registrar, and someone who can begin contacting next of kin today.”

The official’s clipboard had come down to his side without him noticing.

”Caskets,” he said.

”We bring our dead home. All of them.” Jayde looked at him. Brown eyes — veiled, disguised, nothing of the gold beneath them showing — holding him with the patience of someone explaining something very simple to a man who was taking too long. ”The Harrowing has taken names off this mountain for a thousand years and given back a list. That stops now. Their families deserve their children. Start there.”

He opened his mouth. Closed it. Looked at the rows.

”Yes,” he said. ”I’ll — yes.”

***

The Headmaster came out of the archway at the plateau’s edge and did not come any closer.

Qin. Thin white-translucent hair, pale gray eyes, a nose that had been broken twice by people who were no longer alive. He stood with his hands behind his back and he did not look at the mantis, and he did not look at the caskets, and he did not look at Jayde.

He looked at the formations, and his lips moved slightly, and Jayde understood that he was counting.

Two thousand five hundred students had gone into that mountain. He was standing in front of fourteen hundred and three of them, in armor that the Academy had not issued, holding weapons the Academy did not make, arranged in a structure the Academy had not taught, and one hundred and ninety-seven boxes on the ground that his institution had no ritual for.

He finished counting. The pale gray eyes came up and found her, and stayed.

He didn’t say anything. Neither did she.

But something passed between the girl on the plateau and the old man in the archway, and what it was, precisely, was this: I know what is under that mountain, and I know what it takes to hold it, and I do not know what you are, and I am going to have to find out.

Then Qin turned and went back inside, and the plateau exhaled.

***

In a modest merchant’s house on the outskirts of Obsidian City, Yinxin dropped a cup.

She had been standing at the map wall with a blue thread in her hand when the contract came back — not thinned, not a wire, not the faint stubborn hum she had gone down to the cellar to check on every night for a year.

Whole. Loud. There.

The cup broke on the floor, and she did not look at it. The golden eyes had already closed, and the silver-white head had already bowed, and the Silver Dragon Queen stood absolutely still in the middle of her operations room and permitted herself, for the length of about four seconds, to be something other than composed.

Then she opened her eyes.

”Tianxin,” she said. ”Get your brother and your sister. Pendants on.”

Three sets of footsteps came at a dead run.

”Where are we going, Mother?”

Yinxin was already reaching for her robe.

”To collect her.”

***

The mantis pressed its head-plate against Jayde’s palm.

Around them, the Academy had begun to move — a registrar hurrying out with a ledger, medics approaching the rows of caskets with an uncertainty that was going to take them years to lose, fourteen hundred soldiers standing in the sun and letting the light land on them.

The creature hummed. Not the low, deep sound from the corridors. The new one. The resonant one it had found when the light first touched its chitin, and had not stopped making since.

And a very long way down, under a great deal of stone, through a link that ran clean across a seal built to let nothing through, something enormous and entirely alone saw the sun.
