Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 446: Chapter 441: First Light

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — moving toward the fortress ruins

Date/Time:2–3 Frostforge, 9941 AZI — Days 2–3 of the Harrowing

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The data came back the way feeling comes back to a limb that’s been slept on — wrong first, then sharp, then simply there.

Behind her eyes, the thing Isha had poured into her was finally settling. For two cycles it had been a flood with no banks: coordinates and caste-counts and corruption gradients all sliding into one another, every fragment screaming for the front of her attention at once. Now the flood had banks. Whatever had torn through her mental shields had begun knitting the breaks closed, and the new tissue held like scar tissue: tighter than it should, ridged, but holding. She put the recovery at thirty percent. Maybe a hair past.

Thirty percent was enough to find the lines.

The fortress sat at the end of a bearing she could now hold in her head without it dissolving: south-southwest, three folds of broken ground between here and there, a structure the data named a forward station and the corruption maps named intact enough. Two water sources along the route — both flagged, both biological, neither safe to drink without the membrane filters in her ring. Patrol density thinned the closer she ran the line to the station, which told her something about why the builders had put the station where they had. High ground. Sightlines. A place chosen by people who’d expected to be hunted.

Forward operating base, the cold part of her noted. Somebody built this to last a war.

”You’re tracking better.” Eden’s voice came low, pitched for the half-meter between them and no farther. She’d crouched at Jayde’s shoulder, blue eyes moving over Jayde’s face with the unhurried attention of a medic reading a chart. ”Eyes following the horizon instead of swimming. Thirty percent?”

”Enough to navigate.” Jayde rolled her neck until the last spike of the headache dulled to a pressure behind the ear. ”Enough to fight.”

Eden held the look a moment longer, then nodded once and let it go. No fuss. They’d long since burned through the years where either of them needed reassuring that the other could carry weight while wounded.

Jayde willed her personal ring open and drew the armor out into her hands.

Ranger leather, plated at the vitals, scaled along the forearms — the familiar weight of it settling onto her shoulders like a hand she’d known a lifetime. She seated the crossbow against her hip where the draw was clean, ran her thumb down the limb to check the prod for cold-cracks, found none. The bolt case rode at the small of her back. Ninety-one in the case, fletched and counted twice. The enhanced blade went to her left hip, the throwing knives — White’s, balanced for a heavier hand than hers but balanced all the same — to the cross-strap.

Eden geared beside her: boiled-leather cuirass, a short spear she could brace or throw, one knife. Lean kit for a lean woman. She moved through it without a wasted motion, and Jayde watched her as a younger soldier watches an old one, and thought, not for the first time, that competence aged better than almost anything.

By reflex her awareness reached inward, down toward the Crucible Core, looking for the warm coil of essence she’d carried her whole life on Doha —

— and found the door shut. Deliberately. By her own hand.

No cultivation. Not a flicker, not a thread, not the faintest pulse to read the air with. Anything she pushed out from her Core would be a signature, and a signature in this place was a dinner bell. So she pulled her hand back from the door and left it shut, and felt the nakedness of it: body, mind, two lifetimes of training, and nothing else. As it had been before any of it. As it had been at the very start.

Far off, thinned almost to nothing, two threads still answered when she touched them. One ran toward salt water and a wild domain, to Reiko at the far end of it. One ran toward the city, to Yinxin, who held the wyrmlings and would scream down the bond if Jayde ever truly went still. Both had drawn to wire across the seal. Both held. She left them where they were, alarms set, and did not pull on either.

Against her ribs, under the leather, a shed scale the length of her thumb sat faintly warm. Tianxin’s. She’d kept it out of the ring on purpose. It cost her nothing to carry, and a small warm thing against the body in a cold place was not nothing. The sealed card rode deeper in the pack, face down, unopened. Also not nothing. Also not yet.

[A forward operating base.] Kazren’s voice arrived in the soul-space, dry as old parchment, fitting itself to the data she was reading as if he’d been reading over her shoulder. [Military infrastructure. The builders were methodical. I approve.]

”You would,” Jayde murmured, and shouldered the rest of her kit.

***

The cycle came up dim.

That was the word for it down here — not dawn, nothing so generous. The dark simply thinned by degrees until a sourceless gray light lay over the basin, enough to see the shape of the world by, never enough to feel watched-over. Jayde stood at the lip of their hollow and let her eyes do what the headache had stopped them doing for two cycles: read the land.

It wasn’t wilderness. That was the first thing the light gave back to her. Wilderness was random — this was ruined order. The folds of ground ran too straight to be erosion alone. The pools sat in depressions that had once been something, drainage or foundation, the geometry still ghosting up through the rot. Somebody had shaped this basin once, as somebody shapes a fort, and then time and the corruption had gone to work on it for a very long while, and what was left was the bones of intent with the flesh of decay grown over.

They moved on the bearing, the compass riding flat in Jayde’s palm.

It read the air for her — passive, drinking in what was already there, the essence-signatures of anything that cultivated or burned or simply was corruption-dense enough to glow against the background. Five kilometers of early warning, near enough. The needle sat quiet. She’d learned its language in two cycles: a lazy drift meant ambient, the basin breathing; a twitch meant something with a signature was moving inside the warning ring. Quiet needle, quiet ground. She set the pace off it and off her own counted steps both, and trusted neither alone.

Federation pacing carried them. Slow, even, metronomic — the gait you used when the air was thin and the march was long, and panic was a luxury that killed you. And the air was thin. Not the altitude kind; the basin’s own. Something about the corruption ate at it, left it flat and stale in the lungs, so that a climb that should have cost nothing left them both breathing harder than the grade warranted. The fix was discipline. Rest before you needed it. Drink before you were dry. Let the body bank what it could while the legs still had it to give.

The pools they passed wide. Each one held a sheen on its surface that wasn’t oil and wasn’t algae, a slick, faintly iridescent film that crawled when the light hit it. Biological. The membrane filters in her ring could pull water clean from worse, but every minute spent filtering was a minute spent not moving, so she logged the sources, marked the cleaner one, and kept the column moving past the rest.

Along the base of a standing wall, where the old stone met the rot, something grew. Low cushions of it, blue-green, faintly luminous in the dim, feeding on the corruption that bled up out of the ground and turning poison into light. The basin made everything into something it had not been. Jayde gave it the same wide berth she’d give a downed power line. Pretty was not the same as safe. Down here they almost never were.

Eden walked the rear and worked her notch-stick as she went, the small dry sound of the blade taking a sliver from the wood marking each cycle off. Two notches now. A year of them to cut.

”If we lose track of time,” she said, not breaking stride, ”we lose the portal.”

She didn’t have to explain it. The seal held a year and not a day more, and a year was only a year if you’d counted it true. Lose the count and they’d either burn cycles they didn’t have or arrive at the wall before it thinned and put their hands on stone that killed them. The notch-stick was as much a weapon as the spear.

Under the soles of her boots, distant, Jayde felt it again — the slow, oversized pulse in the ground she’d felt the first cycle. A beat too deep and too patient to be anything she wanted a name for. Something far below the basin, breathing on a clock of its own. She did not turn toward it. She did not let the data dump volunteer what it knew. She filed it under the heading she’d opened on the first cycle and kept locked: do not investigate, and walked on, and let the pulse fall behind.

***

The smell came first.

Metallic. Wrong-sweet, like copper left too long in honey. It clung to the stone beneath Jayde’s boots, faintly luminescent, a pale amber trail no wider than her thumb, laid across the tunnel floor in a pattern too regular to be natural. The trail branched at the junction ahead, one line curving left toward deeper rock, the other continuing along the passage they’d been following since the dim-cycle began.

Jayde crouched and studied it without touching.

The headache had subsided overnight. Not gone, but manageable. Like the last pulse of a bruise. Isha’s data dump was still settling behind her eyes, fragments surfacing at odd intervals the way silt rises in stirred water. She couldn’t access it the way she’d access a file or a briefing. It arrived in pieces: a word, a diagram, a set of coordinates that locked into place only when her attention drifted close to the right question.

Pheromone substrate. Chemical navigation.

That one she hadn’t asked for. It had surfaced the moment the smell registered, the data responding to stimulus, cross-referencing what she was experiencing against what Isha had compressed into her.

”Trail?” Eden’s voice, low. The Doc was three paces back, notch-stick in one hand, the other resting on the hilt of the short blade Jayde had pulled from White’s weapons cache the night before.

”Pheromone.” Jayde didn’t look up. ”Chemical marker. They lay them for navigation. Column traffic, probably resource transport.” She tilted her head. The luminescence was faint enough that she’d have missed it in better light. Here, in the permanent twilight of the Mid Ring, it stood out like a vein of ore. ”This one’s fresh. Within the last few hours.”

Eden moved up beside her and crouched. Her eyes tracked the branching pattern, the regularity of the line, the way it hugged the left wall at the curve. ”Organized.”

”Extremely.”

The bioluminescence overhead had brightened a fraction since they’d broken camp, the ceiling’s glow shifting from deep slate to a faint, watery gray-green. Not sunlight. Not anything like sunlight. But it gave the tunnels enough ambient illumination to move by, and Jayde had already begun to think of its rhythms as dim-cycle and bright-cycle. Rough markers. Better than nothing.

Eden had carved the second notch into her stick at the transition. Day two.

***

They moved for most of the bright-cycle.

Jayde led, essence compass in her left hand, Vael’kir across her back, crossbow slung at her right hip. The compass needle drifted in a slow, steady sweep. Passive detection, reading ambient signatures without emitting anything. It had picked up the 43-minute patrol they’d identified on Day 1, now to the northeast and holding its interval. A second signature had appeared overnight: something heavier, slower, moving roughly parallel to their bearing about two klicks west. Not close enough to worry about. Close enough to track.

The data dump had given her coordinates. Fragmentary, stamped with notation systems she didn’t fully recognize, but the compass could translate bearing and distance from their drop point. Bearing 220, roughly three days at careful pace. A fortress. The data flagged it as structurally intact, defensible, and — the word that had surfaced unbidden in the small hours of the night — quiet.

Low ambient Charling activity. Established patrol routes that skirted the perimeter rather than penetrating it. Something about the fortress itself discouraged colony expansion into its footprint.

Interesting. Why?

The tactical voice filed it. The rest of her kept moving.

The tunnels here were broad, natural cavern systems widened by something that wasn’t natural. The walls bore tool-marks if you knew where to look, long parallel grooves scored into the stone at regular intervals. Not human tools. Not any tool Jayde recognized. The grooves were shallow, precise, and old. Whatever had carved them had done so systematically, widening the passages to accommodate traffic far larger than a person.

Eden noticed them too. She ran her fingers along a groove without breaking stride. ”Mandible marks?”

”That’s my read.”

”How old?”

Jayde checked a fragment of data that was still assembling itself. ”Old enough that the stone’s weathered smooth at the edges. This section’s been stable for a long time. Generations of them.”

They walked in silence for a while. The air tasted of mineral dust and something else, a faint, acrid undertone, like the residue of a chemical reaction. Corruption. Not strong. Background levels. Jayde’s compass registered it as a thin orange haze at the edge of its detection field, constant and directionless.

”Commander.”

Jayde stopped.

Eden had gone still beside her, hand raised in the old signal. Contact, quiet. Her eyes were fixed on a point forty meters ahead where the tunnel curved and the ceiling dropped.

Movement. Low to the ground. Rhythmic.

Jayde pressed her back against the wall and drew Eden in beside her. The tunnel widened slightly here, a natural alcove eroded into the left side, deep enough for two bodies if they didn’t breathe too hard. The bioluminescence above was dimmer in this stretch, the ceiling crusted with something dark that absorbed the glow.

They watched.

***

The column came around the curve in a line so precise it looked rehearsed.

Six of them. Each the size of a large hound, low to the ground and built wrong for it — wrong by every mammal instinct she had, right by some other logic entirely. No fur. No skin. Chitin plates in overlapping layers, pale amber in the dim light, flexing at the joints with mechanical smoothness. Six legs each, the front pair modified, flattened, broader, carrying chunks of dark stone clamped in mandibles that curved like shears. Segmented bodies, thorax and abdomen clearly differentiated, moving with the articulated efficiency of something that had been doing exactly this for longer than the Academy had existed.

They had no eyes.

That was the part the information hadn’t carried. Where a face should have looked back, there was only a cluster of recessed pits along the head-plate, pocked and dark, reading the world by whatever it was such things read — the trail’s scent, the warmth of bodies, the tremor of a foot on stone. No gaze to meet. No malice to flinch from. The column moved up its luminous road with the indifference of weather, and the indifference was worse than any hunger could have been.

Jayde’s hand found Eden’s wrist and squeezed once. Stay.

They clicked. A dry, ratcheting stridulation, leg-plate against leg-plate, passing down the line and back — not speech, not threat, just the sound such a thing made simply by being itself, as a clock keeps time. Several of them carried things: chunks of stone, a section of something that might once have been wrought, held against the underbody by forelegs that had been remade into pads. Carriers. Haulers. The column wasn’t hunting. It was commuting, freighting the basin’s bones back to wherever the basin’s bones were taken.

The lead worker — Sapper, the data supplied, the word arriving like a caption beneath an image — paused at the pheromone trail on the floor. Its head rotated. Not eyes. Recessed pits along the forward plate, clustered in tight formation, and Jayde watched them pulse once as the creature oriented on the chemical track. A leg tapped the stone, a vibration she felt through her boots more than heard.

The column adjusted. The lead Sapper turned left, following the branch that curved deeper, and the others followed in sequence. Each one stepped into the footprint of the one before it. Each one carried its load in the same mandible configuration. Each one moved at the same speed.

The clicking was constant. A dry, rapid percussion, chitin against stone, legs articulating, mandibles adjusting grip. Under it, a softer sound: a rasping, like a file drawn across bone. Stridulation. The lore fragment surfaced: leg-against-chitin communication. Secondary to pheromone. Maintains column cohesion.

Forty seconds. The column passed. The clicking faded around the curve and was gone.

Neither of them moved for a full minute.

Eden exhaled first. ”Joint articulation,” she said quietly. ”The leg segments. Five points of flex per limb. The chitin’s thinnest at the second and fourth joints — you could see the membrane between the plates when the lead one turned.”

”I saw.”

”Sensory pits. Not eyes. They don’t have optical structures. Vibration and heat, if the anatomy tracks with anything I know. Chemical too, obviously.” Eden’s voice was level. The clinical register of a woman cataloguing a specimen. ”The mandibles could shear through leather. Probably through light formation armor. But the body chitin’s not heavy. A solid strike to the thorax-abdomen junction would crack it.”

Jayde let the assessment settle alongside her own. Eden saw anatomy. Weak points. Kill mechanics. That was the doctor’s eye — where does this thing break?

Jayde had been watching something else.

”Six in the column. Standard spacing — half a body-length. They follow the pheromone trail with zero deviation. No scouts ahead, no rear guard. The load-bearing pattern’s uniform. This isn’t a patrol. It’s a supply line.” She paused. Played back the image. ”The stone they were carrying. Dark. Dense. Heavier than the tunnel rock. They’re transporting materials from somewhere deeper to somewhere shallower.”

”Building.”

”Or maintaining.”

The pheromone trail still glowed faintly on the stone. Jayde studied it. ”Forty-three-minute patrol interval to the northeast — that’s the military traffic. This is logistics. Different pheromone signature, different caste, different purpose.” She looked at Eden. ”They’re not just defending territory. They’re running infrastructure.”

Eden met her gaze. Her eyes held the same thing Jayde felt: the cold, professional recognition that they were inside something far more organized than a beast-trial.

[Logistics implies hierarchy,] Kazren said. [Hierarchy implies command. Somewhere in this system, something is making decisions. Do not assume it is mindless simply because it is not human.]

”We need weapons,” Eden said.

”Yes.”

***

The spear took an hour.

Jayde pulled cord from the ring supplies. Good cord, braided, the kind White would’ve packed for a dozen purposes. Eden selected a shaft from the bundle of poles Isha had stored, light, straight, originally meant for a portable shelter frame. Strong enough.

The stone was the problem. The tunnel floor offered loose fragments, but nothing with the right grain for an edge. Jayde tested three before Eden found one embedded in the wall: a wedge of dark, fine-grained stone with a natural fracture plane. It came free with careful levering, and Jayde worked it against a flat surface, grinding the edge with the patience of someone who’d done this in another life on a Federation survival course and in this life on a mountainside with Kazren’s voice in her ear telling her she was wasting time.

She shaped the point. Lashed it to the shaft with cord and a binding technique that the Federation had taught her hands, and Doha had never needed to.

Eden tested the weight. Adjusted her grip. Thrust twice — short, controlled, targeting the imaginary second joint of an imaginary Sapper leg.

”Functional,” Eden said.

”Crude.”

”Functional and crude aren’t mutually exclusive, Commander.”

Jayde’s mouth twitched. She sat back against the wall and pulled the crossbow from her hip. Ran her thumb along the stock. The weapon was good. Well-made, properly maintained, one of Isha’s thoughtful inclusions in her personal ring.

Jayde brought the bolt case into her lap and counted them again. Ninety-one. Same as the cycle before, same as it would be tomorrow unless the count went the wrong way, and the wrong way was the only direction the count could go. There was no fletcher in the Harrowing. No quartermaster, no resupply, no merit-bracelet to spend on a fresh quiver at some safe hall she’d never been given the grace to land in. Ninety-one was the whole war, and every bolt she loosed was a bolt that did not come back.

”Ninety-one shots.” She set them back in the case one at a time, the small click of nock against wood marking each. ”Every bolt that misses is one we don’t get back.”

”So we don’t miss.” Eden said it flatly, a rule she’d lived by most of a lifetime.

”So we don’t loose at all unless it’s worth a bolt.” Jayde closed the case. The crossbow was a precision tool — saved for the shot nothing else could make, the throat of a thing too fast to let close, the kill that had to be clean and silent and now. Everything below that line, the basin would have to provide. Stone worked to a point and lashed to a haft. Deadfalls along the trails the workers walked. A tripline and a weighted log where the ground funneled. The crossbow was the scalpel. The basin was the rest of the kit, if she was patient enough to make it so. They had a year to be patient.

In a year-long sealed environment against a colony of insects that numbered in the millions.

”We conserve,” Jayde said. ”Every bolt is a confirmed kill, or it doesn’t leave the rail. No speculative shots. No suppression fire.”

”That’s a Federation principle.”

”That’s a math principle. Ninety-one bolts. Three hundred and sixty-five days.” She balanced the crossbow across her knees. ”We need to manufacture. The fortress ruins, if the infrastructure’s intact, there’ll be metal. Forging stock, structural elements. Something I can work into bolt shafts and points.”

”Without a forge?”

”I’ve got a blade, cord, a flat stone, and two lifetimes of knowing how things come apart. We’ll manage.” Jayde secured the crossbow and stood. ”The data says the fortress perimeter has low Charling traffic. Something about the site itself, the construction, the materials, maybe residual formations, discourages colony expansion. If that holds, we’ve got a defensible base with a resource supply.”

Eden slid the spear into a makeshift carry across her back — cord loops, quick-release, another Federation field trick that neither of them commented on. ”And if the data’s wrong?”

”Then we find out from a distance and adjust.” Jayde checked the compass. The heavy signature to the west had shifted south. The 43-minute patrol was cycling northeast on schedule. Clear corridor bearing 220 for the next window. ”We move.”

***

They traveled the rest of the bright-cycle in careful increments.

The technique refined itself as they went. Pheromone trails were the key. The chemical markers the Charlings laid for their own navigation were, for anyone patient enough to read them, a map of where the colony moved and where it didn’t. Fresh trails glowed faintly. Old trails had dulled to a residue Jayde could detect by scent alone if the air was still. Intersections where multiple trails converged meant high traffic: junctions, transfer points, column routes. Passages where the stone was clean meant the colony had no business there.

They stayed on clean stone.

Eden adapted fast. Within hours, the Doc was reading trail freshness by color alone — bright amber for recent, dull ochre for old, dark brown for abandoned. She marked their route on a strip of cloth pulled from the ring, knotting distances by pace-count. Redundancy. If they had to backtrack, they’d have their own map.

Jayde’s data continued to surface in fragments. A notation about tunnel acoustics, that sound carried farther in the wider passages, which meant the clicking of a Charling column could reach them long before the column itself. A diagram of caste hierarchy that she couldn’t fully parse yet, but which suggested the Sappers they’d observed were the lowest tier of a complex logistics chain. A reference to something called the deep pulse — a low-frequency vibration emanating from far below, tied to the brood-cycle rhythm.

The ground-pulse. The one she’d felt on Day 1. Slow, enormous, regular as a heartbeat.

She didn’t pursue that thread. Not yet.

Near the end of the bright-cycle, they found a chamber off the main passage. Small, dry, defensible, with a single entrance and walls clear of pheromone residue. Jayde checked the compass. Nothing within detection range. The 43-minute patrol had shifted its pattern slightly, wider arc, same interval — but was still well northeast.

They made camp. No fire. Cold rations from the ring. Water from the sealed containers Isha had packed.

Eden sat with her back to the wall, the spear across her knees, and ate in silence. Jayde ate standing, compass in one hand, watching the entrance.

The bioluminescence overhead had begun to dim. The ceiling’s glow fading from gray-green to deep slate, the edges of the chamber dissolving into shadow. Dim-cycle coming.

”Commander.”

”Mm.”

”The pheromone trails.” Eden set down her ration. ”The pattern isn’t random. It’s not even just efficient. It’s architectural. Column routes, branch points, transfer nodes — that’s not swarm behavior. That’s civil engineering.”

Jayde turned the thought over. Matched it against the fragments still settling behind her eyes. ”The data calls them an ecosystem. Not a species. An ecosystem operating as a single organism.”

”An ecosystem doesn’t build supply lines.”

”This one does.”

Silence. The clicking had returned — distant, faint, somewhere in the passages beyond their chamber. A patrol cycling through. Not close. Not far enough to ignore.

”The fortress builders knew,” Jayde said. ”Whatever’s in that data about the fortress site — whoever constructed it understood this. The colony’s behavior, the traffic patterns, the pheromone architecture. They built in a location the colony avoids for a reason. Not by accident.”

Eden looked at her. The dim light caught the angles of her face, the sharpness that belonged to a woman who’d survived on intelligence and stubbornness since long before this life. ”You think they studied them.”

”I think someone mapped this ecosystem from the inside and built defenses based on what they learned. And I think whatever they knew has been sitting in these ruins for longer than the Academy’s existed.”

”Then we’d better get there.”

Jayde clipped the compass to her belt and drew a bolt from the quiver. Held it up to the dying light. Steel shaft, broadhead point, fletched with treated vanes that wouldn’t degrade in this atmosphere. Good engineering. One of ninety-one.

She slid it back. Pulled Vael’kir from her back instead, checked the edge, and settled the blade across her thighs.

”First dim-cycle watch is mine,” Jayde said. ”Four hours. Then you.”

Eden was already lying down, the spear within arm’s reach.

The clicking faded. Returned. Faded.

Jayde sat in the dark, Vael’kir warm against her palms, and listened to the colony breathe.
