Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 6: Chapter 1: The Kindling

Location: Temple of First Flames, Sacred Mountain of Pyrros

Time: Early morning, Harvest Season, Year 2847 of the Lower Realm

The Temple of First Flames crouched against the amber sky like a sleeping dragon, its obsidian walls drinking the dawn light. Jade pressed her small face to the carriage window, breath fogging the glass as volcanic spires pierced the horizon. So big. The temple’s black stone pulsed with veins of ember-crystal, glowing like angry wounds against the mountain’s flank.

”Stop fidgeting.” Za’thul’s voice cut sharp through the carriage’s leather-scented air. ”Today determines everything.”

Everything. The word hung heavy, thick as the incense smoke already curling from distant braziers. Jade’s fingers found the amber pendant at her throat—Mama’s gift, warm against her skin. (Like my eyes, Mama had whispered, dragon blood runs true.) The pendant’s surface caught fire-light from the crystal veins outside, fracturing warmth across her palm.

”She’s nervous,” Shyenho murmured, silk robes rustling as she reached for their daughter. Herbs clung to her sleeves—lavender and ember-root, the scents of an enchanter’s workshop. ”Aren’t you, little flame?”

Little flame. The pet name sparked something fierce in Jade’s chest. Today she’d prove it true. Today, the Emberstone would sing her strength to all the realms, and Papa would smile like he did when the forge burned brightest. (Proud. Make him proud.)

The carriage wheels crunched over volcanic gravel, each stone worn smooth by countless pilgrims. Through the window, other families streamed toward the temple—crimson banners snapping in mountain wind, guards in polished armor, children in ceremonial white clutching their parents’ hands. The Apexblight families rode in floating platforms, their Overlord-class magic lifting them above the common roads. (Someday. Maybe today.)

”Remember,” Za’thul said, amber eyes catching hers in the reflection, ”you carry our bloodline. Freehold fire burns in your veins—and dragon’s blood besides.” His scarred hand gestured toward the temple. ”Every clan worth naming watches today. Korvanis himself will read your essence.”

High Mage Korvanis. Jade had heard stories—how he’d lived three centuries, how his magic could crack mountains, how children sometimes fainted just meeting his gaze. Her stomach fluttered like trapped flame-moths. (Brave. Be brave.)

The Temple of First Flames loomed closer, its entrance carved with writhing dragons whose crystal eyes blazed with inner fire. Eternal braziers flanked the massive doors, their flames dancing colors that had no names—essence-fire that never died, never dimmed. The air itself tasted of power and ancient stone, sulfur and sanctity mingling on her tongue.

”Blessed flames,” someone whispered as their carriage joined the queue. ”Look at that gathering.”

Jade craned her neck, peering past silk curtains. The temple’s forecourt swarmed with nobility—easily three hundred families, maybe more. Blazecrowned banners flew beside Inferno-tempered crests, political rivals maintaining careful distances. She spotted the Ironhold clan’s hammer-and-anvil, the Nightwind family’s storm-crow, the Emberpeak sigil with its crown of flames.

(So many. All watching. All judging.)

”Political necessity,” Za’thul muttered, but his knuckles whitened where they gripped his ceremonial sword. ”Half these kriffing parasites wouldn’t cross the street for us normally.”

”Language,” Shyenho chided, though her own hands trembled where they smoothed Jade’s white ceremonial robes. The fabric felt gossamer-thin, embroidered with silver thread that caught every flicker of light. (Special. Today’s special.)

Their carriage lurched to a stop. Outside, a temple attendant in ember-colored robes approached, bowing low. ”Lord Za’thul Freehold, Lady Shyenho Stargaze,” he intoned, voice formal as carved stone. ”High Mage Korvanis requests your presence. The Kindling begins within the hour.”

Within the hour. Jade’s heart hammered against her ribs like a caged flame-bird. Za’thul stepped out first, his crimson clan robes billowing in the mountain wind. Fire-essence stitched the edges—real magic, not mere decoration—and the fabric seemed to drink the temple’s ember-light. Shyenho followed, graceful as flowing water, her dual Wood/Fire nature making the air shimmer faintly around her.

Then Jade’s turn. Her legs felt shaky as she climbed down, white robes catching in the breeze. The volcanic stone beneath her feet radiated warmth, heated by the temple’s eternal fires. (Warm. Like Papa’s forge.)

”Lady Jade Freehold,” the attendant announced, and heads turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through wheat—”So young,” ”Beautiful child,” ”Dragon blood shows,” ”Freehold’s heir at last.”

Dragon blood shows. Jade touched her amber eyes self-consciously. Mama said they marked her as special, that a few bloodlines carried such ancient power. (Special. Powerful. Prove it.)

The temple’s interior stole her breath. Obsidian walls soared toward vaulted darkness, carved with scenes of the Eight Essences—Inferno and Torrent, Growth and Decay, Light and Shadow, Metal and Wind. Stained glass windows caught the eternal flames, scattering rainbow fire across stone that had witnessed ten thousand Kindlings.

Tiered benches curved around the central altar in a vast horseshoe, families arranged by rank and power. The Eternalpyre section sat empty—no such bloodlines remained in the Lower Realm—but Apexblight families commanded the front rows, their children glittering with protective enchantments. Za’thul guided them to the Inferno-tempered section, third tier from the altar.

(Not the front. But not the back.)

”Acceptable positioning,” Za’thul murmured, settling beside other clan leaders. ”Korvanis honors the old protocols.”

The altar dominated everything—a massive obsidian bowl filled with flame that had burned since the temple’s founding. Above it, suspended by chains of living crystal, hung the Emberstone. The artifact pulsed with inner light, its faceted surface refracting the eternal fire into dancing sparks. (Beautiful. Terrifying.)

”That’s it,” Shyenho whispered, following Jade’s gaze. ”The stone that will read your essence, little flame. Are you ready?”

Ready? Jade’s mouth felt dry as ash-wind. Around them, other families whispered speculation—whose child might surprise, who was destined for greatness, which bloodlines carried hidden power. The political undercurrents ran thick as honey, alliances and rivalries crackling in the incense-heavy air.

”The Ironhold girl looks promising,” someone muttered behind them. ”Strong magical resonance already.”

”Nightwind’s boy has been training since birth,” another voice added. ”Private tutors, essence-infused diet, meditation from age three.”

Training. Jade hadn’t trained—Papa said natural talent mattered more than preparation, that forcing a child’s essence caused more harm than good. But listening to the whispers, doubt crept cold fingers around her heart. (What if I’m not enough? What if—)

”Silence,” Za’thul’s voice cut through her spiraling thoughts. ”Trust your blood.”

A gong rang, deep and resonant, vibrating through stone and bone. The great doors swung shut with finality, sealing three hundred families inside with destiny and ancient magic. Flame-light danced across expectant faces as footsteps echoed from the altar.

High Mage Korvanis emerged from the shadows like judgment incarnate. Jade’s breath caught—he was tall, easily seven feet, draped in robes that shifted between crimson and gold with each step. Silver hair fell past his shoulders, and his eyes... his eyes burned molten amber, older than mountains, heavy with power that made the air itself bow.

”Children of the Lower Realm,” his voice rolled through the temple like distant thunder. ”Today we witness the Kindling—the sacred moment when young souls touch the eternal flame and discover their destiny.”

Destiny. The word tasted of copper and promise.

Korvanis raised his arms, and essence-fire danced between his fingers—not mere flame, but concentrated power that made reality shimmer. ”Five summers these children have walked among us, their cores dormant, their potential unknown. Today, the Emberstone will sing their truth.”

The crystal above the altar pulsed brighter, resonating with the High Mage’s power. Jade felt it tugging at something deep inside her chest, where Papa said her Crucible Core waited to awaken. (Soon. Soon I’ll know.)

”We call them forward in order of bloodline,” Korvanis intoned, consulting a scroll that glowed with runes. ”Let the Kindling begin.”

The first child approached—a boy from House Ironhold, his ceremonial robes pristine white. Jade watched him climb the altar steps, small hands trembling as he reached for the Emberstone. The crystal flared, bathing him in golden light, and gasps echoed through the temple.

”Flamewrought Tier,” Korvanis announced, voice carrying clearly. ”Inferno Essence, moderate resonance. The boy shows promise.”

Applause rippled through the Bronze section as a Life Disk materialized—silver metal inscribed with flame motifs, settling around the child’s neck with the weight of destiny. He’d achieved respectable rank, enough for a good life, marriage prospects, and clan standing.

(Flamewrought. That’s... decent. But not great.)

More children followed. A Nightwind girl achieved Inferno-tempered, her Shadow Essence making the Emberstone pulse with dark fire. An Emberpeak boy manifested Torrent at Sparkforged level—disappointing for his family’s fire heritage, but water was still power.

”Next,” Korvanis called, ”Jade of House Freehold.”

Now. Time crystallized like frozen flame. Jade’s legs moved without conscious thought, carrying her down the stone steps toward destiny. Every eye in the temple followed her progress—three hundred families watching, judging, calculating political implications.

The altar steps felt steeper than mountains. Each footfall echoed like heartbeats in the vast space, and the eternal flame grew larger, hotter, filling her vision with dancing light. The Emberstone hung just above her head now, its crystal facets reflecting her face in amber fragments.

(Beautiful. Powerful. Dragon blood.)

”Place your hands upon the stone, child,” Korvanis instructed, his ancient eyes studying her with interest. ”Let your essence speak.”

Jade reached up, white sleeves falling back to reveal thin arms. The Emberstone felt warm—no, alive—beneath her palms, pulsing with rhythms deeper than heartbeat. Power flowed through the crystal, seeking something inside her, probing for the spark that should ignite into magical flame.

Come on. She pressed harder against the stone, willing her dragon blood to sing, her Freehold fire to blaze. Show them. Show them all.

The Emberstone... flickered.

Not the brilliant flare of awakening essence. Not the golden radiance of discovered power. Just a weak flicker, like a candle guttering in the wind, before fading to dull crystal.

Silence.

The kind of silence that swallows sound and hope alike. Jade kept her hands pressed to the stone, waiting for the delayed reaction, the surge of power that would vindicate bloodline and expectation. (Any moment. Any—)

”Curious,” Korvanis murmured, leaning closer. His amber eyes narrowed, and he gestured with one hand. The Emberstone pulsed with fresh power, probing deeper, seeking any trace of magical resonance.

Nothing.

The High Mage’s expression shifted from curiosity to confusion to something approaching horror. In three centuries of Kindlings, through bloodlines rising and falling, through wars and peace and the slow turn of ages, he had never seen this. Never witnessed a complete absence where power should reside.

”Test again,” Za’thul’s voice cracked like a whip from the audience. ”There must be—the readings can fail, the stone can—”

”The Emberstone does not fail,” Korvanis said quietly, but his words carried to every corner of the temple. He raised his hand again, channeling more power, making the crystal blaze with light that illuminated every shadow.

Still nothing. Jade felt the magic washing over her, through her, around her—but never touching whatever should spark within. Where her Crucible Core should burn with awakening flame, she found only... emptiness.

No. The thought tasted of ash and broken dreams. No, this isn’t right. Dragon blood. Freehold fire. I’m supposed to be—

”Voidforge,” Korvanis whispered, the word falling like a tombstone in the silence. ”The child is Voidforge.”

The temple erupted. Gasps, shouts, the scrape of benches as families leaned forward to witness history. In ten thousand years of recorded Kindlings, no human had ever manifested as completely magicless. The Lower Realm’s archives held no precedent, no guidance, no hope.

Voidforge. The word echoed in Jade’s skull like a death knell. Around her, faces twisted with shock, disgust, morbid fascination. Political calculations shifted in real-time as alliances crumbled and opportunities died.

”Impossible,” someone breathed. ”She’s human—how can a human be Voidforge?”

”Dragon blood,” another voice whispered. ”Look at those eyes—the bloodline shows, but no power flows.”

”Cursed,” a third voice hissed. ”Abomination.”

Abomination. The word hit like a physical blow. Jade swayed on the altar steps, small hands still pressed to the unresponsive crystal. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. She was meant for greatness, for power, for Papa’s proud smile and Mama’s tears of joy.

Instead...

She turned toward her parents, seeking comfort, explanation, some sign that this nightmare would end. Za’thul sat frozen in his bench, amber eyes wide with horror that mirrored her own. Political calculations flickered across his face—alliances shattered, enemies empowered, clan status crashing into ruin.

But Shyenho... Shyenho’s face had gone pale as winter frost, her hands pressed to her mouth. In her enchanter’s eyes, Jade saw something worse than disappointment, worse than political catastrophe.

She saw fear.

Mama? The question died unspoken as understanding dawned cold and cruel. Her mother—beautiful, powerful, dragon-blooded Shyenho—was looking at her own daughter like she was a stranger. Like she was something wrong.

”The Kindling is complete,” Korvanis announced, his voice carefully neutral. No Life Disk materialized—what disk could bind one who touched no essence? ”The child...” he paused, ancient wisdom struggling with unprecedented reality, ”...the child is acknowledged.”

Acknowledged. Not blessed. Not welcomed into magical society. Simply... acknowledged to exist.

Jade stumbled down the altar steps, white robes suddenly feeling like burial shrouds. The temple that had seemed so magnificent now pressed close and suffocating, three hundred pairs of eyes tracking her shameful retreat. Whispers followed like carrion birds—”Voidforge,” ”Impossible,” ”What does this mean?”

She found her parents, but they felt like strangers now. Za’thul’s face had hardened into the mask he wore for clan business, all warmth extinguished. Shyenho wouldn’t meet her eyes, silk robes trembling as if her daughter’s presence caused physical pain.

”We leave,” Za’thul said quietly. ”Now.”

The journey home passed in crushing silence. Jade pressed her face to the carriage window again, but the temple’s ember-light seemed dimmer now, its majesty tarnished by failure. Other families’ carriages gave them wide berth on the road—already the news would be spreading, carried by messenger-birds and essence-enhanced communication.

The Freehold heir is Voidforge. The dragon blood failed. The clan falls.

Home felt different when they arrived—smaller, shabbier, marked by shame. Servants whispered in corridors, and Jade caught fragments of hurried conversations—”What happens now?” ”Will the Lord divorce her?” ”How can we serve a Voidforge house?”

That night, Jade lay in her bed listening to her parents argue through thin walls. Voices rose and fell like storm winds, accusations and denials and desperate plans crashing against impossible reality.

”—not my daughter—”

”—must be explanation—”

”—changeling, substituted in the cradle—”

”—divorce, remarry, try again—”

Changeling. The word cut deepest of all. Her own mother, the woman who’d called her ”little flame” and sang lullabies about dragon fire, now believed her to be some imposter, some creature wearing her daughter’s face.

Jade pulled her pillow over her head, but couldn’t muffle the sound of her family tearing apart. Outside her window, ember-light from distant forges painted her walls in shifting patterns—mockery of the power she’d never possess, the heritage she’d somehow lost.

Voidforge. The designation felt like a brand burned into her soul. Tomorrow would bring consequences—political, social, personal. Tomorrow her life would change in ways her five-year-old mind couldn’t comprehend.

But tonight, in the darkness of her childhood bedroom, Jade of House Freehold wept for dreams that had never stood a chance of coming true.

The ember-light flickered and died.
