Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 4: Chapter 0.4: The Core

Location: Planet Crypso 3Q3U, Xi Corporation Secret Base

Time: Night (local time)

Crypso 3Q3U was a bastard child of Mars and hell, a planet so brutal it could crush hope as easily as bone. Jayde crouched behind a rust-red outcropping, her GESS armor snarling against the planet’s tripled gravity—a weight that would splinter an unaugmented human’s skeleton like dry kindling. For her, it was a dull ache, a relentless press on every muscle, each step a calculated rebellion against the planet’s pull. (Sixty years of this shit, and gravity still wants to kill me.)

The air reeked of sour ash, carried by winds that howled like the ghosts of forgotten wars. Sulfur stung her nostrils, mixing with the metallic tang of her recycled breathing apparatus. Her suit’s environmental systems hummed against her ribs, working overtime to filter the toxic atmosphere that would sear unprotected lungs in minutes.

The Xi Corporation base sprawled before her like a black wound gashed into the desert’s red flesh. Its angular silhouette bristled with turrets, their mechanical whirs slicing through the night—a steady rhythm of death, each weapon tracking arcs that painted overlapping kill zones across the approach routes. A faint shimmer of energy shields domed the structures like a predator’s eye, the field generators humming with enough power to vaporize a shuttle.

Impregnable. Unapproachable. Yet here they were, a hundred meters from the perimeter, undetected.

That was the first thing that felt wrong.

(Eight thermal signatures, all masked. Perimeter sensors are down. Defense grid cycling. Too easy. Sixty years of ops, and nothing’s ever this easy.)

”Phase one complete,” Kira’s voice crackled through the comm, sharp as a blade. ”Perimeter sensors neutralized. Ten-minute window before the system cycles.”

Jayde’s HUD flickered with tactical overlays—approach vectors, defensive positions, extraction routes marked in blue phosphorescence against her retina. ”Copy. Teams, sound off.”

”Team One, Raven and Torch, positioned at power junction delta-seven,” came Marcus Vega’s gravelly whisper. Twenty-year veteran, demolitions specialist, steady as bedrock. She could hear the faint hiss of his plasma cutter in the background.

”Team Two, Viper and Echo, data core approach vector secured,” reported Elena Vasquez, their tech specialist. Former corporate hacker turned rebel, fingers faster than thought, paranoid as a conspiracy theorist. (Good. Paranoid keeps you breathing.)

”Ghost and Phantom, overwatch established,” murmured twin snipers Kai and Jun Nakamura. Brothers who’d never missed a shot, never left a partner behind. Their rifles would be tracking threats she couldn’t even see.

”Wraith and Shadow, ready for breach,” acknowledged Sarah Chen, infiltration expert. Could slip through a laser grid blindfolded, pick any lock Xi Corp manufactured. Her partner, David Kim was silent as death itself, probably already inside the outer wall.

Jayde’s hand signals were crisp, cutting through the dark like surgical strikes. Eight figures in black armor flowed across the rocky terrain, shadows honed by decades of war. No wasted motion. No hesitation. Sixty years of combat made you very good at not dying—and even better at dealing death.

Lawrence slid beside her, his rifle tracking threats that hadn’t yet materialized. ”Security’s lighter than it should be,” he murmured through their private channel, his voice warm but edged with the same suspicion gnawing at her gut.

(Always thinking, always analyzing. That’s why we’re still alive.)

”I noticed.” Jayde’s eyes swept the base, searching for the trap her instincts screamed was there. Guard rotations are too predictable. Patrol patterns with gaps wide enough to drive a transport through. ”Stay sharp. Something’s not adding up.”

Her tactical analysis kicked in automatically. (Base this size should have forty-plus security personnel. Seeing maybe twelve heat signatures. Either they’re running a skeleton crew, or...)

The ”or” was what worried her.

They reached the outer wall—a seamless slab of durasteel rising thirty meters, cold and unyielding as Xi Corp itself. The metal radiated chill even through her gloves, sucking heat from her fingertips like a vampiric embrace. Kira was already at work, her silver cybernetic eyes glinting as she placed the breaching charge, fingers dancing across the device’s interface with practiced precision.

Kira Thorne. Former Xi Corp engineer until they killed her research team for asking inconvenient questions about civilian casualties. Now she turned their own technology against them, her augmented brain processing quantum equations faster than their supercomputers. The device hummed, its frequency-tuned field softening the wall’s molecular structure at a harmonic level that would leave no trace.

No explosion. No alarms. Just a quiet wound to slip through.

”Thirty seconds,” Kira whispered, her voice carrying the faint electronic distortion of her vocal implants.

Jayde counted in her head, every sound amplified by combat stims flooding her system. The distant wail of Crypso’s sandstorms. The turrets’ mechanical grind, servos whining as they tracked phantom targets. Her own heartbeat, steady as a war drum, biorhythm locked in the combat trance that had kept her alive through a thousand battlefields.

(Breathe. Center. Trust the team. Trust the plan. Don’t trust anything else.)

The charge finished with a soft sigh, and Kira’s plasma torch carved an entrance, the superheated beam slicing through reinforced metal like a surgeon’s scalpel through flesh. The cut edges glowed cherry-red, then cooled to black as the night air kissed them.

They filed in, weapons raised, into the base’s outer corridor. The interior was sterile, lit by blue emergency lights that cast the world in frost. Smooth metal walls, unbroken except for access panels, gleamed coldly under the harsh illumination. The grated floor rang faintly under their boots despite their stealth, each footfall echoing like whispered promises of violence.

(Corporate architecture. All function, no soul. Like the bastards who built it.)

”Team One, secure the power distribution center,” Jayde ordered, her voice carrying across the comm with quiet authority. ”Team Two, data cores. Priority is the surveillance network—I want those servers fried and the data stripped. We’re ghosts—in and out, no trace.”

”Copy, Commander,” came the chorus of acknowledgments.

”ROE is weapons free on armed hostilities, but remember—we’re here to liberate, not massacre. Unarmed personnel get stunned and zip-tied unless they pose an active threat. Questions?”

Silence. They knew the drill.

The teams split, vanishing down branching corridors like smoke dispersing in the wind. Jayde watched their blue dots scatter across her HUD’s tactical display, each team member a lifeline in the electronic web that connected them. Marcus and Vega disappeared toward the power grid. Elena and her partner melted into the shadows leading to the data cores. The Nakamura twins took overwatch positions with sight lines covering the main approaches.

Jayde and Lawrence moved alone toward the central hub, where the main computer core pulsed with the heartbeat of Xi Corp’s operations. Where the antimatter bomb in her backpack would burn this place to radioactive ash.

The corridors were empty. That was the second thing that felt wrong.

(Base personnel should be rotating shifts. Maintenance crews. Security patrols. Kitchen staff heading back from late chow. Something. Anything. This feels like a morgue.)

”Where the hell is everyone?” Lawrence asked, his voice low, echoing her unease. His rifle swept corners with mechanical precision, finger resting on the trigger guard—ready but not reckless.

”Skeleton crew, maybe. Or bunked in residential.” But her gut churned, that sixth sense forged in decades of bloodshed, screaming trap in neon letters across her consciousness. ”Something’s off. Pattern recognition says we should’ve hit at least three roving patrols by now.”

”Could be luck,” Lawrence said, a grin audible in his tone despite the tension. ”We’ve had shit luck for years. Maybe the universe owes us one.”

”Maybe.” She didn’t believe it. Luck was a lie sold to civilians and recruits. Only preparation, paranoia, and superior firepower kept you alive in this business.

(Lawrence, always the optimist. Sixty years together, and he still thinks the universe might cut us a break. That’s why I need him—keeps me from drowning in my own cynicism.)

They rounded a corner and nearly collided with a guard. Unaugmented, soft, a corporate rent-a-cop chasing hazard pay on this nowhere rock. His eyes widened behind his helmet visor, hand fumbling for his sidearm with all the speed of molasses in winter.

Jayde’s plasma blade was faster, the energy field crackling to life as it sliced through the air. The superheated edge caught him across the throat, cauterizing as it killed—no blood, no mess, just the smell of burned meat and ozone. She caught him as he crumpled, lowering his body silently to the grated floor.

(Poor bastard. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong paycheck. Should’ve stayed home.)

”One down,” she murmured into the comm, already scanning for threats. ”Hostiles are likely aware of our presence now. Accelerate timeline.”

”Team One, three hostiles neutralized at power junction,” Marcus reported, his voice steady as granite. ”No alarms triggered. Grid compromised—they’re running on backup power in sixty seconds.”

”Team Two, data core access confirmed,” Elena’s voice carried a note of excitement. ”Holy shit, Commander—they’ve got petabytes of surveillance data here. Kill-switch protocols, behavioral analysis, and even genetic mapping. Extracting everything now.”

Too smooth. Too perfect. Every nerve in Jayde’s body screamed to abort, to pull her people out before the jaws of whatever trap they’d walked into snapped shut. But the mission was too critical. The stakes too high.

(Think of Eden’s children, laughing under silver-blue skies. Think of the thousands of GESS still chained by kill-chips, living on borrowed time until Xi Corp decides they’re obsolete. This base falls tonight, or they all die slowly tomorrow.)

She thought of the intelligence reports, the surveillance footage they’d intercepted showing GESS families torn apart when the kill-switches activated. Children dying in their parents’ arms because some corporate algorithm flagged them as ”economically inefficient.” The rage burned cold in her chest, professional and pure.

This base had to fall. No matter the cost.

They reached the central hub’s entrance—a massive circular door, heavy as a bank vault and twice as secure. Biometric scanners flanked the portal, their red lights sweeping in mechanical arcs. Kira’s access codes, sourced from shadows Jayde didn’t question, hissed the locks open with a pneumatic sigh that sounded like a dying breath.

(How many died to get us these codes? How many more will die if we fail?)

The chamber beyond stole her breath and replaced it with ice water.

A cathedral of technology stretched before them, its dome soaring a hundred meters high, the ceiling lost in shadow and the faint glow of ventilation systems. The walls were a mosaic of screens—hundreds, thousands—each flickering with maps, data streams, surveillance feeds that painted the galaxy in real-time information.

But the feeds... they stopped her cold, froze her blood in her veins like liquid nitrogen.

GESS people, living their lives. A woman cooking in a cramped kitchen, unaware that her every movement was being recorded and analyzed. A man toiling in a factory, sweat beading on his brow as corporate algorithms measured his productivity. A couple watching a holoscreen in their small apartment, hands entwined, sharing a moment of intimacy that wasn’t theirs anymore. Children in a corporate training facility, faces bright with innocence, playing games while Xi Corp studied their neural patterns.

Real-time footage, streamed from their own eyes. From the kill-chips, they thought were just identification tags.

(Fucking hell. They’re not just monitoring. They’re living in their heads.)

”Holy fuck,” Lawrence breathed, his usual warmth fracturing under the weight of revelation. ”They’re watching everything. Every moment. Every breath.”

Jayde moved forward like a woman in a nightmare, drawn by a horror so profound it had its own gravitational pull. The chamber’s heart was a raised platform overlooking a transparent floor, where the quantum core pulsed blue-white like the captured soul of a dying star. But the screens held her captive—an elderly GESS alone in a dark room, tapping his fingers against his knee in a rhythm that would be catalogued and analyzed. A soldier on patrol, his loyalty metrics displayed in real-time. A scientist in a lab, her breakthrough moments tagged for corporate appropriation. A mother cradling her child, both of them branded with designation numbers that reduced their humanity to data points.

All tagged. All watched. Every second of their existence monitored, recorded, filed away in digital vaults.

(How long? How many years have they been doing this? Sixty? Since the beginning?)

”They’re not just kill-switches,” Jayde said, her voice hollow, like a cry echoing in a dead temple. ”The chips have cameras. Audio pickups. Neural taps. They’re watching through their eyes. Hearing through their ears. They know everything.”

Lawrence stood beside her, his face pale in the screens’ ghoulish glow. ”Thousands of them. A panopticon they don’t even know exists.” His usual easy confidence was gone, replaced by something raw and vulnerable. ”Jesus Christ, Jayde. The violation... It’s worse than slavery. It’s the annihilation of privacy itself.”

The violation clawed at her, worse than slavery, worse than death. This was the murder of the self—every private moment stolen, every thought potentially monitored, every whispered secret catalogued in some corporate database. Her stomach churned, bile rising like a tide of revulsion.

(My dreams. My memories of another life. Did they see those, too? Have they been watching me dream of magic and dragons while I thought I was free?)

”Fuck these bastards,” Lawrence said, rage burning through his usual warmth like a plasma torch through ice. ”Let’s end this. Free them all.”

Jayde met his eyes, and for a moment, he was her brother again—the one who’d fought beside her through a hundred wars, who’d held her hand when the nightmares came, who’d been her anchor in the storm of corporate conditioning. The doubt gnawing at her eased, just a fraction.

(Sixty years. Sixty years of watching my back, sharing my burdens, keeping me human when Xi Corp tried to make me a machine. Whatever else happens, I know Lawrence. I trust Lawrence.)

”We will,” she said, her voice gaining strength from his presence. ”We’ll destroy this place, their surveillance network, everything. Give them back their lives. Their privacy. Their humanity.”

She moved to the platform, to the transparent floor where the core pulsed like a heart begging to be stopped. This was where the bomb would go. Where it would erase the core, the servers, the entire surveillance network in a flash of nuclear fire that would be visible from orbit.

The backpack weighed heavily—not from the bomb’s mass, small as a ration pack but dense with compressed matter—but from its meaning. Thousands of lives freed with the press of a button. Xi Corp crippled, their spy network shattered. The Centauri’s future secured.

And her death, almost certain.

(The bomb has a manual trigger, but also a dead-man’s switch tied to my neural implant. If my brain stops, if they capture me and try to mind-mine me for Eden’s location... boom. Simple. Clean. Final.)

She’d known from the start she might not survive this mission. Had accepted it when she volunteered to carry the device herself. If Xi Corp caught her, they’d tear through her memories like data miners through a corrupted drive, searching for Eden’s coordinates, for the location of the children she’d sworn to protect.

She’d die before she let that happen. The bomb would make sure of it.

(One life for thousands. Good math. The kind of equation that makes sense when you’ve got GESS children counting on you.)

”Jayde.” Lawrence’s voice cut through her dark calculations. He stood by the screens, pointing at a feed that made her blood freeze. ”Look at this.”

She joined him, eyes locking on footage that punched her in the gut. A family—two adults, three children—eating dinner around a small table, laughing at some private joke, unaware that their eyes were Xi Corp’s windows into their lives. The footage glitched, cycling through each family member’s visual feed in rapid succession. Even the youngest, a girl who couldn’t be more than eight years old.

(Children. They’re chipping children. Watching them play. Recording their dreams. What kind of monsters...?)

”They don’t know,” Lawrence said, his voice soft with horror and rage. ”They think they’re safe. Free. They have no idea they’re living in a glass house while Xi Corp watches from the shadows.”

Jayde’s fists clenched, nails biting into her palms through her armored gloves. The pain was nothing compared to the fury building in her chest like a reactor approaching critical mass. ”This ends tonight.”

”Hell yes it does.” Lawrence turned, taking in the chamber’s vastness with the eye of a professional soldier. ”How long for the op?”

”Five minutes for data extraction,” Jayde said, checking her HUD’s mission timer. ”Then we plant the bomb, set a thirty-minute timer, and extract. Should be enough time to clear the blast radius.”

”Vaporize this hellhole,” Lawrence finished with grim satisfaction. ”And everyone inside who chose to be part of this.”

”They made their choice,” Jayde said, her voice hard as durasteel, cold as the space between stars. ”Everyone here is complicit. They know what they’re doing to our people.”

”Agreed.” He hesitated, the soldier in him running calculations she could see in his eyes. ”The GESS kill-chips—will destroying the core kill them? Collateral damage assessment?”

She’d wrestled with that question for weeks, running scenarios, consulting with every tech specialist in the Centauri network. (Keep them alive, or free them from this violation? What’s worse—death or living as corporate puppets?)

”Intelligence says the kill-switches are passive monitoring systems with termination capability,” she said carefully. ”Destroying the core should sever the connection without triggering the switches. They’ll be free. Finally free.”

”Should.”

”Should,” she echoed, hating the uncertainty. ”Ninety percent chance it frees them clean. Five percent, it does nothing—they stay monitored but alive. Five percent...” She couldn’t say it. Five percent chance they’d kill thousands to save them from surveillance.

(War math. The kind of arithmetic that stains your soul but has to be done anyway.)

”Acceptable odds,” Lawrence said, cold and certain as a computer running calculations. ”They’re already dead inside, living like this. Their souls are murdered by constant watching. At least this gives them a chance at real life.”

War was brutal arithmetic. Sometimes you lost the ones you fought for to save them from a fate worse than death.

”Team One, power distribution secured,” Kira’s voice crackled through the comm with professional satisfaction. ”Charges placed and primed. Ready to extract on your signal.”

”Team Two, data extraction complete,” Elena reported, excitement barely contained in her voice. ”Commander, we’ve got everything. Kill-switch protocols, surveillance algorithms, financial records, personnel files—the whole rotten network. This is enough to bring down three sectors of Xi Corp operations.”

”Acknowledged,” Jayde replied, keying her comm for general broadcast. ”Rendezvous at extraction point Beta. Lawrence and I will finish here and meet you topside. Twenty minutes to boom, people. Move with purpose.”

”Copy, Commander. See you in the light,” came the chorus of responses.

(Twenty minutes. Twenty minutes to plant a bomb and change the galaxy. Twenty minutes to free thousands of people from digital slavery. Twenty minutes to probably die.)

The comm fell silent, leaving only the hum of quantum processors and the whisper of life support systems.

Jayde stood over the transparent floor, watching the core’s pulse like a mockery of life—regular, mechanical, soulless as the corporation that built it. This was it. The moment everything changed. She reached for the backpack, fingers closing on the straps—

And froze.

Slow. Deliberate. The measured click of polished boots on metal grating. Multiple people, unhurried, unafraid, moving with the confidence of predators who’d already won.

Because they didn’t need stealth. Because this had always been a trap.

(Sixty years. Sixty fucking years, and I walked into this like a recruit on her first drop. How? How did they—?)

Jayde spun, weapon raised, training overriding shock as muscle memory kicked in. Lawrence mirrored her movement, their backs together as they’d stood a thousand times before, covering each other’s blind spots with practiced precision.

The main entrance irised open with a hiss of equalizing pressure.

Vice President Xi stepped through the portal like a nightmare given flesh, flanked by twelve bodyguards whose weapons gleamed like promises of death under the chamber’s cold light. Corporate elite forces—augmented, enhanced, probably worth more than most planetary defense budgets.

Xi himself was everything the rebels had painted him as in their darkest propaganda—tall, commanding, draped in wealth that screamed of Earth’s lost luxuries. His suit was woven from fabrics that whispered of credits she couldn’t count, his hair slicked back with products worth more than a soldier’s yearly pay. The smile on his lips was a blade, sharp and soulless as a vacuum.

(The boogeyman. The corporate overlord himself. Here. Now. Why?)

”Ah,” he said, his voice smooth as poisoned silk, cultured with the accent of Earth’s elite. ”What a pleasant surprise indeed. SN1098 and SN1055. My wayward children. It’s been far too long since we’ve had a proper family reunion.”

The designation numbers hit like ice water in her veins. Numbers she hadn’t heard in years, hadn’t wanted to hear. The numbers that marked her as property, as a weapon forged in Xi Corp’s foundries of human misery.

(He knows. He knows exactly who we are. This isn’t a coincidence. This is...)

The trap. The perfect, beautiful trap she’d walked into with her eyes wide open.

”You son of a bitch,” she breathed, finger finding her trigger. ”You’ve been watching us all along.”

Xi’s smile widened, showing teeth white as polished bone. ”Watching? My dear SN1098—may I call you Jayde? Such a lovely name Lawrence chose for you—watching implies a passive role. I prefer to think of myself as... conducting. An orchestra of rebellion, playing exactly the music I composed.”

The words hit her like physical blows, each revelation a knife between her ribs. Lawrence’s name. Their rebellion. The implication that...

(No. No, that’s impossible. Sixty years. Sixty years together. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. Not Lawrence. Not my brother.)

But even as denial roared through her mind, pieces were falling into place with the terrible logic of revealed truth. The too-easy intelligence about this base. The convenient access codes. The skeleton security. Lawrence insisting on coming despite his injuries.

The perfect trap, baited with the thing she couldn’t resist—the chance to free her people from digital slavery.

”You see, Jayde,” Xi continued, his voice conversational as a corporate briefing, ”every rebellion needs its symbols. Its heroes. Its martyrs. And what better martyr than the legendary Commander Jayde of the Centauri? The woman who threw away paradise for the sake of the downtrodden?”

His brown eyes glittered with cold amusement, and in their depths, she saw her death reflected a thousand times.

”Welcome to the end of your story, my dear. I do hope you’ll die as beautifully as you’ve lived.”
