Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

Several weeks after Raymond had declared that Althoff needed a government, he walked out of the castle one morning and realized the strangest thing about success was how ordinary it looked.

There were no System notifications announcing that bureaucracy had achieved some glorious milestone, no crowds cheering because a clerk had finally learned where marriage records belonged, and certainly no songs about properly categorized expenditure reports. People simply moved.

A wagon loaded with timber rolled past the castle toward a government storehouse with a stamped allocation sheet tied beneath the driver’s seat.

Raymond stopped on the castle steps, watched them disappear down the road, and smiled.

Lily, standing beside him with a small satchel containing his notebook and morning correspondence, followed his gaze.

”What?” she asked.

”Nothing,” Raymond said. ”That’s why I’m happy.”

They walked through Althoff without an escort beyond two Household Knights keeping a respectful distance behind them.

At the central road, Raymond spotted Boris speaking with three military instructors beside a group of recruits. Nobody interrupted him to ask about market stalls, missing livestock, merchant sheds, or workshop arguments.

Boris noticed Raymond and gave him a look that seemed suspiciously peaceful.

”No goats today?” Raymond asked.

Boris folded his arms. ”Not one.”

”Any merchants asking where to build storage sheds?”

”Darric threatened to arrest the last one for disturbing military training.”

Darric, passing nearby with two Watchmen, immediately protested. ”I told him to visit Public Works.”

Boris shrugged. ”My version is better.”

The distinction between the Watch and the military had become visible even to ordinary citizens. Darric’s Watchmen patrolled market streets, gates, residential lanes, and public buildings in smaller groups, dealing with thefts, disturbances, lost property, drunken arguments, and routine civil security.

Boris’s soldiers trained outside the busiest districts, guarded strategic locations, maintained territorial patrols, and prepared for threats that required more than dragging an angry drunk away from a tavern.

Jonathan’s Household Knights remained another layer entirely, operating from the castle and answering directly to Raymond while coordinating with Boris when necessary.

The separation was still young, and equipment was not yet standardized enough to make every group visually distinct, but people had already learned who to approach.

Raymond had not realized how much administrative noise Boris had been absorbing until that noise disappeared from the man’s daily work.

Marianne experienced an equally dramatic liberation. When Raymond returned briefly to the castle near midday, he found her inspecting the kitchens and discussing household supplies with the head cook instead of sorting clinic inventories or refugee medical requests.

Selene Arward now controlled medical administration, sanitation records, healer assignments, medicine inventories, and preparations for the future Medical Hall.

Marianne still attended the Lord’s Council as temporary civil welfare representative when her experience was useful, and Department leaders frequently sought her advice because she remembered details from winter that no ledger captured.

But she was once again primarily Head Maid of House Althoff.

”You look happier,” Raymond observed.

Marianne gave him a level stare. ”Yesterday I spent an entire day managing servants, kitchens, guest rooms, laundry, and household stores.”

Raymond waited. ”And?”

”Nobody asked me to organize a fever ward.” Her expression softened into unmistakable satisfaction. ”It was wonderful.”

Lily had undergone an even more obvious transformation. The enormous warehouse ledgers were gone from her arms.

She no longer spent evenings reconciling ration lists or correcting population totals that should never have belonged to a ten-year-old in the first place.

Instead, she followed Raymond through his schedule, kept his personal correspondence organized, reminded him which council meetings he had forgotten, carried documents between his study and Alaric when necessary, and occasionally discovered errors because apparently removing her official responsibilities had done nothing to reduce her enthusiasm for noticing other people’s mistakes.

When Raymond entered his study that afternoon, Lily placed three documents on his desk. ”These need your signature. These two only need you to read them. This one is from Mister Alaric, and I think the third page has the wrong total.”

Raymond glanced at her. ”Did he ask you to audit it?”

”No.”

”Of course not.”

She smiled brightly.

Raymond sighed and reached for the third page anyway.

Agriculture had changed from Harlan and Gideon running themselves exhausted into something resembling an actual organization.

Five agricultural specialists now supervised different technical areas while field overseers handled clusters of farms and clerks maintained land assignments, planting records, livestock distributions, tool requests, and irrigation schedules.

Farmers still knew Harlan and regularly stopped him in the street, but he no longer personally answered every request. Routine matters remained with clerks and overseers; difficult disputes climbed to Gideon or Harlan.

When Raymond passed the Agriculture building, Harlan was outside arguing with one specialist about expanding vegetable acreage while three farmers entered without acknowledging the Baron walking twenty paces away.

Raymond found that deeply satisfying. They did not need him. At least not for this.

The same pattern repeated across town. Trade applications accumulated on Ysabel’s desks instead of Raymond’s. Mara’s Public Works clerks processed construction permits, repair requests, road complaints, and material schedules.

The Civil Registry continued turning Althoff’s population into named households with property, occupations, births, deaths, marriages, and citizenship records.

Ormond had already dispatched survey teams with hunters, assistants, measuring equipment, and guards into sections of the expanded territory, gradually replacing blank spaces with usable maps.

Some teams searched for stone and clay, others followed waterways, while another prepared to investigate forest resources farther east. Corvin, meanwhile, was building something Raymond had never expected to appreciate: a logistics network.

Warehouses were numbered, inventories standardized, wagon pools recorded, draft animals assigned through schedules, and government materials moved using written requisitions rather than whoever shouted loudest.

It was not perfect. Clerks made mistakes. Departments argued over jurisdiction. Citizens still occasionally appeared at the wrong building.

Harlan hated certain forms. Mara wanted more engineers than Althoff possessed. Ysabel wanted better market records.

Corvin complained that half the old warehouse inventories had been written by people who apparently believed counting was optional.

Alaric seemed to generate new administrative procedures every time Raymond looked away.

Yet the mistakes themselves had changed. They were no longer failures caused by nobody being responsible. They were problems inside systems that now had someone responsible for fixing them.

That distinction mattered.

Raymond understood it fully when he returned to the castle and discovered there were only seven documents requiring his attention. None concerned goats, boots, ordinary repairs, market stalls, household registrations, warehouse allocations, or farmers disputing boundaries.

One concerned expansion beyond an approved agricultural zone. Two involved major expenditures. Another required his decision on military recruitment targets.

The remaining three dealt with strategic resources, city planning, and an external merchant proposal.

Problems still reached him, but they were the problems a ruler should actually decide. Everything else moved beneath him without waiting for his hand.

Late that afternoon, Mara Kest and Lucan Veyr arrived together carrying a thick collection of plans. Alaric joined them in Raymond’s study while Lily distributed tea and immediately positioned herself where she could see the drawings.

Mara spread the first sheet across his desk. ”The administrative groundwork is ready, my Lord. Not finished, but ready enough to begin.”

Public Works had calculated available labor pools without stripping agriculture, military training, workshops, or essential services. Lucan had converted portions of the City Master Development Blueprint Raymond had copied into practical construction phases.

Preliminary surveys identified routes for major roads, drainage channels, water infrastructure, warehouse expansion, and the first new public buildings. Material estimates existed for stone, timber, lime, clay, iron fittings, tools, wagons, and food required to sustain crews.

Corvin had begun arranging supply schedules. Ormond’s surveys would continue feeding new information into later stages.

Raymond studied the plans quietly. Weeks ago, the future Althoff City had been almost absurd.

He possessed blueprints, money, System Points, specialists, and thousands of people, yet trying to build everything then would have created chaos.

Now Public Works could organize construction. Treasury could pay approved expenses. Logistics could move materials. Survey could map routes and resources.

Agriculture could protect food production while labor shifted into construction. Trade could manage the commercial disruption. Health could monitor sanitation.

The Registry knew where people lived.

Military Affairs and the Watch could secure worksites without confusing their roles.

The city no longer depended on Raymond personally coordinating every moving piece.

After everyone left, Raymond locked his study door and stood beside the window overlooking Althoff. Then, alone, he activated The Lord’s Eye.

The familiar ghostly overlay spread across his vision. Roads extended beyond muddy tracks. Districts replaced scattered buildings.

Water lines, drainage routes, markets, workshops, administrative structures, warehouses, expanded defenses, and residential streets unfolded across the settlement.

The old Althoff remained at the center, surrounded by the outline of something vastly larger.

Before, Raymond had seen a city that did not exist.

Now he saw a city Althoff could actually build.
