After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World

A/N: HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! Time runs so damned fast T_T

While Alterra was exploding with development internally, their outward development was not ignored either.

For example, the roads to and from Alterra and the nearest settlements had been fully developed, and were still even being improved. Further, more and more roads were being built, connecting various villages to each other as well.

For one, the bitumen roads to their neighbors and satellites were further reinforced, and even planted certain flora to further visually segragate them, making them more noticeable.

They lined them with various plants, like the Citronella/Metal grass plants that had been improved by Althea and Thorance through various breeding methods, improved using their wood abilities as well as through potions.1

The process was interesting, and Althea had to admit she had fun figuring this one out.

This Metal grass was the grass Ansel, Kimura,1 and their group found a long time ago when they found the now-consumed iron bogs. They studied the composition of the soil in which the plants grew most robustly, and designed a growth plan from there.

For the metal grass, they enhanced its effects by using black metal byproducts (which were mostly just waste material for them) in their fertilizer, maximizing the sustainability and environmental friendliness of the whole thing.

Although they were, for now, useless against monsters past level 10 and above, one had to remember that the majority of the mobs were still at this level, even in Towns. The higher the level, the more difficult it was to procreate, so the majority of monsters, in terms of population, were no more than level 10 to 12.

Among tens of thousands of beasts attacking Alterra continuously, only a quarter of them were actually above this level.

Of course, this ratio slightly skewed upwards upon their upgrade to a Level 2 Town, but that just increased the overall number of monsters attracted to them rather than changing the fact that the majority of monsters were still around level 10 and below.

Not to mention, every territory around Alterra were Villages. Further away from Alterra, with the roads lined with these, this setup had already saved hundreds of lives.

That said, the road couldn’t completely block monsters, especially the higher-level ones, and especially if they were the only ’meals’ in the vicinity.

However, it could slow them down and make them hesitate, which would be enough for the travelers to gather themselves.

There was also the Prismatic Moss, which would be planted every couple of meters in alternation, on both sides of the road. This was the so-called bioluminescent or glow-in-the-dark plant they had been growing in the tunnels.

Just recently, the team had finally managed to let it prosper above ground. It was achieved sustainably because, interestingly, it also had a symbiotic relationship with the specially-bred citronella plant.

The fern needed a particular compound, which was rich in anaerobic conditions; the other plants’ byproduct happened to be exactly that.

The first phase was to line up the road from Alterra to Limestone Valley and Iron Mountains with these plants. They were also planted in a way that they would propagate along this line, so there was less cost for planting as well as in maintenance.

At first, they would be quite sparse, but in time and with some fertilizers, the glowing line would be more defined.

They were rather robust plants as well, so even if they were crushed by mobs, some were likely to survive. With the right conditions, even if they were carried over by the monsters’ feet as they traveled, they could provide some dim lighting on dark nights, which would ultimately help people find the roads nearby.

Other than this, there were new camp sites that formed organically through the months.

After all, the travel from one place to another, especially on foot, was not short. With Alterra’s influence expanding so far outside, it also attracted a lot of refugees coming from afar.

People had to find decent places to rest, whether they were caves, small hills, or the like.

At some point, some nice hiding spaces spread out orally, with those in-the-know would send their maps to friends who’d pass by the area, and so on.

Because traffic to and fro Alterra was large, what would usually take years happened within a few months, and some areas simply became formal camp sites that travelers knew about and used every time.

With Alterran guards and citizens passing by, these areas became more and more developed, receiving more amenities, until they were just formally built up, complete with pathways heading there.

For the several camp sites, more were formed midway between the two satellites. They were given similar amenities to those near Alterra.

For example, proper rest areas made by woodworkers were added. Woodworkers were some of the most common professions in Alterra, and therefore, there had always been a surplus of them.

In other places, their jobs were constrained to making simple and useless things like small chairs, boxes, utensils, and so on.

Wooden swords that could actually cause some damage to monsters were the Class E weaponsmiths’ territory so they did not get inheritances for those. The non-essential things they could do barely put food on the table, let alone having so many rivals doing the same thing.

In Alterra, however, this profession was one of the most stable ones, and they received an influx of new woodworkers every time they received a large number of refugees.

Because people’s lives never stopped improving in Alterra, the need for their items never ran out. The development led by the government itself was also continuous.

This profession could be said to be one of the easiest to awaken, to maintain, and most sustainable.

And because they were formal products of woodworkers, they were far sturdier and even had mild regeneration effects! They were the perfect tools and furniture to use even outside the territory.

Hey, most people around the world were already happy to have decent with-effect furniture at home. Who else loved to throw them around outside?
