Villains Aren't Stepping Stones!

The colossal profound ark glided smoothly through the evening clouds, its massive jade and gold hull cutting through the sky with a low, rhythmic hum.

Down in the narrow, dimly lit corridors of the vessel’s lower hold, away from the bustling main deck and the loud toasts of the celebrated sect disciples, the air was cold, stale, and silent.

Shen Xun’er had retreated into a shadowed alcove near the vessel’s secondary formation ballast, her knees pulled tightly to her chest, her back pressed against the cold ironwood wall.

She was staring blankly at the smooth surface of the jade entry token cradled in her trembling fingers, her mind still trapped in the suffocating spiral of self-doubt.

TAP.

The soft, weightless sound of a boot striking the polished floorboards shattered the quiet.

Shen Xun’er froze, her breath instantly catching in her throat.

The ambient temperature in the corridor dropped by several degrees, replaced by a dense, unyielding aura of authority that made her bone marrow vibrate in instinctive submission.

She scrambled to her feet, her body swaying nervously as she pressed her back against the bulkhead, her eyes wide.

Shen Haoran stepped out from the shadows of the corridor, his dark robes flowing like quiet midnight around his tall, imposing silhouette.

He moved with effortless, predatory grace, stepping directly into her personal space until he was standing barely a foot away, his towering frame completely blotting out the warm light from the distant sconces and cornering her against the wall.

”Why did you come here?” Haoran asked, his voice low and measured, stripped of all inflection.

Shen Xun’er timidly shuffled her feet, her hands instinctively clutching the fabric of her dress, her gaze falling toward the floorboards.

”I... I wanted to follow you, young master,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly beneath the suffocating weight of his presence. ”When the spatial collapse scattered us across the continent, I checked the academy token immediately... You were the closest coordinate, and decided to join you. I traveled without resting just to reach this city and enter the secret realm by your side.”

Haoran did not offer a word of comfort. He looked down at her with cold, unblinking golden eyes that seemed to cut straight through her skull, dissecting every microscopic flicker of anxiety across her face.

”You rushed here out of instinct, yet you brought nothing of value with you,” Haoran stated coldly, his words landing like heavy hammer blows against her fragile composure. ”Tell me, Xun’er, what purpose do you serve by standing beside me in your current state?”

Shen Xun’er flinched visibly, her knuckles turning bone-white. ”Young master... I—”

”In the past year, ever since we consolidated our rule over Boundless Sky City and stepped into the higher echelons of the academy, I have watched your progress,” Haoran interrupted, his tone chillingly clinical. ”And with every passing month, your performance has steadily deteriorated. You have hit a wall, yet instead of breaking it with your own hands, you have allowed hesitation to fester in your dao like a rot.”

He stepped half an inch closer, the pressure of his Spirit Ascension foundation subtly bearing down upon the corridor, making it difficult for her to draw a full breath.

”The Shen Clan has no room for dead weight,” Haoran continued, his voice devoid of mercy. ”The Ten Crowns exist solely to pave the way for my dominion across the cosmos. Every seat was forged in blood and maintained through peerless excellence. Yet right now, you are stagnating. You are hesitating. You are actively beginning to drag the others down with your faltering pace.”

Tears of pure, agonizing humiliation pricked at the corners of Shen Xun’er’s eyes as she bit her lower lip so hard that the metallic tang of fresh blood bloomed across her tongue.

”I’m not... I’m not dragging anyone down!” she choked out, looking up at him with desperate, pleading amber eyes. ”Young master, please! I’ve been cultivating day and night! I reached the 5th Stage of the Nascent Soul Realm! I fought in that arena today and secured my entry token fairly! I promise I will not hold the circle back! I won’t drag anyone down, I swear it!”

”You scraped by a mid-tier mortal through a pathetic battle of attrition,” Haoran said flatly, his words completely devoid of empathy. ”A man four stages above you, yet his foundation was hollow, his techniques crude, and his meridians clogged with impurities from lower realm. Against such an opponent, anyone decent enough would have ended the bout before his broadsword left its sheath. Instead, you cowered behind your guard for twenty minutes like a cornered beast, terrified that taking a single offensive risk would cost you the match.”

He leaned in slightly, his golden eyes narrowing into sharp, unforgiving daggers.

”I am starting to lose any lingering trust in your martial capability, Xun’er. If you continue down this path, if you remain a coward who measures her steps out of fear of stumbling, I will not hesitate to strip your title, cast you out of my circle, and abandon you to whatever backwater place we go next.”

Abandon you.

Those two words echoed inside Shen Xun’er’s mind like a death knell, shattering the final remnants of her composure.

The thought of being cast aside, of being left behind while Haoran, Huo Yue, Shen Xinye, Shen Ying, and the others ascended into the higher heavens, was a nightmare infinitely more terrifying than death itself.

”No! Please, young master, don’t abandon me!” Shen Xun’er cried out softly, her hands reaching out as if to grasp his sleeve, before pulling them back in terrified restraint. ”I will change! I promise I will never lose a match again! I will never let another opponent push me back! I will be careful, I will calculate every movement, and I promise I won’t be reckless! I’ll do whatever it takes to ensure victory without making mistakes! I will never be reckless again, I swear it upon my soul!”

Haoran just stared at her in dead silence.

Hearing her frantic, desperate promises, vowing to never lose, promising to be even more careful, swearing to completely eradicate all recklessness, he slowly closed his eyes and shook his head in deep, unmasked disappointment.

She still didn’t understand.

She was completely, utterly blind to the true poison eating away at her martial heart.

He wanted her to realize the truth: that she had become so thoroughly consumed and paralyzed by the fear of failure that it was actively destroying the very foundation of her Dao.

Her martial dao was born from the ferocious, unbridled spirit of primordial dragons—a path that demanded savagery, instinctual dominance, and the fearless willingness to tear through an opponent’s flesh even if it meant taking a blade to the ribs.

Yet here she was, desperately promising to be ’more careful,’ to ’calculate more,’ and to ’never be reckless.’

By trying to fight with fear-driven restraint, she was placing heavy iron chains upon a wild dragon’s neck, smothering her innate genius beneath a mountain of neurotic self-preservation.

Yet, seeing the trembling, shattered girl standing before him, Shen Haoran chose not to spoon-feed her the answer.

A cultivator who needed their superior to explain the nature of their own heart was a flawed tool that would inevitably break under the pressure of true warfare.

If she could not pierce the veil of her own mind, she truly had no right to stand in his shadow.

Haoran straightened his back and took a step back, the suffocating aura slowly receding into his frame.

He looked at her one last time, his expression returning to that cool, untouchable sovereign mask, and left behind a quiet message before turning away.

”A dragon does not reign over the skies because it has learned how to avoid the storm, Xun’er. It reigns because it realizes that its own roar is the tempest that tears the sky apart. Until you remember why you were given claws, you will remain nothing more than an overgrown lizard hiding from the rain.”

Without waiting for her to respond, Shen Haoran turned on his heel, his dark robes swirling gracefully as he walked down the quiet corridor and vanished into the shadows, leaving Shen Xun’er standing completely alone in the cold hold, his parting words echoing like a haunting riddle in the hollow chambers of her soul.

The long, dimly lit corridor of the profound ark’s lower hold hummed with a deep, mechanical vibration as the massive vessel surged through the high-altitude cloud layers.

The stale, recycled air carried the faint scent of polished spirit-iron and burning alchemical fuel, drifting past the array-etched bulkheads in a steady draft.

Shen Haoran walked with slow, unhurried steps, his dark robes trailing behind him like quiet midnight.

His footsteps made no sound against the reinforced floorboards, yet despite his calm and untouchable exterior, his mind was actively dissecting the encounter he had just left behind.

His golden eyes narrowed into thin slits as he analyzed her psychological state from every tactical angle.

In the hierarchy of the Shen Clan’s inner circle, weakness in physical cultivation could always be rectified with high-tier marrow-cleansing pills, divine beast bloodlines, or ancient scripture infusions.

But a fracture in a cultivator’s martial Dao, a rot that took root within their fundamental confidence, was an entirely different, far more insidious poison.

He wondered just what made her this timid?

Xun’er had never been a cowardly girl by nature. From the moment she had been selected into one of the Crowns, no, even before that, she had always been a feral, hot-headed prodigy who charged into battle with bared fangs, laughing wildly as her fist crushed her enemies.

She was a wild creature of instinct, forged to tear through opposition with brute, untamed momentum.

So what had broken that untamed edge?

What had placed those heavy, neurotic chains around her mind?

Did something happen during their war against the Botanist Faction?

He remembered very clearly that she started acting strange around that time, and ever since that campaign, her fiery, reckless charge had subtly diminished.

She had begun overanalyzing every single step, checking formations three times before crossing a threshold, and hesitating to commit to lethal, all-in offensive maneuvers out of an unspoken, suffocating terror that a single mistake would cause a catastrophic failure.

Haoran stood on the spot for a few seconds, deep in thought, his tall silhouette frozen under the dim glow of an azure formation lantern embedded in the ceiling.

’A dragon that has felt the sting of venom and now fears the grass beneath its feet...’ Haoran mused internally. ’If she cannot burn that memory away with her own flames, she will forever remain a crippled drake.’

Yet, in his worldview, every individual was ultimately responsible for forging their own path to the peak.

He had provided the spark, left the clue, and made the stakes crystal clear.

Whether she rose from the ashes as a true dragon or withered away as an abandoned pawn was entirely in her own hands.

Haoran shook his head slowly, clearing the lingering thoughts from his mind, and continued walking down the passageway with measured, regal grace.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZT—HUMMMMMMM!

At that exact moment, the profound ark’s structural chassis shuddered as a sequence of ancient, amplified runic sound-arrays echoed through every cabin, corridor, and training room across the entire ship.

A clear, resonant spiritual chime chimed three times, followed by the authoritative voice of a senior White Dragon Sect elder booming throughout the vessel.

[ATTENTION ALL PARTICIPANTS! ALL SECT DISCIPLES, ELDERS, AND INDEPENDENT CULTIVATORS! ASSEMBLE AT THE MAIN EXPEDITIONARY HALL IMMEDIATELY AND PREPARE FOR DESCENT! WE HAVE OFFICIALLY ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION!]

The announcement broke the silence of the lower decks, instantly replaced by the hurried shuffling of boots, the clinking of enchanted armor, and the sharp hum of drawn weapons being readied for transit.

Shen Haoran adjusted the collar of his dark robes and smoothly navigated the wide central staircase, ascending straight toward the upper pavilion of the vessel.

Pushing through the heavy, carved ironwood double doors, Haoran entered the massive main hall of the profound ark.

The chamber was colossal, spanning several hundred paces in diameter with high, vaulted ceilings held up by spiraling dragon pillars carved from pure white celestial marble.

Intricate floor arrays pulsed with soft golden luminescence, stabilizing the atmospheric pressure inside the hall against the exterior winds.

Everyone was already there, packed into disciplined, structured formations across the wide floor.

On the eastern wing of the hall, the two hundred core disciples representing the ten illustrious regional sects stood in ten distinct, uniform cohorts under the watchful, solemn eyes of their respective Spirit Ascension elders.

Disciples of a sword sect held their blades vertical against their chests.

The armored warriors of another sect stood like unyielding bronze statues.

And the veiled maidens of an all female sect radiated a cool, misty frost that chilled the surrounding flagstones.

On the western wing, the hundred victorious independent cultivators, including rugged brawlers, wandering daoist hermits, and solitary blade masters, stood in a looser, more restless cluster, their eyes burning with intense ambition, greed, and nervous anticipation as they clutched their glowing jade entry tokens.

Among the crowd, tucked quietly in the far corner near the base of a dragon pillar, Shen Xun’er stood with her head slightly lowered, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, the words Haoran had spoken in the lower corridor still echoing heavily inside her mind.

At the very front of the grand hall, standing upon an elevated, tiered marble platform beneath the grand crest of the coiled White Dragon, was Xun Xie’er.

Seeing the three hundred and ten participants fully assembled, Xun Xie’er took a graceful step forward, her slender hands folded politely over her waist.

She gave a small, composed speech, her melodious voice carrying the effortless, clear projection of her peak 9th-stage Nirvana Rebirth cultivation, washing over the hall like a refreshing spiritual breeze.

”Fellow cultivators, after a long journey, we have finally arrived,” Xun Xie’er began, her silver eyes sweeping across the sea of faces with warm, sovereign majesty. ”Beneath our hull lies the Valley of the Sleeping Dragon—the sacred, primordial rift where the seal of the Celestial Dragon Vault has finally aligned with the celestial stars. For the next thirty days, the boundary gates will remain open. Within that domain, ancient draconic legacies, lost martial scriptures, and primordial elemental veins await those with the strength, wisdom, and destiny to claim them.”

Her tone subtly hardened, carrying a sharp, unmistakable edge of authority.

”But remember this, do not butcher each other outside the bounds of martial competition, respect the ancient site, and above all—forge your own legend with honor. May the ancestral spirits of the Ancient Heaven Star guide your blades.”

Xun Xie’er paused, raising her right hand, her slender sleeve fluttering gracefully as she formed a simple release mudra toward the grand bow of the vessel.

RUMBLE—CLANG—SKRRRRR!

With a heavy, pneumatic roar that vibrated through the floorboards, the massive ironwood and gold-plated blast doors at the front of the profound ark slowly ground open, parting outward into the roaring sky.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH—!!!!!

A colossal squall of fresh, high-altitude mountain winds and dense, ancient spiritual mist instantly rushed into the grand hall, blowing the robes and banners of the gathered cultivators back like snapping sails.

Through the wide, open expanse of the threshold, the breathtaking, primordial landscape of their destination was fully revealed to the world.

Below the hovering ark lay a colossal, bottomless mountain chasm spanning hundreds of leagues across the continent, a terrifying rift in the earth where rivers of molten gold and radiant jade-green spiritual mist swirled together in a massive, slowly rotating vortex.

At the center of this abyssal valley, rising out of the glowing mist like a titanic celestial monolith, stood the colossal, thousand-foot-tall stone gates of the Celestial Dragon Vault, carved with the coiled likeness of an ancient, primordial dragon whose stone eyes glowed with blinding, incandescent solar light!

Right now, the gates of the secret realm were about to open.
