Name: Chen Yu!

Talent: Infinite Physique (Tier One 0/100) [Unique Talent]

Skill: Spirit Devouring (Beginner 0/100)

Source of Life: 2 points

”Huh?”

Chen Yu’s eyes lit up as he looked at the interface.

”Two points of Source of Life...”

Chen Yu was astonished when he noticed the number next to Source of Life.

’It increased by two points of Source of Life. How did that happen?’

Chen Yu’s mind raced as he carefully recalled everything that had happened today.

Mutant beasts!

Suddenly, Chen Yu locked onto an idea.

All day today, aside from fleeing, he had only killed two mutant beasts.

The increase in his Source of Life had to be related to the mutant beasts.

’Killing mutant beasts increases it...’

As the realization dawned on him, a thrill of excitement coursed through Chen Yu.

All he needed was a method; the real fear was not having one at all!

But Chen Yu quickly calmed down.

’I’ve found the method, but...’

’At this rate, how many mutant beasts will I have to kill?’

A single Level 1 Hyenadon only increased his Source of Life by one point, while his Physique Evolution required a full one hundred points!

Upgrading the Spirit Devouring Skill also required a hundred points of Source of Life.

By that calculation, to achieve his next Evolution, he would need to kill at least one hundred Level 1 mutant beasts!

And if he wanted to upgrade his skill as well, that meant he’d have to kill two hundred mutant beasts!

With his current strength, having gone through one Physique Evolution, he was much stronger. Killing a single Level 1 mutant beast was no problem.

But facing two Level 1 mutant beasts at once would be tough, and against three, the chances of failure would be extremely high!

”Two hundred...”

Chen Yu fell into deep thought.

’How long would it take to kill that many mutant beasts?’

If a beast tide broke out, it wouldn’t be a problem to encounter hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of mutant beasts at once.

But beast tides always brought with them extremely powerful mutant beasts.

Forget Level 1 mutant beasts; there would be plenty of Level 2, 3, 4, and 5 beasts.

The larger the scale of the beast tide, the higher the probability of powerful mutant beasts appearing.

Beast tides were divided into several levels of scale.

The lowest was a C-Class beast tide, which involved at least tens of thousands of mutant beasts.

A B-Class beast tide numbered in the hundreds of thousands.

An A-Class beast tide ranged from one million to ten million.

The highest level was an S-Class beast tide, with numbers easily exceeding a hundred million.

Once a beast tide of the highest level broke out, it would be a Destruction Level event.

A top-tier beast tide like that couldn’t be held back by a single Safety Zone—not even ten or a hundred Safety Zones could be certain of withstanding it.

In his memory, the Crane City Safety Zone where he used to live had been attacked by a B-Class beast tide!

A horde of over one hundred thousand beasts had directly destroyed the Crane City Safety Zone, leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of its people.

And that was after they had already evacuated a portion of the population.

The terror of mutant beasts wasn’t just their massive size; powerful mutant beasts possessed powerful abilities.

Similar to the abilities of the Awakened, they were bizarre and varied!

Breathing fire, spouting water, flying, burrowing into the earth...

Some mutant beasts could even conceal the entire horde, making them seem to vanish into thin air.

They couldn’t be found by any technological means of detection: sonar, optical sensors, laser detection, life-field magnetic scans, satellite surveillance... nothing worked.

The Crane City Safety Zone was a prime example. Over a hundred thousand mutant beasts had burst out from underground in the city center, catching everyone completely off guard.

Breached from within!

Impossible to defend against!

Powerful mutant beasts weren’t brainless; they possessed great intelligence.

They were practically no different from the demons and monsters of mythology.

This was another reason why beast tides were so terrifying.

An external assault was more manageable. At least you could detect it and have time to evacuate.

But an internal breach was just too insane.

It was like they’d fucking dropped out of the sky, appearing right in front of you and causing an immediate collapse!

’Killing them one by one... I’d have to swing this saber until it’s smoking...’

Chen Yu sighed inwardly, gazing at his Alloy Long Saber.

The good news: he’d found a way to obtain Source of Life!

The bad news: the method was a bit... life-threatening.

Small numbers meant a lot of time, but large numbers were simply unsurvivable!

’I’ll just take it one step at a time... I should wait until I get to the Qing City Safety Zone to think about it.’

His mind now calm, Chen Yu activated his Spirit Devouring Skill, absorbing the Heaven and Earth Spiritual Qi to replenish the Qi in his body.

Right now, his own safety wasn’t even guaranteed, so he couldn’t afford to worry about all that.

First, he needed to get settled. At the very least, he had to secure food, water, and shelter.

If he rushed out blindly, he would only be walking to his death.

...

The night passed quickly.

Dawn broke, and the first light of day rose.

Inside the cave, Chen Yu woke from his sleep.

The night had been safe, but sleeping in this cave had made his ass hurt.

His whole body ached for no apparent reason.

”How’s your recovery?”

Chen Yu asked, looking at Ma Xiang.

Ma Xiang grinned. ”Physically, I’m fine. I’ve recovered about seventy percent of my Qi.”

”Let’s eat something and then we’ll go,” Chen Yu said, dividing the remaining supplies. The two of them only ate until they were half-full.

Tossing the backpack to Ma Xiang, Chen Yu lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and felt a wave of relief wash over him.

He’d never felt such bliss!

A drag from a cigarette in a desperate situation was better than being a living god!

”Want one?” Chen Yu offered a cigarette to Ma Xiang.

Ma Xiang shook his head. ”Brother Yu, you know I don’t smoke.”

”Then your life is missing out on a lot of flavor,” Chen Yu said with a laugh.

Ma Xiang: ”...”

”Let’s go!”

Hoisting his Alloy Long Saber, Chen Yu walked toward the cave entrance. Ma Xiang shouldered the backpack and followed.

After clearing away the camouflage at the entrance, he stepped out of the cave. Seeing the light of the rising sun, his heart settled a little.

Facing the morning sun, the two figures quickly disappeared into the light.

---

”ROAR—!!”

A roar echoed across the wilderness.

On a hillside, two people lay prone on the ground. Chen Yu stared ahead.

Amidst swirling dust, two enormous monsters were attacking three people.

Two men and a woman!

”Brother Yu, it’s Xu Bo’s group,” Ma Xiang whispered, looking ahead.

Chen Yu didn’t reply, his gaze fixed on the two mutant beasts.

They had gray fur and bodies as massive as tigers. They looked like wolves, but were much larger than any ordinary wolf.

”Wilderness Wolves!”

A piece of information surfaced in Chen Yu’s mind.

The Wilderness Wolf was another common type of mutant beast, more ferocious in its attacks than a Hyenadon.

At the same level, a Wilderness Wolf was slightly stronger than a Hyenadon.

Two Wilderness Wolves were besieging Xu Bo’s group of three. Only one of them had a weapon, and they were struggling to fight back.

”Brother Yu, let’s leave while they’re keeping the Wilderness Wolves busy,” Ma Xiang whispered.

”Since we’ve run into them, let’s take care of it,” Chen Yu said, tightening his grip on the Alloy Long Saber.

Ma Xiang stared at him in disbelief.

”They’re the ones who abandoned you yesterday, and now you’re going to help them? Brother Yu, are you really that big-hearted?”

Ma Xiang couldn’t help but complain.

Chen Yu smiled faintly.

”We’re all from Crane City, and we’ve fought side-by-side before. Let’s not say things that undermine our unity. You wait here, I’ll be right back.”

SWOOSH—!

The moment the words left his mouth, Chen Yu dashed forward, Alloy Long Saber in hand, and charged.

He couldn’t pass up this chance to increase his Source of Life. Against two Wilderness Wolves, especially with a weapon, he was very confident.

He couldn’t be bothered with what Ma Xiang thought. Every little bit he could gain mattered.

’If I save them and they die, so be it. But if they live, they can be human shields. If we run into a large group of mutant beasts, it’s good to have a few extra ’meat shields’.’

’Did falling unconscious... fry his brain?’

Watching Chen Yu charge forward, Ma Xiang was left speechless.

”Let’s do this!”

Gritting his teeth, Ma Xiang tightened his grip on his wooden club and charged in after him.
