Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 671: Chapter 399: Storytime_2

Other than that, Tom was somewhat stunned; he had never interacted with important figures and had no idea what to do at that moment.

But the effect Lance wanted was not yet achieved, so he simply sat down on the grass, appearing very casual in front of these children.

”Come on! Everyone come here and sit down.” Lance gestured to Mary, and the child smartly sat down beside him.

He did not display the usual authority towards these children but became much gentler.

Tom was pretty nervous at first, but quickly relaxed under Lance’s guidance.

”Tom, can you tell us about what happened at that time?” Lance began to reveal his real intentions once Tom sat down.

”Aren’t you afraid of wolves?”

”I am, but I’m even more afraid...”

With Lance’s prompting, Tom began to recount the events, subtly guided by Lance’s design, and the other children were quickly drawn into the roller-coaster story.

This was a stage play; Lance was the director, and naturally, Tom was the protagonist, with the curious children gathered around as the audience.

He was using this performance to teach the children a lesson about ”bravery” and ”protection.”

Education is not about hitting, yelling, or forcing them to conform, making them docile.

It’s about making them understand, making them feel the difference between good and evil, right and wrong.

Even modern people struggle with this, and Lance’s approach was out of desperation, for the adults no longer held much potential for change; Hamlet’s hopes lay with these children.

Tom’s story could actually be told in a single sentence, but Lance deliberately made it very grand, constantly infusing his own ideas until the end...

”Tom, your bravery saved your sister and touched me. I will take you to town.”

Lance filled in the most important part of the story’s ending.

That is the reward the protagonist receives after overcoming a formidable enemy, creating a stark and intense contrast with the previous hardships, directly bringing the story to its climax.

Grendel had actually laid the groundwork for related rumors earlier, and they were finally perfectly interpreted at this moment.

Tom, immersed in the envious gazes of those around him, didn’t know what to say; he only knew he had been chosen by the Lord.

Even though Lance was right there, he somehow stood apart from their emotions, like a narrator.

Another fortunate one... This will bring profound memories to his childhood.

Before this moment, Tom himself didn’t even understand what his actions had to do with so-called bravery and protection.

But now he even felt the scars on his chest growing hot, no longer ugly but resembling a badge of honor.

Tom’s rising emotions faintly triggered the awakening of Supernatural Power within him. Lance, noticing this, immediately spoke up.

”Bravery is like a strong drink; the fiery taste upon entry isn’t much, but one must withstand the lingering aftertaste to be called a fine liquor.”

Lance threw out a phrase that was difficult for the children to understand, seizing the opportunity to interrupt the restless atmosphere, and then he slowly explained.

”Like those soldiers who charge against the tide, they know their own strength is meager and the enemy is powerful. Yet, to save more lives, they advance resolutely.

True bravery is not a momentary hot-headedness or blind impulsiveness. Instead, it’s the willingness to throw oneself into danger after carefully considering the situation and clearly understanding the consequences.”

Lance used the soldiers to refine the definition of bravery; he couldn’t teach a bunch of mindless fools—that’s not bravery.

This lively lecture was about finished, and Lance immediately prepared to take Tom and Mary back, but halfway there, they encountered a troop of soldiers with urgent expressions.

”My Lord!”

”What’s happened?”

”The patrol team found traces of wolf activity in the forest outside. Judging by the marks left behind, they are very fresh and numerous.”

Wolves?

Upon hearing this, Lance’s expression inevitably turned serious; after all, it had been less than two days since the invasion of the Warwolves.

On the contrary, the two children following him showed no fear at all after hearing about wolves, evidently because the story session had twisted their perception of wolves.

”You two go back and find your mother to prepare; I’ll deal with some things and then come back to fetch you.”

Ultimately, Lance couldn’t let it go; Hamlet could no longer withstand battles of such intensity, even for a short period.

Tom and Mary were not the type of children who didn’t understand the situation; the two little ones obediently went back, while Lance followed the soldiers into the dense woods at the edge of the farm.

”This is where that white wolf was found, My Lord—the one that was previously with you. This is also the direction from which the Barbarian Tribes invaded.”

As the soldier explained, Lance didn’t waste any words and immediately activated ”Bloodhound Tracking.”

Under this ability, his surroundings were instantly reconstructed in his mind through his sense of smell. The traces glowed before his eyes, as if he were in a unique visual mode from a video game.

Even the remnants of Wang Cai’s blood scent from a day ago were present, along with traces likely left the previous night.

”Carry on with the regular patrol, no need to come over,” Lance said as he followed the glowing traces.

Although the soldiers didn’t know what was happening, they still obeyed the order and didn’t investigate these newly appeared marks further, continuing their patrol instead.

Lance went deep into the wilderness forest because he had identified a key issue: the fresh scents were very different from those of the white wolves cultivated by the Fang Tribe.

Although he had his suspicions, he needed to confirm them by seeing for himself.

Maneuvering among the trees, with the help of his ability, Lance soon found his target: a group of grey wolves resting in the shade of the trees.

And the moment he breached their territory, he also startled them awake, for wolves too had sentries.

GRRR.

The low growl didn’t provoke an exaggerated response but instantly roused all the dozing grey wolves, their ears perked up.

These wild-grown grey wolves were full of animalistic instincts and had a strong notion of territory. When facing an invader, they wouldn’t flee even from a terrifying creature like a Savage Bear but would opt to fight to defend their land.

”It looks like they came looking for you~”

Indeed, these grey wolves were tainted with Wang Cai’s scent, and the smell of his blood was also present, which puzzled Lance.

He had initially thought Wang Cai’s severe injuries were caused by the white wolves of the Fang Tribe, so what role did these grey wolves, clearly from the nearby wilderness, play?

As Lance spoke, Wang Cai’s form emerged from the Void, looking at his former companions in front of him, conveying an indescribable emotion to Lance.

”So it was you, kid, who had such a blast outside.”

He soon had a rough understanding of what was going on. More than thirty had run off, leaving only these five. Without the powerful leadership of the Wolf King, they would soon follow the laws of nature.

These must be the ones following the scent to find Wang Cai, their leader; the others had probably scattered into the wilderness.

”You go. Let’s see if they still recognize you as the Wolf King.”

No sooner had he spoken than Wang Cai’s ethereal form solidified step by step, appearing in front of the group of wild wolves as if crossing the Void.

They couldn’t smell him, but their wolf eyes instantly locked onto the ghostly figure.

These wild wolves were not so rational; they were just ordinary wolves and certainly couldn’t comprehend what this was.

Most of them relied on their sense of smell to differentiate one another. Thus, they couldn’t detect Wang Cai’s form, which was constructed from Spiritual Essence. They could only smell a human. Consequently, these wild wolves were more inclined to view Wang Cai as an enemy.

Their reaction undoubtedly made Wang Cai a little angry; these fellows actually failed to recognize him and even adopted an attack formation reserved for intruders, starting to approach.
