Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”Different how,” said Sean.

”Happy,” said Danny. Simply. The word containing everything he needed it to contain without elaboration. ”Not managing-things happy. Not holding-it-together happy. Actually happy. The kind she doesn’t perform.” He paused. ”I know every version of her. I’ve been watching her my whole life. After our parents died she went into a mode. Competent. Organized. Effective. She ran the building and took care of everything and she was fine in all the ways that look like fine from the outside.” He looked at his glass. ”But she wasn’t happy. Not for a long time.”

Sean said nothing. Just listened.

”These past weeks,” said Danny. ”She smiles differently. She moves differently. She called me last week just to talk. Not about the building. Not about anything practical. Just to talk.” He met Sean’s eyes. ”She hasn’t done that in about four years.”

The drinks arrived. The appetizer followed quickly after. Danny ate without really noticing how good it was, which told Sean he was too focused on the conversation to pay attention to the food.

”When I came to the apartment that evening,” said Danny. ”With the food. I wasn’t just coming to thank you for the debt.” He paused. ”I was coming to see what you were. In person. Not from Makima’s descriptions. Actual you.”

”What did you find out,” said Sean.

”That you chop vegetables without being asked and don’t make it weird,” said Danny. ”My exact words to Makima afterward.”

”She told me that too,” said Sean.

Danny smiled briefly despite himself. ”She tells you everything apparently.” He put his fork down. ”I need to ask you something directly and I need you to answer me straight. Not careful. Not managed.”

”Okay,” said Sean.

”Are you serious about her,” said Danny. ”Not right now serious. Not this is comfortable and convenient serious. Serious serious.”

The steaks arrived. The waiter placed everything precisely and disappeared without disrupting anything.

Sean looked at Danny.

”Yes,” he said.

Danny waited. His expression said he could tell more was coming and he was smart enough to let it arrive without rushing it.

”She’s the most capable person I’ve ever met,” said Sean. ”Not in a cold way. In the way that means she built something real out of something hard and she did it without asking anyone to notice.” He paused. ”She brought me soup when I had a fever before any of this started. Before the money. Before any of it. She was just kind because that’s who she is when nobody’s watching.”

Danny said nothing. Just listened.

”She runs that building the way your father built it,” said Sean. ”With everything she has. And she carries it alone because she decided a long time ago that needing people was a risk she couldn’t afford.” He held Danny’s gaze. ”The first time she let herself need me for something, even just to sit in her office and listen, I understood that meant something specific coming from her. She doesn’t do that easily.”

”No,” said Danny quietly. ”She doesn’t.”

”She’s honest,” said Sean. ”Not brutally honest. Not honest as an excuse for saying difficult things. Honest in the way that means she will always tell you what’s true even when the easier version is available.” He paused. ”I trust everything she says. That’s rarer than people think.”

Danny held his gaze steadily.

”She laughs like she’s surprised by it,” said Sean. ”Like it arrives before she decides to let it. I’ve been paying attention to that specifically since the first time I heard it.” He paused. ”And she loves you in a way that tells me everything about who she actually is. The way she talks about your father. The way she managed three months of invisible pressure because she didn’t want the building he built to stop existing.” He looked at Danny directly. ”Someone who loves like that is worth being serious about. So yes. I’m serious about her.”

Danny looked at his plate for a moment. Then he looked up and his expression had moved through several things and arrived somewhere clear and unguarded, the clearest version of it Sean had seen all evening.

”Okay,” said Danny quietly.

”Okay,” said Sean.

A pause that had nothing pressured in it.

”She picks people based on how they make her feel when they’re not trying to make her feel anything,” said Danny. ”She told me that once. Years ago. When I asked her why she’d ended something with someone who seemed fine on paper.” He looked at his steak. ”I’ve been thinking about that ever since you walked into her building.” He looked up. ”You make her feel something when you’re not trying to.”

”I’m not trying to,” said Sean.

”I know,” said Danny. ”That’s the point.”

He picked up his fork. Ate properly now, the conversation having landed where it needed to, nothing left suspended between them.

”Take care of her,I can finally leave my sister in your capable hands because I can see in your eyes how much you love her,” said Danny. Very simply. The words a younger brother needed to say to someone and had finally found the right person to say them to.

”Always,” said Sean.

Danny nodded once. Something released in his posture, the specific release of something held for a long time that didn’t need to be held anymore. He ate with the focused appreciation of someone who had said everything he came to say and could finally actually taste the food in front of him.

”This is incredible by the way,” said Danny. Looking at the steak properly for the first time.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”I want to be angry about how good this is,” said Danny. ”Because now every steak I eat for the rest of my life is going to be a disappointment.”

”That’s the cost of quality,” said Sean.

”That’s a very calm way to ruin steaks for someone,” said Danny.

”Order another one,” said Sean.

”I’m not ordering another one,” said Danny.
