Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Sean looked at her across the breakfast table.

Morning sunlight reflected softly from the pendant resting against her collarbone.

Her hair was still damp from the bath.

She looked completely at peace.

For a brief moment, Sean thought about everything he still hadn’t told her.

The system.

His second chance at life.

The future he remembered.

The future he intended to change.

He pushed those thoughts aside.

”Good okay,” Sean asked, ”or just okay?”

Olivia smiled.

”The best kind.”

”The kind that makes you feel like everything is exactly where it’s supposed to be.”

Sean smiled back.

”I’m glad.”

She picked up her champagne flute.

”To twelve impossible days finally being over.”

Sean lifted his own glass.

”To twelve impossible days.”

Their glasses touched with a soft chime.

They each took a sip.

Olivia looked thoughtfully at the champagne before turning back toward him.

”You know...”

Sean looked up.

”Hm?”

”One day you’re going to have to explain how you plan things this well.”

Sean smiled.

”What brought this on?”

She gestured around the room.

”The showcase.”

”Dinner.”

”The movie.”

”The hotel.”

She smiled.

”And breakfast ”

She tilted her head.

”These aren’t things most eighteen-year-olds think about.”

Sean laughed quietly.

”I’ve had an unusual few weeks.”

Olivia pointed at him.

”That’s becoming your standard answer.”

”Because it keeps being true.”

She studied him for another moment.

She could tell there was more behind those words.

There almost always was.

But instead of pressing him, she simply smiled and took another bite of her croissant.

”I’ll let you keep that answer.”

Sean returned the smile.

It was one of the things he admired most about her.

She always seemed to know the difference between someone hiding something...

...and someone simply needing a little more time before they were ready to share it.

Outside, the city continued its busy morning.

Inside, breakfast stretched on a little longer, neither of them in any hurry for the day to begin.

=============

They were still at the breakfast table, the champagne mostly finished, the conversation drifted into the easy territory of people who had stopped needing to fill silence with anything deliberate, when both their phones buzzed at almost the exact same moment.

The kind of coincidence that didn’t feel like coincidence.

Sean looked at his screen. Max.

He picked up. ”Max.”

”Sean.” Max’s voice was different from his usual flat efficiency. Tighter. ”The hospital called. Amara’s surgery is today. They moved the date up, something about the surgical team’s schedule opening early. I’m heading there now.” A pause. ”I know you said you were busy this weekend. I just thought you should know.”

”I’ll be there,” said Sean.

”You don’t have to—”

”I’ll be there,” said Sean. ”Give me an hour.”

He hung up and looked across the table.

Olivia was still on her own call, her back slightly turned, and he caught the end of it before she hung up.

”Yes, Kwon. I understand. An hour.” She paused. ”Yes I know what time it is. I’ll be there.”

She ended the call and turned back to Sean.

They looked at each other across the breakfast table with the particular expression of two people who had just arrived at the same conclusion simultaneously without discussing it.

”Kwon,” said Olivia.

”Max,” said Sean.

”His sister,” said Olivia.

”Your rehearsal,” said Sean.

A brief silence.

”Timing,” said Olivia.

”Yeah,” said Sean.

She looked at him for a moment, something shifting in her expression, the warm easy morning quality giving way to something more grounded. ”Is she okay? His sister.”

”Surgery’s today,” said Sean. ”They moved it up. He’s heading to the hospital now.”

Olivia nodded slowly. ”You should go.”

”You should too,” said Sean.

Neither of them moved immediately. The city was fully awake outside the windows, the morning having made its decision about what kind of day it wanted to be while they weren’t paying attention.

Olivia stood first and crossed to where Sean was sitting and put her arms around him from behind, her chin on top of his head, a hug that was quiet and entirely genuine.

”This was the best date I’ve ever been on,” she said.

Sean put his hands over hers. ”Me too.”

”Even with the accountant’s eyebrows,” she said.

”Especially because of the accountant’s eyebrows,” said Sean.

She laughed softly against his hair. Then she straightened and he stood, and they faced each other in the morning light of a penthouse suite above a city that had been doing its thing throughout all of it.

He pulled her in properly this time, his arms around her, her face against his shoulder, the necklace pressing lightly between them.

”Thursday,” she said quietly, into his shirt.

”Thursday,” he confirmed.

She pulled back just enough to look at him, her green eyes steady and warm, and kissed him once, unhurried and deliberate, the kind of kiss that said everything the morning had said without needing to repeat any of it.

”Go be with your friend,” she said softly.

”Go run your formations,” said Sean.

She pressed her lips together, trying not to smile. ”I hate that you know me that well already.”

”No you don’t,” said Sean.

”No,” she agreed. ”I really don’t.”

They got dressed and when they rode the elevator down together she was in last night’s dress with the necklace still at her throat and her red hair pulled back simply and she looked exactly like someone who had just had the kind of night that was worth looking like you’d had.

James already had the Rolls-Royce waiting at the curb by the time they stepped out of the hotel.

The morning air was cool, carrying the quiet energy of a city settling into another busy day.

As always, James stepped forward and opened the rear door without a word.

His expression remained perfectly professional, though the faint smile in his eyes suggested he had noticed far more than he would ever comment on.

Sean held the door open for Olivia.
