American Football: King of the Bay Area

The rules of an NFL game are perhaps the most complex in the world of sports—if not, they’re at least in the running. Sometimes, even the League’s official referees have to consult the rulebook on the field to confirm the details before making an accurate call.

The rules regarding a successful catch and the subsequent advance are full of special conditions.

One such rule states that if a ball carrier’s knees touch the ground, but no opposing player has touched him, the football is still live. The play is not dead and can continue.

For example, imagine Lu Ke is in the pocket, preparing to pass. The pocket collapses, and an opponent tries for a sack. Instead of giving up on the play, Lu Ke uses his feet to dodge the tackle but accidentally falls. If the defender never touched him, Lu Ke can get back up and still complete the pass.

That would be a legal pass.

The same principle applied to Vernon’s play just now.

When he completed the catch, the opposing defender hadn’t touched him, so the ball wasn’t dead. Thus, Vernon got back to his feet and continued his run.

Afterward, Vernon lost his balance and fell out of bounds, which made the ball dead and ended the advance. Alternatively, if a defender had managed to tackle him and force his knees to the ground, that would have also made the ball dead and stopped his progress.

However, this particular rule is rarely invoked on the field, as the circumstances are incredibly specific. Some players don’t even know it exists, or in the tense atmosphere of a game, they forget about it and simply give up on the play after their knees touch the ground.

Occasionally, you can see a scenario in a game where a player makes a catch and falls down on his own. A defender doesn’t need to tackle or hit him, but will still run over without slowing down and give the player a light tap.

That gesture isn’t to comfort or pay respect to the opponent—it’s to ensure the play is officially dead.

…

Lu Ke stood in the pocket and straightened up, quickly glancing left and right. He was a little unsure of the situation on the field when Hubble’s voice suddenly reached him. “Snap the ball! Bambi, snap the ball!”

The voice was incredibly rushed, almost anxious. Lu Ke didn’t understand. He turned to face Hubble on the left sideline and pointed toward the referee. His gesture was clear without any words: ‘Didn’t the ref just stop the play?’

But Hubble had no time to explain. He just kept yelling, “Snap the ball!” while running a short way down the sideline, making exaggerated gestures. He kept winding his arm in a big circle, signaling to keep the play going, to keep advancing.

The sight was not only utterly confusing to Lu Ke, but also quite comical. Still, he didn’t press for an answer. He turned and signaled for his offensive teammates to get ready for the snap, but it was too late.

“Time out.” First came a whistle, then the announcement over the stadium’s PA system. The referee officially declared a stop in play. “The New York Giants have challenged the previous play. The play is now under official review.”

Only then did Lu Ke realize what was going on.

He turned his head to the right and saw the New York Giants’ head coach, Tom Coughlin, throwing his red flag to officially challenge the referee’s last call.

In football, there are two important flags: yellow and red. A yellow flag signifies a penalty, resulting in a loss of yardage. A red flag signifies a challenge, used by a head coach to contest a referee’s ruling.

However, the use of the red flag is time-sensitive. A head coach can’t just challenge any call at any time. The challenge must be made in the brief window after a play ends and before the next one begins.

Because the window to make a decision is so short and the risk is so high—a failed challenge results in the loss of a timeout for that half—head coaches often can’t make a fully rational judgment and must rely on their instincts.

Sometimes, a single red flag challenge can cost them the game. Other times, a moment of hesitation causes them to miss an opportunity to overturn a bad call, leaving them full of regret after the final whistle.

In other words, if Lu Ke had snapped the ball immediately, the next play would have started, and Coughlin would have lost his chance to challenge the call. The game would have simply continued, which was why Hubble had been signaling so frantically. But Lu Ke didn’t grasp the subtlety of the situation and missed the window, giving Coughlin just enough time to think and throw his challenge flag.

At that moment, Lu Ke’s greatest weakness was laid bare: his lack of game experience.

This was the first time in his professional career that Lu Ke had ever encountered a red flag challenge. He hadn’t realized the call was controversial, nor did he understand why Coughlin was arguing with the referee. And just like that, the opportunity was lost.

In the middle of the game, Lu Ke, who had seemed so resourceful and like a master strategist, was finally exposed for what he was: a rookie, through and through. A veteran quarterback, even if he’d missed the opportunity initially, would have immediately snapped the ball upon seeing his coach’s signal. But there are no ‘what-ifs’ in football.

Once he realized his mistake, Lu Ke couldn’t help but let out a wry laugh as a wave of absurdity washed over him.

…

“A challenge flag! The veteran coach of the New York Giants, Tom Coughlin, has thrown the red flag. Clearly, Lu Ke missed his chance to quick-snap the ball, giving his opponent the opportunity to challenge. Hubble is on the sideline with his head in his hands in frustration. Now we can finally say for certain: he really is a rookie quarterback.”

Even though there was a challenge on the field, Teddy’s tone was light and relaxed as he gently poked fun at Lu Ke. “We’re ten weeks into the regular season, and moments like this are a rare treat.”

“Today’s game has been absolutely brilliant. We’re not even four minutes in, and we’ve already seen them go for it on fourth-and-three, and now we’re facing a challenge flag. This opening has been a roller coaster of unexpected twists,” Teddy said. After his joke, he got back to the game. “Kirk, what are your thoughts on Coughlin’s challenge?”

“The point of contention is whether Prince Amukamara actually touched Vernon Davis in that brief moment after he made the catch, his knees hit the ground, and he got back up. The ruling on the field was that there was no contact, which made Davis’s continued advance legal.”

Kirk briefly explained the challenged call to the audience as the slow-motion replay began. He used the yellow telestrator to circle the key area on the screen. “This… is really ambiguous. From this angle, it looks like there was no contact, but that could just be the camera’s perspective. We need to see footage from another angle to be sure.”

However, the broadcast director seemed to be having some issues, as they kept replaying the same clip over and over. Kirk and Teddy watched it carefully two or three times but still couldn’t come to a clear conclusion.

Teddy, being more experienced, decided to move on from the replay. “Kirk, in your personal opinion, do you think Coughlin’s challenge was an impulsive move, or is he confident he’ll win it?”

“I think that’s an interesting angle,” Kirk said, nodding in agreement. “That last play happened on the right side of the field, right under the noses of the New York Giants’ players and coaches. It’s possible they had a clearer view. After a brief argument, Coughlin decided to challenge.”

“Of course, even if he loses, the Giants only lose a timeout. Since it’s just the first half, the risk isn’t that high. So Coughlin could afford to be a little bolder.” After his analysis, Kirk still refrained from giving a definitive conclusion. “In the end, it’s a judgment call. We’ll have to let the referees decide.”

…

In NFL games, there are quite a few situations that require a video replay.

Besides coaches’ challenges, referees sometimes need to huddle together to watch a replay to make an accurate call. Later, to avoid missed calls, the League introduced a new rule: within the last two minutes of both the first and second halves, all touchdowns must be automatically reviewed to ensure they are legal.

For this purpose, a small black tent is set up on the sideline of every game, jokingly called the “little black box.” The referees would all duck inside this tent to watch the replay and communicate with the broadcast crew at NFL headquarters. They would review the play from multiple angles and perspectives to ensure the final ruling was as fair as possible.

Incidentally, in 2017, the League changed the rule, hoping to make the replay review process more transparent. They did away with the “little black box.” In its place, a staff member now stands on the field holding a tablet, and the referees crowd around it to watch the replay.

It was certainly more transparent, but it lacked any sense of gravity or decorum, giving it a comical and somewhat cheap-looking air that was mocked by countless commentators.

Right now, all the referees were gathered in the “little black box” on the sideline, watching the replay over and over.

The review was taking a while. Lu Ke and his offensive teammates stood on the sideline, drinking water and resting. At the same time, Lu Ke was discussing tactics with the offensive coaches.

The moment he got to the sideline, Lu Ke became the target of everyone’s jokes for missing the snap and allowing the other team to get their challenge in.

Vernon was the first one to come over, putting on a fierce look. “If this play gets called back, it’s all on you.” But the laughter in his eyes betrayed his true feelings.

Lu Ke looked stunned. “You sure it’s not because of you? Aren’t you the one who fell down in the first place?” But this time, all the other players said in unison, “Nope, it’s you.”

It wasn’t just the players; even the coaches burst out laughing.

Ordinarily, a challenge flag that threatened to negate Vernon’s spectacular run could have disrupted the San Francisco 49ers’ budding offensive rhythm, which would have been a bad thing. But now, amidst all the laughter, the team had actually relaxed and didn’t seem too affected.

It was just a pity for Lu Ke. This incident would probably stick with him for a long time.

“Red Flag Boy,” Marcus quipped.
