American Football: King of the Bay Area

“Welcome, viewers, to today’s ‘Inside the Alliance.’ This is ESPN, and I’m your host, Edward Bowen.”

In the bustling studio, the din vanished the moment the green “On Air” light flashed on. All eyes turned toward the camera. The analysts were ready, and as the host, Edward Bowen smiled at the camera, expertly delivering the day’s opening. A spirited gleam began to brighten his eyes.

“Just like that, the 2011 season is already halfway over. This week, Week 10 of the regular season is about to kick off, and the playoff race has officially entered its latter half. Clearly, every game each week is crucial for every team vying for a playoff spot. The level of excitement in these matchups is bound to rise, which is undoubtedly great news for the fans.”

This simple summary set the tone for the day’s program.

Edward turned his head, and the camera panned with his gaze toward the ten analysts on set. “This week’s games are packed with countless storylines. The three primetime matchups are, as always, highly anticipated, but Sunday’s day games clearly have plenty to watch for as well. Charles, which game has your attention most this week?”

Charles Davis was “Inside the Alliance’s” biggest lightning rod for controversy, a veritable headline-generating machine. His explosive remarks on every episode were the show’s greatest weapon for driving up ratings.

Over the last few weeks, however, Charles had been noticeably subdued, practically falling off the radar.

In the first half of the season, Charles’s constant criticism and nitpicking of the San Francisco 49ers’ rookie quarterback had backfired spectacularly. Aside from the Philadelphia Eagles’ narrow victory in Week 4, Lu Ke had used his unparalleled performance to successfully make a name for himself in the Alliance, which left Charles in an incredibly awkward position.

Before the regular season, when the San Francisco 49ers officially named Lu Ke their starting quarterback, Charles had launched into a vicious tirade on an episode of “Inside the Alliance,” humiliating Lu Ke and even bordering on racism. That video clip had been replayed over and over on YouTube, its view count surging past a staggering five million.

For Charles, it was torture by a thousand cuts. So, gradually, he had started to keep his mouth shut, biding his time and waiting for a better opportunity to strike back.

Now, his opportunity had arrived. “The San Francisco 49ers versus the New York Giants.” Charles’s answer caused a stir in the studio, and everyone stared at him in astonishment.

Ever since the San Francisco 49ers had won their tough road game against the Detroit Lions, Charles had refused to discuss the team on the show for three straight weeks. Everyone knew that for Charles, the 49ers’ dominant run, and especially Lu Ke’s stellar performance, was a personal humiliation.

So what was going on today? Why was Charles willingly walking right into the line of fire?

Amid the commotion, Charles remained calm and composed. He spread his hands, that look of cool confidence returning to his face. “Yes, of all the games this week, this is the one I’m most focused on.”

Edward could feel the other analysts getting restless, each one of them itching to jump in and engage with Charles. The soundbites and headlines were already brewing. But as the host, he seized the moment, cutting in first. “Oh? And why is that?”

Edward posed the question on everyone’s mind, subtly starting to build the tension. “There are quite a few matchups worth watching this week. For starters, the three primetime games are all can’t-miss divisional rivalry games.

“Especially the Monday night game, with the Green Bay Packers hosting the Minnesota Vikings. Just three weeks ago, the Vikings nearly snapped the Packers’ undefeated streak at their home stadium. Now, in this rematch on new turf, there’s bound to be some serious bad blood between the two teams.”

Just as Edward said, all three of this week’s primetime games were packed with storylines.

The Thursday night game featured an AFC West showdown between the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Lightning. Both teams were currently 4-4, as were the Kansas City Chiefs, while the Denver Broncos were 3-5. The divisional race was heating up, and the intensity of these intradivisional matchups—which could truly alter a team’s playoff destiny—was skyrocketing.

The Sunday night game was the New England Patriots against the New York Jets. Both teams had a 5-3 record, making the fight for the top of the division incredibly fierce. What’s more, these two teams were historic arch-rivals; playoffs or not, neither would give the other an easy time.

And with the addition of the Monday night game, you had some of the most compelling divisional derbies in the entire Alliance.

Without a doubt, every single one of those games was guaranteed to be explosive. You could already anticipate the sheer excitement.

And yet, out of all those options, Charles had specifically chosen the showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants.

Objectively speaking, the 49ers and the Giants were indeed major rivals.

First, the clash between the cities of New York and San Francisco could be seen as a proxy battle between the East Coast and the West Coast. Since Los Angeles currently had no professional football team, the rivalry between the East and West Coasts of North America was an all-encompassing, full-blown affair. This ensured that sparks always flew whenever these two teams met.

Second, the history between the two teams was also quite fascinating. In the 49ers’ franchise history, the Giants were their most frequent playoff opponent, having faced them a total of six times.

In their first two playoff meetings, both teams were in their ascendancy. Joe Montana led his team to victory on both occasions, and both times, they went on to win the Super Bowl. In the next three playoff clashes, however, it was the New York Giants who had the last laugh, and they too won the Super Bowl after the first two of those victories.

This included the epic showdown in 1990. At the time, the San Francisco 49ers had just won the Super Bowl in both 1988 and 1989 and were chasing the first three-peat in history.

In the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers led for the entire game and held their advantage until the final moments, when an unexpected fumble by Roger Craig gave the New York Giants an offensive possession. The Giants capitalized on the opportunity, kicked a field goal, and defeated the 49ers 15-13, advancing to the Super Bowl, which they went on to win.

Later, in the first round of the 2002 playoffs—which was also the San Francisco 49ers’ last playoff appearance of the new millennium—the New York Giants held a massive 38-14 lead late into the third quarter. But the 49ers ultimately staged an incredible comeback, defeating their rivals 39-38 to advance to the second round.

Currently, the all-time head-to-head record between the two teams, including regular season games, is tied. Their playoff record is also tied. They are, in the truest sense, perfectly matched.

Still, that was all eight years ago. With the 49ers’ decline and the Giants’ rise, the two teams had walked different paths, and their last two meetings had been lackluster. This year, from the perspective of media hype, potential for explosive plays, and the matchup itself, this game simply couldn’t compare to the three primetime contests.

“I know, of course, I know,” Charles said calmly. “But have you all noticed that of the five teams with the best records in the Alliance right now, four of them are from the NFC? The Packers, 49ers, Giants, and Lions. This means they aren’t just fighting for playoff spots; they’re essentially getting a preview of potential playoff matchups.”

Charles swept his gaze across the other analysts in the studio, a long-lost spark of vigor returning to his eyes. “In other words, the intensity and significance of this matchup between the 49ers and the Giants are on another level. The excitement is something to look forward to.”

That was a fact.

Just as Charles said, even without the built-in hype of a divisional rivalry, the matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants was easily in the top three for intensity this week. And if you looked purely at their records, the 7-1 49ers versus the 6-2 Giants was the week’s highest-ranked and most closely matched game.

It was comparable to their Week 6 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

This was all information everyone already knew. It was definitely not the answer Edward was looking for.

“So, which team do you think will come out on top?” Spencer Larson interjected with a smile, posing a pointed question.

The other analysts simply smiled, their expressions showing they were ready for a good show. ‘Spencer vs. Charles. Was the battle about to be reignited?’

“The New York Giants.” No hesitation. No pause. Charles’s answer was crisp and decisive, so forceful it was as if a gauntlet had been thrown down.

Indeed, the battle was reignited!

“What I’m more curious about is whether you reached that conclusion by comparing their strengths, or is it based on your personal doubts about Lu Ke?” Spencer, not at all surprised by Charles’s answer, continued to press forward methodically.

Charles was no fool; he could clearly hear the trap in Spencer’s words, but he didn’t care. At this point, everyone knew his previous statements about Lu Ke. Even if he changed his tune now, nobody would believe him. So why not just stick to his guns and see it through to the very end?

“I have never believed that Lu Ke has what it takes to be a great quarterback,” Charles stated bluntly. The sharp antagonism, dormant for weeks, was beginning to rear its head once more.

It wasn’t just Spencer; the other analysts also had looks of wry amusement, clearly not expecting Charles to tell such a bald-faced lie.

It’s one thing to dislike a quarterback—that’s a matter of personal preference. Simply put, nobody likes the quarterback of their divisional arch-rival; they might even wish for him to fail spectacularly.

But for a commentator, you can’t just deny a quarterback’s stats and accomplishments. You have to analyze from a relatively objective viewpoint and then layer your personal opinions on top of that. That’s perfectly fine.

But that was clearly not what Charles was doing…

“Good God,” Spencer exclaimed. “Have you not seen Lu Ke’s quarterback rating?”

But before he could finish, Charles lifted his hand and slammed it down hard on the tabletop. BANG! The loud sound echoed through the studio, stunning everyone into silence.

The frustration that had been bottled up inside him for four long weeks finally erupted. Charles’s eyes were bloodshot as he glared at Spencer. “Don’t talk to me about quarterback rating! Everyone knows it’s a controversial stat. Its favorite quarterback will always be Aaron Rodgers, while a mobile quarterback like Michael Vick could never get any love from it.”

“At the end of the day, quarterback rating is just a reference number! It has no real value and doesn’t prove that Lu Ke is a great quarterback.” Charles’s anger came pouring out. “It’s only been eight games! Don’t you dare compare him to Kurt Warner. That’s an insult to Warner.”

Without pausing, Charles continued, “So, yes. I do not believe the San Francisco 49ers can win their game this week.”
