American Football: King of the Bay Area

Time flies. Once the regular season started, time always seemed to move at an incredible speed. Wednesday’s official media day felt like it was just yesterday. Lu Ke had become the focus of every reporter swarming and cornering him, but they all left empty-handed, unable to dig up any scoops. Their disappointed and frustrated expressions were still vivid. In the blink of an eye, game day was here again.

On October 9th, at 1:05 PM Pacific Time, the San Francisco 49ers’ home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was set to kick off at Candlestick Park.

The team bus drove slowly and steadily toward the stadium. The players followed their own routines, getting into the right mindset for the game. Inevitably, a tense atmosphere began to fill the air. It had nothing to do with the loss in the previous game—it was like this before every match. The more desperate the desire for victory, the thicker the tension became.

”Logan, sorry, just one more question, I promise...” Mike Lupati whispered, patting Logan on the shoulder. He gestured toward Lu Ke by the window, a look of apology on his face. Just as Lu Ke turned his head toward them, Rupati hurriedly asked, ”We were just saying, if his fingers make *this* gesture, it’s an inside blitz. But what was the signal for run defense again?”

Ever since their meeting on Tuesday, a wave of playbook study had swept through the offense. They analyzed the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the three games before that, and then the Pirate Team’s last two games. They were getting to know their opponents better, but their minds were becoming crammed with increasingly complex tactical variations. There was only so much space in one’s head, and it only took a moment’s carelessness to get muddled.

Not everyone could get a perfect score on the Fonderick test.

”Mike, Mike!” Lu Ke interjected, stopping Rupati and signaling for him to lower his hands. ”During a game, forget about whether we even have time to observe that many details. Even if we did, if your attention keeps drifting, your reaction time will slow down. We explained those hand signals just as an aid. If you happen to glimpse one in your peripheral vision, it serves as a reminder. But if you can’t remember, it doesn’t matter. Ultimately, the tactics change on every down.”

During the game, the Offense Line and Defense Line are face to face; both sides can see each other clearly. Before the play starts, the Forward Players on both sides have their own habitual movements—for instance, the way their fingers support their body, subtle changes in hand position, or shifts in their center of gravity and gaze. These habits often inadvertently give away their tactical strategy.

This is one of the reasons why watching game film is so important. Thoroughly understanding and completely reading an opponent can work wonders in the make-or-break moments of a game.

The side effect, however, is getting so bogged down in the minutiae that you can’t see the bigger picture—just like Rupati right now.

Seeing Rupati’s dazed expression, Lu Ke considered it for a moment. ”At the end of the day, the crux of our strategy comes down to Michael Bennett. Use your intuition, read Bennett’s movements and posture, and just lock onto him. That can often lead to unexpected results. If these hand signals are too complicated, it’s better to just forget them.”

Michael Bennett was a Defensive Tackle, one of the undrafted players from 2009.

The reason he went undrafted was his inconsistent performance in college; he couldn’t maintain a steady level of play. After going undrafted, Bennett joined the Seattle Seahawks through a tryout and switched to playing Defensive End. Unfortunately, he was cut a month into the season. He later landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he found his footing and returned to the Defensive Tackle position.

This season, Bennett had once again moved to the Defensive End position and, with his pass-rushing and sack abilities, became a crucial lynchpin in the resurgence of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Defense Team.

In the team’s 4-3 scheme, their strengths are rushing the passer and stopping the run. However, since the team’s other three Defensive Ends are all rookies, and the overall talent at Defensive Tackle is average with no standouts, Bennett is the key. His movements will determine whether the Pirate Team’s defensive focus is on rushing the quarterback or on run defense—

This was also the fifth consecutive week the San Francisco 49ers had faced a team whose run defense was stronger than its pass defense.

Just as the scouting reports from the draft had indicated, Bennett’s in-game performance was somewhat inconsistent. It wasn’t wildly erratic, but it definitely fluctuated. Furthermore, his teammates on the Defense Line were also not consistent enough, which meant the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Defense Team wasn’t actually as formidable as one might imagine.

”Bennett, Bennett, Bennett,” Lu Ke repeated. After seeing Rupati nod in understanding, he added, ”As for everything else, stick to the coach’s plan. We’ll adapt on the field as needed. Just don’t lose focus.”

The coaching staff knew about the rookies’ playbook study sessions. They were highly encouraging and actively engaged in discussions with the players. But the rookies had many limitations in their big-picture view, tactical comprehension, and ability to adapt and improvise. So, at the end of the day, they still needed to follow the coaches’ advice and direction.

Lu Ke never considered himself omniscient. Forget about the Offense Line’s tactics; even with the quarterback’s playbook, he still had a lot to learn.

Rupati didn’t reply, just nodded dazedly, lost in his own thoughts, only half-comprehending. But then his eyes went wide as he stared blankly out the window. Slowly, his mouth fell open, an expression of unconcealable astonishment on his face. Before Lu Ke and Logan could ask what was wrong, a low stir of commotion spread through the bus.

Lu Ke and Logan exchanged a look. They both turned to follow Rupati’s gaze and saw it: a vast ocean of red and gold.

Vast swathes of red surged majestically along the roads of Candlestick Park, winding their way toward the stadium. Flecks of gold, appearing and disappearing, were sprinkled throughout, deftly brightening the boundless crimson and outlining a roiling, boiling current. It was as if one could faintly hear an incessant roar, like standing at the mouth of a waterfall where a river meets the sea—a powerful and majestic sound that echoed endlessly against the eardrums.

Grand. Majestic. Magnificent.

Even more astonishing, from every direction, countless red tides, like trickling streams, flowed ceaselessly to merge with the great river, stirring up Fierce Waves. The green vegetation, the blue sky, and the white buildings in their line of sight slowly dissolved into the boundless red, creating an optical illusion that all other colors were shrinking away. The entire world began to twist and churn.

Unimaginable. Absolutely unimaginable.

This was the San Francisco 49ers’ third home game of the 2011 season, but the sight before them was something Lu Ke had never seen. It wasn’t just Lu Ke; even veteran players like Patrick Willis and Alex Smith were looking on with expressions of shock and awe. They stared, dumbfounded, at the magnificent spectacle, utterly speechless.

This version of Candlestick Park had a power that was simply electrifying!

As the team bus moved slowly forward, the dense crowd, like a tide, gradually parted to either side to open up a path. The scene was irresistibly reminiscent of the biblical story where Moses raised his Magic Staff high, carving a path through the Red Sea before him and leading his people across.

Before them was an ocean of red—a true Red Sea. The team bus, like the Titanic, was massive and sturdy, yet it seemed so small upon this vast ocean as it braved the waves and slowly forged ahead.

”49ers! Hey, 49ers! Go, go!”

”Let’s go, guys! We’re counting on you this week!”

”Go get ’em, boys! Let’s go!”

”Bambi! Bambi! Let’s go! I know you can do it!”

”Destroy the Pirates! Go on, destroy ’em!”

...

The bustling cheers surged from all directions. People enthusiastically slapped the sides of the bus, and the BANG BANG BANG sound began to rock the great vessel, like true Fierce Waves. Excited, ecstatic faces filled every corner of their vision. Boiling passion, soaring spirits, and surging emotions churned throughout Candlestick Park.

Amid the sea of faces, Lu Ke’s eyes caught a slender figure. He was holding a handmade sign high, struggling to weave through the crowd, trying desperately to keep pace with the bus and not fall behind. He kept waving the simple cardboard sign, shouting something, his entire face radiant with pure joy.

Suddenly, the sign came into full view: ”Lu Ke, my hero! Please keep leading the team forward!”

A gentle warmth spread through his chest. But in the next instant, the slender boy vanished into the ocean of red, becoming a single drop in the vast sea. Only the simple handmade sign continued to wave above the crowd, a stubborn and resolute beacon of support.

”WE ARE! WARRIORS!”

”WE ARE! WARRIORS!”

”WE ARE! WARRIORS!”

From outside the windows, an enthusiastic roar grew louder as it approached, drawing the eyes of every player. The stadium’s player tunnel was just ahead. A massive crowd of fans was gathered there, a convergence of red on red that made it impossible to discern their numbers—one could only make out a single, seething mass.

They raised their hands high, fists clenched, and shouted themselves hoarse with terrifying intensity, ”WE ARE! WARRIORS!”

The call and response, back and forth, truly unleashed the fiery blood of a Warrior. The powerful shockwave of sound rolled over them, a true display of iron-willed, unyielding spirit. It sent layer after layer of sound washing over them, echoing endlessly. It seemed as if the ordinary, unremarkable Candlestick Park had been set ablaze, a blazing torch bright enough to illuminate the entire sky and make the afternoon sun itself pale in comparison.

Now *this* was a true home-field advantage!
