American Football: King of the Bay Area

”Coach, can I ask if there will be any changes to the team’s starting quarterback this week?”

”No, there won’t be.”

Jim Hubble’s reply was swift and decisive, leaving no room for misinterpretation. The answer wasn’t unexpected, but its absolute finality left the reporters a little surprised.

After a loss, every team inevitably has to find the reasons, learn from the experience, and then get back on the winning track. In football, the offense, the Defense Team, and the special teams could all be held responsible, but ultimately, the coach and the quarterback are the ones who draw the most fire.

The San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback was an undrafted rookie. Moreover, with a quarterback like Alex Smith available on the team, the undrafted rookie naturally became the prime target for blame.

At the official media day on Wednesday, the reporters’ first question was sharp and pointed. Unexpectedly, Jim didn’t hesitate for a moment, immediately shutting down any possibility.

”The team just suffered a loss last week. Hasn’t the coach considered putting Alex Smith back in as the starter to change up the team’s offensive rhythm?”

”No.” Once again, Jim answered concisely and clearly, without any hesitation.

But this time, looking at the restless crowd of reporters before him, it was clear they weren’t going to let it go. So, Jim added, ”Our offense is running well. Last game’s loss was by a razor-thin margin. As the starting quarterback, Lu Ke’s performance was still outstanding, and I’m confident he’s ready for this week’s challenge.”

Support and trust from the head coach—this was undoubtedly the kind of treatment every starting quarterback dreamed of.

For Jim, who had just taken the helm of the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason, he had no established inner circle, no trusted confidants. Everything started from scratch. That’s why every time he changed the starting quarterback, Jim never hesitated, showing his ruthlessly decisive side. This was true from Alex Smith to Colin Kaepernick, and now to Lu Ke.

Now, after four games of adjustments and finding their rhythm, the West Coast offense Jim championed was gradually taking shape. Lu Ke’s performance wasn’t perfect and had its ups and downs, but it genuinely fit Jim’s tactical designs and concepts. That was why he unhesitatingly cast his vote of confidence for Lu Ke.

The infighting, controversy, doubt, and chaos that the media speculated about never materialized. Although Jim was a coach who wasn’t skilled at managing the locker room, his iron-fisted approach left little room for compromise or retreat. But by the same token, his philosophy was ’if you doubt them, don’t use them; if you use them, don’t doubt them.’ Jim wouldn’t question his own judgment and decisions—

Back in the preseason, Kaepernick’s performance had been a disaster, yet Jim never once thought of replacing his starting quarterback, choosing instead to stick with him to the bitter end. If it hadn’t been for Kaepernick’s concussion, Jim still wouldn’t have changed the starting quarterback after the regular season began, unless things had become truly and utterly hopeless.

And the same was true now.

”Coach, can we take this to mean that you have complete confidence in Lu Ke?”

”Yes, that’s exactly right.” Jim’s answer remained unwavering. The reporters in the room exchanged glances. It seemed pointless to keep pressing the issue of the starting quarterback. It was time for a new question.

”Before the season started, everyone thought the San Francisco 49ers had a relatively easy schedule this year. But since the regular season began, your opponents seem to have taken on a new life, becoming much more competitive. This week’s opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is another example. What are your thoughts on that?”

For the first time, Jim smiled. ”I guess that’s the charm of the NFL. The Pirate Team is a very respectable squad. I watched the tape of their last two games, and honestly, their performance was truly impressive. This week will definitely be a challenge for the 49ers. But we’re ready for it.”

Just as the reporter said, before the season began, the San Francisco 49ers, who finished third in the National League West last year, were thought to have a below-average difficulty schedule. Their opponents had, for the most part, been in poor form in recent years—

Aside from the Philadelphia Eagles, who had a signature season last year, the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Cincinnati Bengals were all far from peak form.

But entering the new season, with the exception of the slumping Seattle Seahawks, the other three teams all showed formidable strength. Their records were all two wins and two losses, and both of their losses were incredibly close games. They were definitely tough nuts to crack.

Everyone was saying the San Francisco 49ers were resurgent, but as it turned out, their opponents were experiencing a powerful resurgence at the same time. Add to that the personnel changes before the regular season and the quarterback injuries, and for the 49ers, who were desperately trying to fight their way back to the playoffs, it was shaping up to be an ill-fated year.

In Week 5 of the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers would host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Located in the National League South, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a very, very young team. Founded in 1974 and entering the Alliance in 1976, they reached their peak in 2002. On the back of a fearsome, hard-hitting defense, they won the only Super Bowl championship in franchise history.

Back then, the Pirate Team’s defense truly embodied an ironclad style. Their ability to create turnovers, along with the scoring prowess of their Defense Team and special teams, reached the absolute pinnacle, comparable to the legendary defenses of the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers, the 1985 Chicago Bears, and the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, earning them a place in the history books.

A quick look at two stats reveals the prowess of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Defense Team.

First, during the regular season, they held opposing quarterbacks to an average passer rating of just 48.4. Out of a perfect 158.3, the average rating for quarterbacks facing this Defense Team over sixteen games was just a pittance.

Second, in their three-game playoff run to the championship, they recorded nine interceptions, four of which were returned for a Touchdown, and also tallied eleven sacks.

Absolute dominance! Truly the pinnacle of performance.

But what goes up must come down. After that peak, in the nine years from 2002 to 2010, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only made the playoffs twice, in 2005 and 2007. The rest of the time, they were one of the weaker teams in their division, their competitiveness falling far short of the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons.

Last year, the Pirate Team had a respectable season, finishing with ten wins and six losses. Unfortunately, their poor record within the division meant they only finished third and narrowly missed the playoffs.

True to their history, the Pirate Team had always been a team whose defense was stronger than its offense. But over the past three years, their defense was a shadow of its former self, becoming fragmented and inconsistent. Weakness in crucial moments often cost them games. Conversely, their perpetually weak offense began to show signs of a revival.

In the nine years following their Super Bowl victory, the Pirate Team had a revolving door at starting quarterback. Not a single quarterback managed to start for a full season, an embarrassing history that finally ended with the arrival of Josh Freeman in 2010.

Josh Freeman, the seventeenth overall pick in the 2009 first round, was a traditional pocket quarterback, though his mobility and ability to run in crucial moments could often create miracles.

During his rookie season, after the Pirate Team suffered eleven straight losses, they finally had enough. Freeman made his first start in a game against the Green Bay Packers. He successfully led the team to a comeback victory, becoming the youngest starting quarterback in Pirate Team history, as well as the youngest quarterback in franchise history to win a game.

Last season, Freeman became the starting quarterback and played the entire season. Although the team narrowly missed the playoffs, Freeman himself had an outstanding performance. He was named the National League’s Offensive Player of the Week for Week 5 and Week 17, and he was also selected as a backup quarterback for the Pro Bowl.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers firmly believed that Josh Freeman was their ace quarterback, the one who could lead them to a second era of glory.

The Pirate Team’s performance after the start of the new season seemed to prove this point. After losing the season opener to the Detroit Lions, they went on to win their next three games, including a victory over their division rival, the Atlanta Falcons. Now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were sitting at the top of the National League South.

Over the past four games, the Pirate Team had shown sufficient toughness on defense, giving up an average of only fifteen points per game. While it was nothing compared to their peak, they were clearly resurgent and ranked among the top of the Alliance.

On offense, Freeman’s performance had started to become inconsistent, with only two Touchdowns in four games. However, the 2010 undrafted running back, Lagarette Blount, had exploded with unbelievable energy, racking up four Touchdowns in four games and running for the game-winning Touchdown two weeks in a row.

The current Tampa Bay Buccaneers had grown into an opponent that no team in the National League could afford to underestimate.

Last year, both the 49ers and the Pirate Team finished third in their respective divisions, and according to the schedule, the two teams were set to play each other this season. This year, after four weeks of the regular season, both the 49ers and the Pirate Team were sitting in first place in their divisions.

This was what prompted the reporter’s earlier question. For the San Francisco 49ers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might be the toughest nut to crack so far. Although both teams had been weak in recent years, this year they were both showing signs of a resurgence, making this a clash of titans in a sense.

”Yes, we just came off a loss, which is a necessary part of the process for young players. Now, we can put that behind us, focus on this week’s game, and embrace a fresh start. The season is long, and no opponent can be underestimated. The Pirate Team is our target right now, but victory is still what we’re striving for. We will give it our all.”
