Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

Light from stars long dead still reached across the black, arriving now at eyes that would never know the fire that made it, traveling farther than memory could hold meaning for. Some of those stars had burned out a thousand years before humanity ever looked up and gave them names. Their light kept moving anyway, patient, indifferent, arriving on schedule long after the source had gone quiet.

Ahead of Storm’s slow, drifting glide, a nebula stretched wide across the dark, violet bleeding soft into rose along its outer edge, threaded through with darker veins where dust swallowed the light whole and gave nothing back. Distant stars caught within its folds seemed to strobe faintly as debris drifted slow across the line of sight, flickering in and out like something breathing, some vast and ancient lung expanding and contracting across a scale no single lifetime could ever properly measure.

Storm’s wings barely moved now, more coast than flight, conserving what little reserve remained after days without proper rest, carrying them both through the hush of it all at a pace that made the whole galaxy feel patient rather than empty.

Noah lay back against his neck, one arm draped loose over a raised ridge of scale, watching the slow scroll of light and dust pass without fully seeing any of it, his mind caught somewhere else entirely.

”A calamity,” he said quietly, the word settling into the silence around him without any weight to carry it forward. ”The very juxtaposition to a sovereign.”

He turned it over slowly.

A walking contradiction. That’s what he was, in every sense that actually mattered. Lineage said one thing. Every single action he’d ever taken said the opposite. And somewhere in the gap between those two facts, an actual answer was supposed to exist, except nobody, not the system, not the mystery woman in the carvings, not even his own reasoning, had managed to close that gap yet.

He thought of a gas container. Simple thing, something he’d learned about long before any of this existed, before void energy or dragons or systems that spoke in clipped bureaucratic text. Molecules trapped inside, bouncing, colliding, spreading toward whatever equilibrium the space allowed, never once organizing themselves back into a smaller, tighter shape on their own. That was entropy, reduced down to something a twelve-year-old could watch happen in a classroom demonstration. Structure never emerged from disorder without something outside the system forcing it to. Left alone, everything just spread. Everything just settled toward chaos, given enough time.

His own existence looked exactly like that gas container from the outside. Every fight he’d ever finished left the world with less structure in it than before he arrived. Kruel had been an organized, coherent, terrifying force, and now Kruel was nothing, scattered into whatever remained after a body stopped being a body. The Widow, same story. Rino’s shell, an ordered defense built specifically to withstand him, and it hadn’t mattered in the end, because eventually the shell stopped forming and what was underneath it simply ended. The Zenomurphs, an entire species, a structure that had survived generations of conquest, still holding some shape of itself right up until he arrived and it didn’t anymore.

That was the pattern. Undeniable at this point, no matter how many times he tried to argue himself out of seeing it clearly.

But here was the part that kept snagging, the part that refused to sit quietly no matter how many times he tried to think about something else instead.

Entropy wasn’t cruelty. That was the whole thing the system had been trying to explain, in its own flat, unhelpful way. A Calamity didn’t want to destroy. It simply was destruction, the same way heat simply was heat, without malice or intention behind the burn. Water didn’t hate the riverbank it eroded. It just moved the way water moved, and the bank wore away because that was what happened when something that flowed met something that didn’t, given enough time.

So if he was that, if he was the personification of some law governing the whole universe whether anyone liked it or not, what did that actually make the choices he’d made along the way? Did choice mean anything at all if the underlying nature stayed fixed regardless of what he decided each morning?

He watched a slow drift of ice crystals catch distant starlight ahead of them, tumbling end over end through the vacuum, remnants of something that had shattered long before he’d ever arrived to see the pieces.

Water didn’t choose the riverbank. But water also didn’t stop mid-flow to carve around something it didn’t want to touch. Water didn’t have a Sophie it loved enough to build an entire life’s worth of decisions around protecting. Water didn’t have a Sera learning kindness the hard way, or a Lila carrying damage she hadn’t asked for, or an Angel bleeding for soldiers she couldn’t always save. Water didn’t lie awake at night, or whatever the void-energy equivalent of lying awake actually was, wondering if the people who trusted it would still trust it if they understood what it actually was underneath the shape it wore for them.

That was the part the framework didn’t account for. Function versus intention. The system had said as much itself, plainly, without dressing it up. Lineage and function weren’t guaranteed to align. Maybe that meant something the system itself hadn’t fully worked out yet either.

He thought of Kaldrath Prime again, the field of the dead stretching out in every direction, and made himself sit with the discomfort of it instead of flinching away the way he wanted to. He hadn’t built anything there. That much was true and wasn’t going to become less true no matter how he reframed it. But he had also chosen it, deliberately, in defense of Storm, in defense of himself, against something that had already proven it would kill without hesitation given the chance. The destruction wasn’t random. It wasn’t entropy simply doing what entropy did without direction. It had a target. It had a reason behind it, even if the reason didn’t erase the cost.

Maybe that was the actual difference. Not whether he destroyed things, because clearly he did, consistently, on a scale that made the label fit uncomfortably well. The difference was in what decided where that destruction landed. Pure entropy didn’t choose. It just spread, indifferent, touching everything equally given enough time. He wasn’t indifferent. Every single thing he’d ever ended, he’d ended for a reason he could actually name out loud if someone asked him to.

That still didn’t make him a Sovereign. He wasn’t building anything either, not in any sense the word actually meant. But maybe it meant he wasn’t purely a Calamity in the way the system described one, either. Maybe he was something that existed in the space between the two labels, a function neither category fully captured, because maybe nobody had ever actually needed a word for someone who carried both bloodlines’ inheritance and chose, every single time, which direction to point it.

He didn’t know if that was true. He knew it was the only version of the answer he could actually live inside without it eating him alive from the inside out.

The nebula kept sliding by overhead, violet folding into rose folding back into violet, ancient light from dead stars still arriving patient and unhurried across the vast, indifferent dark.

’Guess I don’t get a clean answer,’ he thought quietly, to nobody, to Storm, to the whole silent expanse around them both. ’Guess I just get to keep choosing, and see what that adds up to eventually,’

Storm rumbled low beneath him, wings still barely moving, carrying them both forward through the hush without any particular hurry to arrive anywhere at all.

Noah sat back against Storm’s neck, the nebula’s long violet hush still trailing away behind them, and reached out to rub the scales just beneath his jaw.

’Alright, buddy. Let’s find somewhere to put down,’

Storm’s head snapped up.

Not the slow, lazy kind of alertness he did when something interesting caught his eye. This was different. His whole body went rigid mid-glide, wings stiffening, and a low vibration built in his chest that Noah had never actually felt him make before, something between a growl and a whine.

’Storm?’

Storm turned, hard, faster than Noah’s stomach could keep up with, and the stars smeared into long white streaks across his vision as momentum slammed him back against the ridge of scale he’d been resting on a half second earlier.

’Whoa—hey, what are you—,’

Storm didn’t answer. He never answered, but this silence felt different, heavier, his whole body locked forward toward something Noah couldn’t see yet, wings tucking tight to cut drag, speed climbing past anything he’d pushed for since they’d started drifting.

A planet swelled into view ahead of them, fast, too fast, atmosphere already visible as a thin blue haze wrapping the curve of it.

”Storm, slow down, we need an approach vector, we can’t just—”

Storm dove.

The atmosphere hit them like a wall, heat blooming instant along Noah’s exposed skin before his own instincts kicked his chi up defensively, and the world outside went white, then orange, then a blur of green and brown rushing up entirely too fast.

”Landing! Storm, LANDING, we need an actual—”

They hit the ground.

Not a landing. An impact, dirt and stone exploding outward in a wide crater, trees within fifty feet simply gone, snapped or uprooted or flattened outright by the shockwave, and Noah went flying off Storm’s back on contact, tumbling twice before catching himself in a crouch, void energy flaring reflexive around both hands.

”Ow. Okay. Cool. Great landing. Really nailed the—”

He looked up.

Storm was already back on his feet, faster than should have been possible after an impact like that, wings flaring to their full span, ice crawling fast up both forelimbs while lightning crackled bright and constant along his spine and tail, an aggressive, defensive display Noah had genuinely never seen him produce before, not against Rino, not against the Zenomurphs, not against anything.

Storm wasn’t looking at Noah.

He was looking past him, out toward the treeline, body angled low and coiled, every muscle locked and ready, eyes fixed on something in the middle distance that Noah couldn’t yet identify.

”Storm.” Noah rose slowly, brushing dirt off his shoulder, eyes tracking the same direction. ”What is it. What are you looking at.”

Storm didn’t answer.

He never did.

But the growl building low in his chest hadn’t stopped since the moment he’d first turned in open space, and it wasn’t stopping now.
