Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

The debriefing room sat heavy with the kind of silence that came after a problem revealed itself to be worse than the one you started with.

Sophie stared at the two names still glowing on the main screen, Mei Lin, First Lady, and felt the shape of the whole day shift underneath her.

”So,” Sera said slowly, breaking the quiet first. ”Even setting aside how we would ever prove any of this. Even setting aside the risk of accusing a woman none of us have ever seen, whose face is not public knowledge, who exists to most of humanity only as a title. We now have a mountain sitting in front of that mountain.”

”Which is,” Angel said, though she already knew the answer, asking mostly to make Sera say it out loud so it couldn’t be avoided.

”Hendricks sits close enough to the Ark’s actual seat of power that toppling him means going through people who could end this faction with a signature. Not a fight. A signature.” Sera’s voice stayed level, but something taut ran underneath every word. ”And our relationship with the EDF has only just begun to genuinely improve. You all know this. Rumors have circulated for months now that they intend to formally mend the breach with Eclipse, and who has been the one pushing that effort personally, more than anyone else in their entire command structure?”

”The General,” Brooks said quietly, answering before anyone else could get there first.

”The General,” Sera agreed. ”The same man who showed up at Vel’kai to stop One with his own hands. Remember we nearly died doing it. He has been, since that day, the loudest voice in that institution rooting for Noah, for this faction, publicly and privately both.”

”That joint mission months back,” Brooks added, ”tracking the alpha dragon’s energy signature. That wasn’t just cooperation between two organizations that happened to need something from each other. That built something real. Trust, on a level EDF hasn’t offered us since long before the tribunal ever happened.”

”And you want us to walk up to that man,” Sera said, turning to look at Sophie directly now, ”and tell him his own wife might be Purge.”

”I don’t want to do anything,” Sophie said, rubbing both temples slow, feeling the beginnings of a headache she didn’t have time for. ”I’m telling you what we found. That’s all this is right now. What we found.”

”I understand what you found.” Brooks’s voice hardened, just slightly. ”What I need you to actually sit with is what it costs if we’re wrong about it. He is, by every measure that matters in this galaxy right now, the single most powerful man in human space. Not figuratively. Actually. If we approach him with an accusation this size and it falls apart under real scrutiny, we don’t just lose his goodwill, Sophie. We hand him every justification he could ever need to treat Eclipse as a genuine threat instead of an ally, and there is no version of that outcome we walk away from intact.”

”So what,” Angel said, arms crossed tight, still half in her field gear from earlier, blood dried dark along one gauntlet she hadn’t gotten around to cleaning. ”We just sit on it? Pretend we never found anything?”

”For now,” Sophie said. ”Yes.”

”That’s not an answer, like we’ve said, it’s just delay wearing an answer’s clothes.” Angel’s jaw tightened. ”I get the stakes, Sophie, believe me, I understand exactly what happens if we’re wrong here. But sitting on confirmed information about a compromised command structure while that same structure keeps operating freely, that has its own cost too. What if he does something else in the meantime? What if this isn’t the end of what he’s planning, just the part we happened to catch?”

”I know that,” Sophie snapped, harder than she meant to, and immediately softened it. ”I know that, Angel. I’m not happy about any version of this. I’m just telling you what we can actually survive right now, versus what we can’t.”

”We need Noah for this,” Sera said, cutting through before it could escalate further. ”Not because the rest of us lack the authority to raise it. Because he has the relationship. If anyone could bring this to the General without it detonating everything we’ve built with him, it would be Noah.”

”And we can’t reach him,” Angel said, some of the fight draining out of her voice now, replaced with something wearier. ”You all know that. Shared Awareness isn’t a line we can pick up whenever we decide something’s urgent. It’s something he feels, if he happens to be paying attention to that part of himself at the exact moment it matters, wherever he actually is right now.”

”We could hope it registers,” Sera said.

”Hope isn’t a plan,” Brooks said, not unkindly, just factually.

”It’s what we currently have,” Sophie said, sharper than intended again. She exhaled, forcing her voice back down. ”We hope this feels urgent enough to him, whenever it does reach him, that he actually comes back for it instead of deciding it can wait. And even then.” She rubbed her face with both hands. ”Even then, we all know what he’ll probably weigh it against. Finding One. And honestly, he might be right to weigh it that way. I don’t know anymore.”

Nobody argued that point. Nobody had the energy left to.

”For now,” Sophie said, quieter, ”we can’t touch Hendricks. We build more. We need...”

Just suddenly, an alarm tore through the room before anyone could respond to that either.

Sam burst through the door a half second later, tablet already raised, breathing hard like he’d sprinted the length of the compound to get here.

”We’ve got a problem,” he said. ”A big one.”

Angel was already on her feet, all business again in an instant. ”Beast attack?”

”I wish it was that simple.”

He slapped the tablet against the main console without waiting for further questions, and every screen in the room lit at once, the eastern quadrant map spreading wide across all of them simultaneously, multiple locations blooming hard, angry red against the pale grid beneath.

Sophie’s stomach dropped clean through the floor.

”Please,” she said, voice already shaking slightly, ”don’t tell me that’s what I think it is.”

”Kelvin’s portal-tracking systems just picked up massive energy signatures,” Sam said, words coming fast now, ”across all these flagged sectors, simultaneously, no stagger, no lead-up. That could mean one of two things. Either it’s a repeat of two years ago, Kruel led in by Purge operatives working the same playbook. Or the Purge itself is moving directly this time. No proxy. No borrowed monster doing the work for them.”

”How many sectors,” Brooks asked, already crossing to the console, scanning the map herself.

”Six confirmed so far,” Sam said. ”Possibly more, the readings are still climbing in two additional zones we haven’t fully confirmed yet.”

”Six.” Angel’s voice went flat with disbelief. ”Simultaneously.”

”Simultaneously,” Sam confirmed.

Sophie was already moving, hitting her comm hard before she’d even fully processed the number.

”Kelvin—”

”I know.” His voice came through immediate, tight with urgency, none of the sunburned honeymoon ease left in it at all. ”Diana and I are already moving. We’ll be there as fast as the transport allows.”

The line cut before she could say anything else, Diana’s voice audible in the background for half a second, sharp and already barking something at whatever pilot was flying them back.

The room around them had already begun to shift into a different kind of chaos, purposeful now instead of panicked. Angel switched channels on her comm mid-stride, voice hardening into full command mode.

”This is Commander Angel, Eastern Task Force. I need full evacuation protocols initiated across every flagged sector that will be relayed by Eclipse immediately, containment teams standing by at the perimeter of each one.” A pause, listening to something on the other end. ”I understand the resource strain, I don’t care, pull whatever you have to pull. Protocol Killbox is a go. I repeat, Killbox is a go.”

Brooks was already halfway out the door, voice fading down the corridor as she went, barking clipped orders to whoever she passed, faction members scrambling into gear at a dead run behind her.

Sera rose from her chair, spine straight, wings already forming faint at her shoulders.

”I’m going to run an aerial sweep,” she said. ”Toward the strongest signature. I can be there faster than any transport we have.”

”No.” The word came out of Sophie sharp and immediate, absolute in a way that surprised even her. ”Not you, Sera.”

Sera’s brow furrowed. ”Sophie, I am faster in the air than nearly anyone else in this building, this is the obvious—”

”Trust me.” Sophie held her eyes, something unspoken sitting behind the words that Sera clearly didn’t fully understand but chose, after a long moment, not to push against. ”Not you. Not this one.”

Sera’s jaw tightened, but she sat back down, wings folding away again, though the confusion didn’t leave her face.

Outside, the compound had become a storm of organized motion. Eclipse members streamed toward transports in tight, practiced formation, faces set with the particular grim focus of people who’d trained for exactly this and hoped, every single time, that the training would never actually be needed. Angel’s task force scrambled from their own barracks blocks away, engines already roaring to life. Across the wider Cardinal, every academy’s stationed response units peeled out simultaneously in different directions, convoys splitting toward the flagged coordinates, sirens rising and falling in the distance like some enormous, mechanical heartbeat.

Sophie watched all of it unfold across the wall of screens, sweat beading cold at her temple despite the room’s climate control doing its job perfectly well.

”What is it this time,” she muttered, mostly to herself, eyes darting between street cameras, satellite feeds, anything that might show her what was actually coming before it physically arrived somewhere populated.

Nothing yet. Empty streets in every feed. Quiet skies, deceptively so. Just the systems, patient and relentless, still climbing steadily in six separate places at once, readings that refused to plateau no matter how long she stared at them willing them to.

Angel’s voice cut through again from across the room, switched to yet another channel now.

”Governor Sebastian, this is Commander Angel.” A pause. ”Yes, sir, I understand the sensitivity, this is not a drill, I need that on record right now. We may be facing an invasion-level event across multiple sectors simultaneously, and I need every available response unit moving in the next ten minutes, not the next hour.” Another pause, her jaw tightening at whatever answer came back. ”Then I need you to make it faster, sir. People are going to die on the timeline you just gave me.”

The briefing room door opened again.

”I came as soon as I heard.” The voice came breathless, quick. ”Saw a dozen vessels flying in red notice formation across half the sky on my way over.”

Sophie turned.

Lila stood in the doorway, chest still heaving slightly from whatever pace she’d covered getting here, eyes darting fast across the wall of screens, genuine worry written plain across her face, no mask left over any of it.

For a moment nobody said anything at all.

Then Sophie’s mace, resting where she’d set it down earlier that afternoon, stirred on its own. The eye at its center flared open, deep blue light waking behind it rather than simply glowing.

The light didn’t stay contained to the weapon. It ran up through Sophie’s hand where it rested near the mace, visible beneath her skin, tracing pale blue along her veins from palm to wrist to forearm, climbing toward her shoulder. Her eyes caught it last, blue flaring bright and sudden across both irises before settling into something dimmer, steady.

Sophie stared down at her own glowing arm, then up at Lila’s face, something cold and absolute settling deep in her chest.

”So this is it,” she said quietly, the words barely audible over the chaos still unfolding just outside the door. ”It’s today.”
